Thanksgiving Day is the most truly American of the national holidays in the United States and is most closely connected with the earliest history of the country. In 1620,some Pilgrims(英国清教徒)sailed to America on the MayFlower, seeking a place where they could have religious freedom. After a difficult two-month voyage they landed at what is now Plymouth,Massachusetts,in icy November.During their first winter, over half of the settlers died of starvation or illness. Those who survived began sowing in the first spring. All summer long they waited for the harvest with great anxiety, knowing that their lives and the future existence of the colony depended on the coming harvest. Finally the fields produced a rich yield beyond expectations. And therefore it was decided that a day of thanksgiving to the Lord(基督教中指上帝)be fixed.Years later,President of the United States proclaimed the fourth Thursday of November as Thanksgiving Day every year. The celebration of Thanksgiving Day has been observed on that date until today. The pattern of the Thanksgiving celebration has never changed through the years. The big family dinner is planned months ahead. On the dinner table, people will find apples, oranges, chestnuts, walnuts and grapes. There will be plum pudding, mince pie, other varieties of food and cranberry juice and squash. The best and most attractive among them are roast turkey and pumpkin pie. They have been the most traditional and favorite food on Thanksgiving Day throughout the years.Thanksgiving today is,in every sense,a national annual holiday on which Americans of all faiths and backgrounds join in to express their thanks.【词海拾贝】1.sowing vt.& vi. 1.Why did the Pilgrims hold a day of thanksgiving?_______________________________________________________答案:They held a day of thanksgiving to celebrate the harvest and give thanks to the Lord.2.What are the most traditional and popular food on Thanksgiving Day?_______________________________________________________答案:Roast turkey and pumpkin pie.Ⅰ. 欺骗;诈骗2.________ n.诗人3.________ n. 独立;自主→________adj. 独立的;自主的5.________ n.农业;农艺;农学→________adj. 农业的;农艺的6.________ n. 奖;奖品vt.授予;判定7.________ adj. 衣服9.________ n. 1.__________:to cause a person or an animal to suffer or die from hunger 2.__________: the place or situation in which something begins to exist 3.__________: a member of your family who lived a long time ago4.__________: to have a very high opinion of someone5.__________: an idea that you believe to be true6.__________: to get something important or valuable7.__________: to come together;to search for things of the same kind and collect them8.__________: to put clothes on yourself or someone else答案:1.starve 2.origin 3.ancestor 4.admire 5.belief6.gain 7.gather 8.dressⅣ.选用短语的适当形式完成句子take place;play a trick on;dress up;look forward to;have fun with;as though;day and night;in memory of1.The Olympic Games________every four years.答案:take place2.A museum was built________________the victims(受害者)in the big earthquake.答案:in memory of3.It's acceptable to________________your English teacher on April 1st.答案:play a trick on4.On the weekends,I like to get together and____________my good friends.答案:have fun with5.In the past, poor workers worked__________________,but they still lived a sad life.答案:day and night6.They talked________they had been friends for a long time.答案:as thoughⅤ. 1.Festivals and celebrations of all kinds have_been_held everywhere_since ancient times._______________________________________________________答案:自古以来,世界各地就有各种各样的节日和庆典。

Everyone knows that death is natural, but do you have any idea of the process of dying? Modern scientists divide the process of dying into two stages —clinical or temporary death and biological death. Clinical death occurs when the vital organs, such as the heart or lungs, have stopped functioning, but have not suffered permanent damage. The organism can still be saved. Biological death occurs when changes in the organism lead to the “breaking up” of vital cells and tissues. Death is then unchangeable and final.Scientists have been seeking a way to prolong the period of clinical death so that the organism can remain alive before biological death occurs. The best method developed so far involves cooling the organism, combined with narcotic (麻醉) sleep. By slowing down the body’s metabolism (新陈代谢), cooling delays the processes leading to biological death. To show how this works, scientists performed an experiment on a six-year-old female monkey called Keta. The scientist put Keta to sleep with a narcotic. Then they surrounded her body with ice-bags and began checking her body temperature. When it had dropped to 28 degrees the scientists began taking blood out from an artery (动脉). The monkey’s blood pressure decreased and an hour later both the heart and breathing stopped: clinical death set in. For twenty minutes Keta remained in this state. Her temperature dropped to 22 degrees. At this point the scientists pumped blood into an artery in the direction of the heart and started artificial breathing. After two minutes Keta’s heart became active once more. After fifteen minutes, spontaneous (自发的) breathing began, and after four hours Keta opened her eyes and lifted her head. After six hours, when the scientists tried to give her a penicillin (青霉素) injection, Keta seized the syringe (注射器)and ran with it around the room. Her behavior differed little from that of a healthy animal.1.For a person who suffers from the clinical death _________.A. he is still very much aliveB. he cannot avoid final deathC. his most important organs are damaged foreverD. he still has the possibility of getting back to life2.Scientists try to make the time of clinical death longer in order to _________.A. cool the organismB. delay the coming of biological deathC. slow down the body’s metabolismD. bring vital cells and tissues back to active life3.The text mainly talks about _________.A. clinical death and biological deathB.an experiment on a monkeyC. the meaning of deathD. the process before death4.From the underlined sentence in the last paragraph we can know that _________.A. Keta was impoliteB. Keta was healthyC. Keta was illD.

On the first night of Hanukkah the first candle is lit, and each day this candle is used to light another candle, until on the eighth day, the last day, all the candles are lit. During Hanukkah, people go to the synagogue (犹太教堂) to pray and to remember the miracle (奇迹) of the holy oil. Hanukkah is a time for family and friends to come together. Unit 1 Festivals around the world(人教新课标必修3)语篇训练卷(二)Unit 1Learning about LanguageⅠ. ABoxing Day is on December 26th, the day after Christmas, and is celebrated in Great Britain and in most areas settled bythe British except for the United States of America, including Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.Despite(尽管)its name, Boxing Day has nothing to do with competition sports. While the exact origins of the holiday are unclear, it is likely that Boxing Day began in England during the Middle Ages. Some historians say the holiday developed because servants(仆人)were asked to work on Christmas Day, but took the following day off. As servants prepared to leave to visit their families, their employers(雇主)would present them with gift boxes. Another theory is that the Alms boxes in churches were opened and the money was given to the poor on December 26th. Still some believe that, centuries ago, on the day after Christmas, members of the merchant(商业)class would give boxes containing food and fruit, clothing, and money to businessmen and servants. The gifts were an expression of thankfulness, much like today when people receivebonuses(奖金)from their employers because of a well-done job. These gifts, given in boxes, gave the holiday its name, “Boxing Day”.Traditionally, Boxing Day is a day when families get together. It is a day of watching sports games with family. In the past, hunting was one of the favorite activities on this day. People usually went hunting for wrens or foxes. Today, Boxing Day is spent with family and friends with lots of food and shari ng of friendship and love. Government buildings and small businesses are closed but the malls are open. Shopping is a popular Boxing Day activity, and the malls are usually filled with bargains. Besides these activities, many businesses, organizations, and families try to keep the traditional spirit of Boxing Day alive by donating their time, services, and money to aid Food Banks, providing gifts for the poor, or helping an individual family that is in need. Boxing Day has mainly become an extension of the Christmas holiday, giving working families one more day as the happy time of a year.1. On Boxing Day servants probably.A. took part in competition sportsB. still had to work for employersC. were allowed to visit their familiesD. were given Alms boxes by employers2. Members of the merchant class gave gift boxes to businessmen and servants to.A. show care and kindness to themB. thank them for doing a good jobC. provide them with enough moneyD. pass on the traditional love and spirit3. What does the third paragraph mainly discuss?A. The beginning of Boxing Day.B. The hunting on Boxing Day.C. The good spirit of Boxing Day.D. The activities on Boxing Day.4. Why is shopping popular on Boxing Day?A. Because it is a kind of traditional activity.B. Because only malls are open on that day.C. Because things can be bought at a low price.D. Because people buy things to donate to the poor.BWhat will you do if you can’t eat everything bought in the canteen? Most of us would simply throw away any leftover food. According to a survey, what students waste every year couldfeed over 10 million people. But canteen waste is merely the tip of the iceberg. According to Xinhua News Agency, the food wasted by Chinese people is about 50 million tons of grain every year, which could feed 200 millionpeople. If that wasn’t bad enough already, numbers around the world are even uglier(触目惊心).Food waste, which has become a global issue, serves as a mirror that reflects various cultural and social issues in different countries. In the West, for instance, consumerism, the belief that it’s good to use a lot of goods and services, is often to blame for food waste. China, in turn, features its own eating culture. Chinese people are well known for being hospitable and generous. Many even feel that they lose face if their guests have eaten all the food. But rather than tradition, huge public spending on government banquets is also fuelling food waste. On campus, a generation of single children is less aware of the food waste issue. Students nowadays are well protected by their families and hardly have any concept of how much toil(辛苦)others go through in order to provide them with the food they eat.To reduce food waste is a big task, and it needs time. There are 925 million hungry people in the world. They don’t have enough food to eat. And farmers work very hard to grow the crops. So we shouldn’t waste our food. It is also important that everyone thinks about how they can do their bit to reduce food waste. A.given up B.brought up C.taken off D.set free 解析:give up放弃;bring up养大,教育;take off脱下;set free释放;根据本句的意思“公园里猴子太多了,以至于有一些被放进山里”可知答案为“set free”。 答案:D 2.—Is your father still an engineer? —______. A.Yes,he was B.He did not use to C.Yes,but he used to D.No,but he used to be 解析:回答一般疑问句时,时态和助动词/系动词要和问句一致;肯定或否定回答也要从形式上一致 (Yes+肯定句;No+否定句)。 答案:D 3.—What do you think of his suggestions? —______,but I have to give a second thought.
