Challenges and Opportunities for Students

Challenges and Opportunities for Students

Challenges and Opportunities for Studentsgood morning, ladies and gentlemen. at present, my fellowstudents and i have before us great personal and educational opportunities. at the same time, we are running into a variety of challenges.today's college education provides us with opportunities for bringing out the creativity and talent that we have within us. thisis nurtured both by our learned professors, and by the growing dimension of knowledge sources, such as the world wide web and multimedia sources. our educational experience is being transformed both within and beyond the traditional classroom. however, challenges still exist.at the end of every semester, students in my university are required to fill out a questionnaire as a review of the previous semester. the questions usually cover a broad range of college life, from curriculum adjustment to canteen service. and almost every time, the questionnaire includes one essential question, that is: as a college student, what are your major challenges? and almost every answer includes two aspects: studying and professional. these two challenges will remain our preoccupations as long as we live in sucha competitive world.a series of challenges in our studies start from almost the beginning of our freshman year. we may wonder whether we've chosenthe right major. we may wonder if the extracurricular activities add credits to our studies. we may work our heads off to get a glorious a, because b is already mediocre and c is almost unacceptable. later on we may be competing with our hardworking, intelligent peers, including our best friends to get into an ideal graduate school. allof these sound so familiar and they have somehow made our college education so goal-obsessed that we sometimes fail to fully enjoy our educational experience.apart from challenges in learning, there are also professional challenges. the competitive world today has also brought about the “knowledge economy,” which requires the effective use of knowledge for economic and social development, and also requires skilled and multi-oriented students with a marketable vocational sense. therefore, sophisticated calculations upon the value of a university degree are being made. graduate employability statistics are being scrutinized. programs like resume writing and interview skills are seen as a must. again as i've said above, when professional concern dominates our college education, we may lose the essence of our educational experience.indeed, facing these two challenges, how can students manage tobe what the employers seek and at the same time to enjoy a valuable, insightful and rewarding educational experience?for me, the solution to the problem lies in what can be called an “educational synthesis”。

Is-it-good-for-students-to-have-part-time-jobs(学生做

Is it good for students to have part—time jobs? There are many advantages for a student to have a part time job. For instance, it helps him to realize that no success comes from nothing. It enables him to be independent and builds up his self-confidence。

Therefore, part-time jobs can get the students out of the ivory tower and give them the opportunity to know more of himself and of his personal value in society. We all know that the University is a relatively easy time of life, usually in the university, courses than less,we often have a lot of free time to arrange for our own, then there will be some part—time students would have thought to do,because it not only pass the time and there will be certain amount of income. In the university,we must not only enrich their own professional knowledge, enhance their professional skills, more students would like to increase their contacts with the community。

演讲Lecture 1 Further reading for students

Further readingFour Essentials of Public SpeakingAs a basis of effective preparation, it is necessary for you to first get acquaintance of the four essentials of public speaking: speaker, occasion, language and audience.Speaker. Speaker is the subject of public speaking, thus the core of the four essentials. Different people have different talents, and speakers are most effective when they lead from their strengths. From composing a speech to delivering a speech, it is the speaker who keeps making decisions to achieve striking ness. Especially at the delivery stage, the speaker’s voice, body movement and so on is crucial to the success of a speech. A poor speaker may lead a well-composed speech to a total failure. A good speaker knows that typically, 80% of a person’s effectiveness is the result of 21% of his or her actions.Besides, in public speaking, the different identities of speakers may generate speeches of different language styles. Therefore, speaker is the key role of a public speech, whose task is not only to compose awell-organized speech, but most important to vividly deliver such a speech. The nature of the occasion will obviously have a great bearing on your speech. The Occasion. Occasion will dictate not only the content of your speech, but also the duration, the tone, and the expectations of your audience. For example, humor may be inappropriate during a business presentation or a eulogy, while it may be welcome during a wedding speech, or a sports event. Y ou should also be aware of your role and any observances that you should make during your speech. And it is a must that you should be mindful of the occasion and your role in it.The occasion will also set out certain clear goals for you before you start composing your speech, so that you will be better equipped to judge its progress and success of your speech prior to its public airing. A hilarious Best Man speech may have your audience rolling in the aisles, but if you fail to give tribute to the Bride and Groom you will have failed in your role.Audience. Whatever the occasion is, your speech must always be targeted at your audience. If you are familiar with your audience, for example if the occasion is a large family gathering, then your speech should acknowledge and build upon your existing intimacy with your audience. The use of names and personal details of members of your audience can help to engage your listeners. If the speech is to anunfamiliar audience then an early goal of your speech must be to build a degree of trust with the listeners. Y ou must know who your audience are in order to best decide how to affect your message upon them.In public speaking, what is suitable for one group of audience may not be appropriate for another. Analyzing your audience before composing the speech will enable you to give a more acceptable speech, and enable your audience to follow your words more easily.Language. Language is the media of public speaking, and is especially important in such an occasion. The basic structure of verbal speech has its own typical features, which are significantly different from written language. Composing a speech with written language may make the audience feel labored in listening, and may make the speaker drag in his or her delivery as well. A good speaker always understands spoken English has simple structure, frequent repetition, personal language, and variety in delivery. In other words, language used in public speaking is usually specific and concrete in order to make the audience easily follow the speech. Moreover, language in the speech should also be interesting to attract the audience’s attention. Besides, speeches on different occasions require different styles of language. Language in an inaugural speech can go far from that in a toast speech. Thus a good speaker shouldnot only choose words with care and sensitivity, but always use language appropriate for his or her particular audience and occasion.Classification of Public SpeakingWhen speaking of classification of public speeches, people usually consider that all speeches fall into two general types, formal and informal speeches. As a matter of fact, public speaking may be classified in terms of several other ways, such as purpose, content, mode, etc. Considering the content of a speech, we may classify a speech as either technical or non-technical. According to the modes by which speeches are delivered, we may classify a speech as speech by reading aloud, speech by recitation, or impromptus speech. Here we just focus on the different categories of public speaking classified in terms of purpose.A wareness speech. A wareness speeches, which generally highlight the meaning of an event, range from humorous to serious, from routine to unique. Common components of an awareness speech include describing the occasion, explaining the significance of the occasion, describing the person or group of people involved, recalling past events or actions, pointing to future events or actions, etc. Of course, not every awareness speech has all of the above components.Introduction/welcome.An introduction is the meeting of at least two people who don’t know each other. Sometimes it is a speech to introduceoneself to the audience, while sometimes it is a speech to welcome a person by introducing him to the audience and describing the audience as well. Presentation (commencement).A commencement speech is a formal presentation in an academic setting and considerably longer. In such a speech, past achievements should be emphasized, the nature of the award should be explained and new goals may be suggested. Usually the speaker will show his/her appreciation, and may mention anecdotes or unknown events that occurred in the process of his/her work as well as what the award means to him/her.Nomination (acceptance).A nomination speech will identify the person at the beginning unless everyone knows who you are nominating, then you could leave the candidate’s name until the end. Y our task is to give reasons why that person deserves the nomination. The acceptance speech is quite similar to the nomination. To be specific, the candidate demonstrates the reasons given in the nominating speech in his/her acceptance speech. Tribute (farewell).Such speeches are the flip side of an introduction speech. Both the tribute and farewell speech may recall accomplishments and dwell on shared experience, good wishes and hope for a future reunion. When a tribute is to someone who is deceased, it is called a eulogy.Besides the above ones, awareness speech also includes speeches of inauguration, challenge, announcement, entertainment, etc. In this book,we will analyze those speeches in the unit of Developing Speeches for Special occasions.Information speech. Information speech is to make certain concepts clear and introduce new ideas to the audience. An informative speech must describe actual relationship between concepts in the most simple and functional way so that the audience can easily understand. Information speeches sometimes are labeled as presentations, reports, briefings, lectures or demonstrations.Argument/persuasive speech. Speeches of such a category discuss both sides of a question, and call for evaluating choices or options. In an argument speech, the first thing is to reasoning, and then to give evidence. Reasoning here refers to make some statements, while evidence mainly consists of very accurate information, particularly facts or statistics, to support the statements. Persuasive speeches in essence belong to the category of argument speech. It aims at persuading the audience to do something they may not like to do at the moment, or changing their mind about or attitude towards something.Action speech.Action speeches are quite different from argument speeches. Action speeches include indirect suggestions and emotion, trying to get people to act on what they already have chosen or agreed to. As the argument speech is a direct approach, the action speech may be indirect.Different types of speeches require different styles of language and develop in various modes despite certain formats of all public speaking. Itis inevitable to make clear the category of a speech before composing and delivering it.Exercises:Part 1 Multiple-choice question. You are to write in three parts:
In the first part, state specifically what your idea is.
In the second part, provide one or two reasons to support your idea OR describe your idea.
Should Universities Give Priority to Practical Courses for Students?
The issue of whether or not to give priority to practical courses in the universities widely concerned currently. Some students are inclined to claim that the universities should put emphasis on plieve that the traditional courses are more important. For my part, I am in favor of the former opinion.
Another benefit of the practical courses is that we can train our practical skills, which help us meet the challenges in our future career. After graduation, we can survive and succeed when we enter the competitive society because of our increased ability and experiences. Moreover, this will certainly enrich our college life and make it more meaningful and colorful.

Write an essay of at least 60 words on the topic. (请以“学生是否要在学校穿校服”为题写一篇至少60词的作文,标点不占格,以下要点仅供参考)Suggested outline:1. Do you think it is necessary to wear school uniforms?2. What are the advantages or disadvantages of school uniforms?3. What’ s your conclusion(结论)?Is it necessary for students to wear school uniforms?Recently, the issue whether students need to wear school uniforms or not has become a heated discussion. As far as I’m concerned, wearing school uniforms is helpful for us. My reasons can be listed as follows.First of all, wearing school uniforms can make students feel equal. For example, some students who are rich like to wear strange clothes to show off, which is bad for themselves and makes others uncomfortable.Second, when all of the students in the same schoolwear the same clothes, it makes the school tidier and cleaner. Furthermore, wearing school uniforms can help students save some time to decide what they should wear in the next day.In a word, as students, it’s necessary for us to wear school unifor ms. It can not only help us make an equal bridge between students, but also make the school united. In at least 60 words, write a letter to your headmaster suggesting rules you think should be changed or improved. Support your opinions with facts or examples.

FOR loop_counter IN lower_limit..upper_limit LOOP-- 执行的操作END LOOP;在上述语法中,loop_counter是用来记录当前循环迭代次数的变量,lower_limit和upper_limit是循环的上下界。

在每次循环迭代时,都会执行一系列的操作。

2. 示例:使用for循环插入数据•在以下示例中,我们使用for循环向表中插入一些示例数据。

CREATE TABLE students (id INT,name VARCHAR(50));FOR i IN 1..10 LOOPINSERT INTO students (id, name) VALUES (i, 'Student '|| i);END LOOP;在上述示例中,我们创建了一个名为students的表,包括id和name字段。

然后使用for循环从1到10循环迭代,向表中插入了10条记录,其中name字段的值为”Student “加上迭代次数i。

3. for循环中的条件判断•在for循环中也可以使用一个条件来决定是否继续迭代。

FOR i IN REVERSE 10..1 LOOPIF i > 5 THENINSERT INTO students (id, name) VALUES (i, 'Studen t ' || i);END IF;END LOOP;在上述示例中,我们使用了REVERSE关键字来让循环倒序迭代。

在每次迭代时,我们使用条件判断来判断迭代次数i是否大于5,如果满足条件,则向students表中插入一条记录。

4. for循环中的游标•在for循环中,还可以使用游标来迭代遍历查询结果集。

FOR student_rec IN (SELECT * FROM students) LOOP-- 执行的操作END LOOP;在上述示例中,我们使用SELECT语句来查询students表中的所有记录,并将结果集赋值给游标student_rec。
