Illusions are fascinating phenomena that challenge our perception of reality. They occur when our senses deceive us, causing us to experience something that does not exist or exists differently than we perceive it. Illusions can be visual, auditory, tactile, or olfactory, and they can range from mild to severe. One of the most common types of illusions is theoptical illusion. These illusions involve the perception of visual information, such as the shape, size, or movement of objects. A famous example of an optical illusion is theMüller-Lyer illusion, in which two lines of equal length appear to be different lengths due to the arrangement of arrows at their endpoints.Another type of illusion is the auditory illusion. These illusions involve the perception of sound, such asthe pitch, volume, or location of sound sources. An example of an auditory illusion is the Shepard tone, which appears to continuously ascend or descend in pitch, but actually remains at the same pitch.Tactile illusions involve the perception of touch, such as the texture, temperature, or pressure of objects. An example of a tactile illusion is the two-point discrimination test, in which the ability to distinguish between two points touching the skin is tested.Olfactory illusions involve the perception of smell, such as the intensity or quality of odors. An example of an olfactory illusion is the "Phantom Smell Syndrome," in which individuals perceive odors that are not present in the environment.Illusions can have a variety of effects on our lives. They can be amusing, disorienting, or even dangerous. For example, optical illusions can cause pilots to misjudge the distance to the ground, leading to accidents. Auditory illusions can make it difficult to locate the source of asound, which can be especially dangerous in emergency situations. However, illusions can also be used for positive purposes. For example, optical illusions are used in art and design to create visually appealing images. Tactile illusions are used in medical settings to assess nerve damage. Olfactory illusions are used in the food industry to enhance the flavor of food.Overall, illusions are a fascinating and complex phenomenon that provide insights into the workings of our senses and brains. While they can sometimes lead to misperceptions, illusions can also be used for entertainment, art, and other beneficial purposes.

Optical Illusion

Lateral inhibition(侧抑制), where in the receptive field of the retina light and dark receptors compete with one another to become active, has been used to explain why we see bands of increased brightness at the edge of a colour difference when viewing pictures. Once a receptor is active, it inhibits adjacent(邻近的) receptors. This inhibition creates contrast, highlighting(突出 的)edges.

distorting illusions
Distorting(扭曲的) illusions are characterized by distortions of size, length, position or curvature(弯曲). A striking example is the Café wall illusion. Other examples are the famous Müller-Lyer illusion and Ponzo illusion.

高一英语与哲学英语阅读理解20题1<背景文章>Morality is a complex and profound concept in philosophy. It can be defined in various ways, but generally, it refers to the principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behavior. In different cultures around the world, morality is manifested in diverse forms. In some Western cultures, for example, individualism is highly emphasized. The moral concept often focuses on the rights and freedoms of the individual. People believe that each person has the right to pursue their own happiness as long as it doesn't violate the basic rights of others. This is reflected in many aspects of life. For instance, in business, competition is seen as a normal and moral behavior as long as it is fair play.On the other hand, in many Asian cultures, collectivism plays a more significant role. Morality is often related to the well - being of the group or community. Filial piety, which means respecting and taking care of one's parents and elders, is considered a very important moral value. In a family - centered society, one's actions are often judged by how much they contribute to the family harmony and prosperity. The relationship between morality and personal behavior is also very interesting. Morality serves as a guide for personal behavior. A person withhigh moral standards will tend to make decisions that are in line with what is considered right in their cultural and ethical context. For example, if a person believes that honesty is a fundamental moral value, they will be more likely to tell the truth in various situations, even when it may be inconvenient or unprofitable for them. However, moral behavior is not always easy to achieve. There are often temptations and pressures that can make a person deviate from their moral principles. For example, in a society where material wealth is highly valued, a person may be tempted to engage in unethical behavior such as cheating in order to gain more money or status.1. <问题1>What is the general definition of morality according to the passage?A. It is about the rules of a specific culture.B. It refers to the principles about right and wrong or good and bad behavior.C. It only focuses on personal interests.D. It is a set of laws in different countries.答案:B。
