Exercise 1: A letter(100 words)

Directions: This part is to test your ability to do practical writing. You are required to write a letter according to the following information.

Suppose you are Bill, who are applying to be the sole agent of Magic in China. You need to write a letter to the sales manager to get authorized.

Write the letter around the following issues in no less than 100 words.

• greet

• show the desire to be the sole agent

• briefly introduce your strength and capacity

• make an appointment for further details

Dear Manager,

How are you getting along these days? I heard that our company is planning to appoint a sole agent for our new product Magic in China,so please allow me to take the liberty of applying for this position.

As one of the sales representatives in our department, I am quite convinced of my personal capability.Because I have carried out plenty of transactions with foreign clients and my monthly sales figures has already reached over USD 5000. In addition, I believe that I have faith in opening China’s market by searching more agents overseas and expanding our sales performance. Besides, could you please tell me whether you are available tomorrow so that we can discuss further details? Look forward to your early reply.

Exercise 2: A Minute 会议记录(150 words)

Directions: This part is to test your ability to do practical writing. You are required to write a minute according to the following information.

Suppose your department are holding a meeting and discussing the branding and pricing of a new brand of perfume. The manager requires you to hand in a minute right after the meeting. The minute should be based on the following reference with no less than 150 words. (严格按照会议记录的格式和要求,不要遗漏信息点。)

• time, date, place, attendees and absentees ;

• the major content of the meeting in detail;

A. Compare other brands in the market and set an appropriate price;

B. Describe the product and emphasize its unique features;

C. Plan some promotional activities

D. Set an initial target market

A meeting was held by Sales Department concerning branding and pricing of a new brand of perfume. Mr. Smith chaired the meeting.

Feature of products

The main characteristics are its natural ingredients and being able to provide long-lasting fragrance. Besides, being stored in a small bottle makes it convenient to carry.

Pricing

According to the marketing research and preliminary evaluation we did before, our customers are quite satisfied with our new product compared with other brands, except for the price. This means that we are supposed to simplify the procedures of manufacturing goods so as to lower the costs and make the perfume be affordable to an ordinary consumer. Namely,USD 50-USD 60 per unit will be reasonable.

Promotional activities

Putting up posters on buses or subways, distributing leaflets in public and putting advertisement on prime time TV.

Providing discounts for large orders.

Initial target market

China is the potential market for its large population and has heavy demand of perfume.
