The proposed demonstra tion is in complement to the NEESgrid p aper titled “Distributed Hybrid E arthqu ake Engineering Experiments: Experiences with a Ground-Sha king Grid Applica tion” a lso presented a t this conference. It showcases some of NEESgrid’s features a nd ca pa bilities in the a rea of distributed hybrid experiments, a s well a s new fea tures developed since the distributed hybrid experiment wa s conducted. These new features and capabilities are in the areas of simulation portal, electronic notebook, data modeling, and improved live streaming of near real time sensor and video data.1. IntroductionNEESgrid [1] is a NSF funded project to build a national virtual collaboratory for Earthquake Engineers. NEESgrid software builds on the capabilities provided by grid technologies [2] such as security, single sign on, information services, access to heterogeneous distributed resources, remote job execution, secure parallel data transport (GridFTP). NEESgrid enables researchers to:xPerform tele-observation to view EE experiments, sites and participants. The use of commodity hardware, software andcamera provides capabilities to view video feeds and basic camera control. x perform tele-observation of sensor and experimental data in near real-time through streaming data servicesxperform tele-operation-remote access to EE equipment control systems such as Servo Hydraulics of shake tables, reaction walls, centrifuge and robotsxpublish to, and make use of a curated data repository to capture, store and retrieve experimental notes, pictures, designs, sensor data from Data Acquisition (DAQ) etc. using semantically rich data models xprovide access to computational resources and open-source analytical tools, simulation programs through a custom portalxgain access to collaborative tools for experiment planning, execution, analysis, and publication all in a single integrated framework.NEESgrid software makes it possible for the integration of physical experimentation and model-based simulation, computational analysis, and improved testing and validation of increasingly complex and comprehensive analytical and numerical models.2. The MOST ExperimentNEESgrid has enabled a new class of applications called distributed hybrid experiments in the earthquake engineering domain. The term hybrid is used todescribe experiments that comprise of both physical experiments and computational simulations coupled to investigate the effect of earthquakes on man made structures such as buildings, bridges etc. The MO ST (Multi-site Online Simulation Test) experiment [3] was the first NEESgrid experiment designed to investigate the effect of design earthquake ground motion on a two-bay single-story steel structure. Physical experiments at the Newmark Civil Engineering Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and at the Structures and Materials Testing Laboratory at the University of Colorado, Boulder (CU) were coupled with a numerical simulation at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), also in Urbana-Champaign and a 1500 step experiment was performed. The success of the MO ST experiment clearly demonstrates the advantages and viability of the grid based approach to address large scale earthquake engineering problems. 3. The MiniMOST SetupSeveral tabletop sized, emulation of the UIUC part of the MOST experiment called Mini MOST are being built. These provide a low cost verification mechanism of NEESgrid capabilities, and can also be used for training, education, and prototyping of new experiments. The MiniMO ST is built using stepper motors connected to a single beam, 1 meter long and 10 cm wide to emulate the behavior of a column under the application of forces caused by earthquakes.4. Demonstration of NEESgrid CapabilitiesWe intend to recreate the MOST experiment using a workstation at the conference showroom floor (Honolulu, HI), the MiniMOST setup at Washington University in Saint Louis, MO and a NEESgrid Workstation at USC/ISI in Marina del Rey, CA.Depending upon the connectivity and bandwidth, the demonstration will illustrate some of the features of NTCP- the NEESgrid tele-operations control protocol to control the physical experiment running on the MiniMOST in Saint Louis as well as the two computer programs simulating the Colorado physical site and the NCSA simulation program running on a workstations on the showroom floor and in Marina del Rey. Data collected from the DAQ at Saint Louis is to be pushed to a remote repository (such as the Honolulu or Marina del Rey workstation) and viewed.A three site pure simulation of the MO ST experiment will also be demonstrated.The simulation portal providing access to EE simulation programs such asOpenSees and FEDEASLAB is to be demonstrated, along with the ongoing work on data modeling.All NEESgrid services are accessed in a uniform way via the Chef Collaborative environment [4], which provides an extensible set of services. Chef also provides built-in mechanisms for collaborative tools such as chat, calendaring, discussion groups etc. These services will be demonstrated.5.
