Instruction

We can use both -ing forms and infinitives as subjects (but -ing forms are **mon).

Smoking is bad for you.

We can use infinitives to say why we do things.

I got up early to catch the 7.15 train.

After some verbs we use –ing forms. Some of these verbs are: keep(on), finish, stop, give up, go, can’t help, suggest, practise, enjoy, love, like, mind,dislike, hate

Do you mind sharing a room? Alex has gone swimming. I can’t help feeling unhappy. After prepositions we use -ing forms, not infinitives.

You can't live without eating. (NOT ...without to eat.)

I usually watch TV before going to bed. (NOT... before to go to bed.)

When these expressions are followed by a verb, the verb ends in -ing :

It's no use / It's no good

□There's nothing you can do about the situation, so it's no use worry ing about it.

□It's no good try ing to persuade me. You won't succeed.

□There was no point in wait ing any longer, so we went.

But we usually say 'the point of doing something':

It's (not) worth

□I live only a short walk from here, so it's not worth tak ing a taxi.

□Our flight was very early in the morning, so it wasn't worth go ing to bed.

You can say that a film is worth seeing , a book is worth reading etc.:

□What was the film like? Was it worth seeing ?

□Thieves broke into the house but didn't take anything. There was nothing worth stealing .
