What is Digital Television (DTV)?

At present, our terrestrial television services are transmitted in analogue forms. Analogue transmission technology converts sound and pictures into continuously varying electric signals which after transmission,
code ( a series of ones and zeros), are currently available. The analog signal
is first sampled and stored as a digital code, then processed, and finally retrieved. That means DTV is a new way of transmitting television services. Sound and pictures are processed electronically into digital signals, which are then transmitted as a bit stream and reconverted by digital TV sets or appropriate set-top boxes into television programs.
The most common use of television is as a source of information
and entertainment for viewers in their homes.

By way of example, the application of digital technology to our telephone service has not only improved the quality of service but also has enabled the development of value-added services such as interactive enquiry and phone-banking services. This method provides a cleaner signal that is less vulnerable to distortion. The difference in quality between digital television and regular television is similar to the difference between a compact disc recording (using digital technology) and an audiotape or long-playing record. Benefits of DTV The benefits of DTV are manifold. (1) Efficient utilization of bandwidth. At present, using analogue technology, a whole frequency channel is needed for carrying one television program. By using video compression technology, DTV enables several television programs to be digitally combined before they are carried on the same frequency channel. This will significantly improve spectrum efficiency, thus enabling the provision of wider programming choice within the same bandwidth.

Under the analogue environment, television signals are subject to interference by other signal sources such as power line, reflections from buildings, etc. The reception quality is therefore less than ideal. As digital signals are more robust than analogue ones, consumers would be able to get much better sound and picture quality through DTV. In addition, DTV enables the provision of High Definition Television (HDTV) which delivers cinemaquality pictures and CD-quality sound. Also more channel choices will be provided.
