New US Plan for Disease PreventionUrging Americans to take responsibility for their health, Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson on Tuesday launched a $15 million program to try to encourage communities to do more to prevent chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer and diabetes (糖尿病) .The initiative highlights the costs of chronic diseases -- the leading causes of death in the United States- and outlines ways that people can prevent them, including better diet and increased exercise."In the United States today, 7 of 10 deaths and the vast majority of serious illness, disability and health care costs are caused by chronic diseases," the Health and Human Services department said in a statement. The causes are often behavioral -- smoking, poor eating habits and a lack of exercise."I am convinced that preventing disease by promoting better health is a smart policy choice for our future," Thompson told a conference held to launch the initiative."Our current health care system is not structured to deal with the rising costs of treating diseases that are largely preventable through changes in our lifestyle choices."Thompson said heart disease and strokes will cost the country more than $ 351 billion in 2003."These leading causes of death for men and women arelargely preventable, yet we as a nation are not taking the steps necessary for US to lead healthier, longer lives," he said. The $15 million is designed to go to communities to promote prevention, pushing for changes as simple as building sidewalks to encourage people to walk more.Daily exercise such as walking can prevent and even reverse heart disease and diabetes, and prevent cancer and strokes. The money will also go to community organizations, clinics and nutritionists who are being encouraged to work together to educate people at risk of diabetes about what they can do to prevent it and encourage more cancer screening. The American Cancer .Society estimates that half of all cancers can be caught by screening, including Pap tests ( 巴氏试验) for cervical ( 子宫颈的) cancer mammograms ( 乳癌X线照片)for breast cancer, colonoscopies (结肠镜检查) , and prostate (前列腺的) checks. If such cancers were all caught by early screening, the group estimates that the survival rate for cancer would rise to 95 percent.31. Soot and Snow:a Hot Combinationl New research from NASA scientists suggests emissions of black soot alter the way sunlight reflects off snow. According to a computer simulation, black soot may be responsible for 25 percent of observed global warming over the past century.2 Soot in the higher latitudes of the Earth, where ice is more common, absorbs more of the sun's energy and warmth than an icy, white background. Dark-colored black carbon, or soot, absorbs sunlight, while lighter colored ice reflects sunlight.3 Soot in areas with snow and ice may play all important role in climate change. Also, if snow and ice covered areas begin melting, the warming effect increases, as the soot becomes more concentrated on the snow surface. "Thisprovides a positive feedback, as glaciers and ice sheet smelt; they tend to get even dirtier," said Dr. James Hansen, a researcher at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, New York.4 Hansen found soot's effect on snow albedo (solar energy reflected back to space), which may be contributing to trends toward early springs in the Northern Hemisphere, such as thinning Arctic sea ice, melting glaciers and permafrost. Soot also is believed to play a role in changes in the atmosphere above the oceans and land.5 "Black carbon reduces the amount of energy reflected by snow back into space, thus heating the snow surface more than if there were no black carbon," Hansen said. Soot's increased absorption of solar energy is especially effective in warming the world's climate. "This forcing is unusually effective, causing twice as much global warming as a carbon dioxide forcing of the same magnitude," Hansen noted.6 Hansen cautioned, "although the role of soot in altering global climate is substantial, it does not alter the fact that greenhouse gases are the primary cause of climate warming during the past century. Such gases are expected to be the largest climate forcing the rest of this century.7 The researchers found that observed warming in the Northern Hemisphere was 1arge in the winter and spring at middle and high latitudes. These observations were consistent with the researchers' climate model simulations, which showed some of the largest warming effects occurred when there were heavy snow cover and sufficient sunlight.词汇:soot n. 煤烟, 煤灰emission n. 释放, 散发, 排放simulation v. 模拟latitude n. 纬度glacier n. 冰川, 冰河albedo n. 反照率permafrost n. 永冻层forcing n. 温室作用dioxide n. 二氧化物magnitude n. 量, 大小练习:1. 全国职称英语考试卫生B类阅读题精选全国职称英语考试卫生B类阅读题精选A proverb allegedly (据说) from ancient China was widely spread in the West:“If you want to be happy for a few hours,go to get drunk;if you want the happiness to last three years, get married:if you want a lifetime happiness, take up gardening.”The reason for the last option is this:Gardening is not only useful;it helps you to identify yourself with nature, and thus brings you new joy each day besides improving your health.A research of a US university that I’ve read gives a definition of happiness as what makes a person feel fortably pleased. To put it specifically, happiness is an active state of mind where one thinks one’s life is meaningful, satisfactory and fortable. This should be something lasting rather than transitory.Lots of people regard it the happiest to be at leisure. But according to the study, it is not a person with plenty of leisure but one at work that feels happy, especially those busy with work having little time for leisure. Happiness does not spell gains one is after but a desire to harvest what one is seeking for. People often do not cherish what they already have but yearn for what they cannot get. That is somewhat like a man indulging in dreams of numerous lovers while reluctant to settle down with the woman beside him.1.Gardening can bring lifelong happiness becauseA.it is a profitable business.B.it can improve a gardener’s ability to remake nature.C.a gardener can enjoy a very happy relationshipin marriage.D.nature is an unexhausted source of joy正确答案:D2.The research of the US university found that most people feel happy when theyA.are at leisure.B.take the job of gardening.C.are after their goals.D.own great properties.正确答案:C3.Why does the writer mention “a man indulging in dreams of num erous lovers” (Lines 5 --6, Para. 3)?A.To demonstrate the problem in marriage in modern society.B.To illustrate a radical way to achieve happiness.C.To criticize those who do not value what they already have.D.To indicate that happiness covers something besides the desire to gain正确答案:D4.What kind of person is more likely to be unhappy according to the study?A.The one who has self-respect and confidence.B.The one who is ambitious without considerationof his actual situation.C.The one who can take pleasure in municating with others.正确答案:B5.What is happiness?A.A transitory state of mind.B.Getting everything what one desires.C.An all-working and no-leisure life.D.A desire based on our actual situation.正确答案:D。

请将答案涂在答题卡相应的位置上。

概括大意题解题思路:1.如果段首句和/或如果段落中有举例的内容,可参考举例内容判断答案;4.注意段落中出现的观点句(观点句中有时出现这样的一些结构:to sum up (adv.总之,总而言之);in a word (adv.总之),in conclusion(adv.

The nation of the Cherokees lived in What is now the southeastern part of the United States. After the white man came, the Cherokees copied many of their ways. One Cherokee named Sequoyah saw how important reading and writing was to the white man. He decided to invent a way to write down the spoken Cherokee language. He began by making word pictures. For each word he drew a picture. But that proved impossible-there were just too many words. Then he took the 85 sounds that made up the language. Using this own imagination and an English spelling book, Sequoyah invented a sign for each sound. His alphabet proved amazingly easy to learn. Before long, many Cherokees knew how to read and write in their own language. By 1828, they were even printing their own newspaper. In 1830, the U.S. Congress passed a law. It allowed the government to remove Indians from their lands. The Cherokees refused to go. They had lived on their lands for centuries. It belonged to them. Why should they go to a strange land far beyond the Mississippi River? The army was sent to drive the Cherokees out. Soldiers surrounded their villages and marched them at gunpoint into the western territory. The sick, the old and the small children went incarts, along with their belongings. The rest of the people marched on foot or rode on horseback. It was November, yet many of them still wore their summer clothes. Cold and hungry, the Cherokees were quickly exhausted by the hardships of the journey. Many dropped dead and were buried by the roadside. Few people know about this new plan to increase the size of our town. For me, Parson's Place is special because it is a beautiful natural area where local people can relax -thesmall wood has many unusual trees and the stream is popular with fishermen and bird-watchers. It's very quiet becausethere are few houses or roads nearby. I think that losing this area will be terrible because we have no other similar facilities in the neighbourhood.I am also against this plan because it will cause traffic problems. How will the people from the new houses travel to work? The motorway and the railway station are on the other side of town. Therefore, these people will have to drive through the town centre every time they go anywhere. The roads will always be full of traffic, there will be nowhere to park and the tourists who come to see our lovelyold buildings will leave. Shops and hotels will lose business. If the town really needs more homes, the empty ground beside the railway station is a more suitable place. No doubt the builders will make a lot of money by selling these houses. But,in my opinion, the average person willquickly be made poorer by this plan. As well as this,we willlose a very special place and our town will be much less pleasant.I am going to the local government offices on Monday morning to protest about this plan and I hope that your readers will join me there. We must make them stop this plan before it is too late.36. Why has Alan written this letter'?A. To perersuade the government to build new houses.B. To protest about a new motorway near the town.C. In 2040 it will not matter. They will turn themselves off —and on again when you return. You will choose the temperature for each room, the lighting and the humidity. A sensor will detect the presence of a human and turn the systems on, and when the humans leave, it will turn them off again. The sensors will work through the central home computer, and they will do much more than just turn the fires and lights on and off for you. They will detect faulty electrical appliances, plugs or switches, isolate them so that they cannot harm anyone, and then warn you that they need repair. They will detect fire and if you are out of the house, the computer will call the fire brigade. It will also call the police should the sensors detect an intruder. This will not be very difficult because the locks on the outside doors will be electronic. You'll open them using your personal card — the one you use for shopping — maybe using a number known only to you.It will be impossible to lose the key, and a house breaker will have to tamper(拨弄) with the lock or with a window. It is not very difficult to make such tampering send a signal to the computer. The computer will be more than a fireman-policeman-servant. It will be an entertainer, and most of your entertainment will come right into your home. It does now, of course, but by 2040 "entertainment" will mean much more. For one thing, youwill be able to take part actively, rather than just waiting.1.What will happen in 2040 according to the writer?A.Lights and heaters will function automatically.B.Temperature will be fixed in all of your rooms.C.A sensor will tell whether you are in or out.D.Household appliances will be rejected. They will turn themselves off — and on again when you return. 2.Which one is NOT mentioned as the function of the sensors?A.They can remind you of repairing the faulty appliances.B.They can detect some burglars.C.They can keep you safe from the dangerous plugs.D.They can call the brigade and the police if necessary. It will also call the police should the sensors detect an intruder.

Preventing Child MaltreatmentChild maltreatment is a global problem with serious life-1ong consequences. There are no reliable global estimates for the prevalence of child maltreatment.Data for many countries。
