EDITOR’S NOTEThis volume is a landmark contribution to the field of Chinese military studies.For years,the Soviet military studies field was replete with detailed organizational analyses, but a variety of factors,primarily the opacity of the Chinese system,prevented similar progress in research on the People’s Liberation Army(PLA).Nor was study of PLA organization a high priority for members of the field,given the dearth of knowledge across the board.Instead,the first four decades of PLA studies in the non-governmental realm focused on topics that lent themselves to exploration via limited,official open sources,such as political work or civil-military relations.The avalanche of new open sources and so-called“grey literature”(internal or unofficial military-related publications) in recent years,however,now permits highly detailed examination of the Chinese military’s organizational structure.In June2000,CAPS and RAND co-hosted their annual PLA field conference.The title of the conference was“The PLA as Organization.”Paperwriters were carefully chosen for their specific expertise on service branches or organizations within the PLA. Many of the researchers had spent their careers primarily focusing on one organization, though few had taken the time to draw a detailed organization portrait.The organizers distributed explicit criteria for the papers,and staffed the panels with discussants almost equally as familiar with the topic.The results of the conference exceeded all expectations. So China is like this ultra-competitive environment where you have to be hungry and ambitious to stand out and get ahead in life. Atleast that's how many Americans understand the situation in China.Lastly, I think some Americans believe that the Chinese government pushes citizens to work really hard too. Since China is a communist country still in some ways, the government controls a lot and wants its people to obey and be productive. My dad said in schools, kids get taught from a young age to put their efforts into working and building the wealth of China as a country. And in jobs, the Chinese companies are often owned by the government too, so everyone needs to follow the rules about working as hard as possible. While Americans get vacations and can be a bit lazier sometimes, Chinese people face pressure from authorities to devote themselves fully to their work.Those are some of the main reasons I think Americans tend to believe Chinese people are extremely hard workers with amazing work ethics. To be honest though, I'm not sure I agree with it 100%. I've met some Chinese kids at my school who seem pretty normal and not that much more disciplined than me! And I've also heard that young people in China today are starting to live more relaxed lifestyles and don't want the same grindy lives as their parents had. Maybe the work culture is shifting a bit over there.Either way, Chinese people's dedication and drive when it comes to work is definitely noticed and admired by a lot of Americans. 4.中国人没有勇气去追求他们认为正确的事情。

首先,他们没有从错误中筛选正确事物的能力,因为他们的思想被贪婪所占据。

再有,就算他们有能力筛选出正确的事情,他们也缺乏勇气去把真理化为实践。

5.中国人习惯接受廉价和免费的事物,他们总是梦想奇迹或者好运,因为他们不愿意付出努力,他们总想不劳而获。

很少有中国人明白一个事实:威望和成就是通过一步步努力的工作和牺牲实现的,不付出就没有所得。

简单来说,如果是为了谋生,那一个人只有去索取;但如果是为了生活,一个人必须要去奉献。

6.由于在贫穷的环境下生长并且缺少应有的教育,大多数中国人不懂得优雅的举止和基本的礼貌。

他们在青少年时所受的教育就是如何说谎并从别人那里索取,而不是去与别人分享自己的所有。

由于技术落后,管理失败,中国制造的单位能耗要比发达国家如日本、美国高出很多。

因此,随着出口额的增加,中国在扩大生产的同时丧失着宝贵的能源。

同时,这种行为也严重地污染了环境,使中国变为全世界最不适宜人类居住的国家。

9.目前中国正在遭受着资本主义社会何去何从的折磨,环境的破坏与人性的丧失。

由于中国人天生的贪婪的本性,他们可以毫无保留的接受资本主义的阴暗面即无止境追求物质利益、忽视人的尊严。

中国人对西方的技术与产品狂热追求的同时却对西方管理文化所强调的坦率、直接、诚实这些品质漠不关心。

10.由于中国文化不鼓励敢于冒险这种优良品质,所以中国人极力避免冒险,他们也不想寻求机会来改善自己的生活。

中国人对于生活的平衡性和意义并不感兴趣,相反他们更执迷于对物质的索取,在这点上要远远超过西方人。

大多数中国人不懂得“精神灵性”、“自由信仰”以及“心智健康”这样的概念,因为他们的思想尚不能达到一个灵性生命存在的更高层次。

12.中国的教育体系很大程度上已经成为一种失败和耻辱。

它已经不能够服务于教育本应所服务的对象:社会。

如果20世纪的中国是一个富裕和统一的国家,我们会有一个完全不同的第一次世界大战,我们就不会有第二次世界大战而是第二次欧洲大战。

中国能够阻止日本侵略或者打败日本。

美国在这些冲突上的花费从根本意义上会减少很多,因为珍珠港事件以及其他事件就不会发生了。

我们和整个世界,更不用说10亿中国人,一个多世纪以来,已经为中国的弱小付出了惨重的代价。

世界需要一个健康的中国。

中国全球化的成功将会使我们不再会有类似这样的麻烦:中国不再是一个让世界强权发生激烈冲突的地方;中国不再会支持东南亚、非洲以及拉丁美洲的叛乱;中国不再会寻求破坏全球性金融机构的机会。

我们将受益于这样一个中国:它支持台湾和菲律宾稳定和资本主义民主,它加入IMF、世界银行以及WTO,它告诉邻国政治稳定、自由贸易以及自由投资的好处。
