选修8 Unit 4 高考试卷分块专练阅读理解提速练(4篇阅读+1篇七选五,限时35分钟)Ⅰ.阅读理解APygmalion is a drama in which Shaw has made sentiments one of the principle themes of discussion. The Greek sculptor Pygmalion carved a statue and fell in love with it. Aphrodite (the goddess of love) turned the statue into a living woman named Galatea, who then became Pygmalion's wife. The Shavian Pygmalion is Henry Higgins, a professor of phonetics, whopicks up a flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, teaches her to speak as educated peopledo, and then successfully passes_her_off_as a duchess. But she is a humanbeing and cannot be treated as a machine. In the course of all his experimentsand exhibitions, the professor only thinks of his own skill success and failure, but never stops to consider how the girl feels. When the experiment is over, hehas a profound sense of relief that he has achieved triumph and has won his bet. Even now,the sentiment of the girl is of no account. The girl naturally protests against this dehumanized relationship between her and her teacher. She hurls the professor's slippers at him when he wants them and then leaves his place. But evidently, she has begun to feel for the professor and wants also to be felt for.Now the question is what is the nature of Eliza's feelings for the professor with whom she has lived in close association for so long? In the last act, the girl says she would not marry him even if he had proposed (求婚) to her. The professor, curiously ineffectual (无效的) to sexual emotions, does not love any girl because he finds them to be rivals (对手) to his own mother. He wonders, if Eliza does not want to marry him, then what does she want from him? Old Mrs. Higgins, who knows much about a woman says that it would have been better if he had thanked her and petted her and told her how wonderful she had been. Then perhaps she would not have fought with him. Every girl loves to be loved. Eliza herself says that she loves Freddy and he also loves her. Professor Higgins, however, remains as ever, an old bachelor. 1.What does the underlined phrase “passes her off as” in Paragraph 2 mean?A.Let her pretend to be.B.Dress her up as.C.Make her become. I was a college freshman and had stayed up most of the night before laughing and talking with friends. Now just before my first class of the day my eyelids were feeling heavier and heavier and my head was drifting down to my desk to make my textbook a pillow. A few minutes' nap time before class couldn't hurt, I thought.Boom! I lifted my head immediately and my eyes opened wider than saucers. I looked around with my heart beating quickly trying to find the cause of the noise. My young professor was looking back at me with a mischievous,_boyish smile on his face. He had intentionally dropped the pile of textbooks he was carrying onto his desk. “Good morning!” he said, still smiling. “I'm glad to see everyone is awake. Now let's get started.”For the next hour I wasn't sleepy at all. It wasn't from the shock of my professor's textbook alarm clock either. Instead, it was from the attractive discussion he led. With knowledge and good humor, he made the material come alive. His insights were full of both wisdom and loving kindness. And the enthusiasm and joy which he taught with were contagious (有感染力的). I left the classroom not only wide awake, but a little smarter and a little better as well.I learned something far more important than not sleeping in class that day too. I learned thatif you are going to do something in this life, do it well, do it with joy, and make it an expression of your love. What a glorious place this world would be if all of us did our work joyously and well! What a beautiful world we could create if every doctor, teacher, musician, cook, waitress, poet, miner, farmer, and laborer made their work an expression of their love! Ⅰ阅读理解A(2018·安徽百所重点高中模拟)I had the honour of being electedchief of my tribe(部落).With the title came great responsibility. It wasmy job to make peace with the Maori Tamaki tribe, whose village wevisited. Their soldiers jumped from a canoe and faced us down with fiercecrying, sticking eyes and much noise of sticks. They laid a palm leaf on the ground and, as head, I was forced to accept this peace offering by picking it up, then touching noses with their chief. “Kia ora,” he said, welcoming us into the woodland home of his people. My “tribe” was my New Zealand coach tour group, who had forced me into being their leader. We had been warned that the ceremony was a serious occasion and that to laugh or even smile would be considered rude to the Tamaki. After that it was nonstop fun as they demonstrated their ancient customs and I received instruction in performing the haka, the war dance immortalized(使不朽) by the All Blacks rugby team. Then they pulled our dinner of lamb, beef and vegetables out of the ground. It had been slowcooked in the heat just below the surface in the geothermal(地热的) area of North Island, a Maori tradition known as a hangi that goes back an extremely long period of time.Obviously, this form of it is put on for tourists but it was hugely enjoyable. The journey back to the hotel was alone worth the effort, our elder Maori driver being deserving of his own television show. “The wheels on the bus go round and round,”he got us singing, while he circuited a round about three times.A couple of days from the end of our trip, there was still something missing, a New Zealand icon I wanted to see to make my grand tour complete. Riding over a ridge, there it was—Aotearoa. The Maori name for New Zealand translates as “the land of the long white cloud”. Can I say “Kia ora, Aotearoa?” You bet I can.【解题导语】 本文是一篇记叙文,作者讲述了他去新西兰旅游时接触到的毛利文化。

Whenever something looks interesting or beautiful, there is a natural desire of us to capture(捕捉) and preserve it—which means, in this day and age, that we are likely to reach for our phones to take a picture.Though this would seem to be an ideal solution, there are two big problems associated with taking pictures. Firstly, we are likely to be so busy taking pictures that we forget to look at the world whose beauty and interest encourage us to take a photograph in the first place. And secondly, because we feel the pictures are safely stored on our phones, we never get around to looking at them, so sure are we that we’ll get around to them one day.The first person to notice the problems was the English art critic(评论家), John Ruskin. He was a keen traveler who realized that mostthemselves on traveling around the whole Europe in a week by train, “No changing of places at a hundred miles an hour will make us stronger, happier, or wiser. There was always more in the world than men could see, if they ever walked slowly. The really precious things are thoughts and sights, not pace.”【解题导语】本文主要讨论了旅游中如何享受美景以及游客普遍存在的问题。

am a volunteer teacher in our local middle school.Recently, while working with my excellent student,I wrote him a note regarding an assignment he needed to work on.“Here,”I said,“keep this with you so you don’t forget.”He took the piece of paper and stared at it for a moment before commenting,“I can’t read this.”I wasn’t sure what he meant,so I examined the note.It was my best cursive(草书).It’s true, then. The news about schools no longer teaching handwriting. But I believe it is necessary for students to learn cursive.First, there continues to be a need to sign “hard copies”of documents. There is a sense of ceremony and a seriousness of purpose about the act of signing something. It calls to mind the signers of the Declaration of Independence.Just look at those signatures!John Hancock’s was so robust (遒劲的) and original that, morethan 200 years later,it still serves as the logo (标识) of a namesake (同名者) insurance company. And why not?It is a work of art.Second,a great part of the history of the United States is recorded in handwritten documents, including personal letters. If one has not been taught to write in cursive,it is unlikely that one will be able to read it.Third, and perhaps most important, when one is trying to learn something, somewhere in the process there must be a slow step.Writing in longhand is a means of slowing down enough to be able to think deeply about what one is penning. In times of budgetary trial, schools often jettison music and art instruction but keep dangerous football. If cursive joins those victims from the curriculum, then it will be the loss of yet one more outlet (发泄途径) through which students are able to say,“This is my mark. This is me.”I still remember in fifth grade,I once handed my finished work to Mrs.Shaw,my handwriting teacher. She looked at it,caught her breath, and said,“Oh,my.I think you’re going to be a writer someday.”Thank you,Mrs.Shaw, for seeing so much in my handwriting.I needed that push.1.The author’s student .A.knew few company.D.It was discovered in a personal letter.3.Which can best replace the underlined word “jettison”in Paragraph 7?A.Focus on.B.Get rid of.C.Depend on.D.Look down upon.4.To the author,Mrs.Shaw’s words were .A.quite interestingB.really confusingC.very encouragingD.pretty disappointingIn the dead of winter,we don't typically think about spending time outdoors, but according to many physicians we should. The sun is our greatest source of a vitamin that is essential for good health—Vitamin D.This important vitamin strengthens bones and teeth and is linked to the prevention of heart disease, cancer and many other lifethreatening diseases. The recommended daily requirement is 400600 International Units(IU).In summer, people with dark brown eyes and darker skin turn sunlight from just 15 minutes outside without sunscreen into adequate amounts of Vitamin D.Even during winter, just a 10minute walk at midday can keep the body's Vitamin D at healthy levels.During brief winter walks,we receive the greatest benefits when we wear no sunscreen and expose as much skin to the sun as possible.Vitamin D can be also obtained from foods.Salmon is one of the best sources of the Vitamin.Egg yolks(蛋黄),cheese, mushrooms and some animal organs contain smaller quantities of it.To attract consumers, food companies add Vitamin D to some of their milk products. The practice of putting the Vitamin into milk began in the 1930s.At that time, many children were suffering from rickets,an illness that is caused by a deficiency (缺乏)of Vitamin D.It made the children's bones soft and weak.Adding Vitamin D to milk helped to solve the problem, and it has been available ever since. For people who still need more Vitamin D,there is another option:Take Vitamin D supplements(补充物).These products are widely sold in stores. However, anyone considering taking supplements should consult a physician first.1.During the winter months, people ________.A.aren't able to meet their Pygmalion李仕才一、阅读理解A business school in Paris will soon begin using artificial intelligence and facial analysis to determine whether students are paying attention in class. The software, called Nestor, is used in two online classes at the ESG business school beginning in September. The idea, according to LCA founder Marcel Saucet, is to use the data that Nestorcollects to improve the performance of both students and professors. The software uses students webcams (网络摄像机)to analyze eye movements and facial expressions and determine whether students are paying attention to a video lecture. It then formulates quizzes based on the content covered during moments of inattentiveness. Professors would also be able to identify moments when students ' attention declin ed, which could help to improve their teaching, Saucet says.Advocates for AI in education say that the software is actually unable to teacha course, but the technology could be used as a digital tutor that would adapt to astudent 's individual needs, and help develop more effective studying habits. Suchsoftware could also help teachers by providing feedback on the effectiveness of their teaching, advocates say.Saucet says Nestor won 't store any of the video footage it gets and that hiscompany has no plans to sell any other data the software collects. In addition to facial recognition and analysis, the software can integrate (合并)with students ' calendars to suggest possible study times, and track their online behavior to pick up on patterns.Rose Luckin, a professor at the University College London Knowledge Lab, says AI could unlock the “black box of learning ” by providing information on how and whenlearning happens. Luckin says a program like Nestor could be useful for students whotake classes remotely, since “there isn 't a human there watching them. ” And while some are concerned that AI may one day replace teachers, Luckin sees the technology more as an assistant, rather than a replacement. Saucet agrees.“Human contact isnot going to go away,he says. “There will always be professors.1. How does Nestor work to find out when students aren ' t paying attention?A.
