Cheaper goods Export increased
Result: England’s trade balance would deteriorate, while
France’s trade balance would improve.

Long-run surplus is impossible. Fundamental weakness: Trade is seen as a zero-sum game (a gain by one country results in a loss by another)
1.
2.
1. Diminishing Returns

Assumption of constant returns to specialization: the units of resources required to produce a good are assumed to remain constant no matter where one is on a country’s PPF Reality: Diminishing returns to specialization – output increase leads to increased consumption of resource Reasons: unequal quality of resources different proportion of resources for different products

Adam Smith (1776) attacked mercantilism: Countries differ in their ability to produce goods efficiently. Thus, a country has an absolute advantage in the production of a product when it is more efficient than any other country in producing it. Countries should specialize in the production of goods for which they have an AA, then trade these goods for the goods produced by other countries. Both countries benefit from international trade (a positive-sum game). Adam Smith advocated: specialization & free trade

TEXT I
You are to watch an interview with Thomas van der Kallen, the CEO of Ebel, a luxury watch maker. Fill in the missing words. For the very rich, an expensive watch is as much to indicate status as it is to tell the time, and despite the current economic climate, competition in the industry is as fierce as ever with image being the buzz word of the hour. It is also very much about building the image . Today we are not in the business of selling watches. We are in the business of building and selling an image . And that is why we work with Ebel, only the best to really connect with our customers out there.
