Passage One

My mum says my head is too expensive, because all my operations have cost millions of dollars.

I am sick with hydrocephalus. That means “water in the head”. Water runs through the body like a river, but sometimes it won’t leave my head. That water gives me bad headaches and lots of other problems. So, doctors put a small tube(管子) in me to take away that water from my head.

I stay in the hospital most of the time. Sometimes the doctors let me go out to play. But sometimes, if I play too much, my tube has problems. I have to go back to the hospital.

My doctor, Dr Beck, is the greatest. He takes good care of me, and he’s a lot of fun, too. My illness is hard to understand, but Dr. Beck always takes time to teach me about it by drawing pictures or telling stories, I draw cartoons for him, too, to make him laugh when he gets tired.

When I grow up, I dream of becoming a doctor so that I can take care of kids like me. I have been in the hospital a lot, and my mum is a nurse, so I have learned a lot by watching and asking questions.

When I’m a doctor, I’ll tell sick kids my story to make them feel better when they’re afraid.

A politician came from the country to a Western city for a day’s stay. He went to one of the popular hotels and registered, but was invited out to dine at the home of a friend. When his bill was presented to him, he found the charge was for a day’s board, including dinner. He protested vigorously. The genial clerk explained to him that the American plan was based strictly on time, and that the fact that he had chosen to dine elsewhere had no effect upon the charge. He paid the bill, very much dissatisfied. Then, finding that meals were still being served, he hurried into one of the dining-rooms, hastily seized the menu card, and ordered a very sumptuous repast, in an effort to “get even”. Finally he finished, and the waiter handed him a check of nineteen dollars.

“What’s that for?” he demanded. “Your dinner, sir,” replied the waiter.

“Dinner!” he exclaimed, indignantly, “I have already paid for my dinner in my bill. I am staying here on the American plan.”“Then, sir,” said the waiter, quietly, “you should have gone into the other dining-room. This is the European-plan cafe.”

A young man was in love with a beautiful girl. Soon she became his fiancee. The man was very poor but the girl was rich. The young man wanted to make her a present on her birthday, but he had no idea how to do it, as he had very little money. The next morning he went to a shop. There were many fine things there: rings, gold watches, diamonds---but all these things were too expensive. There was one thing he could not take his eyes off. It was a beautiful vase. That was a suitable present for his fiancee. He had been looking at the vase for half an hour when the manager of the shop noticed him. The young man looked so pale, sad and unhappy that the manager asked what had happened to him.

The young man told him everything. The manager felt sorry for him and decided to help him. A brilliant idea struck him. The manager pointed to the corner of the shop. To his great surprise the young man saw a vase broken into many pieces. The manager said, “ I shall order my servant to pack it and take it to your fiancee. When he enters the room, he will drop it.”
