1. staff n. 职员，(全体)员工

(1)集合名词，表示复数的含义，使用时不加s。

e. g. The teaching staff of this college is/ are excellent.这所大学的教师都是出类拔萃的。

(2)……个员工"应该说a staff of…

e. g. a staff of 100(-百名员工)，不能说100 staffs.

(3)on the staff 员工中

e. g. He’s got some experts on the staf

f. 他的职员中有一些专家。

2. impress vt 给……留下印象

impress sb. / sb. be impressed by sth

e. g. 1 was very impressed by his story. 他的故事深深打动了我。

The woman impressed me most unfavorably. 这女人给我的印象极差。

<>impression 印象

e. g. First impressions are most lasting. 先入为主。

Make/leave impression on sb./give impression to sb. 给某人留下深刻印象

e. g. The new teacher made a good impression on the students.

新教师给学生留下了寸个好印象。

<> adj. impressive 给人深刻印象的

e. g. That opera house is an impressive building. 那个歌剧院是能给人留下深刻印象的建筑物。

3. read

(1)阅读

e. g. He read the newspaper after supple.他在晚饭后，阅读报纸。

(2)看懂

to read a map 识图to read music 识谱read a riddle 猜出谜语

e. g. It seems that he can read my mind. 好像他能明白我在想什么似的。

(3)上面写着(常用sth. 做主语)

eg. It read "McDonald's Hamburgers". 上面写着麦当劳汉堡。

The poster reads "No smoking!" 招贴画上写着禁止吸烟。

The meter reads 1.5 hours. 计时器显示时间为一个半小时.

4. service n.

(1)服务

e. g. That hotel is noted for its fine service. 那家旅馆以l服务优良著称。

(2)服役

e. g. He died in the service of his country 他为国捐躯。

(3) 机构

e. g. the prison service 监狱管理杭构!

v. serve

①服务，为……服务

e. g. Children must be educated to serve their country when they grow up.

必须教育孩子长大后为国家服务。

②服(军)役，服(牢)役

e. g. He served eight years in prison. 他坐过8 年牢。

③供应(饭菜筝).端上

e. g. She served me a cup of coffee.

④适用，有用，足够

serve as... /for. .. /to do.. .足够......

e. g. A simple example will serve to illustrate the point.

一个简单的例子可以说明这一点。

The sofa could be served as a bed for a couple 0f days

这个沙发可以当床来用些日子。

5. expand v. 扩张，扩展

(1)扩大( cause sth to become greater) 既可指数量或体积上的增加，也可指任何方向的扩大，或指知识的增长，生意的扩大等­

e. g. It is a common sense that water expands when it freezes.

水结冰时体积膨胀，这是常识。

He is thinking of expanding his business.他正考虑扩展他的生意。

He went abroad to further his study, hoping to expand his knowledge of foreign culture.

他出国进修，希望拓展外国文化方面的知识。

(2) 张开，展开(open up or out; spread out)

e. g. The eagle expanded its wings and flew high. 老鹰展翅高飞。

e. g. Metals contract as they get cooler.

(3)比较:enlarge，extend

enlarge v. 扩大，扩展(指体积，大小，范围，能力等方面的增加)

e. g. The house was enlarged with a new wing. 增建的厢房使房屋扩大了。

extend v.

①延长，延伸;扩大，扩展

e. g. Can't you extend your visit for a few days?

你们访问的时间不能延长几天吗?

②伸出(=reach out)

e. g. He extended his hand in greeting. 他伸出手来表示欢迎。

③致，给予，提供extend sth. to sb.

e. g. extend a warm welcome to our visitors 对我们的来访者表示热烈欢迎

(1)开始从事，发动

e. g. The miners launched a strike. 矿工发动了一场罢工。

They are thinking of launching a promotion campaign.

他们考虑搞一个促销活动。

(2)发射，使(船)下水

We launched a new project.我们开始从事一个新项目。
