might not be enough.A new study from the University of Essex in Britain has shown that the more friends you have in school, the more money you’ll earn later. The idea that popularity could have a serious influence on one’s earning potential shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. The researchers noted that if you want to get ahead in life, social skills and networking are easily as powerful as talent and hard work.“If a person has lots of friends,it means that he or she has the ability to get along with others in all kinds of different situations,” said Xu Yanchun,17,from Nantou High School in Shenzhen, who totally agreed with the recent finding.“Also, friends always help each other. They not only create wider social circles for you but lift your mood when you are occasionally in low spirits,”said Xu.She believed that all this helps you “earn a higher salary”.Maybe that’s why some people think the younger generations are in the age of Friendaholism (交友狂症)?A woman even complained that the networking website Fac ebook’s 5,000-friend limit was too low for her large reserve of social contacts. But what does a friend mean?Should friends be regarded as a form of currency?“Call me uncool, but I think of a friend as an actual person with whom I have an actual history and whom I enjoy actually seeing. It seems, however, that this is no longer the definition of a friend,” said Meghan Daum, who works with the Los Angeles Times in the US.Daum dislikes the idea that quantity trumps quality in the age of Friendaholism. She thought the idea of friendship,at least among the growing population of Internet social networkers, was to get as many of not-really-friends as possible. For example,a friend might be someone you might know personally but who could just as easily be the friend of a friend of some other Facebook friend you don’t actually know.Although she agreed that social ties grease (润滑) the wheels of life, she also warned,“Too bad one thing money can’t buy is a real friend.”1.What can friends do in the eyes of Xu Yanchun?A.They can help you with your schoolwork.B.They teach you how to make more money.C.They help you to get rid of sadness and cheer up.D.They introduce their friends to you.2.What will be needed if you are to achieve success according to the researchers?A.Social skills, friends, good mood and fortune.B.Social skills, networking, talent and hard work.C.Social skills, networking, potential and fortune.D.Social skills, talent, hard work and Facebook.3.We learn that Meghan Daum’s attitude towards friends is somewhat________.A.up-to-date B.optimisticC.confused D.traditional4.What does the word “trumps” in the last paragraph mean?A.is better than B.is equal toC.is worse than D.is similar toⅢ.七选五(2011·吉林省实验中学高三第二次模拟考试) May the first is which TV may be to blame is a question that the study leaves unanswered. The researchers used a national long-term survey of adolescent health to investigate the relationship between media use and depression. They based their findings on more than 4,000 adolescents who were not depressed when the survey began in 1995.As part of the survey, the young people were asked how many hours of television or videos they watched daily. They were also asked how often they played computer games and listened to the radio.Media use totaled an average of 5 and one-half hours a day.More than 2 hours of that was spent watching TV.7 years later,in 2002,more than 7 percent of the young people had signs of depression. The average age at that time was 21.Brian Primack at the University of Pittsburgh medical school was the lead author of the new study. He says every extra hour of television meant an 8 percent increase in the chances of developing signs of depression. The researchers say they did not find any such relationship with the use of other media such as movies, video games or radio. But the study did find that young men were more likely than young women to develop depression given the same amount of media use.Doctor Primack says the study did not explore why watching TV causes depression. But one possibility,he says,is that it may take time away from activities that could help prevent depression, like sports and socializing. It might also interfere with sleep,he says, and that could have an influence. The study was just published in the Archives of General Psychiatry. In December, the journal Social Indicators Research published a study of activities that help lead to happy lives.Sociologists from the University of Maryland found that people who describe themselves as happy spend less time watching television than unhappy people. The study found that happy people are more likely to be socially active,to read, attend religious services and to vote.1.According to the first paragraph, what remains unsolved in the new study?A.Who is more likely to be influenced by TV.B.How much teenagers are depressed by TV.C.Whether teenagers are influenced by TV.D.What should be done to help the teenagers.2.More than 4,000 adolescents were chosen as the subjects of the study because they________.A.were free from depressionB.were keen on using the mediaC.attached much importance to their healthD.could afford the time for the long-term survey3.What can be inferred from the seventh paragraph?A.Depression is not related to the use of other media than TV.B.Every extra hour of media uses increases the chance of depression.C.Longer use of media other than TV doesn’t increase the chance of depression.D.The influence of movies, video games and radio on depression varies respectively.4.In the last sentence of the eighth paragraph,“It” refers to________.A.depression B.watching TVC.lack of activities D.the result of the study5.The study done by the sociologists from the University of Maryland was mainly intended to ________.A.tell the difference between happy and unhappy peopleB.prove the relationship between TV and depressionC.stress the importance of being socially activeD.provide a happy recipe (秘方) for all peopleⅢ.七选五(山西大学附中2010~2011学年第一学期高三月考) Psychologists tell us that there are four basic stages that human beings pass through when they enter and live in a
