People clapped, danced and threw coins into his case for the local food bank. Horam caught himself thinking, “How, at the age of 79, do I come to be playing music to people on the streets?”The question preoccupied him, because, some years ago at a family gathering, Gavin, his eldest son, said,“You know what, Dad? But four bridges are particularly unusual: each 26foot structure was fashioned from concrete by a giant robotic printer. They are part of a revolution (大变革) that is seeing 3D printers move from the tabletop to the construction lot.3D construction printers work a lot like homeoffice ones, except instead of ink they spit out concrete. Nozzles (喷嘴) run back and forth on rails, with computers controlling the time and speed, so that a layer of concrete is laid down where needed. By the time the slowmoving nozzle reaches the end of its path, the layer has usually hardened just enough to lay down another on top of the first, building up, layerbylayer, a homesized wall. With a precise pattern of deposit, the nozzle can leave space for windows, doors, and other design and structural elements. It takes about 24 hours of printing to build a 500squarefoot singlefloor home. “The printing process can complete the structure and finish the inner and outer surfaces at the same time,”says Jason Ballard, cofounder and CEO of ICON, an Austin, Texas company. “That normally takes 20 people representing five or six different trades to work several days.”3D construction printers are also less wasteful. A typical home construction site generates about four tons of waste. Because the concrete used in conventional construction is applied uniformly, regardless of whether it's needed for structural support in a particular area or not, about half of the concrete is wasted. 3D printers, however, can vary the thickness of a structure with great precision, using concrete only where it is really needed. So far, printing buildings has been a modest, lowcost affair. For instance, ICON printed a house in Austin, Texas, intended for families, at a cost of $10,000, and has a contract to print a total of six. Then it plans to take a printer down to Latin America to build 50 lowcost homes there.12.Why does the author discuss the nozzle in Paragraph 2?A.To analyze why the nozzle is so important.B.To confirm 3D construction printers are slow.C.To explain how 3D construction printers work.D.To argue the precision of the nozzle needs improving.13.What does Jason Ballard say about 3D construction printers?A.They are highly efficient.B.They are a little complex.C.They increase the building cost.D.They will replace builders one day.14.How is Paragraph 4 mainly developed?A.By making a contrast.B.By giving examples.C.By describing a process.D.By analyzing causes.15.What can be a suitable title for the text?A.Printed Bridges Become a Fashion in the NetherlandsB.3D Printing Technology Is Key to Housing ProblemsC.Your House Is Going to Be Greener in the FutureD.Your Next House May Come Out of a 3D Printer第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Besides owning some cooking tools and farming equipment, the Tarahumaras exist much as they did before the Spanish arrived in the 1600s. They live in caves or in small houses made of stone and wood, and they eat what they can grow on the dry land.Ten years ago, linguist(语言学家) James Copeland entered the world of the Tarahumaras to study their language and culture. Since then, he has been visiting the Tarahumaras three or four times a year. Tarahumara is not a written language, so part of Copeland's project was to learn to speak Tarahumara so that he could deal directly with the people. "There are no language police," Copeland says. "Children are seldom corrected by their parents. They learn by observation of speech in conversations and by imitation."Copeland learned the language through his frequent exposure(暴露) to it and by analyzing the grammar. His linguistic skills and mastery of German, Spanish, French, and Russian, plus a partial knowledge of twenty other languages, also helped. Drawing on his research, Copeland plans to produce a Tarahumara grammar book in English and perhaps one in Spanish. The idea to study the Tarahumaras came to Copeland in 1984 when he discovered that very little research had been done on their language. He got in touch with a Tarahumara Indian called Lornezo Gonzalez through a social worker who worked with the Tarahumaras in the border town of Juarez, Mexico. At first, Gonzalez was very reluctant to cooperate. He told Copeland that no amount of money could buy his language. But after Copeland explained to him what he intended to do with his research and how it would benefit the Tarahumaras, Gonzalez agreed to help and took Copeland to his village. "Over a period of a year our relationship became closer and warmer," says Copeland. "Thanks to him, the Tarahumaras started trusting us and understood what we were doing."1. 专题限时检测(二十) 阅读理解C篇专练(一)(共3篇,限时24分钟)A(2019·无锡一模)Captain America and Blackpanther were about to defend Earth from the criminal Thanos when Kevin Foley first noticed something was wrong.Foley, a 46yearold informationtechnology worker from Kyle, Texas, was heading into the theater to see Avengers: Infinity War when he realized he was having trouble breathing normally. The same symptom struck again during another movie the following night, but more severe this time.Once the cast on the second film rolled, Foley took action: he looked at his wristwatch. It was a bigger step than you might imagine, because Foley was wearing an Apple Watch equipped with medical sensors and experimental software to track basic functions of his heart. And the watch was worried. It had, according to the display, detected signs of an irregular heartbeat. Before long, Foley was in an emergency room, where doctors hooked him up to an ECG (心电图), which showed that he was in atrial fibrillation (心房颤动), an irregular heartbeat that can lead to blood clots (血栓), stroke and other potentially disastrous diseases.Foley spent the next few days in the hospital while doctors worked to return him to a normal heart rhythm — eventually turning to a procedure called electrical cardioversion to shock his heart back to normal.Foley is doing fine now.But he believes that, if not for the warning on his watch, he might not have sought help in time.“I would have never known,” he says.Foley and his watch were part of an experiment run by Apple and Stanford's medical school. But beginning Dec.6, anyone can get an onthefly heart checkup, assuming they've paid $399 or more for an Apple Watch. That's when Apple will launch a software update that turns its latest model, called the Series 4, into a personal ECG, thanks to an innovative new sensor.Though less complicated than hospital ECG machines, the watch version can still provide basic information and warnings of potential risks worthy of a closer look by a medical professional. For Apple, this new ECG on your wrist is its biggest bet yet that personal technology will inevitably include personal health.Along with competitors, Apple has already offered fitness functions, such as apps to track the steps you've walked. But with the new ECG scan, Apple is moving straight into medical aspects of health, a distinction underlined by the fact it sought — and received — Food and Drug Administration clearance for the heart monitor.A.To arouse the readers' interest.B.To raise a common problem.C.To lead the readers to the topic.D.To guide the readers to do first aid.解析:选C 推理判断题。

2020届高考英语二轮复习阅读理解之题型重组第14组学案(江苏专用)

第十四组(建议用时:20分钟)Ⅰ.阅读理解The event that stands out in my memory happened one morning in 1983 when I was 14 years old.I was at home with my mother, getting ready for the afternoon session of school.I was doing my homework when I heard raised voices. At first I thought nothing of it—customers in the motorcycle shop directly below us often became unruly and loud, but I soon realized this was different.“Quick!Remove the motorcycles from the shop,”someone yelled. Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When I opened the front door of our flat to investigate,a thick cloud of smoke, billowing up from the ground floor, greeted me.The motorcycle shop had caught fire.My mum,who had been working in the kitchen, hurried to the living room.We rushed out of the door and along the corridor through the smoke. We were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Mum stopped in her tracks. She turned around and headed back the way we came.I had no idea what she was doing, but I followed suit.Mum had suddenly remembered the Korean lady in her 70s who lived next door to us,who we called Makcik.Mum began banging on Makcik’s door, but to no avail. As the smoke thickened around us,I could see many of our neighbors—some still in their pyjamas—running for safety.“She would have run for safety like everyone else!” I cried.Mum refused to give up.“I know Makcik’s still inside,”she said as she pounded the door.“Go downstairs,Shaji.Go now!”However, frozen with fear,I stood rooted to the spot.By then, both of us were coughing and our eyes were stinging.Time seemed to stand still, though we were probably there for only two or three minutes.Just as I was beginning to suffocate(窒息),the door opened.Makcik stood there, totally confused.Mum was right—she had been unaware of what was happening.Grabbing her hand,Mum led Makcik downstairs and outside to a safe spot where people had gathered to witness the fire. The firemen had just arrived and set about fighting the blaze, which was reaching up to the two floors above the motorcycle shop.Comprehending the gravity of the situation,Makcik broke down.Holding my mother’s hands tightly, and with tears flowing down her cheeks, she spoke to Mum.I could not hear whatshe said, but there was no mistaking her gratitude.I learned later that Makcik was sleeping when the fire broke out.I dread to think what would have happened if Mum had not turned back for her.Soon the firemen put out the billowing flames. There were no deaths or injuries, though the motorcycle shop was completely destroyed.Although the fire had damaged our corridor badly,it was put out before it could spread into our flat. Our home had been saved, though everything was covered in soot(黑灰) and an awful smell hung in the air. And,sadly,my pet lovebirds were dead.I felt terrible for not saving them in my haste. However, the thought of Mum’s courageous act in saving a human life brought great relief.Years later,I asked Mum about this incident. She said she was familiar with Makcik’s daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. When I asked if she was scared,Mum replied:“When_a_loved_one_is_in_danger,the_thought_of_fear_never_crosses_the_mind.”During my school days, whenever I wrote an essay about courageous deeds,I always focused on soldiers risking their lives to save others. It never occurred to me to write about my mum who had,in her determined way, saved our elderly neighbor.Today I know better.Maria Thomas,a timid and modest lady, someone who would not be mistaken for a superhero, had turned out to be my real hero.1.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.A.firefighters broke in and saved Makcik from the fireB.Makcik ran for safety like too scared to moveD.she was informed that Makcik was in desperate need of help3.What made Makcik break down after she reached a safe spot?A.The big fire was spreading rapidly.B.P eople’s terrible screams shocked her.C.Mum’s sudden appearance moved her deeply.D.The serious situation made her confused.4.Which of the following best explains the underlined sentence “When a loved one is in world leaders for a big announcement about energy and climate change. It’s deeply moving to be in this city just two weeks after the horrific attacks here, and I’m inspired by the way the French people have persevered in such a difficult time. Two related proposals are being announced at the event. One is Mission Innovation, a commitment by more than ten countries to invest more in research on clean energy. The other is Breakthrough Energy Coalition, a global group of private investors who will support companies that are taking innovative cleanenergy ideas out of the lab and into the marketplace. Our primary goal with the Coalition is as much to accelerate progress on clean energy as it’s to make a profit. Here’s the thinking behind these two efforts. The world is going to be using 50 percent more energy by midcentury than it does today. That should be good news, especially for the world’s poorest, because right now more than 1 billion people live without access to basic energy services.Affordable and reliable energy makes it easier for them to grow more food, run schools and hospitals and businesses, have refrigerators at home, and take advantage of all the things that make up modern life.Low-and middle-income countries need energy to develop their economies and help more people escape poverty. But the world’s growing demand for energy is also a big problem, because most of that energy comes from hydrocarbons, which emit greenhouse gases and drive climate change. So we need to move to sources of energy that are affordable and reliable, and don’t produce any carbon. The renewable technologies we have today, like wind and solar, have made a lot of progressand could be one path to a zerocarbon energy future. But given the scale of the challenge, we need to be exploring many different paths—and that means we also need to invent new approaches.Private companies will ultimately develop these energy breakthroughs, but their work will rely on the kind of basic research that only governments can fund. Both have a role to play.I’m honored to be a part of this event. It’s great to see so many government leaders and investors making these commitments and showing how the public and private sectors can come together to work on big problems.I’m optimistic that we can invent the tools we need to generate clean, affordable, reliable energy that will help the poorest improve their lives and also stop climate change.I hope even more governments and investors will join us.A Big Win for Cheap, Clean EnergyTwo1.____________ being announced •Mission InnovationMore than Though it is still too early to know what will happen to the businesses that won the competition (Visa has not announced the winners yet), the key arguments in favor of cashabandonment are that it would lead to more efficient service and carry a lower risk of theft. A recent Ne w York Times article covered restaurants in Manhattan that take plastic only, and supporters are looking forward to an entirely cashless society.Doing away with cash may indeed sound appealing. Supporters often note that China and India have already gone further in this direction than the United States. But a few drawbacks are obvious: Card companies such as Visa charge merchants high processing fees, the risk of fraud(诈骗) balances out the lower risk of theft, older consumers may not wish to make the change, and consumers will lose yet more privacy (large companies will have the ability to track every purchase made). Perhaps the less obvious one is that a cashless system will exclude the poor and the near-poor, for many poor people don’t have credit cards or bank accounts.Conditions in the U.S. are nowhere near suitable for entering a cashless society; too many people would be left behind. Your young friend may be happy to accept money via PayPal or another app, your cafe may use an iPad instead of a cash register, but landlords in lowincome areas still prefer money orders. It’s convenient for consumers to charge, say, an outing to the nailsalon—but when you add the tip to your credit card bill, it may never make it to the worker.1.Why did Visa hold the competition?A.To support small businesses.B.To attract more users.C.To promote cashabandonment.D.To reward successful businesses.2.Which is the disadvantage of a cashless society according to the author?A.The risk of fraud is lower than that of theft.B.Consumers’privacy has more potential risks.C.More plastic is used and causes resource waste.D.The poor and the near-poor are unwilling to use cash.3.Who would probably prefer to be paid in cash?A.A landlord in a developed area.B.A cafe owner.C.A young person.D.A worker in a nail salon.第三组Ⅰ.单项填空1.B解析:考查动词的时态。

语篇解读:本文主要介绍了世界上几个最佳海滩的一些特色和去旅行的费用。 1.Siesta Beach is different from other three beaches in that ________. A.tourists enjoy an exciting sport B.fine sugar white sand covers it C.many famous persons visit it D.children have more great fun 解析:选D 细节理解题。从No.2 Siesta Beach的最后一句“It's also a great spot for kids to collect seashells and sand dollars.”可知该沙滩是个让孩子们收集贝壳和沙海胆的好地方,它会非常吸引孩子游玩,使他们获得快乐。 2.How much may they pay at least if Mr and Mrs Smith from Chicago visit a beach? A.$364. B.$435. C.$579. D.$657. 解析:选B 细节理解题。由于夫妇是来自Chicago,所以是Clearwater Beach,Airfare应当是71×2=142,另外酒店费用是293一晚,所以最少应该是293+142=435。 B (2019·南京、盐城二模)That competition keeps prices down is well known. But it is hard to measure by just how much, because prices vary for all sorts of reasons, from differences in labour costs and rents to taxes.Rising to the challenge is a new paper in The Economic Journal by Giacomo Calzolari, Andrea Ichino, Francesco Manaresi and Viki Nellas, economists at the European University Institute, Bologna University and the Italian central bank. They looked at pharmacies (药房) and specifically at customers who may be particularly easy to rip off: new parents. Using data for 2007 to 2010 covering about a fifth of pharmacies in Italy, the researchers measured the way in which prices of hygiene products for babies changed as the number of babies varied. They took advantage of a peculiar law from the 1960s, according to which regions with at most 7,500 people are allowed just one pharmacy (supposedly to keep the quality of services high). They compared prices in places with populations just below this threshold, and just above. The products studied included some 3,000 varieties of shampoos, bath foams, baby wipes, creams and so on.Many are also used by adults on themselves. Some people, for example, prefer suncream labelled “for children” because of its high level of protection. When raising prices for these products, even a pharmacist with a monopoly (垄断) must consider the risk that adult users will switch to products that are not aimed at children. But a rise in the number of babies, and hence buyers who are parents, could tip_the_scales towards price increases.By contrast, the pharmacist should already be charging as much as parents are willing to pay for products without adult users, such as nappies. The scholars found that pharmacists raised prices when there were more new parents — but only in regions with a single pharmacy, and not for nappies. In monopoly areas a doubling of the number of babies from one month to the next (not unusual in a small population) coincided with a 5% increase in the price of the basket of babyhygiene products. The study is timely.Italy's government has started to loosen some of the many restrictions that stop competition in the pharmacy sector (though not yet the one that the researchers relied on).But such regulations are plentiful in many other lines of business, and not just in Italy. The consumers who pay the price are often
