托福阅读原文In 1970 geologists Kenneth J.Hsu and William B.F. Ryan were collecting research data while aboard the oceanographicresearch vessel Glomar Challenger.Anobjective of this particular cruise wasto investigate the floor of theMediterranean and to resolve questions aboutits geologic history. One questionwas related to evidence that theinvertebrate fauna (animals without spines) ofthe Mediterranean had changedabruptly about 6 million years ago. Most of theolder organisms were nearlywiped out, although a few hardy species survived. Afew managed to migrate into the Atlantic.Somewhat later, the migrants returned, bringing new species with them. Why didthe near extinction and migrationsoccur?Another task for the GlomarChallenger’sscientists was to try to determine the origin of the domelikemasses buried deepbeneath the Mediterranean seafloor. These structures had beendetected yearsearlier by echo-sounding instruments, but they had never beenpenetrated in thecourse of drilling. Were they salt domes such as are commonalong the UnitedStates Gulf Coast, and if so, why should there have been somuch solidcrystalline salt beneath the floor of the Mediterranean? With question such as these clearly beforethem, thescientists aboard the Glomar Challenger processed to the Mediterraneantosearch for the answers. On August 23, 1970,they recovered a sample. Thesampleconsisted of pebbles of hardened sediment that had once been soft,deep-seamud, as well as granules of gypsum and fragments of volcanic rock. Nota singlepebble was found that might have indicated that the pebbles came fromthenearby continent. In the days following, samples of solid gypsumwererepeatedly brought on deck as drilling operations penetrated theseafloor.Furthermore, the gypsum was found to possess peculiarities ofcomposition andstructure that suggested it had formed on desert flats. Sedimentabove andbelow the gypsum layer contained tiny marine fossils, indicatingopen-oceanconditions. As they drilled into the central and deepest part oftheMediterranean basin, the scientists took solid, shiny, crystalline saltfromthe core barrel. Interbedded with the salt were thin layers of whatappeared tobe windblown silt. The time had come to formulate ahypothesis. The investigators theorized that about 20 million years ago, theMediterranean wasa broad seaway linked to the Atlantic by two narrow straits.Crustal movements closedthe straits, and the landlocked Mediterranean began toevaporate. Increasingsalinity caused by the evaporation resulted in theextermination of scores ofinvertebrate species. Only a few organisms especiallytolerant of very saltyconditions remained. As evaporation continued, the remainingbrine (salt water)became so dense that the calcium sulfate of the hard layerwas precipitated. Inthe central deeper part of the basin, the last of the brineevaporated toprecipitate more soluble sodium chloride (salt). Later, under theweight ofoverlying sediments, this salt flowed plastically upward to form saltdomes. Before this happened, however, the Mediterranean was a vast desert 3,000metersdeep. Then, about 5.5 million yearsago came the deluge. As a result ofcrustaladjustments and faulting, the Strait of Gibraltar, where theMediterranean nowconnects to the Atlantic, opened, and water cascadedspectacularly back intothe Mediterranean.Turbulent waters tore into thehardened salt flats, brokethem up, and ground them into the pebbles observed inthe first sample taken bythe Challenger. As the basin was refilled, normalmarine organisms returned.Soon layer of oceanic ooze began to accumulate abovethe old hard layer.Thesalt and gypsum, the faunal changes, and the unusualgravel provided abundantevidence that the Mediterranean was once a desert.托福阅读试题1.The word “objective”in the passage(paragraph 1) is closest in meaning toA.achievementB.requirementC.purposeD.feature2.Which of the following is NOT mentionedin paragraph 1 asa change thatoccurred in the fauna of the Mediterranean?A.Most invertebrate species disappearedduring a wave of extinctions.B.A few hardy species wiped out many of theMediterranean’s i nvertebrates.C.Some invertebrates migrated to AtlanticOcean.D.New species of fauna populated theMediterranean when the old migrants returned.3.1.Whatdoes the author imply by saying“Not a single pebble was found that might have indicated that thepebbles came from the nearby continent”?(paragraph 3)A.The most obvious explanation for theorigin of the pebbles was not supported by the evidence.B.The geologists did not find as manypebbles as they expected.C.The geologists were looking for aparticular kind of pebble.D.The different pebbles could not have comefrom only one source.4.Which of the following can be inferredfrom paragraph 3 about the solidgypsum layer?A.It did not contain any marine fossil.B.It had formed in open-ocean conditions.C.It had once been soft, deep-sea mud.D.It contained sediment from nearbydeserts.5.Select the TWO answer choice from paragraph3 that identify materialsdiscovered in the deepest part of the Mediterraneanbasin. ARTICLE
he Yellow River (Fig. 1) currently has the world’s highest sediment load1, with an annual sediment discharge of 1,080 Â 106 ton per year to the ocean. It is therefore a critical link between eroding uplands and terrigenous sediment records of the marine sedimentary basins used extensively to reconstruct orogenic denudation histories2–4. The river’s sediment sources, transport and dispersal patterns, as well as its formation history5–8, are key for understanding the controversial timing, cause, extent and impact of uplift and denudation of the Northeast (NE) Tibetan Plateau and tectonic–climate linkages3,9,10. However, the origin and drainage history of the river are highly controversial, with estimates of establishment of the current drainage patterns ranging from the Eocene to late Pleistocene6,8,11. Furthermore, the globally important climate and dust archive, the Chinese Loess Plateau loess deposits that lie within the square bend of the Yellow River (Fig. 1), are widely considered to be derived solely from aeolian transport of dust directly from source regions in NE Tibet, western China or northern China and Mongolia12–20. The Yellow River is considered to be a net remover of sediment from the Loess Plateau21–23. However, a recent study24 suggests that the Yellow River has provided sediment to the Loess Plateau during the last glacial period, casting doubt on the origins of this climate and atmospheric dust archive. Key to unravelling these questions is constraining the river’s past and present sediment sources and dispersal patterns. Here we constrain these sources and dispersal patterns using the first extensive modern and paleo-river sediment provenance data set based on combined detrital zircon U–Pb dating, heavy mineral and framework petrography. The results show that the Loess Plateau is a major terrestrial sink for Yellow River sediment eroded from the NE Tibetan Plateau.

大禹治水的英语

大禹治水的英语The Great Yu's Efforts in Flood ControlIn the annals of ancient Chinese history, the legendary figure of the Great Yu stands out as a revered hero, whose unwavering dedication and ingenious efforts in flood control have left an indeluring mark on the nation's collective consciousness. The story of the Great Yu's triumph over the devastating floods that once plagued the land serves as a testament to the power of human perseverance and the transformative impact of visionary leadership. The era in which the Great Yu lived was marked by a series of catastrophic floods that threatened the very existence of the nascent Chinese civilization. The mighty rivers that had once nourished the land had become raging torrents, sweeping away homes, crops, and lives in their wake. The people lived in constant fear, their livelihoods and very survival hanging in the balance. It was during this tumultuous time that the Great Yu emerged as a beacon of hope. Recognized for his exceptional problem-solving skills and his unwavering commitment to the welfare of his people, he was entrusted with the daunting task of taming the unruly watersthat had plagued the land for generations.Undaunted by the magnitude of the challenge, the Great Yu set out on a journey that would test the limits of human endurance and ingenuity. He traveled extensively throughout the affected regions, meticulously studying the patterns and behavior of the floodwaters. With a keen eye for detail and a deep understanding of the natural world, he devised a comprehensive plan to control the floods and restore the land to its former prosperity. At the heart of the Great Yu's strategy was a profound respect for the delicate balance of nature. Rather than attempting to conquer the waters through brute force, he recognized the importance of working in harmony with the natural environment. He employed a combination of innovative engineering techniques and strategic water management practices to tame the raging rivers and redirect the flow of the floodwaters. One of the Great Yu's most remarkable achievements was the construction of a vast network of canals, dikes, and dams that channeled the excess water into designated areas, preventing it from wreaking havoc on the populated regions. This intricate system of water management not only protected the people from the devastating effects of the floods but also ensured the efficient distribution of water resources for agricultural and domestic use. Moreover, the Great Yu's efforts extended beyond the physical infrastructure. He understood that the long-term success of his flood control measures depended on the active participation and cooperation of the people. He worked tirelessly to educate the populace on the importance of water conservation and the proper maintenance of the flood control systems. Through his tireless efforts, he fostered a sense of collective responsibility and community ownership, ensuring that the people would continue to safeguard the land long after his own lifetime. The legacy of the Great Yu's flood control efforts can still be felt today. The systems he put in place not only protected the land from the devastating effects of floods but also laid the foundation for the agricultural and economic prosperity that would come to define ancient Chinese civilization. His innovative approach to water management and his unwavering commitment to the well-being of his people have earned him a revered place in the annals of history, inspiring generations of leaders and engineers to follow in his footsteps. As we grapple with the challenges of modern-day environmental and climate-related disasters, the story of the Great Yu serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of visionary leadership and the importance of working in harmony with thenatural world. His legacy continues to inspire us to seek innovative solutions to the complex problems we face, and to never underestimate the impact that a single individual can have on the course of history.。

In the background of these aspects and the observed anomalous Ni and Co values in the komatiite-bearing areas, a detailed geochemical sampling, besides critical stratigraphic evaluation, including volcanic stratigrapy in the J. C. Pura schist belt is called for. Magnesia-rich high-temperature komatiite sequences in the J. C. Pura schist belt appear to be enriched in Ni–Co metals. Hence, it is worthwhile to make a detailed study of the geochemical signatures of komatiite rocks, their metamorphism and structural deformation and their role in the possible Ni–Co sulphide ore mineralization, as adopted for many new prospects near Kambalda in West-ern Australia and Raglan in Quebec, Canada to explore potential zones. It may also be necessary to investigate the geomorphological evolution of the belt to ascertain the possible spatial extent and degree of in situ weather-ing, which are important for Ni and Co concentration by lateritic processes. Though Ni prices have indicated fluc-tuations (US$ 24/pound in 2007 to US$ 8.2/pound at pre-sent) in the international market, they are unlikely to fall below US$ 5/pound8. This can still afford profitable min-

ing of ore with ~0.9% Ni and 0.074% Co, as has been shown for the Mindoro deposit in the Philippines. With no productive deposits in India, and in view of the strategic importance of Ni and Co, it is necessary to make an inven-tory of the Ni–Co prospects in the J. C. Pura schist belt.

Evidence of a late-medieval mega flood event in the upper reaches of the Mahi River basin, Gujarat

Alpa Sridhar Department of Geology, Faculty of Science, The M.S. University of Baroda, Vadodara 390 008, India

Palaeoflood records are of great significance in reveal-ing the magnitude and frequency of large floods and thus the past monsoon conditions. The Mahi River, one of the major west-flowing rivers of India con-trolled by the southwest monsoon has preserved deposits of past floods dating back to 5 ka. A flood de-posit emplaced by a mega flood event with discharge ~7300 m3s–1 has been found at Diapattan in the upper reaches of the Mahi River basin. Based on the pottery available at the site, the event can be said to belong to late-medieval time. The timing of this mega flood event recorded at Diapattan in the Mahi River basin and records of the adjacent river basins suggest that this event represents the strengthened monsoon dur-ing the Medieval Warm Period (900–1400 AD). There exists a correlation between the extreme hydrological events in the Mahi, Narmada and Tapi river basins and this can be attributed to a regional monsoon domain.
