什么是分级阅读?所谓分级阅读，就是按照孩子在不同年龄段的智力和心理发育程度为他们提供的阅读计划(由具体的分级读物组成)，这些阅读计划一般出自教育专家、专业出版社，比较具有科学性、针对性、系统性。
分级阅读的最大作用是帮助孩子们学习语言、培养阅读能力。
分级阅读在国外应用广泛。
大多数学校都会使用某种分级阅读体系作为孩子课外阅读的主框架。
那么为什么上课以外非常强调让孩子进行分级阅读呢?因为他们认为同龄孩子的阅读水平存在很多差异，一本教科书不可能满足课堂上所有学生的需求，所以孩子需要不同级别的书籍来促进他们的阅读。
从五岁进学校开始(美国的义务教育自五岁开始，称为kindergarten，接下来才是一年级到十二年级)， 老师便持续为每个孩子衡量阅读程度，孩子根据自己的程度循序渐进，培养阅读能力，同时老师也会密切观察孩子的发展给予辅导协助，这项工作至少持续到小学结束，甚至到中学仍然继续进行。
国外的家庭怎样选择适合孩子的分级读物?目前的英文分级制度有数种选择，有一个非常简单好用，就是 一只手，五个手指头 的简易鉴定法，也就是说，如果一页书有五个字以上是生字，这本书对孩子而言，便是有点难了。
不过因为英文对于国内孩子而言是第二语言，所以一般来讲，都会建议如果一页有三个字没学过，这本书对孩子就有一定的挑战。
孩子了解自己的阅读程度后，便可依照个人程度循序渐进，基本上，大部份的阅读应按照自己的等级，但这套方法也是很有弹性的，比如说，孩子也可挑战略高于自身程度的读本，或是那天累了，读读较简单的书，纯享受，也很好。
因为书本的程度适合孩子，如果又能配合孩子的兴趣，孩子一定乐于读书学习，一旦养成习惯，上了轨道，孩子的英文不进步都很难了!读分级阅读应该注意哪些问题?1、同一时期要读同一水平的不同素材，不能一套分级读到底，孩子容易失去兴趣，进阶太快也容易造成困难，孩子一直是纵向的走向，没有横向的平行阅读不行，宽度跟不上，到头来纵向还是会遇到瓶颈。
