ALuo Jingyu,19, has four years of experience of running business. He is also a freshman in the arts department of Hubei University.Luo Jingyu is from an ordinary family. He said, “My parents told me if I wanted something Ishould make an effort to get it, so I earned pocket money by doing housework when I was little.” The dream of running his own business grew in his heart. He said, “I want to be a successful person, like Alibaba’s Ma Yun.”When Luo was a junior student, he had the idea of selling lanterns when he saw many people flying Chinese lanterns in a square. Luo bought some lanterns from a store, but the sales were not as good as he had expected. Then he found another way to do business. He bought lanterns on the Internet at a very low price. Finally he easily made 5,000 yuan in two days. With a happy beginning, Luo planned to open a dress shop. “My parents didn’t support me opening a dress shop, so I had to borrow 120,000 yuan for it.” Although he did market research before starting, the business wasn’t very good because his taste in fashion wasn’t accepted by customers. The shop eventuall y closed down after half a year. After experiencing a big loss, he decided to do something he was familiar with—selling painting tools. As a fine arts student, he knew the market. He convinced his friends to invest one million yuan in his shop. With a good business mind and a lot of effort, the sales of the shop reached six million yuan in a year.Even though Luo is rich, he uses a cheap cell phone and does not wear luxury clothes. He has a simple lifestyle. “It isn’t easy to make money, so money should be used on something worthwhile,” he said.1. We can learn from the second paragraph that Luo’s parents____.A. asked him for money to pay the rentB. suggested that he work hard to get somethingC. advise him to pay more attention to his studiesD. gave him some money to do business2. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Luo learnt to make lanterns from his father.B. Luo’s friends advised him to sell painting tools.C. Luo borrowed money from the bank to open shops.D. The loss at the dress shop taught Luo a lesson.3.Which of the following words can describe Luo best?____.A. Talented but lazy.B. Rich but mean.C. Hard-working and plain-living.D. Optimistic and kind.BA newspaper reporter’s job can be very interesting. He meet s all types of people and lives quite a busy life. He is on the rush for news all the time, then after several years he may get a desk job, and life becomes a bit more settled. Let’s look at his work a little more closely. In a day he may have to interview the prime minister of a foreign country, and the next day he may be writing about a football match. Sometimes he may be so busy that he has hardly any time to sleep. And at other times he may go on for days looking out for news materials yet return empty-handed.In the beginning, a reporter has to cover a very wide field. After the early years he becomes more specialized in his work. For example, he may finally be asked to write only on court cases or politics or sports. Some reporters may become so specialized that they are asked only to write on a special thing: horse racing, for example. In most newspaper houses there is at least one special racing correspondent. Some newspapers have book reviews. Their job is delightful. They read the latest book and then write reviews on the ones they like. Then there are those who write on films, so they get to see them even before they are shown in the cinema. How lucky, you would say!A reporter’s job can also be very dangerous. A number of them have died rushing fro m one assignment to another, and if there is a flood or a riot(暴乱) they may get hurt or even be killed. Three years ago there was a reporter whose camera was smashed by a group of men, because they were angry with him for taking their picture. Dangerous or not, one thing is certain, and that is, their job is never dull!4. What does the underlined phrase “on the rush” mean in the passage?A. on the beachB. on the spotC. in a hurryD. in no time5. Reporters who write on films are said to be lucky because they _____.A. can see the films before most people see them in the cinemaB. can see more film starsC. can pay less than other peopleD. can write anything they like6. A reporter’s work becomes dangero us when _____.A. there is an interview with the prime ministerB. there is a flood or a riotC. there is a football matchD. he is seeing a horror film7. From the passage we can infer that, to be a good reporter, he must be all of the followingEXCEPT_____________.A. braveB. quick in mindC. well-informed (博识的)D. strongCHere’s this week’s list of four open jobs throughout the local area. David Lewis, chairman of Mindlab International, told The Telegraph, "Music is a very powerful management tool if you want to increase not only the efficiency of your workforce but also their emotional state... they are going to become more positive about the work."However, you may have a list of your favorite songs, but not all kinds of music match all homework. For maths or other subjects involving numbers or attention to detail, you should listen to classical music, the study found. In the study, pop music enabled participants to complete their tasks 58% faster than when listening to no music at all. If you are reviewing your English writing, pop music is the best choice, as it is the best kind for spell checking. It cut mistakes by 14%, compared to listening to no music. But conservation (保护) of the African elephant still faces special difficulties. While the elephant population is half of what it was 40 years ago, some ar eas of Africa have more elephants than populated areas can support. That’s why AWF scientists are studying elephant behavior, protecting habitats and finding ways for humans to live peacefully with elephants in Africa.Years ago, overhunting and the ivory trade were the biggest threats to elephants’survival. Luckily, ivory bans (禁令), hunting rules and protected areas protect elephants from these dangers today. The 21st century brings a different challenge to elephant conservation —land-use. Elephants walk across borders and outside parks and other protected areas. So they often destroy crops, causing conflicts (冲突) between local farmers and these big animals.Successful conservation strategies (策略) must allow elephants to walk freely in their natural habitats while reducing conflicts between elephants and local people.AWF researchers are searching for a way to give both elephants and people the space they need. The AWF is collecting information on elephant habitats and behavior. The information they gather will help to develop the widest possible space for elephants. The AWF is helping elephants by protecting their habitats And they also work with local famers to improve their life in order to encourage them to protect rather than destroy elephants. 12. I still remember the day in high school that my mom forgot to pick me up from school. I’m the oldest of four children, and no doubt she’d had a long day with the other kids and it had slipped her mind. After waiting at school for an hour, I walked the three miles home, and when I got to my house, I shut our front door with anger, stormed into the kitchen and screamed in my mom’s face that she'd forgotten me.Later that night, my dad told me I no longer had a ride to school the next day. I figured my mom would still take me, but when the morning came, she refused. It was midterm, and as a straight A student ready to start college applications, being late wasn't an option. In my mind, missing these tests would have been the end of my academic career. I begged my mom, I told her she was running my future and everything I worked for. But she held her ground, and that day, I walked to school. And I missed my tests. My mom didn’t rescue me from failure. She let me suffer from it. She let me figure it out. She let me learn. Now, as a mom myself, I’ve realized that I want my kids to experience failure because failure is how we grow, learn and think outside of ourselves. It’s how we self-educate to learn what’s right and respectable, and what’s not. It’s how we become responsible and enthusiastic.Falling down makes us better, because we learn how to get up.5. Why did the author shout at her mother?A. She was tired after walking home.B. She missed some important tests.C. Her mother had ruined her future.D. Her mother didn't pick her up home.6. What does the underlined phrase "held her ground" in Paragraph 2 mean?A. Gave in to me.B. What is the best title for the text?A. Try to meet your kids' demands.B. Offer your kids help if necessary.C. Stop rescuing your kids from failure.D. Be responsible for your kids failure.CNaturally, parents praise their kids. They want to encourage their children every day. But when it comes to building self-esteem (自尊) in children, praise doesn't always have a positive effect, according to a special edition of the journal Child Development. The issue, edited by Eddie and Thomas, is focused on research into how children develop a sense of self and building your child’s confidence takes different skills than you might think.Eddie points out that children are born without a sense of self, but it doesn’t take long before some kids have a lot of confidence and may feel superior to peers, while others may carry more self-doubt and see themselves as inferior." Yet no one really understands what causes children to view themselves the way they do. Surprisingly little is known about the origin s of children’s self-concept," Eddie said.Research has found that when kids have a warm, loving relationship with their parents, they develop higher self-esteem. However, when they are given endless praise that is unequalto their achievements, their self-esteem may drop.Instead of lavish praise, parents should focus on warmth to build self-esteem, researchers have found—specifically, parents should show interest in their kids’ activities and share joy with them. This makes children feel noticed and valued. According to Eddie’s own research, children may develop lower self-esteem when their parents give them lots of positive and overstated praises. Too much praise can make children worry about disappointing their parents, and may lead to an unhealthy attitude toward failure. Other studies suggest that parents can teach children that failure is beneficial by encouraging kids to ask themselves, “Why didn’t I achieve the result I wanted, and what can I do to change the outcome in the future?”Ad ditionally, it’s important for parents to encourage the belief that kids can develop basic abilities through devotion and hard work. Kids who are praised for their effort instead of their ability are more likely to develop a growth mindset, which have a positive impact on their confidence.9. What does the special edition of Child Development focus on?A. When is the best time to build a child’s self-esteem.B. What effect praise has on a child’s self understanding.C. How children develop their sense of self-esteem.D. How blaming and overpraise hurt a child’s confidence.10. How does too much praise hurt children’s self-esteem?A. They’ll be afraid of failing and disappointing their parents.B. They’ll have a false understanding of their ability and fail.C. They’ll become too proud to get along with other children.D. They’ll focus more on their advantages than their weaknesses.11. What can we infer from the last paragraph?A. Children’s effort will help to build their confidence.B. Children should he taught the value of hard work.C. Praising a child’s ability will make them happier.D. Some parents doubt if kids can develop their abilities.12. Which of the following is the passage mainly about?A. Praising a child for any reason helps build his self-esteem.B. How kids develop their sense of self-esteem differently.C. Why some kids have more self-doubt than the others.D. Participation and encouragement build a kid’s self-esteem.DThe Pareto principle, also known as the 80/20 rule, the law of the vital few, states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. Management consultant Joseph M. Juran suggested the principle and named it after Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto, who noted the 80/20 connection while at the University of Lausanne in 1896, as published in his first paper. Essentially, Pareto showed that approximately 80% of the land in Italy was owned by 20% of the population. It is an axiom of business management that “80% of sales come from 20% of clients”.Richard Koch authored the book, The 80/20 Principle, which illustrated some practical applications of the Pareto principle in business management and life. Mathematically, the 80/20 rule is roughly followed by a power law distribution, also known as a Pareto distribution, for a particular set of parameters, and many natural phenomena have been shown empirically to exhibit such a distribution. The Pareto principle is only tangentially related to Pareto efficiency. Pareto developed both concepts in the context of the distribution of income and wealth among the population. The original observation was in connection with population and wealth. Pareto noticed that 80% of Italy’s land was owned by 20% of the population. He then carried out surveys on a variety of other countries and found to his surprise that a similar distribution applied.A chart that gave the inequality a very visible and comprehensible form, the so-called “champagne glass” effect, was contained in the 1992 United Nations Development Program Report, which showed that distribution of global income is very uneven, with the richest 20% of the world’s population controlling 82.7% of the world’s income. In computer science the Pareto principle can be applied to optimization efforts. For example, Microsoft noted that by fixing the top 20% of the most-reported bugs, 80% of the related errors and crashes in a given system would be eliminated. Lowell Arthur expressedthat “20 percent of the code has 80 percent of the errors. Find them, fix them!”It was also discovered that in general the 80% of a certain piece of software can be written in 20% of the total allocated time. Conversely, the hardest 20% of the code takes 80% of the time. This factor is usually a part of COCOMO estimating for software coding. In load testing, it is also common practice to estimate that 80% of the traffic will occur during a particular 20% of the total time period. It has been inferred the Pareto principle applies to athletic training, where roughly 20% of the exercises and habits have 80% of the impact and the trainee should not focus so much on a varied training. This does not necessarily mean that having a healthy diet or going to the gym are not important, but they are not as significant as the key activities. It is also important to note this 80/20 rule has yet to be scientifically tested in controlled studies with regards to athletic training. In baseball, the Pareto principle has been observed in Wins Above Replacement, an attempt to combine multiple statistics to determine a player’s overall importance to a team.“15% of the all the players last year produced 85% of the total wins with the other 85% of the players creating 15% of the wins. The Pareto Principle holds up pretty soundly when it is applied to baseball...”13. What does the underlined word mean in the first paragraph?A. ruleB. legendC. conclusionD. imagination14. Which of the following is TRUE?A. Richard Koch discovered the 80/20 Principle and authored a book named after the Principle.B. Pareto noticed that 80% of world's land was owned by 20% of the population.C. Fixing the top 20% of the most-reported bugs may not eliminate 80% of the related errors and crashes in a given system.D. Having a healthy diet or going to the gym are not as important as the key activities in athletic training.15. The author wrote this article .A. to introduce those famous scientists who contribute to the 80/20 PrincipleB. to look back the history of the 80/20 PrincipleC. to introduce the applications of the 80/20 PrincipleD. to draw people’s attention to the 20% important things in various areas第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AShirley Temple(1928—2014),an American actress, was considered amongthe most successful child stars in the history of film. At the height of her popularity, from 1935 to 1938,Temple was the biggest box-office attraction in Hollywood. Temple made a number of films as a teenager, but her appeal had faded, and the films were not successful. She lost the election, but Temple displayed her determination and went on to enjoy a long and successful career with the United Nations and the State Department. After retirement, she reposed that she was at peace with her life and proud of her accomplishments in two of the nation's most influential areas.“If I had to do it all over again.”Shirley Temple once declared,“I wouldn't change anything.”1. But eight months ago our car was hit bya passing vehicle and it was destroyed. No problem, I thought: we’ll buy another. But the insurance payout didn’t even begin to cover the costs of buying a new car—I worked out that, with the loan (贷款) we’d need plus petrol, insurance, parking permits and tax, we would make a payment as much as £600 a month. And that’s when I had my fancy idea. Why not just give up having a car at all? I live in London. W e have a railway station behind our house, a tube station 10 minutes’ walk away, and a bus stop at the end of the street. A new car club had just opened in our area, and one of its shiny little red Peugeots was parked nearby. If any family in Britain could live without a car, I reasoned, then surely we were that family. But my new car-free idea, sadly, wasn’t shared by my family. My teenage daughters were horrified. What would their friends think about our family being “too poor to afford a car”? (I wasn’t that bothered what they thought, and I suggested the girls should take the same approach.)My friends, too, were astonished at our plan. What would happen if someone got seriously ill overnight and needed to go to hospital? (an ambulance) How would the children get to and from their many events? (buses and trains) People smiled as though this was another of my mad ideas, before saying they were sure I’d soon realize that a car was a necessity.Eight months on, I wonder whether we’ll ever own a car again. The idea that you “have to” own a car, especially if you live in a city, is all in the mind. I live—and many other citizens do too—in a place that has never been better served by public transport, and yet car ownership has never been higher. We worry about rising car costs, but we’d be better off asking something much more basic: do I really need a car? Certainly the answer is no, and I’m a lot richer because I dared to ask the question.5. And as a new study carried out on mice in the lab has shown, exercise done early in life can reward you in your adult years.A team of researchers at the University of California studied the effects of early exercise on adult physical activity, body mass and eating. They found that early-age exercise in mice has positive effects on adult levels of voluntary exercise in addition to reducing body mass.“These results may have an effect on the importance of regular physical education in elementary and middle schools,” said Theodore Garland, a professor of biology, who led the research project. “If kids exercise regularly through their school years, then they may be more likely to exercise as adults, which could have far-reaching positive effects on human health and well-being.”Although the positive effects of early-life exercise lasted for only one week, it is important to note that one week in the life of a mouse is the same as about nine months for humans. “Our results suggest that any positive effects of early-life exercise on adult exercise will need to be kept up if they are to be long-lasting.”His team of researchers found, too, that all mice that had access to early exercise were lighter in weight than non-exercised mice.Garland explained that, in general, exercise will stimulate appetite sooner or later. However, it is possible that certain types of exercise, done for certain periods of time or at certain light levels, might not stimulate appetite much, if at all, at least in some individuals.“If we could understand what sorts of exercise these might be, then we might be able to tailor exercise recommendations in a way that would bring the benefits of exercise without increase in appetite, leading to a better chance of weight loss,” he said.9. How long do the positive effects of early-life exercise last for a mouse?A. One dayB. One weekC. One monthD. Nine months10. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article?A. B My First Marathon(马拉松) A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead. I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn't do either well. He later informed me that I was “not athletic”. The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills! The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn't even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself. Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces(鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted! At mile 3, I passed a sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!” By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again. By mile 21, I was starving! As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running. I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. People settle in these places because they are easy to get to and naturally suited to communications and trade. New York City, for example, is near a large harbour at the mouth of the Hudson River. Over 300 years its population grew gradually from 800 people to 8 million. But not all cities develop slowly over a long period of time. Boom towns grow from nothing almost overnight. In 1896, Dawson, Canada, was unmapped wilderness(荒野). But gold was discovered there in 1897, and two years later, it was one of the largest cities in the West, with a population of 30,000. Dawson did not have any of the natural conveniences of cities like London or Paris. People went there for gold. They travelled over snow-covered mountains and sailed hundreds of miles up icy rivers. The path to Dawson was covered with thirty feet of wet snow that could fall without warming. An avalanche(雪崩) once closed the path, killing 63 people. For many who made it to Dawson, however, the rewards were worth the difficult trip. Of the first 20,000 people who dug for gold, 4,000 got rich. About 100 of these stayed rich men for the rest of their lives. But no matter how rich they were, Dawson was never comfortable. Necessities like food and wood were very expensive. But soon, the gold that Dawson depended on had all been found. The city was crowded with disappointed people with no interest in settling down, and when they heard there were new gold discoveries in Alaska, they left Dawson City as quickly as they had
