Unpack your telescope and verify that all parts are present. Your StarSense Explorer DX includes: a telescopetube, a tripod and mount head, an accessory bag, slow motion controls, an accessory tray, two eyepieces, an erect image diagonal, a ﬁnder scope, a Star Sense phone dock, StarSense Explorer Powered by SkySafariTM app code card, and a hex key (hidden inside the slot in the front of the mount head).2. To set up the tripod, spread the legs outward until they are fully extended and push down the center leg brace.3. Extend the legs of the tripod by loosening the three hand knobs on each leg. Pull each leg section all the wayout and tighten the hand knobs to secure them in place.4. Place the accessory tray on top of the center brace and line up the three holes. Insert the three thumb screwsthrough the bottom of the leg brace and thread them into the tray.5. To attach the slow-motion knobs to your mount, ﬁrst locate the supplied hex key hidden inside the slot in thefront of your mount.6. Place the slow-motion control knob over the D-shaped gear shaft and push inward to make sure it is fullyseated. Use the hex key to tighten the setscrews onto the gear shaft. Return the hex key to its storage position in the front of the mount.7. Hold the telescope tube next to the mount with the dovetail bar on the tube facing the clamp on the top of themount arm.8. Slide the dovetail bar into the clamp at the top of the mount and tighten the hand knob on the bottom of theclamp to secure the telescope in place.9. Locate the erect image diagonal and remove the plastic covers. Insert the barrel of the diagonal into the backof the telescope tube and secure in place by tightening the set screws.10. Insert the barrel of the 25 mm eyepiece into the diagonal and tighten the set screw.11. Loosen the two Phillips head screws on the side of the ﬁnder scope and slide the ﬁnderscope onto themounting dovetail on the top of the telescope tube. The large window on the ﬁnder should be facing the front of the telescope. Secure the bracket by tightening the Phillips head screws on the side of the ﬁnderscope.12. There is a small clear plastic tab inserted between the battery and the contact. This was included to preventthe battery from discharging during shipment. Pull this out to allow your battery to work.13. To install the StarSense phone dock, insert the bayonet mount on the side of the dock into the port on the sideof the mount opposite the dovetail clamp.14. Line up the arrow on the dock with the alignment mark on the mount and press inward while turning the dockcounterclockwise until the orange release button snaps into place in the hole on the dock.15. To remove the dock, press the orange release button and turn the dock clockwise until the bayonet mountreleases.16. Remove the lens cap from the front of the telescope. To observe, look through the eyepiece as shown above.Focus the image by turning the knob below the eyepiece and diagonal.Downloading and Activating the AppBefore you take your telescope outside, download the StarSense Explorer powered by SkySafariTM app to your mobile device. Search for “Celestron StarSense Explorer” in the Apple App Store or Google Play. The app is large, so we recommend downloading it while connected to Wi-Fi.1. Once you have downloaded the app, locate the orange postcard in your telescope box. Launch the app. Whenprompted, enter the activation code on the postcard to activate the app. Your code will unlock up to 5 devices. Moving the Telescope1. The StarSense Explorer DX mount has slip clutches in both axes. To make large movements with thetelescope, simply hold a tripod leg with one hand and use the other hand on the telescope tube to push the telescope in the desired direction.2. To make ﬁ ne adjustments or to track celestial objects, turn both slow motion knobs as required.Aligning the FinderscopeThe ﬁnder is one of the most important parts of your telescope. It helps you locate objects and center them in the eyepiece. The ﬁ rst time you assemble your telescope, you need to align the ﬁnder to the telescope’s main optics. It’s best to do this during the day*.1. CHOOSE A TARGETTake the telescope outside during the day and ﬁ nd an easily recognizable object, such as a streetlight, car license plate or sign. The object should be as far away as possible, but at least a quarter mile away.2. CENTER THE TARGET IN THE EYEPIECE Look through the telescope using your lower powered eyepiece.Move the telescope until the object you chose lies in the center of the view. If the image is blurry, gently turn the focus knob until it comes into sharp focus.NOTE: The image in your telescope may appear inverted. This is perfectly normal in an astronomicaltelescope.*SOLAR WARNING! Never attempt to view the Sun through any telescope without a proper solar ﬁlter!3. LOOK THROUGH FINDERSCOPEOnce the object is centered in your 25 mm eyepiece, look through the ﬁnderscope and locate the red dot. 4. ADJUST THE FINDERSCOPEWithout moving the telescope, use the two adjustment knobs to move the ﬁnder around until the red dot appears over the same object you are observing in the telescope’s 25 mm eyepiece.5. YOUR FINDERSCOPE IS NOW ALIGNED!It should not require realignment unless it is bumped or dropped.Attaching the Smartphone1. Remove the large cap covering the mirror on the front of the StarSense dock.2. Pull open the spring loaded slider on the top of the phone dock and set the phone into the holder so it is ﬂushwith the bottom lip of the phone holder. Slowly release the slider to secure the phone in place. Most phones ﬁt into the dock with the case on. However, you may need to remove your phone case if it is especially bulky or unable to ﬁt into the clamp (i.e. folio style cases).Congratulations! Your telescope is now set up and you are ready to explore the cosmos. The room greatly affects the sound so the position and angle of the speakersrelative to the walls, ceiling and floor is critical in any listening environment.Acoustic axisThe acoustic axis is an imaginary line passingthrough the center point on the speaker andis used for positioning. This point, shown inFigure 3, should be used for measuring thedistance and angle to the listener. The point ispositioned half the distance between theboundary of the tweeter and the boundary ofthe woofer or midrange driver. LYD 5, 7 & 8 are designed to be positioned vertically and pointeddirectly at the listener, while the LYD 48 isdesigned to be used horizontally.Figure 3 : The acoustic axisRoom boundaries Each surface in the room constitutes a boundary for sound; floor, walls, and ceiling. Room boundaries will reflect sound to one degree or another depending on what their surface is made of; hardwood, drywall, carpet etc. Placing speakers very close to any boundary should be avoided. The closer a speaker is to a room boundary, the more anomalies there can be in the low frequency response of the system. Placing a speaker close to more than one boundary (e.g. in a corner) creates even worse problems in many cases.Conversely, placing speakers exactly halfway between room boundaries can over-excite fundamental standing waves in the room, making the bass response less reliable. This also holds true for the listening position. These room anomalies are always present and good placement of the speaker and listener will reduce their effect.A good rule of thumb is to place speakers somewhere between one quarter and one third of the distance between room boundaries as shown in Figure 4. Also, make sure the listening position Figure 5: Speaker angle, 60deg 38%62%is not right in the center of the room if possible. In larger rooms, this is less critical than in small rooms.Sometimes this ideal positioning is not possible. Limitations in space and other equipment or furniture in the room will dictate some aspects of the speaker position. The idea is to do the best you can with the limitations you have.Listening distance The LYD 5,7 & 8 speakers are designed as near field monitors. Near field monitors should be placed relatively close to the listener, between 1 and 2 meters. LYD 48 can be used both as a near or mid field monitor. The ideal listening distance is between 1.5 and 2.5 meters.Speakers on the desk These loudspeakers are designed to work well in a variety of positions, even very close, placed on the work surface in front of you. If they are resting on a desk or console, they may be tilted up to aim at ear level with great results.Speaker stands If you need to place your speakers on stands behind your work surface or computer screens at a greater distance, it is recommended that you use a subwoofer to augment the low frequency response. This will help the speaker system achieve a reasonable volume without overdriving the speakers.Listening angle To begin with, the speakers should be placed so that the drivers are oriented vertically, with the tweeter directly above the woofer. This orientation ensures correct time alignment between the high and low frequencies as they arrive at the listener.Horizontal angle The speakers should be placed so that they create a 60 degree angle between the speakers, as shown in Figure 5. The easiest way to accomplish this without measuring the angle, is to create an equilateral triangle between the speakers and the listener. In other words, the distance between each speaker should equal the distance from each speaker to the listener. The LYD 48 can be positioned with the woofers inside (recommended) or outside, depending on how the equilateral triangle can be achieved best. Make sure to take measurements from the acoustic axis of the speaker.Figure 4: Room diagram, walls, and ceilingAn easy method to do this involves the tape measure and string. With the tape measure, check to see that the speakers are not placed further away than 2 meters for the best response.1. Once you have initially placed the speakers, take the string holding one end at the speaker’s acoustic axis and stretch it out to the listening position.2. Mark this point with a marker.3. Do this again for the other speaker to ensure that they are both the exact same distance from the listener.4. Use the string to measure the distance between each speaker. This should also be the same, forming and equilateral triangle between the two speakers and the listener.5. Make adjustments as necessary to place the listener and speakers at the same distance from each other Vertical angleThe vertical angle of the speakers should orient the loudspeaker directly toward the listener’s ear level. If the speaker is placed higher than the listener, they should be angled downward. Conversely, if the speaker is below the listener’s ear level, they can be angled upward to point at the ear as shown in Figure 6.Dynaudio LYD Series Personal Reference Monitor Connecting the speakers / Adjusting the volumeConnecting the speakers MainsEnsure that you have the correct mains cable foryour region. The power supplies in the loudspeakerhave switching inputs that automatically detectthe incoming voltage and will adjust to either 120Vor 220V, depending on your location.Plug in the provided AC cable to the loudspeakerand then to the outlet. Turn the speaker on toensure that they power up correctly by looking tosee that the power LED is lit on the back panel.Once this is confirmed, turn the speakers offbefore connecting audio signals.Standby modeThe loudspeakers have a standby mode thathelps conserve energy when they are not in use.On – When set to ON, the speakers remainpowered on until the mains switch is turned off.Auto – When set to AUTO, the speakers willautomatically enter a power-saving mode whennot in use that shuts down the amplifier sectionuntil audio is detected at the input.Audio signalsThere are two physical inputs you can choose:• RCA-type unbalanced• XLR balanced or unbalancedThe balanced XLR connection is preferable as itcan reduce noise and hum from the surroundingsbut both connections can provide a high qualityinput signal. Connect the outputs of your mixer,audio interface or monitor controller to theloudspeaker inputs.CautionBefore sending audio to the loudspeakers, setthe sensitivity to -6dB and adjust the outputsof your mixer or audio interface to a low settingand gradually turn up the signal until you geta reasonable volume. This will prevent anyaccidental overload of the loudspeakers.There is a three-position switch that adjusts theinput sensitivity for the loudspeaker.Depending on the output level of your audio mixer,interface, or monitor control system, you canchoose a setting that optimizes the gain staginginto the loudspeaker.• +6dB = 0dBu /.775V max• 0dB = +6dBu /1.5V max• -6dB = +12dBu /3.1V maxIf you are using a professional interface with a maxoutput of +20dBu or more, then a setting of -6dBon the loudspeaker is the most appropriate. If youare using equipment that runs at a consumer ordomestic output level (-10dBV nominal), then the+6dB setting is better.AdjustingthevolumeDynaudio LYD Series Personal Reference Monitor DSP settingsDSPsettingsBass extensionLow frequencies take an exponentially larger amount of energy to reproduce than high frequencies. That is why the bass extension setting affects how loud the speaker will respond.At its lowest setting (-10 Hz), the low frequency range is extended by 10Hz. This will also reduce the maximum volume that the speaker can achieve. The default setting of 0 Hz limits the range of low bass while increasing the maximum volume of the loudspeaker. The +10 Hz setting has the least amount of bass extension but the loudest volume possible from the loudspeaker.• -10 Hz (greatest low frequency extension, -5 dB output)• 0 Hz• +10 Hz (loudest output with least low frequency extension, +5 dB output)As most professional mixers tend to mix at relatively low volumes (~70-85 dB SPL), the greatest amount of bass extension (-10 Hz) can be used. As you increase the playback volume, you may need to reduce the amount of bass extension in order to prevent overdriving the loudspeaker.Dynaudio engineers have painstakingly created a DSP controller for these speakers that lets you tailor the sound to your particular environment. The DSP settings provide precision adjustments that optimize the speakers for the listening space.Sound balanceThe sound balance, or tilt filter, representsa refined way to affect the overall tone of thespeaker. Depending on the room treatmentamong other factors, it may be necessary to makethe loudspeaker darker or brighter than the normalsetting. A dead sounding room with a great dealof treatment might need a brighter setting than alive room with many reflective surfaces.Sound Balance has three settings:• Bright (20 Hz -1,5dB, 20kHz +1,5dB)• Neutral• Dark (20 Hz +1,5dB, 20 kHz -1,5 dB)What this filter actually does is tilt the entirespectrum by 1,5 dB at either end using minimalphase or linear phase filters to either brighten ordarken the overall response. This minimal filteralters the tonality without inducing audible phaseanomalies, thereby maximizing the linearity of theloudspeaker.PositionIf you have positioned your speakers within 50cmof a back wall boundary, the position switch shouldbe placed in the “Wall” setting. This will help withanomalies created by reflections coming off theback wall, especially in the lower frequencies. Ifyour speakers are placed further than 50cm fromany wall surface, use the “Free” setting.Dynaudio LYD Series Personal Reference Monitor Listening tests / Final tweaksListening tests Once you have your speakers properly positioned, its time to start listening to them. Subjective listening tests can be made with reference material that you are familiar with; a favorite album, movie or other recording. Objective tests can be made simply with a smartphone app or more sophisticated acoustic measurement system.Reference materialPlay some recorded material that you are familiar with through the speakers to see if the sound is what you expect. Adjust the tilt filters both directions to hear the different tonalities that are possible. It is also suggested that you listen to material you know actually sounds bad or has defects in the recordings. A truly neutral loudspeaker will reveal these defects clearly.The whole point to a good loudspeaker is to get accurate representation of the sound, good or bad, so that mix decisions can effectively be made. Adjust the tilt filter to the setting you are most comfortable with.Pink noiseFor an objective test of the speaker’s response, you will need a metering system. This consists of a device that can measure the spectral output of the loudspeaker in real time and a source of pink noise that can be played back through the loudspeakers.• RTA Spectral Analyzer• Pink Noise SourceDynaudio has created an iOS app with thesetools built in so you can quickly test and calibrateyour LYD speakers using your iPhone, iPad oriPod touch. In the Apple App Store, search for“Dynaudio Meter” to locate and download thisfree app.You can connect the device directly to thespeakers using a conventional headphone to RCAadapter. Play the pink noise from the DynaudioMeter and adjust the level for a reasonableplayback volume. If you wish to play pink noisefrom your computer workstation, a WAV filecontaining pink noise is available at:/pinknoisePlay the pink noise through one speaker at a timeat a reasonable level (~80-85dBA) and place theiPhone or iPad at the listening position. Changethe Sound Balance filter to see how the responsechanges the response curve in the RTA. Pinknoise is a balanced level of noise across the entirespectrum. In the RTA display, the reading shouldbe as level and even as possible.If you notice excessive levels in the low frequencies,try setting the Sound Balance filter to Bright (B)and check the results. If the spectrum analyzershows a greater degree of high frequencies, setthe tilt filter to dark (D) and check the results.Once you have the tilt filter set for the flattestresponse curve in the RTA, return to yourreference material to see how it sounds. Throughthis process of objective tests with the RTA andsubjective listening tests with you ears, youwill arrive at the best setting for your Dynaudioloudspeakers.Beyond the settings for the loudspeakers, additional tweaks may bedesired to improve the response of the system and room environment.You may discover that a reflective surface is causing a high frequencyanomaly or perhaps room modes are disturbing the bass responsein the room.First reflection treatmentSound reflecting off of hard surfaces that areclose to the listening position can cause problemsin the high frequency response and imaging ofthe loudspeakers. These first reflections can berelatively easy to fix in many cases. Figure 7 showssome common causes of first reflections in atypical control room.Finaltweaksthe mirror when sitting in the listening position.If you can see either loudspeaker in the mirror, itfollows that upper frequencies will bounce off thatsurface directly back to the listening position andpotentially cause response problems.Placing absorptive material on these surfaceswill reduce the effect of first reflections andimprove the sound of the system. The thickeris that for this frequency, the room response willchange dramatically depending on the positionof the listener and the loudspeaker. You may heara more of this frequency or less of it dependingon the listening position in the room. Modescan be formed from all dimensions of the room;length, width, and height. The solution is to placesound absorption designed for low frequenciesin the most effective places to reduce the effectof room modes.Many manufacturers make sound absorptivedevices called bass traps that are designed tobe placed in or near corners and will reduce theamount of reflected low frequency energy in theroom. By dampening the resonance of the modes,the low frequency response of the room may besmoothed out.When placing bass traps, always check theresulting frequency response curve with pinknoise and an RTA to ensure that the loudspeakerresponse is improving. The camera detects the strong spots (the over-exposure portion of image), then reduce the brightness of the strong spots to improve the overall images.●WDR (Wide Dynamic Range)The wide dynamic range (WDR) function helps the camera provide clear images even under back light circumstances. When there are both very bright and very dark areas simultaneously in the field of view, WDR balances the brightness level of the whole image and provide clear images with details.●HLS (Highlight Suppression)It is the same visual effect as the solar eclipse. If the brightness of a part in the image exceeds the threshold, this part will become black. Then whole image can be clear.AGC (Auto Gain Control)It optimizes the clarity of the image in poor light conditions. The AGC level can be set to HIGH, MEDIUM, or LOW.Note:The noise will be amplified when setting the AGC level. SLOW SHUTTERSLOW SHUTTER increases the exposure time on a single frame, which makes a camera more sensitive to the light so it can produce images even in low lux conditions.ANTI-BANDINGANTI-BANDING is a camera setting that prevents the appearance of horizontal lines (banding) when photographing images in the low frequency light and high brightness environments.3.3VIDEO SETTINGSMove the cursor to VIDEO SETTINGS and click Iris+ to enter the submenu. Emergency Stop

Operator Instructions 5 1 Emergency Stop

CAUTION The emergency stop buttons are intended for use in emergency situations only and should not be used for normal system shut down. Repeated misuse of the emergency stop buttons will eventually cause damage to certain components or the loss of data or both.

An emergency stop button is used to quickly shut down power to the Medalist 5DX. The Medalist 5DX is equipped with two emergency stop buttons located on either side of the Medalist 5DX main cabinet, centered above the outer barrier panels. Whenever one of the emergency stop buttons is pressed, all power is immediately removed from the Medalist 5DX subsystems, with the exception of the system controller and the monitor. Call a service technician to restart the system after an emergency button has been pressed.

Push down on one of the emergency stop buttons in an emergency situation.

The emergency stop button locks OFF when pushed. 6 Operator Instructions

8 Hardware Overview

Operator Instructions 7 System Light Tower The system light tower is permanently attached to the electronics cabinet. The system light tower is used to visually indicate the operating condition of the Medalist 5DX.

Operator Control Panel The operator control panel provides an X-ray Control key and X-ray control buttons as well as status LEDs (see Figure 3). It is attached to the keyboard tray.

Operator Instructions 9 3 Operator Instructions Startup the System The Medalist 5DX is operated through the use of a user interface running on the system controller. Before starting the system software, verify that the X-ray has been enabled.

Verify the Safety Interlocks are Closed On the operator control panel (see Figure 3) verify that the Safety Interlocks green LED is lit. If it is not, call a service technician to resolve the problem.

Verify the X-Ray Has Been Enabled On the operator control panel (see Figure 3) verify that the X-ray Control key is in the enabled position (1) and press the X-ray Control enable button (1). Verify that the X-rays red LED is lit.

Log on to Microsoft Windows XP Log on to Microsoft Windows using the Windows user name and password provided by your administrator. When you log on, the Medalist 5DX software starts automatically.

Log on to the Medalist 5DX User Interface Log on to the Medalist 5DX user interface using the user name provided by your administrator. Press the ‘Enter’ key to Login.
