第一课
当我们今天听着有关双语教育问题的争论时,我们应该设身处地替当时的撒克逊农民想
一想,新的统治阶级把法语用来对抗撒克逊农民自己的语言,从而在农民周围筑起一道文化
障碍。当英国人在像觉醒者赫里沃德这样的撒克逊领袖领导下起来造反时,他们一定深深地
感受到了文化上的屈辱。“标准英语”——如果那时候有这个名词的话——已经变成法语。而
九百年后我们在美国这儿仍然继承了这种影响。
第四课
我们能否建立一个把东西南北联在一起的伟大的全球联盟来对付这些敌人,以确保人类
享有更为富有成效的生活呢?你是否愿意参加这一具有历史意义的行动呢?
在世界漫长的历史上,只有少数几代人能在自由面临极大危险的时刻被赋予保卫自由的
任务。在这一重任面前,我不退缩,我欢迎这一重任。我认为我们中间不会有人愿意与别人
或另一代人调换位置。我们从事这一事业的那种精力、信念和献身精神将照耀我们的国家和
一切为此出力的人们。这一火焰所发出的光芒将真正照亮这个世界。
第十课
更令他们痛苦的是,他们发现自己原来的工作已被留在家里的人夺占了。而当时又正值
经济萧条时期,新的工作无法找到,现有的工作机会本就为数不多,而且人们又宁愿聘用非
退伍军人,而把退伍军人看作难对付的孩子,不愿聘用。就连他们自己的家对他们来说也常
常是不舒服的;他们再也不能适应家乡和家庭了,并且萌生出一种突如其来的、迷惘的厌世
之感。这种感觉不论是他们自己还是他们的亲友都不能理解。战争激起了他们的劲头,打掉
了他们的天真幼稚。而现在,在遍布全国的沉睡的、落后的地方,到处都要求他们抑制他们
的劲头,并恢复那种自欺欺人的、维多利亚式的天真无邪的态度。但是他们现在觉得这种态
度同那种说什么他们的战斗已“使民主在这个世界有了保障”的论调一样,都是陈旧过时的。
再者,似乎家乡的情况还不够受的,退伍军人还得面对凡尔赛和约那种愚蠢的、拿破仑式的
犬儒主义、禁酒法令那种虚伪的行善主义,以及那些发了战争财的人们的洋洋自得的爱国主
义。那些气鼓鼓的美国青年的不满迟早要爆发出来。在经过一段短暂的强烈的怨忿之后,它
终于以一种彻底推翻温文尔雅的行为规范的形式而爆发出来了。
第十四课
纽约太大了,无法为任何一个集团所控制,不论是盎格鲁撤克逊新教的白人还是犹太人、
黑人或来源不同的天主教徒——爱尔兰人、意大利人、西班牙血统的人。所有这些集团都有
他们小小的天地,人数相当多,不容忽视;在维护他们的要求方面都很坚韧,但没有一个强
大到足以制服其他集团。这个城市很典型地把联合国加以吞没,不把它当一回事,把它看作
一个空想、不切实际、虚伪、无法运转的混合体。但是纽约人却在训练自己如何在一个多民
族的社会里共同生活——这是迈向未来必要的开端。
多样化使这个城市色彩无穷。漫步此城,可以不断受到情景与风味方面的教育。有众多
的各有特色的地方可以去吃饭或购买物品。虽然其中最成功的似乎是那些为招引游客而把各
种:民族特色混在一起的地方,但是他们也都有真正的根基。在其他的美国城市,不同的民
族各有自己的地盘,并小心翼翼地加以保护,但是我认为那里没有这种不和谐地把不同的集
团搁在一起的大杂烩。f司样地,在纽约拥有多层高楼的豪华大街与它近邻的穷街陋巷相映
成趣。对纽约的忧伤和刚毅要与其艺术和音乐的财富一起加以赞美。这种结合是不稳定的,
它产生摩擦或是一种不稳定的克制。这种克制有时变成一种真正的容忍。
对纽约的爱与恨成了一个不断交替变化着的情绪问题。这种情绪的变化常常发生在同一
天。这个地方经常使人恼怒,有时也让人振奋。对我来说,这是一个取得不可或缺的经验的
城市。住在这儿,人们可以放心,一定能持续地面向生活。
