（一）One could interpret much of thework of Beethoven//by saying that suffering is inevitable, //butthe courage to fight it renders life worth living.(25words)

词汇要点：

1)inevitable//adj.不可避免的，必然会发生的

2)render//v.给予，回报;使处于某种状态;翻译

结构要点：

1)整个句子主干是One could interpret…;

2)by saying that…介词短语做状语，后面的that是宾语从句;

3)that suffering is inevitable,but the courage…renders life worthliving是宾语从句中but 连接的两个并列句。

汉译逻辑要点：

1)One could interpret much of the work of Beethoven是第一个并列句的主干部分。One是表泛指的代词，应该翻译为“一个人，我们，大家”。interpret是“解释，解读”的意思。这个部分可以直接翻译为：我们可以解读贝多芬大多数作品。

2)by saying that suffering is inevitable是介词短语。suffering是“痛苦，遭罪”，inevitable 是“不可避免的”。这个部分直接翻译的结果是：通过说痛苦是不可避免的。它是状语修饰前面的One could interpret…，所以可以翻译到动词interpret前面，结果是：我们可以通过说痛苦是不可避免的来解读贝多芬大多数作品。这个译文不通顺，尤其是“我们可以通过说…来解读”，可以理解这个句子的意思是，我们解读贝多芬大多数作品是这样来解读的，即认为“痛苦是不可避免的”。所以调整为：我们可以这样来解读贝多芬大多数作品：痛苦是难以避免的。

3)but the courage to fight it renders life worth living是but连接的并列句。代词it指代的是上文的suffering，所以the courage to fight it可以翻译为“与痛苦相抗争的勇气”。render在这里是“使”的意思;renders life worth living直接翻译就是“使生命值得生活下去”，这样翻译可以接受，可以适当引申美化一下：使得生命值得继续。所以这个部分翻译为：但是与痛苦相抗争的勇气使得生命值得继续。

参考译文：

我们可以这样来解读贝多芬大多数作品：痛苦是难以避免的，但是与之相抗争的勇气使得生命值得继续。

词汇要点：

1)advocate//v.拥护，提倡，支持

2)associate//v.联合，联系，联盟

结构要点：

1)主干结构是Especially significant washis view of freedom，其中表语especiallysignificant 前置构成了倒装;

2)which…wasassociated with…定语从句修饰freedom;

3)冒号后面的分句对前一个句子做补充，主干是headvocated…。

汉译逻辑要点：

1)Especiallysignificant was his view of freedom是主句部分。这是一个典型的倒装结构，为了强调表语especiallysignificant而倒装，真正的主语是his view of freedom。可以直接翻译：尤为重要的是他对自由的观点。

2)which,for him,was associated with the rights and responsibilities of the individual 是which引导的定语从句。这个定语从句，可以直接翻译在后面，采用重复先行词的方式来翻译，其先行词是freedom(自由)。for him是“对他而言，对他来说”。be associated with是“与…相联系”的意思。therights and responsibilities of the individual，是theindividual修饰前面的the rights and responsibilities，应该翻译为“个人的权利和责任”。所以这个部分可以翻译为：对他而言，自由是与个人的权利和责任联系在一起的。

3)he advocatedfreedom of thought and of personal expression是冒号隔开的同位语从句，是在解释说明上文的hisview of freedom。需要注意ofthought and of personal expression是and并列的两个of介词短语都修饰前面的freedom。这个部分可以直接翻译为：他倡导思想自由和个人言论自由。

参考译文：
