对他而言,我是一个乏味的怪物:一个他不得不听其教诲的父亲,一个还沉湎于语法规则的人,对此我儿子似乎颇为反感。

8因为语法对大多数年轻学生而言枯燥且乏味,所以我觉得讲授语法得一步一步、注重技巧地进行。

Teaching Procedure Language Structures 1. Ask students to fill in the blanks in language structures before class. 2. The grammatical knowledge should be clearly explained with the help of sample sentences.  Practice I have/ has been doing sth.(present perfect progressive): express finished actions/ situations or actions / situations that began in the past are still continuing e.g. I have been going to that restaurant for months. We have been swimming a lot this summer. He has been working with me since 2000—we still work together at the same place.  Practice II was doing…when + simple past  Practice III had been doing sth. (past perfect progressive)  Practice IV I was wondering if… e.g. I was wondering if you could help me carry this trunk. I was wondering if the doctor could tell me the result. 3. Try a sample conversation with one or two students and then ask Ss to work in pairs and make up dialogues with words and expressions in the textbook. Students are encouraged to use grammar correctly in the ―Cues‖. 4. Students are supposed to shift to different sentences/drills at will, i.e. they should be able to use the language spontaneously and flexibly. 5. Dialogue I 1. The part of Dialogue I is often with ―Chinese feature‖, i.e. talking about people and things in China. Therefore it’s necessary for the teachers to let the students know this. We can find that many language expressions are very useful. This dialogue will give students much confidence and enthusiasm to ―transform‖ their life experience into the world of English. 2. This dialogue should be taught intensively, and more chances should be given to the students to practice orally (pronunciation and intonation). They should say the dialogue and talk about its content with their partners in as a natural a way as possible. 3. This is a full-length dialogue focusing on the language structures; therefore it is strongly recommended that the use of various languages structures be studied intensively. 4. Ask Ss to read Dialogue I. Then ask the following questions to check their understanding on the dialogue. a) Why does Linlin come back from college? b) Why is grandpa in tears? c) How many medals have Chinese athletes won counting today? d) Why does grandpa get very emotional every time he watches Chinese athletes win an international sports event? e) Did the two good runners and their coach manage to go to the 1932 Games? 5. Language points  be in tears: crying  hold back one’s tears: try not to cry / fight back tears  bring back one’s memories: make one remember sth.
