The couple, who live on Pender Island in BritishColumbia, Canada, decided to start a year-long challenge where they wouldn't buy a single thing to eat. Instead they would grow, raise or catch everything—right down to sugar, salt and flour. Now, five months in, they say the challenge has changed their lives.Chris, 38, said, “It has always been something that we have wanted to do. We have had a garden and grown vegetables for a long time already. When the COVID-19 hit, it gave us that extra push that we needed to do it. We were both out of work when we started, and with the reality check of grocery stores running out of items, it gave us even more motivation to see if we could look after ourselves.”The pair spent the months before building a house for chickens, ducks and turkey as well as studying as much as possible to figure out where they would get all the things they needed. Chris adds, “We had to learn so many new things like how to grow mushrooms, process our Stevia plants, and harvest salt from the ocean. We spent a lot of time reading and studying online to figure out all the things we were going to need to do.”Now after five months, they both feel its been going well but Chris admits the first few weeks were difficult. “The first three weeks were very challenging as our bodies adjusted to cutting out coffee, wine and sugar all on the same day,” he says. “After three weeks our energy levels balanced out and our wishes reduced and now we feel great.” Now February has ended. As they come through winter, they feel positive about continuing with this way of living, with their challenge officially ending in August.4. Why did the pair decide to produce foods on their own?A. Business.CCoke was introduced by the Coca Cola company in 1886, making it a rather true andtested favorite of generations of people in over 200 countries. This list should give you some ideas on how to get more from your coke than usual.. Coca Cola is an excellent rust buster (除锈剂). If you have a bunch of small rusty objects, put them in coke overnight and give them a goodscrubin the morning. Coke helps to break down the rust, making cleaning much easier. Be sure to throw out the used coke when you are done with it or you might be taking a trip to the doctor.. Like the previous item, the citric acid (柠檬酸) in coke makes for an excellent window cleaner. This is especially useful for car windows. Pour a can of coke over the window and rub the window, then wipe it off with awet cloth to remove any sugary matter from the sugar in the drink. As coke is fullof sugar, you should clean the sticky matter off the window glasses, or it will be not a cleaner but a dirt.. For those of you who live in areas where skunk (臭鼬) smells can be an issue from time to time, one can of coke added to water with detergent (清洁剂) really helps to break the smell down. If you have been sprayed, stand in the shower and cover yourself from head to toe with coke — wait for a few minutes, then wash yourself with a shower. Coke is an excellent hair treatment so you get two tips for the price of one with this item!. Pots can sometimes get black on the bottom. The black is almost impossible to remove; this is caused by over-cooking. To remove the black and renew your pot, pour in a can of coke (or as much as you need to cover the blackened area by an inch) and put it on the stove on a low heat. After an hour or so, wash the pot as normal.8. What does the underlined word “scrub”in Paragraph 2 probably mean?A. Start.B. Cleaning.C. Shake.D. Example.9. What is important while using coke to clean car windows?A. Use a dry cloth.B. Rub the window lightly.C. Don’t pour too much coke.D. Clean the sugary matter thoroughly.10. For which purpose does coke have to be mixed with other material?A. To get rid of the black on the pot.B. To breakdown the rust,C. To remove smells.D. To clean windows.11. What type of writing is this text?A. An advertisement.B. A review.C. A news report.D. A practical guide.DIn May this year, as part of our 150th anniversary, we asked readers aged between18 and 25 to enter an essay competition. The task was to tell us, in no more than 1,000 words, what scientific advance they would most like to see in their lifetimes, and why it mattered to them. The response was phenomenal: we received 661 entries. Some entrants hoped that science would make theirlifetimes much longer than they can currently expect. Many looked forward to work that will end climate change. Others wanted to see advances in our understanding of human history, crop growth, space exploration, and medical technologies. The ideas were inspiring. The winner is a compelling essay by Yasmin Ali, a PhD student at the University of Nottingham, UK. Ali submitted a piece on Beethoven, her brother’s hearing loss and the science which she hoped would one day cure it. It stood out to the judges as a reminder of why many scientists do research: to make the world better tomorrow than it is today. All essays were judged by a group of Nature editors. The top ten submissions were then ranked by three members of a separate judging group: Magdalena Skipper, editor-in-chief of Nature; Faith Osier, a researcher; and Jess Wade, a physicist. All submissions were kept anonymous throughout the process. We also selected two runners-up(非冠军的获奖者).Physicist Robert Schittkoat Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, proposes that nuclear fusion(核聚变) could offer a solution to the climate crisis, in a piece that effortlessly mixes grand ambition with gentle humour. And chemist Matthew Zajac at the University of Chicagoin Illinois wrote a powerful personal account of why he wants to see advances in the field of same-sex reproduction. The results show that today’s young scientists have a wealth of ideas, talent and conviction that research can transform their world. We look forward to seeing what they do next.12. What’s the essay competition about?A. The scientific expectation.B. The fantastic scientific ideas.C. The dreams of future life.D. The celebration of anniversary.13. Why Yasmin Ali was chosen the winner?A. She showed great talent in music.B. She found the cure for the loss of hearing.C. I’m not talking about the many professional athletes of today who have developed a me-first attitude. I am talking about high school sports, where lessons of life are still being learned. Here, athletes still compete for the love of the game and their teammates. Lisa Kincaid is one of them.I first met Lisa on the volleyball court. If anyone had a right to be cocky (自大的) or proud of herself, it was Lisa. Besides being one of the best volleyball players in the USA, she became a track legend (传奇人物). She went sixty-four national games without losing any event. However, she felt uncomfortable talking about her achievements and would usually change the conversation to others’ performances. She often lent her shoes to someone who’d forgotten her own, or sincerely sent best wishes to competitors from different teams.Soon after, Lisa’s impossible failure in one game impressed me a lot. Lisa’s coach told her he needed her to run the mile. She had never done so, but agreed to do what was best for the team. Lisa easily outdistanced the competition, but on the last lap she seemed to grow tired. Jane, Lisa’s teammate, passed her. Lisa managed to stay just behind Jane and followed her across the finish line. Lisa lost an event for the first time in her track career.Athletes in Lisa’s track program needed to earn a set amount of points to gain a varsity letter (校队标志徽章). Lisa knew that Jane needed to finish first to earn a letter for the first time. Without Lisa, Jane would make it. Lisa remembered all this as she lined up for the start of that race. It suddenly struck me why she wore a slight smile on her face after having “lost” for the first time ever. Jane finally received her first varsity letter. And Lisa? On that day, the day she lost, she earned my respect and admiration.4. Identical Twins Kathy and Sophie arrived at college last year and determined to strike out on independent paths, so they had requested rooms in different dorms. While Kathy got along with her roommate, Sophie was miserable. She and her roommate silently warred over matters ranging from when the lights should be turned off to how the furniture should be arranged. Finally, they divided the room in two and gave up on oral communication. During this time, Sophie kept seeking comfort from Kathy. Before long, the two wanted to live together again. Sophie’s roommate eventually agreed to move out.Sophie’s ability to solve her dilemma by rooming with her identical twin is unusual, but the conflict she faced is not. Most roommate conflicts spring from such small, annoying differences rather than from grand disagreements over abstract principles. One person likes quiet, while the other person spends two hours a day practicing the trumpet. One eats only organically(有机地) produced vegetables and loves animals, while the other likes wearing fur and enjoys cutting up frogs in biology class. When personalities don’t mix, the excitement of being away at college can quickly fade away. Moreover, roommates can affect each other’s psychological health. A recent study reports tha t depression in college roommates is often passed from one person to another. Many schools have started conflict resolution programs to calm tensions that otherwise can build up like a volcano preparing to explode, finally resulting in physical violence. Some colleges have resorted to “roommate contracts” that all new students fill out and sign after attending a lecture on roommate relations. Students detail behavioral guidelines for their room, including acceptable hours for study and sleep, a policy for use of each other’s possessions. Some schools try to head off the feud before it begins by using computerized matching. Students are put together on the basis of their responses to housing form questions.8. Why is the twins’ story mentioned?A.To describe college life.B.To reveal the relationship of the twins.C.To show the love between the sisters.D.To present the phenomenon of roommate conflicts.9. What is the cause of most conflicts among roommates?A.They have opposite mindsets. B.They argue over serious matters.C.They differ greatly in life values. D.They hold different preferences in someway.10. What does the underlined word “feud” in the last paragraph mean?A.Difference. B.Quarrel. C.Competition. D.Test.11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?A.Identical Twins Living Together Again in CollegesB.Roommate Conflicts, Common and Unavoidable?C.Roommate Contracts, Useful in Solving Conflicts?D.Roommate Conflicts Affecting Students’ PsychologyRegularly eating fish as a child can halve the risk of developing asthma (哮喘), as you get older, according to a team of scientists.Queen Mary University of London researchers studied data from more than 4,500 children born in the 1990s in the UK that have been monitored by scientists since birth. Those who consumed the most omega — 3 heavy fish were less likely to develop the life-threatening illness. In the UK young families that include children aged 5 to 11 consume the least amount of fish—with just 25 percent of homes having it at least twice a week. One-in-eleven youngsters — 1.1 million children — are receiving treatment for asthma and most adult cases begin in childhood, according to the researchers. Senior author Professor Seif Shaheen said, “Asthma is the most common chronic (慢性的) condition in childhood and we currently don’t know how to prevent it. It is possible a poor diet may increase the risk, but until now most studies have taken snapshots, measuring diet and asthma over a short period of time. Instead, we measured diet and then followed up children over many years to see who developed asthma and who didn’t.”The researchers found that those in the top quarter for fish consumption had a 51 percent lower risk of developing asthma than those who consume the least oily fish. Seafood is abundant in healthy omega —3 fatty acids. Oily varieties have the most. Shaheen added, “Whilst we cannot say for certain that eating more fish will prevent asthma in children, based on your findings, it would nevertheless be sensible fo r children in the UK to consume more fish.”The results were confirmed in an independent group of people born in Sweden. Shaheen’s team now plan to see if eating fish can help deal with asthma in people who already have the condition.12. What did the researchers find out about the UK young families?A.Most of them don’t eat much fish.B.Most of them have adult asthma cases.C.Most of them don’t consume healthy food.D.Most of them play down the seriousness of asthma.13. What did Shaheen think previous studies on asthma failed to do?A.Take diet into account. B.Involve enough participants.C.Analyze the reasons for asthma. D.Track participants for a long time. 14. What advice does Shaheen give?A.Use less oil to cook fish. B.Avoid omege—3 heavy food.C.Eat more fish to stay healthy. D.Try different types of seafood.15. What will Shaheen’s team do next?A.Find ways to deal with asthma. B.Study further to confirm their findings.C.Prove whether eating fish can treat asthma. D.Explain why eating fish can prevent asthma.“A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for,” said John A. Shedd, an early 20th century author. Throughout the Covid-19, we’ve all become used to assessing risk in new ways. We’ve come to understand, though we can never get rid of risk altogether, we have great power to make choices both large and small to protect ourselves. 16 It stops us from stepping outside of our comfort zones and trying new things.Developmental psychologists talk about “positive risks” — socially acceptable risks that our lives can benefit from. 17 But what about these, who develop into adults? Researchers have found that happiness for older adults is being able to choose how they spend their time, including ways that are adventurous, new and even-like hiking or other outdoor activities — mildly risky. One guide to positive risk management lists ways that people can make sure their risks are on the “safe" side of risk range. For example, to ensure a successful bike ride, you should in advan ce equip yourself with a fully-charged cell phone and a full water bottle. 18 Or if you are, concerned about your physical capacity, consult a certified trainer or medical professional before departure.19 This means adapting to changing situations. In response to the deadly virus, people choose to step back into normal life only after they are vaccinated. In this way, people could be confident that the risk is tolerable.Nobody wants to be needlessly risky. But using our newly-acquired risk assessment tools, we can once again learn and grow in our lives. 20A lottery (彩票) winner in Kentucky won a six-figure jackpot (头奖). Social media platforms have become an integral part of daily life, allowing individuals to connect with others across the globe. However, this shift in communication has raised concerns about the impact on face-to-face interactions and the potential loss of traditional social skills. One of the most popular social media platforms is Instagram, which is known for its focus on visual content. Users can share photos, videos, and stories, and follow others who share similar interests. While Instagram can be a great way to stay connected with friends and discover new things, it also has its downsides.A recent study found that excessive use of Instagram can lead to feelings of loneliness and depression. The constant comparison with others’ seemingly perfect lives can create a sense of inadequacy. Additionally, the platform’s algorithm can create a filter bubble, where users are only exposed to content that aligns with their existing beliefs and interests, thus limiting their exposure to diverse perspectives.Despite these concerns, many people find Instagram to be a valuable tool for networking and personal growth. It can provide a platform for artists, writers, and entrepreneurs to showcase their work and connect with potential audiences. Moreover, it can be a source of inspiration and motivation, as users are exposed to the achievements and stories of others.Questions:1、What is the main topic of the passage?A) The benefits of using social media platforms.B) The negative effects of Instagram on social interactions.C) The history of social media platforms.D) The role of technology in modern communication.2、Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a potential negative effect of using Instagram?A) Feelings of inadequacy.B) Limited exposure to diverse perspectives.C) Improved communication skills.D) Increased feelings of loneliness and depression.3、What is the author’s attitude towards Instagram?A) Highly critical.B) Indifferent.C) Positive and supportive.D) Ambiguous.Answers:1、B) The negative effects of Instagram on social interactions.2、C) Improved communication skills.3、D) Ambiguous.第三题Reading Passage:In the small town of Greenfield, there was a long-standing tradition of the annual Greenfield Festival. This shift is primarily due to the convenience and flexibility it offers to students. Online courses allow individuals to learn at their own pace, from any location, and often at a lower cost compared to traditional in-person classes. However, despite these advantages, online learning also comes with its own set of challenges. One of the main concerns is the potential for reduced social interaction. monitoring Selection. Our Investment Review Committee (IRC), comprising Directors of Research and senior sector analysts, works with our analysts to source Conviction Calls and keep them timely and relevant. The aim of Conviction Calls is to identify the stocks we believe offerthe best alpha generation potential by capitalizing on short-term catalysts or long-term fundamental opportunities. The 73 and 29 stocks on the AEJ CL and Japan CL, respectively, therefore represent the best current alpha generation opportunities in our 776 and 254 stock coverage universe. We classify Conviction Calls as: (1) structural change – when we expect CROCI to improve relative to the sector; and (2) mean reversion – when we see a valuation anomaly although we do not expect company operations to change materially.Monitoring. We segment our coverage universe into appropriate sub-sectors and measure Conviction Call performance relative to the sub-sector on a total return, equal weight, local currency, and daily rebalance methodology. We use an equal-weighted basis to keep the focus on idea generation, which means the resulting Conviction List is unencumbered by attempts to call the market or relative performance of sectors, and does not try to adjust for size and liquidity. The returns of individual ideas are calculated using the first closing price post publication of the idea and the first closing price post publication of the idea’s expiry. Performance calculations assume closing levels with no bid/ask spread and no commission. We regularly review each Conviction Call to check the validity of our rating. If a Conviction Call reaches our target price or moves against our rating, we consider whether to keep it or to remove it to realize gains or limit losses.AEJ Conviction List: Share price performance summaryJapan Conviction List: Share price performance summaryAEJ Conviction List: Valuation, returns, GS EPS vs. consensusJapan Conviction List: Valuation, returns, GS EPS vs. consensusDirector of Research (DOR) Asia Focus ListOur DOR Asia Focus List was launched on October 19, 2009 and currently consists of 15 stocks representing our analysts’ AEJ and Japan CL ideas that research management find most attractive on a range of qualitative and quantitative factors. The four key attributes depicted are: growth, returns, multiple and volatility. Growth, returns and multiple are indexed based on composites of several methodologies to determine the stocks percentile ranking within the region's coverage universe. The precise calculation of each metric may vary depending on the fiscal year, industry and region but the standard approach is as follows:Growth is a composite of next year's estimate over current year's estimate, e.g. EPS, EBITDA, Revenue. Return is a year one prospective aggregate of various return on capital measures, e.g. CROCI, ROACE, and ROE. Multiple is a composite of one-year forward valuation ratios, e.g. P/E, dividend yield, EV/FCF, EV/EBITDA, EV/DACF, Price/Book. Volatility is measured as trailing twelve-month volatility adjusted for dividends. QuantumQuantum is Goldman Sachs' proprietary database providing access to detailed financial statement histories, forecasts and ratios. It can be used for in-depth analysis of a single company, or to make comparisons between companies in different sectors and markets.GS SUSTAINGS SUSTAIN is a global investment strategy aimed at long-term, long-only performance with a low turnover of ideas.
