World in a dishSome like it hot The rise of chilli crisp is a case study in how foods become fadsDuring lockdowns, some people found joy in cooking intricate meals that were previously impossible to make due to the rush of ordinary life. However, others found making three meals a day tedious, especially if they were cooking for small children. Enter condiments –a simple way to satisfy both groups. Condiments offered enthusiasts a chance to make dips and drizzles typically found at local delis and provided weary cooks with an easy way to add flavor to mundane meals, such as cheese toasties. Chilli crisp, a sauce made from garlic, shallots, fermented black beans, sesame seeds, and chili pepper oil, became increasingly popular during the pandemic because it satisfies humans' love of crispy and spicy foods. In China, chilli crisp has been a beloved condiment for centuries. The most famous brand is Lao Gan Ma, created by Tao Huabi in the southwestern province of Guizhou. Tao started selling noodles coated with the sauce in 1989 and now produces 13 million bottles of the condiment every day. During the pandemic, chilli crisp's popularity spread globally as people began cooking more at home and sharing theircreations on social media.Kevan Vetter of McCormick’s Flavour Forecast notes that tastemakers previously learned about new food trends by visiting restaurants and interviewing chefs, but during lockdowns, they turned to social media to see what home cooks and professional chefs were making. Along with banana bread, chilli crisp was one of the top trending foods during the pandemic, and its popularity has not waned.Despite its popularity, the question remains whether amateurs will continue making chilli crisp or turn to mass-produced alternatives. People rarely bother making ketchup because the commercial versions meet their taste preferences, so Tao Huabi might argue that her company's commercial option is just as authentic. With the growing East Asian population in America and Britain, and numerous new brands of chilli crisp emerging, it is likely to become a pantry staple, much like salsa once seemed exotic but is now commonly found in households.【重点词汇】1. lockdowns ['lɒkdaʊnz] n. 平凡的, 世俗的16. cheese [tʃiːz] n. 18. However, I did love to run because I felt as if I was flying but this all changed two years ago when I suffered a knee injury. I was bedridden for two weeks and I had a difficult time moving even short distances. I literally cried myself on my way to the car for a few days. When therapy wasn't working well for me, I signed up for a hot yoga class for girls, Bikram Yoga to be exact. Starting a yoga practice was truly a godsend because it helped me gain strength in my knees but, most importantly, yoga helped me attain a more peaceful state of mind, body and spirit.Since each class was heated to 105°F, every time I stepped foot in the yoga studio, I'd feel a surge(涌起) of negative thoughts come upon me like a big ocean wave. Some of these thoughts were, in the beginning of my practice, so strong that I walked out of the class several times. However, as the months passed by, I noticed that when I didn't get swayed away by my negative thoughts, I could stay in the hot room for longer. After 34 months of practicing hot yoga, my arms and legs were beginning to get definition. I also woke up with so much more energy than I had before starting my yoga practice and I gradually started shedding the pounds from my body. Yoga literally made me feel as if I'd taken a shot of energy drink and just gave me that burst that helped my knees heal and made my overall health better. As I saw some of my classmates do poses that looked appealing to me, I started to think maybe I could do them too. Therefore, yoga helped show me that I have no real limitations physically unless I set those limitations myself through eating junk and thinking in negative limiting terms. Also, practicing yoga in front of a mirror helped me connect with myself and practicing with a group of people really helped me to feel a greater sense of connection with humanity whereas before I didn't. Overall, this yoga practice has helped me to see I'm part of a bigger picture in life!4.What made the author sign up for the yoga class?A.Her currently disabled knee.B.Her being uncoordinated.C.Her failure to find her car.D.Her serious mental disease.5.What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 3?A.Lack of confidence prevented her doing yoga.B.The temperature was difficult to bear in yoga classes.C.She couldn't stand the pain the knee injury brought.D.She was greatly impacted by negative thoughts at first.6.What effect did yoga have on the author?A.She did better than her classmates at school.B.Her physical and mental states have improved a lot.C.She has developed many healthy eating habits.D.Her social circle was widened in the yoga classes.7.What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?A.To share her experience in taking yoga classes.B.To call on readers to sign up for yoga courses.C.To present the benefits of practicing yoga regularly.D.To show readers the necessary skills needed to do yoga.CAnimal and plant species are disappearing at frightening rates. The problem has led to efforts to “rewild” places where such life existed before human development, pollution and climate change forced it out. The American city of Detroit is an example of how human actions can increase rewilding, which generally means helping natural systems in damaged locations, removing dams or building tunnels to reconnect animal pathways cut by roads.Detroit's population reached a high of 1.8 million in the 1950s. Then the population began dropping. By 2000, there were fewer than one million people living in the city. Thousands of houses and other buildings were left empty over the years. Some structures were destroyed, leaving empty areas that plants and animals regained as habitats. Nonprofit groups have also planted trees and community gardens in these areas. Bald eagles found their way back as bans on DDT and some other insect poisons were put in place nationwide. Antipollution laws and governmentsupported cleanups made nearby rivers better for fish and native plants. Now, Detroit is home to 300 bird species and is a busy visiting place for ducks and others during migration. Additionally, this city offers a special way to study plants and animals in urban settings. Unlike most big cities, its population is decreasing but its streets and buildings remain in place. And there are many kinds of habitats, including large lakes, rivers and human neighborhoods. Detroit's parklands are so quiet that people don't even know they're in the city.“It used to be that you had to go to some remote location to get exposure to nature,” said John Hartig, a professor of University of Windsor. “Now that's not the case. Like it or not, rewilding will occur. The question is how we can prepare communities and environments to anticipate the presence of more and more wildlife. After all, many city people have lost their tolerance to live with wildlife. To really make a difference in dealing with the biodiversity crisis, you're going to have to have people on board.”8.What might have happened in Detroit at the beginning of 21st century?A.The city was overpopulated.B.More community gardens were built.C.Many buildings were deserted.D.The environment was badly damaged.9.What does the example of Detroit mainly tell us?A.It's governmentsupported efforts that really matter.B.Humans' efforts can make a difference in rewilding.C.Humans are to blame for the worsening environment.D.It's hard to humans and wildlife to live in harmony.10.What can we infer about current Detroit from the text?A.It is a big city crowded with tourists and bird species.B.Tourists don't show any interest in the quiet surroundings.C.It's turned into a place where people can get close to nature.D.It's become a center for those who study animals and plants.11.What does the underlined word “anticipate” in the last paragraph mean?A.Protect. B.Expect.C.Imagine. D.Delay.DThe Front Porch Center for Innovation and Wellbeing (FPCIW) launched a Bear Robotics ‘Servi’ pilot in June 2022 to help ease the challenges for senior dining services. In senior care, difficult as having a major change can be, the FPCIW took strategic steps to maximize the chances of the robotics pilot being a success. Davis Park, vice president at FPCIW, feels the pilot's success was largely due to the predeployment conversations and focus group discussions held. “We strongly believe that a little investment in the groundwork can make all the difference in a successful or failed technology project in senior living communities,” he says.Clear, open, and honest conversation around the pilot helped to prepare staff and residents for the robots' introduction. “Change is always hard,” says Park. “The open discus sions we had weeks in advance were helpful to make sure residents and staff felt heard about concerns they had about how ‘the robots are taking over’ or ‘this is going to take my job away.’” He notes that the FPCIW worked to reach out directly to those individuals who disagree or feel uncomfortable and to understand their pain points. The focus on deliberate and clear messaging also helped to address concerns surrounding the pilot. Messaging was delivered in person as early as eight weeks before the robots were introduced to the community dining rooms. Multiple open forums leading up to the “golive” kickoff created the opportunity to answer questions and address concerns. “We also distributed digital and physical copies of flyers and letters to all residents. And with that, we were able to head off many of the concerns and worries before they became problems and barriers to adoption.”When it comes to using robots in dining services, Park has a word for senior care operators. “Listen. Make sure to create the time and space for residents and staff to air their concerns, and also be prepared for those who may not be ready,” he says. “And just as importantly, if not more: Make it fun! During our golive event, we covered the dining room with robotthemed decorat ions and had the robots pass out robotthemed candies and champagne (香槟).”12.What is the key to the pilot's being successful?A.Putting in much time.B.Investing massive money.C.Providing chances of research maximally.D.Having sufficient communications beforehand.13.Why do some people object to the pilot?A.They find robots unfriendly.B.They fear their unemployment.C.They consider robots unreliable.D.They think the robot hard to operate.14.What's Paragraph 3 mainly about?A.Concerns on the pilot.B.Ways of delivering messages.C.Means of writing letters to residents.D.Barriers to accepting the dining robots.15.What's Park's advice for operators?A.To be sociable and grateful.B.To be cautious and generous.C.To be tolerant and optimistic.D.To be patient and considerate.

A dog is more than a fleeting love Dogs have long been known as man's best friend. As pets, dogs bring us comfort and joy, and they also keep us active. During the pandemic lockdowns last year, dog ownership increased significantly as more people were staying at home and had the time to care for a furry friend. However, with increased demand for puppies came skyrocketing prices. Some breeds like Cockapoos and Cocker Spaniels saw even steeper price increases, and many puppies were sold for over £3,000. Such high prices might encourage puppy farming, smuggling, or even dog theft. Some breeders have also been found selling animals on social media sites, which animal welfare charities have called "extremely irresponsible."Notably, new owners who obtained a dog legally, from a registered breeder or a rescue centre, found themselves unprepared for life with a new pet. Animal behaviourists in theUK have reported that requests for help have surged from owners of dogs suffering from fear-aggression after their lives have been turned upside down.Looking towards the future, there are concerns about the welfare of these beloved pets. Ian Atkin, the manager of the Oxfordshire Animal Sanctuary in the UK, warns that while dogs are enjoying their moment now, separation anxiety could surface when people return to work. Additionally, Claire Calder from the UK’s Dogs Trust rescue organisation says that “economic situations also mean that some people may find they cannot afford to look after a dog.”The takeaway message is to avoid purchasing a puppy too hastily and to pick one that fits into your lifestyle. In conclusion, owning a dog can provide immense happiness and fulfilment, but it comes with significant responsibilities. Whether you acquire one from a breeder or a shelter, be prepared to commit time, energy, and finances towards its well-being. And most importantly, ensure you consider the impact a new dog will have on your lifestyle and living situation before bringing it home, so you can enjoy yourfurry friend for years to come.【重点词汇】1. man's best friend /mænz/ /best/ /frend/ 人类最好的朋友2. comfort /ˈkʌmfət/ 安慰; 舒适3. joy /dʒɔɪ/ 高兴; 快乐4. pandemic /pænˈdemɪk/ 流行病; 大流行5. lockdown /ˈlɒkdaʊn/ 原意为紧急情况下对某些地方或建筑实施封锁措施,以防止危险的散播。

According to statistics, you're more than twice as likely to die of skin cancer as a woman, and nine times more likely to die of AIDS. Assuming you make it to the end of your natural term, about 78 years for men in Australia, you'll die on average five years before a woman. There're many reasons for this—typically, men take more risks than women and are more likely to drink and smoke—but perhaps more importantly, men don't go to the doctor.“Men aren't seeing doctors as often as they should. ”says Dr Gullotta. “This is particularly so for the over-40s,when diseases tend to strike. ”Gullotta says a healthy man should visit the doctor every year or two. For those over 45,it should be at least once a year.According to a recent survey,95%of women aged between 15 and early 40s see a doctor once a year, compared to 70%of men in the same age group.“A lot of men think they're invincible(不可战胜的),”,Gullotta says. “They only come in when a friend drops dead on the golf cours e and they think,…Geez,if it could happen to him. . . ‟”“Then there's the ostrich approach. Some men are scared of what might be there and would rather not know,”says Dr Ross Cartmill.“Most men get their cars serviced more regularly than they service their bodies,”Cartmill says. He believes most diseases that commonly affect men could be addressed by preventive check-ups.“Regular check-ups for men would surely place strain(紧张)on the public purse,”Cartmill says. “But prevention is cheaper in the long run than having to treat the disease. Besides, the final cost is far greater:it's called premature(未到期的)death. ”13. From the passage we can know the natural term for women in Australia is about years.A. 73B. 78C. 83D. 8814. For every dissatisfied customer,a store will lose up to three more due to negative reviews. The resulting “snowball effect” can be very harmful to retailers.According to the research, shoppers who purchased clothing encountered the most problems. Ranked second and third were grocery and electronics customers.During peak shopping hours, some retailers solved the parking problems by getting part-time local police to work as parking attendants(服务员). Some hired flag wavers to direct customers to empty parking spaces.Retailers can relieve the headaches by redesigning store layouts(布局),pre-stocking sales items, hiring speedy and experienced cashiers, and having sales representatives on hand to answer questions. Most importantly, salespeople should be flexible and polite with angry customers.“Retailers who're responsive and friendly are more likely to smooth over(缓解)issues than those who aren't so friendly. ”said professor Stephen Hoch. “Maybe something as simple as a greeter at the store entrance would help. ”Customers can also improve future shopping experiences by complaining to the retailer, instead of complaining to the rest of the world. Retailers are finding it difficult to improve when they have no idea what is wrong.17. Why are store managers often the last to hear complaints?A. AGoldie's SecretShe turned up at the doorstep of my house in Cornwall. No way could I have sent her away. No way, not me anyway. Maybe someone had kicked her out of their car the night before. "We're moving house.'; "No space for her any more with the baby coming." "We never really wanted her, but what could we have done? She was a present." People find all sorts of excuses for abandoning an animal. And she was one of the most beautiful dogs I had ever seen.I called her Goldie. If I had known what was going to happen I would have given her a more creative name. She was so unsettled during those first few days. She hardly ate anything and had such an air of sadness about her. There was nothing I could do to make her happy, it seemed. Heaven knows what had happened to her at her previous owner's. But eventually at the end of the first week she calmed down. Always by my side, whether we were out on one of our long walks or sitting by the fire. That's why it was such a shock when she pulled away from me one day when we were out for a walk. We were a long way from home, when she started barking and getting very restless. Eventually I couldn't hold her any longer and she raced off down the road towards a farmhouse in the distance as fast as she could.By the time I reached the farm I was very tired and upset with Goldie. But when I saw her licking (舔) the four puppies (幼犬) Istarted to feel sympathy towards them. "Wedidn't know what had happened to her," saidthe woman at the door. "I took her for a walkone day, soon after the puppies were born, and she just disappeared." "She must havetried to come back to them and got lost,"added a boy from behind her. While Sara felt Betty didn't hold up her end of the conversation, Betty complained to Steve that Sara never gave her a chance to talk. The problem had to do with expectations about pacing and pausing.Conversation is a turn-taking game. When our habits are similar, there's no problem. But if our habits are different, you may start to talk before I'm finished or fail to take your turn when I'm finished. That's what was happening with Betty and Sara.It may not be coincidental that Betty, who expected relatively longer pauses between turns, is British, and Sara, who expected relatively shorter pauses, is American. Betty often felt interrupted by Sara. But Betty herself became an interrupter and found herself doing most of the talking when she met a visitor from Finland. And Sara had a hard time cutting in on some speakers from Latin America or Israel. The general phenomenon, then, is that the small conversation techniques, like pacing and pausing, lead people to drawconclusions not about conversational stylebut about personality and abilities. Thesehabitual differences are often the basis for dangerous stereotyping (思维定式). Andthese social phenomena can have very personal consequences. For example, a womanfrom the southwestern part of the US went tolive in an eastern city to take up a job in personnel. When the Personnel Departmentgot together for meetings, she kept searching for the right time to breakin--and never found it. Although back homeshe was considered outgoing and confident,in Washington she was viewed as shy and retiring. When she was evaluated at the endof the year, she was told to take a trainingcourse because of her inability to speak up.That's why slight differences in conversational style--tiny little thingslike microseconds of pause-can have a greateffect on one's life. The result in this casewas a judgment of psychological problems---even in the mind of the woman herself, who really wondered what was wrongwith her and registered for assertiveness training.12. What did Sara think of Betty when talkingwith her?A. Betty was talkative.B. Betty was an interrupter.C. Betty did not take her turn.D. Betty paid no attention to Sara.13. According to the passage, who are likelyto expect the shortest pauses between turns?A. Americans.B. Israelis.C.The British. D. The Finns.14. We can learn from the passage that______.A. communication breakdown results from short pauses and fast pacingB. women are unfavorably stereotyped in eastern cities of the USC. one's inability to speak up is culturally determined sometimesD. one should receive training to build up one's confidence15. The underlined word "assertiveness" in the last paragraph probably means _______.A. being willing to speak one's mindB. being able to increase one's powerC. being ready to make one's own judgmentD. being quick to express one's ideas confidentlyEThe British aren’t having as many children as they used to. One reason is that people are having children much older than before, meaning they have fewer years in which they can have them. After years at university, they need a few years of work experience before they can get the job they want. They might then get married, but it’s incredibly expensive to buy a house in the UK.The above explains why young British people now don’t move out of their parents’ home until they are around 30 years old on average. It is not until they are 30 that they can afford their own home. Increasingly, it is not until that age that they can afford to get married and start a new life in a new home. It’s only after this age that many young people start thinking about having a child. So a British person manages to get a job,get a home and get married. Why isn’t he or she then having at least two children on average? The main reason is that it is quite expensive to bring up a child in the UK. Why is it expensive? Well, these days, both parents need to work just to pay for their home and living expenses. Because both parents are at work, that means they then need to pay someone to look after their child during the day. Paying for this childcare is nearly always expensive. The recent financial crisis is making things even harder for families, since unemployment is rising and even fewer people can afford to have children. With so much pressure on families, is it any surprise that the divorce rate is so high?So what is Britain doing to try and save the British family? The government is trying to make it cheaper to have children. For example, there have been increases in money families can claim from the state each month. Also, there are increasing government subsidies for nursery schools, so that parents do not need to pay so much for child care. The government is also trying to reduce the number of hours British parents have to work to earn enough money to pay their bills. If parents didn’t have to work so many hours, they’d have more time to spend with their children and wouldn’t need to spend so much on childcare. On average, a Briton works 49 hours a week, which is the most in Europe. The state is now considering introducing laws to encourage companies to improve their employees’ work-life balance. Let’s hope they’re not too late to save the Britishfamily. Otherwise, the British will always be too tired, and won’t have enough time and money, to have children.16. Young British people live in theirparents’ home until around 30because .A. They are allowed to get married at 30B. they can’t find jobs to supportthemselvesC. they can’t afford a house of theirown until thenD. they enjoy family life with theirparents17. The British are now having fewerchildren than before for all thefollowing reasons EXCEPT that .A. they have fewer years to havechildrenB. they live much shorter lives thanbeforeC. it is more expensive to bring up achildD. people are losing their jobs becauseof the recent financial crisis18. To make it cheaper to have children, theBritish government is .A. bringing down pricesB. raising the salaries of parentsC. reducing family income taxD. increasing subsidies for familiesand nursery schools19. It can be inferred from the textthat .A. with long work hours, it is hard forBritish parents to balance life and workB. more and more families in Britain arebreaking up because they are havingfewer childrenC. among Europeans, British people workhardest and earn the leastD. childcare takes up too much energy andtime for the British20.
