I had been looking forward to it for months, making all kinds of plans with my friends about what we would do. Unlike the previous few summers where I just lazed around at home, this year I was determined to get out and have some real adventures. And boy, did I ever!It all started in early July when my best friend Xiao Ming invited me to go with his family on a road trip to Xinjiang province in the far northwest of China. At first I was a little hesitant because it's such a long way from my home city of Guangzhou. But then Xiao Ming told me about all the amazingplaces we would get to see like the Flaming Mountains, Heavenly Lake, and the ruins of ancient cities along the Silk Road. How could I say no to that?We loaded up Xiao Ming's dad's van with all our luggage and supplies for the 4,000 kilometer journey and set off bright and early one Saturday morning. The first couple of days of driving were pretty boring as we crossed the flat northern plains, but I didn't mind too much because Xiao Ming and I had loaded up our phones with movies, music, and games to keep us occupied.Things got a lot more interesting once we reached the province of Gansu and the landscape turned to rolling hills and rocky deserts. We stopped at the eerily beautiful Crescent Lake, a bizarre bright green lake in the middle of the desert. According to local legend, it was formed by a meteor strike millions of years ago. We also visited the famous Mogao Grottoes near the city of Dunhuang, a series of amazing Buddhist cave temples carved into a cliff face over 1,500 years ago. The ancient murals and statues were absolutely breathtaking.From Dunhuang, we turned west towards Xinjiang, driving for miles through vast, empty deserts of rock and sand. I felt like I had been transported to another planet! We made a short stopin the city of Turpan to see the Flaming Mountains, a ridge of bright red sandstone hills that glow like they are on fire when the sun hits them at certain angles. No wonder this place was so important on the ancient Silk Road trade routes!Finally, after over a week on the road, we reached our final destination: the city of Kashgar in far western Xinjiang. This place was like stepping into another world entirely. Unlike the Han Chinese cities I'm used to, Kashgar had a strong Central Asian influence from the Uyghur people who live there. The muddy alleyways of the old town were lined with amazing woodcarved houses and buzzed with activity from vendors selling everything from kebabs to handicrafts. I loved bargaining with the merchants in the rowdy bazaars and learning some basic Uyghur phrases like "Rahmet!" (Thank you).One of the highlights was definitely the day we went on an excursion into the mountains to see Heavenly Lake. This crystal-clear blue lake ringed by snow-capped peaks has to be one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. We went hiking along the shore, took a boat out into the middle of the lake, and I even went for a quick swim despite the frigid temperature! That night we stayed in traditional Kyrgyz yurts, eating delicious lamb kebabs and listening to folk musicians play haunting melodieson their two-string dutar lutes by the light of a roaring bonfire. I felt like a modern-day explorer following in the footsteps of Marco Polo along the Silk Road.All too soon, our amazing Xinjiang adventure came to an end and we had to start the long drive back home to Guangzhou. Although I was sad to leave such an incredible place behind, I also couldn't wait to get back and tell all my friends about everything I had seen and done. The memories and photos I took will definitely last me a lifetime.I learned so much from this trip, both about the diverse cultures and geography of my own country, but also about myself. Before this, the furthest I had traveled from Guangzhou was maybe a couple hundred kilometers. But over the course of our 8,000 km round-trip journey, I discovered I'm much more adventurous, curious, and adaptable than I ever imagined. Haggling in crowded bazaars, staying in remote yurts, and squeezing into a van with the same four people for weeks on end was challenging, but also incredibly exciting and rewarding.
