广西南宁市2023-2024学年高二上学期期末联考英语试卷一、阅读理解There is no better way to immerse yourself in Saskatchewan’s diverse landscapes than by hitting one of the beautiful hiking trails. Here are three hikes to discover.Gem Lakes, Narrow Hills Provincial ParkThe Gem Lakes are located in the Narrow Hills Provincial Park of Saskatchewan. Their waters are fed by springs from the surrounding hills, reflecting the sun and creating gem-like colors. There is a 5-kilometre hiking trail that loops around the tiny lakes. You can bring a tent and spend the night in the campground. The lakes are stocked with fish and many people bring their kayaks to spend the day floating around in the tranquility of the water trying to catch a delicious meal.Nut Point Trail, Lac La Ronge Provincial ParkLocated on a peninsula that extends to the massive Lac La Ronge lake is the Nut Point trail, a 30-kilometre backcountry hike along the spine of billion year old rock. The hiking trail ends with a beautiful spot overlooking the historic Lac La Ronge Lake. Set up your tent on the rocks in order to enjoy the sounds of the water. If you’re lucky, the Northern Lights will explode overhead in night sky. Make sure you bring your bathing suit for a relaxing dip in the cool waters!Sand Dunes (沙丘) Nature Trail, Douglas Provincial ParkHave you ever wanted to walk on a rolling sand dune? There are two places for you. The first are the famous Athabasca Sand Dunes, the world’s most northerly active sand dunes. The second are the Great Sandhills, a 1, 900-square-kilometre protected area. The hike in Douglas Provincial Park sand dunes is a time machine of geological history. As you hike through the fine sand and learn more about what was only here a short 11, 000 years ago, you will appreciate the geological forces that created the province as it stands today.1. The old woman just brought home a Latin Grammy for best new artist, becoming the musical award show’s eldest winner ever. The Cuban American musician’s crowning moment came after decade s of writing songs but performing them only for friends and family. Until she was 90 years old, she went to the Avalon and gave her first concert.“I loved music very much,” Alvarez says. “When I was a child, I had two aunts that played the piano and taught me how to sing. Whenever there was a family gathering, I was the artist; they made dresses for me and I always liked to perform.” Music was always there for her, as it helped her cope with the ups and downs of life: from love and motherhood, to her relentless efforts to reunite her family and the eventual loss of her beloved husband and, years later, of her only daughter, both to cancer.Listening to many of these songs while growing up was especially influential on her grandson Carlos José Alvarez, a professional composer and producer based in Los Angeles who owes his love of music largely to his Nana, as her grandchildren called her. As Angela was getting on in years without ever recording any of her work, he had an inspiration that made him fly quickly to Louisiana to document each and every one of her songs, for “the legacy of our family”.“I hope this entire project inspires young people to sit down and talk to their elders. Ask them questions. Ask them about the dreams they had once upon a time. They will be surprised at what they will find,” Carlos concludes. “If we don’t ask them, they won’t tell us, and their wisdom and dreams will leave with them.”“There are people who give up, but I did not give up, and I always fought,” Angela said during her wining speech. “I promise you that it’s never too late.”4. What can we learn about Angela’s experiences?A.Angela’s songs are all about family love.B.Music provides strong support for her life.C.Angela becomes the most successful musician.D.Angela is always dreaming of giving a concert.5. How did Angela influence her grandson Carlos?A.She taught Carlos how to compose music.B.She helped Carlos record the songs in studio.C.Her songs fueled Carlos’ passion for music.D.Her success inspired Carlos to help the elders.6. Which of the following words can best describe Angela?A.Inspiring and determined. B.Generous and adorable.C.Efficient and ambitious. D.Adventurous and creative.7. What is the author’s purpose in writing this article?A.T o show the ups and downs of Angel’s life.B.To encourage the elder to pursue their dreams.C.To provide a history of the Latin Grammy Awards.D.To highlight Angela’s achievements as an elder musician.“I never know what to say around other people. Whenever I am in a group of people, I feel like everyone knows what to say and I have no idea. When I do try to join in or answer a question, I get anxious. My heart starts thumping. This happens at parties or meetings with parent groups, but I feel judged—as if I were being interviewed for a job. I don’t enjoy these experiences, so I routinely avoid them. People think I am a loner. Maybe I am?”Individuals experiencing this type of social discomfort are often polite and considerate. They do not interrupt others and they say please and thank you when it is appropriate to do so. They often avoid eye contact, because it makes them feel judged. They feel like others can see how uncomfortable they are. Individuals experiencing these symptoms are often very intelligent, but their anxiety prevents them from being able to demonstrate this in front of others.Fitting into most groups of people requires conformity (从众). You need to be interested in the topics that others in the group are interested in and think and talk about them the way they do. Becoming an essential part of these groups requires that you sacrifice some of your individuality in order to adapt your perspectives, values, and styles to fit in.Some individuals are chameleon-like in that they naturally pick up the patterns of relating to different groups and change themselves accordingly. They accommodate themselves to the group. They leave their individuality behind. For some people, this is automatic and they don’t even register that they are changing themselves to fit into groups. However, if you are one of those people who feels disconnected in most social group settings, it may be because your personality refuses conformity. You havedifficulty liking what other people like and you stop changing the way you think in order to feel part of a group. Perhaps it’s better for you to stay true to yourself. Maybe you are better off?8. What is the function of paragraph 1?A.To introduce hard experience of social anxiety.B.To explain why some people avoid eye contact.C.To compare different types of social groups.D.To recommend ways to go for job interviews.9. What would people do when experiencing social discomfort?A.They are mindful of proper social manners.B.They are eager to stop others judging them.C.They tend to observe what others are doing.D.They try to demonstrate their intelligence.10. How can we possibly fit into most groups?A.By improving the communication skills.B.By sharing interest and adapting to others.C.By showing respect and kindness to others.D.By practicing active listening and speaking11. What would the author agree with according to the last paragraph?A.We should abandon our personality to fit in.B.Not changing ourselves is also a good choice.C.Refusing help will turn you away from friends.D.Following suit is a requirement in the society.Despite heavy illegal hunting of rhinos, South Africa’s Kruger National Park is still a natural paradise. One of the largest remaining lion populations in Africa lives there. Yet there is something the local animals fear even more than the big cats.Liana Zanette of Western University in Ontario and her colleagues were able to show that animals react most strongly to human voices and flee in response. For their experiment, the team placed camera traps and loudspeakers at water holes in the national park, which allowed the researchers to influence and record the behavior of a total of 19 mammal species. They played the animals sounds of normal conversations of humans in four South African languages, dogs barking, gunshots and lion sounds. The study group found that animals were twice as likely to flee and yacated an area faster when they heard human voices than when they heard lions or gunshots. This was true for 95 percent of the animal species observed, including giraffes, leopards, hyenas, zebras, kudu, warthogs, impalas and rhinos. Only elephants were significantly more likely to run from lions than from humans. The same was true of the time that animals spent at water holes: they usually stayed longer when lion sounds were played to them than when human voices were heard. Wild dogs, leopards and buffalo were the only animals who stayed at water holes longer when they heard humans, and the difference was not statistically significant for these species. “There is a notion that animals get used to humans when they are not being hunted. But we’ve shown that’s not the case,” Clinchy says. “Fear of humans is deeply rooted and common, so we need to seriously address it for con servation reasons.”The team is now investigating whether its customized sound systems can be used to help endangered species, such as the southern white rhino, away from known poaching(偷猎) areas in South Africa. Initial tests of keeping rhinos away from such areas through the use of human voices have been successful.12. What can we know about South Africa’s Kruger National Park?A.Rhinos are effectively protected in the park.B.Lions are the biggest threat for local animals.C.Human voices cause fear in the local wildlife.D.It is a natural paradise without illegal hunting.13. What does the underlined word “vacated” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A.Occupied. B.Left. C.Encountered. D.Filled. 14. What did researchers find about animals’ reaction to different sounds? A.Elephants are more afraid of humans than lions.B.Giraffes react most strongly to lions or gunshots.C.Rhinos were more likely to run from lions than gunshotsD.Wild dogs stayed at water holes longer when hearing humans15. What is the best title for the text?A.Human Voices: a surprising deep-rooted fear in wildlifeB.Lions: the primary source of threat for the local animalsC.Lion Sounds: the potential use for wildlife protectionD.Humans: the impact on decreasing rhino populationPeople usually consider voluntary work as a completely selfless act, but voluntary work has its place in everyone’s lives, and my personal experiences have confirmed my belief in this.16 I once cleaned up flats where the poor lived in. The space was overcrowded and the items were covered in dust. I couldn’t contain my judgement and was criticalabout them. However, after talking to the residents and hearing about their misfortunes, I regretted my hasty judgment. This allowed me to know more about the less fortunate who don’t share my lifestyles. 17 Life is more complex than expected and I should sympathize with the disadvantaged.Volunteer work has reminded me to cherish and appreciate little things in life. When I volunteered to teach life skills to students with cerebral palsy (脑瘫), I found that they were very grateful to the teachers and assistants by saying “thank you” andsmiling. 18 Consequently, this has made me more mindful of my priorities in life, and more deliberate in not letting insignificant things bother me. Doing voluntary work has taught me to be happier and more grateful.Doing voluntary work has given my life more meaning. 19 However, excessively pursuing them can often lead to increased discon tent and can’t give meaning to one’s life. After doing voluntary work and learning the stories of others, I have a stronger sense of purpose in my life. Instead of just being absorbed in my own wants and needs, I make up my mind to try my best to help those in need. 20A.I felt that they had taught me a lesson on gratitude.B.It is easy to be obsessed with material wants in society.C.I am now able to go through life with more love and compassion.D.Volunteer work has provided me with opportunities to make friends.E.With the determination, the decisions I make are now more meaningful. F.Moreover, I realized they are often unreasonably judged by other people. G.Voluntary work has helped me better understand the lives of the less fortunate.二、完形填空My brother and I were driving home together and started talking. 2023-2024学年福建省福州市六校高二上学期期末联考英语试题

2023-2024学年福建省福州市六校高二上学期期末联考英语试题Homestay provides English language students with the opportunity to speak English outside the classroom and the experience of being part of a British home. What to ExpectThe host will provide accommodation and meals. Rooms will be cleaned and bedcovers changed at least once a week. You will be given the house key and the host is there to offer help and advice as well as to take an interest in your physical and mental health.Meal Plans Available*Continental Breakfast*Breakfast and Dinner*Breakfast, Packed Lunch and DinnerIt's important to note that few English families still provide a traditional cooked breakfast. Your accommodation includes Continental Breakfast which normally consists of fruit juice, cereal, bread and tea or coffee. Cheese, fruit and cold meat are not normally part of a Continental Breakfast in England. Dinner usually consists of meat or fish with vegetables followed by dessert, fruit and coffee.FriendsIf you wish to invite a friend over to visit, you must first ask your host's permission. You have no right to entertain friends in a family home as some families feel it is an invasion of their privacy. Self-catering Accommodation in Private HomesAccommodation on a room-only basis includes a shared kitchen and bathroom facilities and often a main living room. This kind of accommodation offers an independent lifestyle and is more suitable for the long-stay student. However, it does not provide the same family atmosphere as an ordinary homestay and may not benefit those who need to practise English at home quite as much.1. Which of the following will be provided by the host?A.Room cleaning. B.Medical care.C.Physical training. D.Free accommodation.2. What does Continental Breakfast include?A.Cheese and cold meat. B.Fruit and coffee.C.Fruit juice and bread. D.Dessert and tea.3. What's the advantage of self-catering accommodation for students?A.To practice English. B.To be independent.C.To make more friends. D.To enjoy warm family atmosphere. Fresh fish should have a mild smell. Strong fishy smells are the first signs to go bad. How do the fishy smells come from?It can be several days from when the fish are caught to when they reach the supermarket. In that time, bacteria that grow naturally in fish start to consume a substance called trimethylamine N-oxide(TMAO)in fish. These bacteria change TMAO into trimethylamine (TMA), the substance responsible for the fishy smells. Bacteria in fish can also change lysine(赖氨酸)into cadaverine(尸胺), a substance that’s associated with breaking down the fish once they are caught and giving off fishy smell.Chemical reactions can also lead to fishy smells. This happens through the oxidation(氧化)of fat. Fish are an important source of omega-3 fatty acids. When these fats are exposed to oxygen, they oxidize and break down into the substance that you can smell. To slow down the fishy smell, what is beyond question is that the less time between when the fish are caught and when they reach the kitchen, the better. But today, fish are often flown across the globe. To keep smell-producing bacteria at bay, the fish must be frozen or kept at the low temperature possible as soon as they are caught and cleaned.Controlling fat oxidation can function as well, especially for fattier fish species. While freezing slows bacterial growth, it does not stop fat oxidation. This reaction will occur as long as oxygen is present. Fatty fish are usually not frozen b ecause, despite the cold temperature, they’re going to oxidize pretty fast unless they are stored in a low oxygen container. That’s why those species are often canned. It’s also important to remember that smell is not always an indicator of safety, especially in processed fish products. “What you might consider the fishy smell may be a delicacy in another culture,” said Carl A. Batt, a professor of food science at Cornell University.4. Which of the following has the fishy smell?A.Fish fat. B.TMAO. C.Cadaverine. D.Lysine.5. What is the best way to reduce the fishy smell of fat fish species?A.Drying them in the air. B.Storing them in closed containers.C.Carefully cleaning them. D.Exposing them to rich oxygen.6. What is Carl A. Batt’s attitude t o the fishy smell?A.Objective.B.Negative.C.Acceptable.D.Unclear.7. How is the text organized?A.Topic—Example—Conclusion. B.Topic—Comparison—Opinion.C.Question——Cause——Solution. D.Question—Effect—Opinion. Bangladesh's floating gardens, built to grow food during flood seasons, could offer a continuous solution for parts of the world which are likely to suffer from flooding because of climate change, a new study has found.Bangladesh's floating gardens began hundreds of years ago. The gardens are made from native plants that float in the rivers and operate almost like rafts (筏), rising and filling with the waters. Historically, they were used to continue growing food during rainy seasons when rivers were filled with water. The farmers layer the plants about three feet deep, creating a version of raised-bed gardens that float in the water. Then, they plant vegetables inside those rafts. As the raft-plants rot away, they release nutrients, which help feed the vegetable plants. But as climate change affected the volume of water in those rivers, the researchers wanted to understand whether Bangladesh's floating gardens could be a continuous farming practice. They interviewed farming families and found strong evidence that floating gardens provide stability, both in the amount of food available to feed rural populations and in a farming family's income. They found that farmers typically use hybrid (杂交) seeds, which must be repurchased each year, to grow a diverse range of vegetables in the floating gardens. The gardens are also sensitive to pests, so farmers end up spending some money on both pesticides and fertilizers. But even with those expenses, they found, benefits outweighed costs. One farmer told the research team that he earns up to four times as much money from the gardens as from traditional rice fields. However, before gaining profits, farmers often take out high-interest loans (贷款) to cover the investment costs of filling the beds and stocking them with plants. Luckily; there are also lower-interest loans from responsible government or non-governmental organizations, which could ease that burden.8. How do vegetable plants grow according to the text?A.By absorbing nutrition from raft-plants. B.By taking shelter from climate change.C.By living together with hybrid seeds. D.By moving up and down with raisedbeds.9. What might be a reply from farming families interviewed?A.“Our life becomes tough when rivers flood.”B.“Fewer vegetables are planted when water rises.”C.“We harvest muc h more food during rainy seasons.”D.“Climate change has little influence on our income.”10. What does the underlined word “outweighed” in paragraph 5 mean?A.Affected. B.Brought. C.Beat. D.Equaled.11. What can be inferred from the text?A.A solution to climate problem has been found. B.The gardens are built with rotted native plants.C.Farmers earn more from traditional rice fields. D.Low-interest loans lighten the stress of farmers. From rolling hills to mountain ranges, views make any road trip memorable, but for blin d passengers this is part of the experience they miss. Motor company Ford tries to change that. It teamed up with GTB Rom a and AedoProject—to develop a technology that will give those unfortunate passengers a way to feel nature’s be auty through their car windows. The prototype (原型) of the smart car window has a device with an outside-facing camera. With just a press of a button, the system takes a picture of the current view. The colorful picture is then turned into an image with different shades of grey through, LED lights, which vibrates (震动) differently. As the finger passes over different regions of the image, its shaking movements provide feedback through the sense of touch to the person using it. The smart window also comes with a voice assistant that uses AI to identify the scene and help the passengers get information on what they’re seeing.“As the prototype started taking shape, we realized we were giving birth to a completely new language that would give blind people a new c hance to visualize and experience traveling,” Federico Russo.-one director of GTBRoma, said. “When the idea was at its first stage, we looked for suppliers all around the world to make it come to life.” He believes the technology can be employed not just i n cars. “It could be introduced into schools and in stitutions for blind people as a tool that could be used in multiple ways.”The technology may show up in a Ford autonomous vehicle. It’s known that the company is testing their technology and future business model and struggling to figure out how an autonomous vehicle gives different passengers the details needed to get from one destination to another. It’s unclear when this technology will be made available. However, the idea of building something for the less advanced is indeed a kind and influential action.12. How does the smart car window work?A.By sorting shaking movements. B.By recording the view with a camera.C.By translating scenery into vibrations. D.By presenting different shades of colors.13. What can we know about the technology according to Federico Russø?A.It will have wide application. B.It will be used in schools first.C.It will be tested around the world. D.It will understand different languages. 14. What difficulty is Ford facing currently?A.How to explore their future business model.B.How the technology is applied to everyday life.C.How to produce autonomous cars in large numbers.D.How an autonomous vehicle provides route information.15. Which can be the best title for the text?A.AI-based Window Adds Fun to Road TripsB.Ford Develops a System for the Blind to DriveC.Smart Window Lets Blin d Passengers Feel ViewsD.Technology Makes Blind People’s Trip EnjoyableWe eat in our cars, at our desks, on the go, and in front of the TV. We eat take-out, packaged and prepared meals. Why? Because it fits our not-enough-time-in-the-day lifestyles. 16 Well, I’m certainly not the first one to think it or say it, but we all need to slow down.Consumer trends around the globe show that over the past three decades people are purchasing more prepared foods at groceries and eating out more than ever before. It’s predicted that we’ll spend more at restaurants in the coming years. 17 However, we’re getting less healthy. While deba tes can be seen in different media over the food industry’s contribution to our growing waistlines and our health problems, the bottom line is this: 18 We can choose to eat a fast-food lunch on the go. We can throw a frozen meal in the microwave and call it dinner. We can eat without thinking, in front of the tube, at our computers, and while driving a car.19 Studies have shown meaningful links between family meals and kids’ mental and physicalwellbeing. Eating sensibly doesn’t take much time or money, but it does require you to make a conscious decision to do so. Wrapped up in endless work, appointments and social activities, we often fail to enjoy a relaxing meal with our families. While it can be a challenge to always put healthy eating first, just do your best. Remember that the food you eat has a more significant effect on your health, weight and well-being than almost any other activities you do. 20 Every meal made at home — even just once or twice a week — is a step closer to a healthier body and a slower eating style.I still remember how my parents tried to cheer me up at Logan Airport 8 years ago when I was tearing up while waiting in line. People with a food science background and those with a culinary background both know a lot about food, but the things they know are different. “In studying food science, you learn about food functionality, but you don’t really learn how to make it taste good.” Spors said. “To the consumer, it’s all about the taste.”
Being an ice-cream inventor does have its own rewards-who wouldn’t want a chance to create a new ice cream flavor? For Spors, it’s terrific to know his work makes others happy when he goes to the grocery store and seessomeone buy ice cream he developed.

They were left anonymously(匿名地) in a bright pink gift bag containing the original blue box the notebooks were kept in and a plain brown envelope, on which was printed a short message: “Librarian, Happy Easter X.”With an action plan to use advanced information technology to preserve important culture heritage, the notebooks were originally removed from the Special Collections Strong Rooms — where the rarest and most valuable items are kept — for photography to take place at the library in September 2000, with the photography request completed in November 2000. During a following routine check in January 2001, it was found that the small box containing the two notebooks had not been returned to its proper place. For many years, previous university librarians believed that the notebooks had been misplaced in the vast storerooms and collections of Cambridge University Library. Despite a number of searches over the years, they remained undiscovered. At the start of 2020, a new search — the largest in the library’s history – was arranged by the librarian Dr Gardner involving specialist staff assigned to search specific zones of the library’s storage facilities. However, this failed to locate the notebooks, leading to the conclusion, with the help of national experts in cultural heritage theft and recovery, that they had likely been stolen. In July 1837, Charles Darwin wrote at the top of the page of one of his notebooks, “I think”. Then he drew a sketch(草图)of a tree, attempting to pose to himself the question about what is the origin of species. More than 20 years later, Darwin published On the Origin of Species. Notebooks B and C provide an extraordinary insight into Darwin’s search for the solution to what public in those days had called “that mystery of mysteries”, the origin of new species.19.What can we learn from the passage?A.Notebooks B and C used to be kept in a plain brown envelope.B.It took over 3 months to complete the photography in the library.C.At first the librarians believed the notebooks hadn’t been stolen.D.Charles Darwin searched the origin of trees in his notebooks.20.Why were Notebooks B and C taken away from their original place?A.They were no longer regarded as the rarest and most valuable items.B.They had to make room for the photography of special collections.C.They would be presented for a photography exhibition in the library.D.They needed to be recorded by taking photos for better preservation.21.When did the library confirm the theft of the notebooks?A.After completing the photography.B.After routine check in January 2001.C.After the largest search in history.D.After discovering the returned notebooks.22.Which is this passage most likely taken from?A.A textbook.B.A newspaper.C.A science report.D.An introduction to a book.Cartoons suit the way we like information to be presented these days: vividly and in small amounts. We are used to cartoons and comic series that take a biting look at modern life or provide a bit of escapism. But recently we have seen an increase in the number of comic books: booklength comics with a single, continuous narrative. Historically, comic books were not popular outside France, Belgium, Japan, and the US. The exception is the worldwide popularity of a young reporter-detective from Belgium, Tintin. The creation of the Belgian cartoonist Herge, The Adventures of Tintin first appeared in a Belgian newspaper in 1929. Each story appeared as a cartoon series week by week, but soon after was republished in book form. One of the main attractions for readers was that they were taken to parts of the world they had never seen and probably never would: Russia, Congo, America. Herge himself only traveled outside Belgium later in life, but his passion was educating his readers about other cultures and places. Two things set Herge apart as a comic novelist. The first was his technical drawing skills:with just a few simple lines he could communicate a particular facial expression or movement. The second was the careful research he put into his stories. In The Crab with the Golden Claws, Tintin follows an opium-smuggling (鸦片走私) ring to North Africa; in King Ottakar’s Scepter, he makes an attempt at a military coup (政变) in a central European country. While telling these stories, Herge also made a fine balance between serious topics and humor.Tintin had more than his fair share of adventures, but perhaps the greatest is his journey to the Moon, told in Destination Moon and Explorers on the Moon. Written in 1953, sixteen years before the first Moon landing, the stories show a remarkable eye for technical detail and feeling for the nature of space travel. In the early 1950s, few could imagine what it was like to be looking down at our planet from outer space. And that is Herge’s true gift: to understand what a place was like without ever having been there.23.What can be learned about comic books from the passage?A.They mostly involve detective stories.B.They were just popular in several countries.C.They present information in small amounts.D.The Adventures of Tintin is the world’s first comic book.24.Which of the following is an attraction of The Adventures of Tintin for readers?A.The stories were created in Belgium, a European country.B.The stories were the first comic novel published in book form.C.The stories used to be cartoon series that appeared week by week.D.The stories enable them to learn about places they have never been to.25.Why are The Crab with the Golden Claws and King Ottakar’s Scepter taken for examples?A.To show Herge liked touching on serious topics.B.To show Herge based stories on research results.C.To illustrate Herge himself had a good sense of hurnor.D.To illustrate Herge was expert at applying technical drawing skills.26.Which of the following statements is true of Herge?A.He had been longing for a trip to the Moon.B.He never had any chance to leave Belgium for travelling.C.He could describe accurately those experiences he never had.D.He devoted himself to education before creating comic books.Napping (小睡) may be part of life for most of us. However, some countries where daytime naps have long been part of the culture, such as Spain, now discourage the habit. Meanwhile, some companies in the US now promote napping as a way to boost productivity. “It’s important to try to reveal the biological pathways that contribute to the reason why we nap,” says Dashti from Harvard Medical School.Previously, co-senior author Richa Sexena at Massachusett s General Hospital (MGH) and his colleagues used many databases of genetic and lifestyle information to study other aspects of sleep. To gain a better understanding of the genetics of napping, they performed a genome (基因组)-wide association study (GWAS), which includes rapid scanning of complete sets of DNA of a large number of people. For this study, the researchers used data from the UK Biobank, which includes genetic information from 452,633 people. All the participants were asked to classify their naps during the day as “never/ rarely”, “sometimes” or “usually”. The GW AS identified 123 regions in the human genome connected with daytime napping. Then the participants wore activity monitors called accelerometers, which can provide data about daytime napping. This data also showed that the self-reports about napping were accurate.Several other features of this study support its results. For example, the researchers obtained similar findings in an analysis of the genomes of 541,333 people collected by 23andMe, a consumer genetic-testing company. Also, a significant number of the genes near or at regions identified by the GW AS are already known to play a role in sleep. The team also identified at least three potential mechanisms (机制) that promote napping. Some people need more shut-eye than others. A daytime nap can help make up for poor-quality sleep the night before. People who rise early may “catch up” on sleep with a nap. “This tells us that daytime napping is biologically driven and not just an environmental or behavioral choice,” says Dashti. Some of these mechanisms are linked to health concerns, such as a large waistline and increased blood pressure, though more research on those associations is needed.27.What did the researchers at MGH focus on in their new study?A.The causes of long napping time.B.The benefits of napping frequently.C.The reasons behind the napping habit.D.The genes contributing to poor sleeping quality.28.What can we know from the text?A.The subjects of the GW AS came from 123 regions.B.Activity monitors were used to ensure reliability of the results.C.Researchers are looking for more genes that can play a role in sleep.D.American companies encourage nappíng to make people feel at ease. 29.According to Dashti, what will the researchers study next?A.The ways to help people improve their sleep quality.B.The causes of and solutions to some health concerns.C.The impact of environment on people’s napping choice.D.The connection between some health problems and the mechanisms.30.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A.Health issues caused by daytime napping.B.Napping considered to be an essential habit.C.Researchers working hard to promote napping.D.Biological factors playing a role in daytime napping. If I could offer you a magic drug that would make you happier, more optimistic and more productive, and cost nothing and will require very little effort, would you be interested?why can gratitude improve our productivity and results?32 We learn the importance of saying “thank you” as little children. This childhood lesson is extremely of great use. 33 How do you feel about them? Does their appreciation positively impact your relation with them? Of course it does! So be grateful for people, their contributions and their actions and make sure you let them know how you feel.Gratitude improves problem solving skills. 34 However, when we think about what we are grateful for, we open our minds up to new possibilities and connections. We also enter a problem solving situation with a perspective of opportunity rather than challenge or issue.Gratitude helps us learn. Every dark cloud has a silver lining. 35 Being gratefulfor our situation, even if we don’t like everything about it, allows us to be thankful for opportunity to learn something new.So the more aware and grateful we are of what we have and our capabilities, the more capable and elective we become in living.A.Gratitude improves attitudes.B.Gratitude improves relationships.C.Behind every problem lies an opportunity.D.Being more grateful often makes us more joyful and more optimistic.E.Think about those people you know — who are most appreciative of you.F.Too often we look at problem solving with a very bored or exhausted view.G.Grateful people experience fewer aches and pains and report feeling healthier.三、完形填空During my stay at the University of Michigan, one of the senior professors asked me to36.A.analysis B.state C.letter D.round 37.A.understated B.interesting C.dramatic D.proud 38.A.set B.fit C.evaluate D.recommend 39.A.approach B.situation C.topic D.course 40.A.curiosity B.pity C.disappointment D.embarrassment 41.A.play B.dine C.work D.perform 42.A.support B.noise C.fun D.arguing 43.A.sank B.melted C.raced D.opened 44.A.harmonious B.normal C.strong D.distant 45.A.date B.shape C.place D.sight 46.A.reliable B.good C.serious D.careful 47.A.gratitude B.respect C.admiration D.affection 48.A.total B.advance C.detail D.reality 49.A.unbelievable B.pure C.invisible D.powerful 50.A.level B.culture C.standard D.value四、单词拼写51.I was listening carefully but I could not take in everything he said. This impressionistic journey skips ahead and back through decades to tell the story of Mack, whose upbringing in rural Mississippi is touched by grace, dotted with heartbreak, and always carried high in the sky by the surrounding natural beauty. As she ages, she loses loved ones and gains others, while making decisions that change the course of her life, and that of her beloved sister. It was what he observed in his boyhood that took root in his pursuit of becoming a biologist. After he finished his study at university. Fritz landed work at Austria’s Konrad Lorenz Research Center, raising raven chicks by hand and teaching graylag geese how to open boxes as he pursued his PhD. Working this closely with free-living animals was exactly what he’d dreamed of as a boy.In 1997, a zoo gave the research center its first northern bald ibis chicks(隐鹮)Nowhere near as teachable as geese—and not even close to super intelligent ravens—the ibises frustrated most of the scientists. But Fritz was fascinated. He devoted himself to taking care of them. After the ibises were first released back into the wild more than 20 years ago, Fritz learned that spending generations in zoo hadn’t reduced their drive to migrate(迁徙), though it did leave them geographically uninformed. In their search for “south”, some ended up in Russia. What the ibises needed, Fritz thought, was a guide.Fritz decided he would teach the birds a new, safer migration route by guiding them himself in a tiny aircraft. And he was confident he could succeed in this daring, unconventional plan—because he had done it before. ”Around that time, the movie ‘Fly Away Home’ was a huge hit with us biologists,“ Fritz says. When he announced that he’d do the same with t he ibises, he was initially laughed at. But Fritz didn’t give up. He modified an ultralight aircraft so it would travel at speeds slow enough for his winged students to keep up. He had been his young pupils’ only provider of food, love and hugs since they were just a few days old, and the ibises eagerly followed their teacher, who just happened to pilot a fairly noisy machine. In 2004, three years after some initially bumpy(颠簸的)experiments, Fritz led the first batch of birds from Austria to Italy, and has since led 15 such migrations. Over that time, he has rewilded 277 young ibises, many of which then started to pass the route on to their own young.4. What is Fritz like according to the passage?A.sensitive but courageous. B.innovative but demanding.C.persistent and insightful. D.enthusiastic and cooperative.Imagine this: You walk into a place and the atmosphere is light and airy. The subtle scent of coffee beans fills the air and everyone that approaches you is friendly and welcoming. You’re comfortable and feel like you belo ng. As in most cities, it’s a place where people meet, discuss ideas, and conduct business. After taking a few sips of that Caramel Macchiato, you immediately get that feeling of energy and optimism. Perhaps it’s partly due to the caffeine and sugar rush, or maybe it’s that the presence of a Starbucks typically indicates a city on the rise.In December of 2017, Trenton’s first Starbuck’s café was opened to the public at 102 Warren Street. Walking in, people living in Trenton scream at everything about this café, from the diverse but local stuff to the Trenton themed décor(室内装饰)and art. To make things better, this Starbucks also serves as an ”opportunity café“ which essentially means the young people in our communities are recruited and offered job training and employment. This program not only uplifts our youth, but also increases the amount of minority business in the city.In the interviews with customers, a trend in responses arose. To many, the Starbucks was a ”favorite place to stop in after work“ and provided ”a very relaxing environment.“ The staff were often highly praised, noted as being friendly, helpful, and working in harmony. The interior décor of the caféstruck a lot of people’s attention, given the familiarity of the atmosphere. Painted on th e walls, all around the store, are murals(壁画)with bright, colorful, graffiti-like designs very sui generis in Trenton, showcasing local monuments like the State House and the famous ”Trenton Makes“ bridge. This new Starbucks brings a sense of modernity to Downtown Trenton and reminds us that our city is always developing. Open from 6 a. m. until 7 p.m. every day, the building is hardly ever empty. This space is made for everyone in Trenton, even the non-coffee lovers.8. What is the major function of Paragraph 1 in the passage?A.To present an introduction to the topic.B.To set a background for the main theme.C.To summarize the main idea of the passage.D.To describe a common phenomenon for the readers.9. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A.People are amazed at the number of job opportunities provided by the Starbucks.B.”Opportunity café“ program helps achieve booming economy and bring spiritual benefits.C.Most respondents regarded the Starbucks as a harmonious and entertaining workplace.D.Numerous people are attracted to stop in after work by the murals with original designs. 10. What does the underlined word ”sui generis“ mean in Paragraph 3?A.Substantial. B.Delicate. C.Inspirational. D.Unique.11. What could be the best title for the passage?A.Starbucks Is Designed for EveryoneB.Starbucks Gains Popularity in TrentonC.Starbucks Sets an Atmosphere of ProgressD.Starbucks Creates More Job OpportunitiesIn recent years American society has become increasingly dependent on its universities to find solutions to its major problems. It is the universities that have been to blame for developing the expertise to place men on the moon; for dealing with our urban problems and with our worsening environment; for developing the means to feed the world’s rapidly increasing population. The effort involved in meeting these demands presents its own problems. In addition, however, this concentration on the creation of new knowledge significantly impinges on the universities’ efforts to perform their other principal functions, the transmission and interpretation of knowledge-the imparting of the heritage of the past and the preparing of the next generation to carry it forward. With regard to this, perhaps their most traditionally acknowledged task, college and universities today find themselves in a serious situation. On one hand, there is the American commitment, especially since World War Ⅱ, to provide higher education for all young people who can profit from it. The result of the commitment has been a dramatic rise in enrollments(登记入学) in our universities, coupled with a striking shift from the private to the public sector of higher education. On the other hand, there are serious and continuing limitations on the resources available for higher education. While higher education has become a great ”growth industry“, it is also at the same time a tremendous drain(耗竭) on the resources of the nation. With the vast increase in enrollment and the shift in priorities away from education in state and federal(联邦的) budgets, there is in most of our public institutions a significant decrease in expenses for their students. One crucial aspect of this drain on resources lies in the persistent shortage of trained faculty(全体教师), which has led, in turn, to a declining standard of competence in instruction.Intensifying these difficulties is, as indicated above, the concern with research, with its increasing claims on resources and the attention of the faculty. In addition, there is a strong tendency for the instit utions’ organization and functioning to fulfill the demands of research rather than those of teaching.12. According to Paragraph 1, what should be the most important function of American universities?A.Sparing no effort to create new knowledge for students.B.Enhancing students’ competence of tackling social problems.C.Making experts on advanced industries out of their students.D.Preparing their students to transmit the knowledge of the past.13. In American universities, there is a contradiction between________.A.more students and less investment B.education quality and economic profitC.low enrollment rate and high education demand D.private ownership and American commitment14. A serious outcome brought about by the shortage of resources is that________.A.many public institutions have to cut down enrollments of studentsB.teachers are not competent enough to perform satisfactorily in classC.some institutions are forced to reduce the total expenses on researchD.there is keen competition for resources between public and private institutions15. What worsened the severity of the problems faced by American universities?A.The improper distribution of American universities’ resources.B.The increasing argument over American universities’ pr imary task.C.The inability of American universities’ organization and fulfillment.D.The growing focus on American universities’ function of research. There’s nothing more frustrating than a parent saying “no” to something you really want, whether it’s a dog, or a new phone. 16 However, there are a lot of simple things you can do to help you convince your parents to give you what you want!Pick the right time to approach the subject. Usually, family dinner time is a safe bet. It is not a good idea to ask for something when either parent seems stressed, distracted, or tired. 17 Especially not if they’re upset at you.Maintain a calm tone during the talk. Asking for something can be an emotional experience: you might feel passionate about the thing you’re asking for, and you might feel angry or frustrated if your parents say no. 18 Studies show negotiation is more successful if it’s done peacefully a nd rationally.Be patient and give them time to think about it. 19 Tell them to get back to you in a couple hours or days with any questions or concerns they have. Let them know that you want to discuss this as mature, responsible adults and you are willing to work through any potential issues. Say it like that, and you’ll be sure to impress them with how well-rounded and balanced your argument is.20 Before you go to your parents to ask for that new puppy, make sure you know exactly what adopting a p et requires. Having a good understanding of what you’ll be asking your parents aboutwill help you present your case successfully; by knowing your topic inside and out, you’ll have confident answers for their (many, many) questions.I could feel the excitement rising in me as I held the beautifully wrapped present in my hands. Some are native(当地的)to Australia and can only be found there. There are over 600 animals there, including kangaroos, koalas and crocodiles(鳄鱼).They are kept in their natural environment. I like the Wildlife Park better than a zoo where most of the animals are in cages. We first spent some time with the kangaroos. We were allowed to touch and feed them. It was very exciting to be so close to them. There were koalas there too. They looked very cuddly(令人想拥抱的). Although we were not allowed to carry them, I got to take a photo with one. It is a wonderful souvenir of my holiday in Sydney. The Wildlife Park has plenty of freshwater and saltwater crocodiles. Some of them are really big and scary with huge teeth! I did not want to get too close to them. There was also a bird show. The keepers showed us different species they had. I saw an old parrot which could “talk”. It made a great impression on me.I enjoyed the trip very much. There was so much to see.4. Where is the Wildlife Park?A.In Sydney.B.In Cairo.C.In Paris.D.In Rome.5. What is a wonderful souvenir of the writer's holiday?A.A parrot that could talk.B.A chance to feed a kola.C.A photo with a kola.D.Food for the kangaroos.6. Why didn't the writer want to get very close to the crocodiles?A.They lived in water.B.The writer was afraid of them.C.The writer did not want to feed them.D.The writer did not like the smell of saltwater.7. Which of the following is TRUE?A.The kangaroos are kept in cages in the Wildlife Park.B.The writer traveled to the Wildlife Park alone.C.The writer went to see koalas first.D.The writer watched a bird show.CIf you’ve ever wondered who decides what sports to be included or left out a t the Olympic Games, you’re probably not the only one, because the processes are a little complex and confusing. It falls to the Executive Board of International Olympic Committee ( IOC ) to suggest which sports will be included and the rest of the IOC then votes according to a long list of standards: How muchvalue the sport would add to the Olympic legacy (遗产); How long the sport has existed; How popular the sport is in the host country; How much it would cost to broadcast the events, and many other things.Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games saw the inclusion of skateboarding, surfboarding, sport climbing and karate, all of which were selected by the IOC for the first time ever. So, what contributes to sport being left out Having to limit the Games to a certain number of athletes, as well as scheduling needs can lead to some sports being left off the program, especially if they fall short of the above standards. There’s perhaps no better example of this than softball and baseball. While both are included at Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, it’s the first time they were included at Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. The IOC voted them out from London 2012 Olympic Games. Officials said that neither sport had global attraction. But it’s not just the IOC that has the say. The host city can also play a role in the decision, and push for a particular sport for the year that it is hosting. For a real-world example, look no further than the 2024 Games to be held in Paris, which will see the inclusion of breakdancing as an Olympic sport for the first time.8. What does the second paragraph focus onA.The voting process. B.The advantages of IOC.C.The costs of the Games. D.The selecting standards.9. Which was added to Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games for the first timeA.Baseball. B.Breakdancing. C.Skateboarding. D.Softball. 10. Why was baseball left out at London 2012 Olympic Games A.It had too many players. B.It had a short history.C.It was difficult to broadcast. D.It was not popular enough. 11. Who is most unlikely to have a say in selecting the Olympic sportsA.The athletes. B.The Executive Board of IOC.C.The host cities. D.International Olympic Committee.DKyle Cassidy and three other members of the Annenberg Running Group were stretching on the grounds of the University of Pennsylvania, waiting for a few latecomers. The Penn colleagues and other community members meet three days a week for a roughly 30-minute jog and an occasional lecture. That's right― during some runs, one of them delivers a talk. Topics range from the brain to Bitcoin. But on this day last January, it would not be their normal run. The first clue that something was off was the man who sprinted pastthem. "Running at an amazing pace," Cassidy told Runner's World admiringly. Cassidy discovered why the sprinter was so fleet of foot when another man ran by, yelling, “Help! He took my phone and laptop!"At that, the group did what running clubs do: They ran, trailing the suspect down the streets of Philadelphia until he ducked into a construction site. The runners split up. Cassidy ran around to the far side of the site to cut the thief off while the others wandered the neighborhood hoping he had dumped the loot (赃物)in a backyard. No luck. So they decided to ask residents whether they'd seen the guy. When they knocked on the door of one row house, they were in for a surprise. Unknown to them, he had already emerged from the construction site—and was hiding behind a bush by that very house. As the owner opened the door, the suspect darted out from behind the bush ... and right into the arms of campus police, who'd joined the chase shortly behind the runners. The members of this running group are not hard-core athletes. But they do understand the benefit of a little exercise. ''Running is typically a useless sport where you turn fat cells into heat," Cassidy told The Philadelphia Inquirer. "But occasionally it can be useful, and here was one of those opportunities."12. Why do the group members gather togetherA.To do some stretching. B.To have a regular run.C.To deliver a lecture. D.To cover some topics.13. What does the underlined word "sprinted" in Paragraph 2 probably meanA.Dashed. B.Pushed.C.Jumped. D.Escaped.14. We can infer that the success of the chase is mainly due to . A.the assistance of the runners B.the owner of the row house C.the campus police on patrol D.the joint efforts of the people 15. Which of the following best describes CassidyA.Athletic and generous. B.Courageous and ambitious. C.Helpful and humorous. D.Thoughtful and demanding.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

We walked our dog twice a day, watered the dozens of potted plants, and wandered around, enjoying the break from our usual routines. One morning, as we packed up for a day at the beach, a voice told me to do a final sweep through the house before leaving. Thankfully, I listened to it. In my grandson’s room I saw a thin curl of smoke rising from his bed. An old lamp was bent over the mattress, and the hot bulb and metal shade were burning a hole in it. I felt sick. Had we left without seeing the lamp, the house could have burned down. It was an old wooden structure with no watering system; it probably didn’t even have a smoke alarm. We went on with our planned day at the beach. Every so often the close call would crowd into my mind, and my heart would race. I imagined having to contact the owners to tell them their home, filled with family photos, art, and books, had been destroyed. “Thank God it didn’t happen.” I whispered to myself. We finished our stay, leaving a few hours before the owners returned. When I spoke to them on the phone, I offered to buy them a new mattress and recommended they replace the lamp.A few weeks later I received a note from the wife, telling me her husband had died from an infection he’d gotten while hiking on their trip. At first they’d thought it was no big deal, but six days after their return home, he was dead! It occurred to me then that if we had burned their house down, they would have come home early — perhaps before that hike. They wouldhave been angry and sad, and I would have been filled with guilt. All my life I would have thought — Oh my God, I ruined their lives! We never know, when misfortune happens, what other far worse disaster we might have avoided.4.What does the underlined phrase “close call” in Paragraph 3 mean?A.Timely arrival.B.Narrow escape.C.Concrete decision.D.Immediate success.5.Why did the author feel thankful about the near fire incident?A.Because they took their trip as planned.B.Because they offered to buy a new lamp.C.Because they informed the owners immediately.D.Because they avoided disastrous consequences.6.What might have happened if they hadn’t discovered the potential danger?A.The owners might have returned home earlier.B.The owners would have been pleasantly surprised.C.The house would have been damaged by flooding.D.They would have enjoyed their trip without any incidents.7.What conclusion does the author reach at the end of the story?A.The necessity of always being prepared.B.The unpredictable nature of life’s events.C.The need to pay attention to potential dangers.D.The importance of following safety guidelines. In the movie The Wrong Trousers, a pair of futuristic trousers lets people walk on walls and ceilings. Inspired by the movie, researchers in England created “The Right Trousers,” a set of trousers embedded (嵌入) with electrical pumps to force air into tiny tubes (软管) that expand and can help elderly or disabled people with issues like getting up or improving blood flow. Now, material scientists, computer programmers and fabric designers are working to advance robotic clothing. In June, researchers in Australia created robotic fibers, which can make fabric move automatically. Last year, scientists at MIT built fiber batteries that could be embedded into clothes and power robotic clothing. In recent years, Google partnered with brands like Levi’sand Adidas to put sensors in jackets, backpacks and shoes, letting users access their phones instantly. Researchers said they could soon unlock an era where clothing will act more like a computer, sensing how your body feels and telling your clothes how to help.At the University of New South Wales in Australia, researchers are creating fabrics that car shape-shift. Thanh Nho Do, a senior lecturer at the school, said his team has created tiny tubes that can weave into sheets of fabric. These tubes can make fabric take various preprogrammed shapes. But challenges still remain for Do’s team, especially around making these robotic tubes smaller so they can weave easily with other fabrics.Rebecca Kramer-Bottiglio from Yale University agreed that many challenges remain before smart clothing reaches their full potential. “It will be challenging to make these clothes, equipped with fibers and technology, strong enough to go through multiple cycles in the laundry (衣店),” she said. Despite that, she says researchers will figure out a way forward. “Recent breakthroughs,” she said, “point toward a not-so-distant future where smart clothing will be a part of our everyday life. ”8.What did scientists at MIT do last years?A.They put sensors in clothes.B.They created movable robotic fibers.C.They made batteries for robotic clothing.D.They released smart clothing connected to cellphones.9.What is the main challenge faced by Do’s team?A.Ensuring the quality of the fabric.B.Finding suitable materials for the fabric.C.Programming the tubes to change shapes.D.Adjusting tubes to weave with other fabrics.10.What can be inferred about smart clothing according to Rebecca’s?A.It struggles to stand repeated washes.B.It will not be a part of everyday life soon.C.It will never overcome laundry-related challenges.D.It has all related challenges solved by researchers.11.Which could be the best title for this passage?A.The evolution of smart trousersB.The future of laundry innovationsC.Smart fabric may shape future wardrobeD.Smart clothing’s impact on everyday lifeGoing to the Basque Country of Spain, linguistically (就语言角度来看), a Briton may feel he is entering not just another country but perhaps another continent. Familiar world languages — Spanish and French — suddenly give way to Basque, with its strange-looking words of tongue-twisting (绕口的) length. Basque is unrelated to the Indo-European family that includes almost all European languages. Its survival has not been assured. The rule of Francisco Franco from 1939 to 1975 centralised the state and he insisted that citizens speak Spanish. Public use of Basque was forbidden. When Franco died, the Basque-speaking population was mostly old and rural. For a language, this usually means extinction.Since the 1980s the number of speakers has grown by almost 350,000, out of a regional population of 2. 1 million. In 2017 two-thirds of pupils were studying in schools where Basque was the language of instruction, up from around 14% in 1984; 87% of 10 to 14-year-olds are estimated to know the language. This is why, in the most recent big survey, the Basque-speaking population (41%) almost matched the non-Basque-speakers (44%). The other 15% are said to understand Basque but struggle to speak it.But there is another side to the story. In the Basque Country, just 376,000 people have the language as their first, passed down to them in the home. Basque is weakest in the three provincial capitals, where the population is dominated by people from Spanish-speaking homes. Even as the knowledge and influence of the language are growing, actual usage outside schools still seems to be reducing. A similar story could be told of Irish, Welsh, and Maori. What would it take to get people to live with these languages, as opposed to merely acquiring them? Some Basques say sadly that in a mixed group in which just one person is uncomfortable in Basque, the rest quickly switch to Spanish. They say that in Catalonia, a similar group is more likely to insist on continuing in Catalan, which, for this and unrelated historical reasons, is far more widely spoken in its territory than Basque.12.What confused a Briton when entering the Basque Country of Spain?A.Basques tend to have a large vocabulary.B.Spanish is much more widely used than French.C.Basques speak much faster than other Europeans.D.Basque differs significantly from other European languages.13.What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?A.The factor behind Basque’s decline.B.The achievements of Francisco Franco.C.The links between Basque and Spanish.D.The history and development of Basque.14.What has helped increase Basque speakers since the 1980s?A.Population growth.B.School educationC.Economic development.D.Cultural awareness.15.What challenge is Basque facing now?A.It leads to discomfort in Basque.B.It will soon be replaced by Catalan.C.It is decreasingly used in daily life.D.It confuses many Spanish speakers. How to Be Authentic (真实的)A lot of people tend to put on different faces around different people, or tailor their personality based on context. Nevertheless, when a person is authentic, they stay true to themselves and act in ways that show how they feel. 16 Now, let’s explore some practical tips that can guide you on the path to being authentic.Accept yourself for who you are. 17 Try to be slower to criticize yourself or see yourself not as good as others. Focus on accepting and appreciating who you are as a unique individual. This will lead to authentic behaviors in line with your personality.Don’t put on a different face or personality for social functions. In order to be authentic; simply be yourself in all social and interpersonal contexts. 18 However, it is not authentic, and other people will see through you quickly. Of course, it’s only natural to slightly modify your behavior and vocabulary around certain people. You talk to your boss differently than you talk to your partner.Express your thoughts and feelings. 19 Authentic people are comfortable speaking their mind and communicating when they have a problem or are appreciative of something. If you feel uneasy to speak your mind, or realize that you frequently only say what you think those around you expect to hear, you’re likely to behave in-authentically.20 It not only builds genuine relationships but also contributes to a sense of innerpeace and self-satisfaction. Remember, the journey towards authenticity is ongoing and develops with self-discovery and life experiences.A.Express gratitude to those around you.B.This can be perceived as insincere or rude.C.Talk about your opinion when it matters to you.D.This often requires a mental attitude adjustment.E.Being authentic is about being true in thoughts, feelings, and actions.F.Sometimes you may tend to act the way you think others want to impress them.G.They also display a consistent set of values, and don’t change their behavior at will.二、完形填空At around 9 a. m. on Friday, Bonnie Raitt stopped at a picnic area along a highway. 第二部分: 阅读理解。(共两节满分40分) 第一节(共15题,每小题2分,满分30分) A Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling or swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be a game of some form---football, basketball, hockey, golf or tennis. It may be mountaineering. Those who have apassionfor climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with surprise. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks in high mountains? This astonishment is caused, probably, by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their free time. Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules, as others, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of different kinds which would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods. If we compare mountaineering with other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game”. We should be mistaken in this. There are, it is true, no “matches” between “teams” of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork. The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities. A mountain climber continues to improve in skills year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty. But it is not unusual for men of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they perhaps climb with more skills and less waste of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment. 21.Mountaineering is a sport, not a game because ________. A. there is not certain rule for climbers to follow. B. it is too dangerous for climbers C. it can’t bring people joy and leisure D. it has man-made rules. 22. According to the author, the only enemy of mountaineers should be _____? A. temperature B. nature C. climate D. patience 23. The underlined word “passion” in Paragraph 2 could be replaced by ________ A.enthusiasm B. taste C. gift D. strength
