1.交友
交友是全人类共同的话题, 但不同的民族、不同的文化所持的交
友观却存在差异。此外 ,人与人之间 的父友观也有 所不同。不过
“患难见真交” ( A friend in need is a friend indeed) 却是世界各民族
所公认的 。
俗话说“物以类聚,人以群分” ,只有兴趣相投的人才能成为朋友。
西方社会也是如此。 在西方,朋友间相处应是互相尊重,互相帮助,以
诚相待。即便是朋友,他们也不随意询问对方隐私, 更不干涉对方的私
事。西方人一般认为 ,两个人通过某种场合相识了,之后见过几次面,
谈话投缘,就是朋友了。此外,西方的交友观还认为朋友之间无需过分
苛求,不一定非要彼此之间志同道合。值得指出的是, 在西方,人们也
会因所受教育、所处社会群体,以及个人观念及爱好的差异对择友的
标准持有不同观点及看法, 本单元Section B 课文就给我们作了很好
的陈述。
2.语言中对人体部位引申表述的文化现象
世界各国语言均有将人体某些器官及部位进行引申 ,用来表达
情感、 需求等深层含义的现象。以汉语为例,我们说“丢脸”表示“有失
面子”;“肚子叫唤”表示“饥饿”; “脚底抹油”表示 “溜之大吉; 跑得
快” 。再如“心狠手辣”表示 “阴险恶毒” ,是贬义;而 “心直口快” 是说
一个人“直率; 直言不讳”, 为褒义。如此等等,不胜枚举。
英语也是一样,可以举出很多类似的例子。但由于文化及意识形

态上的差异,不同人体器官部位所表达的含义与汉语并不完全相同。
这些值得我们在教授及学习外语时多加注意。本单元 A true friend
reaches for your hand and touches your heart.一句中的 hand 和 heart
就属此类用法——在此 hand 已经超越了“手”、 heart也不再是“心
脏” 的意思,而分别引申为“帮助; 援手”和“情感; 心灵”之意。在日 常
对话交流中, Can you give me a hand? 意在表达 I need your help、 而
并非真要你把“手”伸出来给 “我”。再以 heart为例,It does my heart
good to see him improve so quickly•是在表达 I’m very happy to find
he’s made such rapid process •之意。
当然,英语中这样的表述绝不仅限于 hand 和 heart,其他器官所构
成的表述也为数不少,如don’t see eye to eye with somebody表示“不赞
同某人; 与人家持不同的观点 ” , have a big mouth 表不“好传话; 爱
到处嚷嚷” , laugh from ear to ear 表示 “开怀大笑; 笑得合不拢嘴巴”
等等。此类表述有的易于理解, 但也有的限于文化等障碍不那么容易
理解,甚至可能引起误会, 影响正常交流。教师不仅自己需要注意,还
应告诫学生, 遇到这类与人体部位相关的表述时切莫想当然地推测
臆断,找一两本权威的词典查看一番再下结论不迟。
