The Plight of Chinese Semi-Colonial, Semi-Feudal PeriodWhen it comes to the plight of Chinese semi-colonial, semi-feudal, it stirs my thirst for say something about this period. As we all know, China was reduced to a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society on account of the invasion by imperialist powers. All the Chinese people suffered from great disasters in that period of time. However, with the supporting of the national spirits, year in and year out, our forbear did not give up the conflict. Now I’d like to introduce the plight of this period at different stages.After British started the Opium War in 1840, the imperial powers descended on China like a swarm of bees, looting our treasures and killing our people. They forced the Qing government to sign a serious of unequal treaties that granted them economic, political and cultural privileges and sank China gradually into a semi-colonial, semi-feudal society. At the same time, through the unequal treaties, our country lost lots of lands. All of nation, especially our pitiful fellow countrymen lived a great hard life. The contradiction between imperialism and the Chinese nation and between feudalism and the broad masses of the people became the primary contradictions in modern Chinese society. And some people with lofty ideals realized that the country was in a danger and they should take actions to do the struggle and the awakening of the Chinese people. In order to safeguard the country's sovereignty and defend the nation's dignity, the Chinese people unflinchingly attacked the foreign invaders, foiling the imperialist powers' plot to subjugate China. The national crisis and the people's misery constantly deepened which spurred Chinese people of insight to ponder the nation's future and the country's fate and search for a path to salvation.In order to protect the country from aggression, Chinese earlyattempted to find a way out for the country. Faced with national crisis and social conflicts of an unprecedented severity, all strata of Chinese society, including the peasantry, feudal ruling class and the capitalist, began to explore the out way of our nation and country. For example, Taiping Rebellion was the peasant movement which was fight against the Qing government and the foreign invaders. But leader of the Taiping Army could not break away from the feudal thought so that they could n’t make it. At this time, feudal ruling class and capitalist also searched for different ways to protect their own interests. So they also would not keep Chinese from danger.Faced with the plight, revolution was the best choice to change the terrible situation. Different from other efforts, the bourgeois revolutionary faction led by Sun Yat-sen realized that revolution is the only way out for China. The bourgeois revolutionaries raised the flag of national democratic revolution, launched an armed uprising and drew up a plan to establish a bourgeois republic. They overthrew the Qing Dynasty, putting an end to more than two thousand years of feudal monarchy, and established the first bourgeois republic in China's history. This was the first massive change China underwent in the 20th century.However, with the support of imperialism and domestic reactionary forces, the leader of the northern warlords, Yuan Shikai, stole the victory of the revolution of 1911, the bourgeois revolutionists tried to save the republic but failed over and over again. At that time, the bourgeois revolutionaries was unable to complete the basic task of the anti-imperialist and anti-feudal, so the revolution of 1911didn't change China's social properties. Since then, the new culture movement began to rise. The imperialist powers invasion shattered China's dream of learning from the West. The October Revolution in Russia sent Marxism to China and caused progressive Chinese to turn their attention from the West to the East, and from bourgeois democracy to socialism. The May 4thMovement furthered the spread of Marxism, and the working class appeared on the stage of history as an independent political force. The integration of Marxism with the worker's movement gave birth to the CPC. The founding of the CPC was an earth-shattering event that brought new vitality to the Chinese revolution.The CPC searched for a new path for the Chinese revolution. After its founding, the CPC relied on and mobilized worker and peasants, cooperated with the KMT, carried out the Northern Expedition against the Northern warlords, and brought about an upsurge in the Great Revolution. Chiang Kai-shek and other KMT Rightists betrayed the revolution and the revolution failed at last. With the lead of MAO zedong, the Chinese communists opened a new way which was called "Encircle the cities from the rural areas".The tower of strength in the people's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. In the 1930s, the Japanese imperialist launched a war of invasion to subjugate China. Take Nanjing Massacre as an example, On December 13, 1937, Nanjing was under the occupation of the Japanese Army. With the approach of the Japanese troops, the capital Nanjing was threatened with a catastrophe. Citizens of Nanjing as well as foreign residents were leaving in a hurry. During that particular period, 25 refugee camps were set up in that zone. At the maximum, they accommodated as many as 250,000 refugees. On December 13, 1937, Nanjing was sacked. In the following six weeks, the Japanese Army committed extremely horrible crimes, murdering innocent people. In Nanjing more than 300,000 innocent citizens and unarmed soldiers were slaughtered. The ancient capital Nanjing suffered an unprecedented catastrophe and was turned into a living hell. With the nation in dire peril, the CPC proposed the formation of an anti-Japanese national united front based on cooperation between the CPC and KMT, and the CPC became nation's tower of strength in the war of resistance. After 14 years bloodywar, the Chinese people won their first complete victory in resisting and repelling the invasion of a foreign enemy in the modern history.After the anti-Japanese war, China was faced with the historic decision of what course to take. The KMT faction under Chiang Kai-Shek adhered to its reactionary policy of autocratic rule and civil war, and the CPC carried out a positive struggle for peace and democracy. After full-scale civil war broke out, the CPC led the people of the whole country in a revolutionary war against the counterrevolutionary forces and overthrew the reactionary KMT rule, winning the great victory of the new-democratic revolution.From the foregoing, we can draw a conclusion that lagging behind leaves one vulnerable to attacks, which is the never-forgotten lesson the Chinese people have learnt from their tragic experience of repeated foreign invasions. So we should take our responsibility to make our country become stronger and stronger.。
