Unit 2 What is happiness to you?能力提升题组训练Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2018广州高三调研) Paloma sat at a computer in the school library. She stared at the blank screen and the blinking cursor. She rummaged around in her backpack for a rubber band, and then she pulled her hair into a thick ponytail.Paloma looked at the computer screen. It was still blank. She sighed and flipped through her notebook to reread the assignment Mr.Molina had given the class three weeks ago.It was due in just two days, and Paloma knew that she couldn’t procrastinate any longer.Write a creative short story using an experience that you have had recently, Paloma read.Your story should include two examples of figurative language.Paloma and her family had recently taken a trip along North Carolina’s coast. They had visited four different lighthouses, and Paloma wondered what it would be like to live in a lighthouse. She knew that before lighthouses were automated, they were run by a lighthouse keeper who lived on the premises.Paloma thought she’d love to be a lighthouse keeper.Without thinking about it any longer,Paloma began to write the story.I sat with my cat Sadie curled on my lap and looked out the window at the crashing waves. The heavy rain beat against my lighthouse like a thousand footsteps racing up and down the walls.I held Sadie closer, and she let out a small meow of displeasure.I knew that the coming storm could not be too dangerous if Sadie was still acting normally.I had read that animals can sense changes in weather and will seek shelter from a tornado or hurricane.I was relying on Sadie’s calmness to get me through my first hurricane on the island.I knew that my lighthouse was sturdily built. It had survived more than one hundred years’ worth of hurricanes and tropical storms. There was no reason to believe that it couldn’t survive another.I looked up at the staircase that spiraled above me and worried as I felt the tower sway slightly in a gust ofwind.Paloma stopped and reread what she had just written. She smiled to herself in delight, saved her story, and then settled into her chair to continue writing. She wasn’t sure what was going to happen next, but she knew that if she kept going, the story would continue to tell itself.Paloma couldn’t wait to find out where it would take her.1.Why is Paloma feeling anxious at the beginning of the passage?A.She hasn’t much time left to do her writing task.B.She doesn’t know the details of her writing task.C.She has completely forgotten about her writing task.D.She doesn’t know what is wrong with her computer.2.What is the inspiration for Paloma’s story idea?A.Her cat.B.Her teacher.C.Her trip.D.Her dream.3.In Paloma’s story, how does the lighthouse keeper decide if the storm is dangerous?A.By listening to the weather report.B.By watching the crashing waves.C.By observing the cat’s behaviour.D.By measuring the movement of the lighthouse.4.As described in the final paragraph, how does Paloma feel after she has written the first part of her story?A.Confused.B.Excited.C.Relieved.D.Determined.语篇解读:本文是一篇记叙文,讲述了Paloma因完成不了写作任务而苦恼时,她和家人的一次旅行给了她灵感。

Unit 2 Sports events能力提升题组训练(A)Ⅰ.阅读理解(2018福州八县高三联考) If a city wants to hold the Olympics,it must submit a proposal to the IOC.After all proposals have been submitted, the IOC votes. If no city with the fewest votes is eliminated (淘汰),the voting continues, until a majority winner is determined. Typically, the Games are awarded several years in advance, allowing the winning city time to prepare for the Games. In selecting the site of the Olympic Games, the IOC considers a number of factors, and chiefly among them is which organizing committee seems most likely to stage the Games effectively. The IOC also considers which parts of the world have not yet hosted the Games. For instance,Tokyo, the host of the 1964 Summer Games, and Beijing, that of the 2008 Games, were chosen in part to popularize the Olympic movement in Asia.Because of the growing importance of television worldwide, the IOC in recent years has also taken into account the host city’ s time zone.Whenever the Games take place in the USA or Canada, for example,American television networks are willing to pay specially higher amounts for television rights because they can broadcast popular events live in the best viewing hours.Once the Games have been awarded,it is the duty of the local organizing committee —not the IOC or the NOC of the host city’s country to provide them with money. This is often done with a part of the Olympic television revenues (收入),and corporate sponsorships, tickets sales, and other smaller revenue sources. In many cases there is also direct government support.Although many cities have gained amounts of money by hosting the Games, the Olympics can be financially risky. If the financial gains from the Games are less than expected, the city will be left with large debts.1. will be determined to host the Olympic Games by the IOC.A.A city that submits a proposalB.A majority winner in votingC.A city that has perfect time zoneD.One that hasn’t hosted the Games2.If the Games take place in Canada,American television networks .A.will not pay for the Canadian television networksB.will be forbidden to broadcast live sporting eventsC.can’t broadcast popular events live in the best viewing hoursD.are willing to pay much higher amounts for television rights3.According to the last paragraph, which following statement is true?A.The host city must be left with large debts.B.There is no financial risk in hosting the Olympic Games.C.The city may gain a lot of money.D.It is impossible that the host city couldn’t make money.4.Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?A.Winner or loserB.Applying for host for the OlympicsC.How to host the Olympic GamesD.The Olympic Games语篇解读:本文是说明文,介绍了申办奥运会的流程。

2020译林版高考英语一轮复习:第一部分 语言知识 必修2 Unit 1 能力提升题组训练(A)
必修2 Unit 1 Tales of the unexplained能力提升题组训练(A)Ⅰ.阅读理解(2018辽宁部分重点高中协作校高三联考) Chilean astronomer Maritza Soto has discovered a planet three times as large as Jupiter orbiting a red giant star larger than the Sun and the planet is located some 290 million light years from the Earth.Soto,a 25-year-old Ph.D.student in sciences at the University of Chile, worked for eight months using two telescopes at the La Silla Observatory, about 370 miles north of st November, she discovered the planet now bearing the designation HD 110014c and her work has now been published in a journal of the London Royal Astronomical Society. The discovery of planets orbiting red giant stars is “rare”,with only five such planets located around stars of that magnitude to date, she told EFE.HD 110014c orbits its star at a distance about six-tenths the distance from the Sun to the Earth—or about the distance between Venus and the Sun.“It’s like imagining a planet three times bigger than Jupiter with the orbit of Venus around the Sun,”she said, adding that the red giant star is about twice the size of the Earth’s Sun.Another planet had already been discovered orbiting the star, and now Soto’s work has added a second planet to that solar system. To find the planet, she used the so-called radial velocity (径向速度) methods of measuring the slight jiggling (晃动) movement of a star as a planet orbits around it considering that the planets themselves send only a very weak signal and are quite difficult to detect on their own.“The planets are very weak compared to the stars and you have to use indirect methods to detect them.I analyzed the data that had been gathered over years to confirm the first planet and I discovered the second one orbiting the star,” she said.1.What can we know about HD 110014c from the passage?A.It’s about three times the size of Jupiter.B.It is the first planet discovered in that solar system.C.Its star is about 290 million light years from the Sun.D.It orbits its star at the distance between the Sun and the Earth.2.Why are planets not easy to discover?A.It takes years to gather data.B.They’re far away from the Earth.C.Their signal is too weak to catch.D.The existing technology is not mature.3.What is the purpose of the passage?A.To describe how to discover a planet.B.To tell an inspiring story of Maritza Soto.C.To inform readers of a new discovery of a planet.D.To stress the importance of discovering a planet.4.Which section of a newspaper is the passage most likely to come from?A.Geography.B.Science.C.Business.D.Environment.语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。

Unit 2 The environment 能力提升题组训练(A) Ⅰ.阅读理解 (2018无锡高三三模) Fed up with constantly having to recharge or replace batteries in your ever-expanding electronic devices? The solution may be just a few steps away. “Energy harvesting” promises to power countless consumer devices, often with nothing more than your body’s movement or heat.Dozens of companies around the world already offer such products, but many experts believe the market for the technology could explode due to electronic devices being developed for the Internet of Things. “It’s huge,” said Graham Martin,CEO of the EnOcean Alliance,a San Ramon-based group of businesses that promotes wireless energy-harvesting technologies. With the Internet of Things expected to combine billions of devices,“if they are all battery-powered,we’ll have a problem because there’s not enough lithium(锂) in the world,” he added.“So a lot of them will have to use energy harvesting.” Among the most basic forms of the technology is body power. When certain materials are squeezed or stretched, the movement of their atoms creates an electrical charge.Automatic watches have employed the concept for decades, for example,by winding themselves when their user moves their arm. Now,the concept is being considered for a number of other devices. In a contest seeking visionary ideas for wearable technologies,Intel awarded $5,000 for a concept to change the temperature difference between a person’s body and a special piece of clothing they’d wear into electricity for mobile devices. Using sound to power devices is another energy-harvesting variation.Stanford University engineers are testing smart microchips that create electricity from ultrasound to power implantable devices that can analyze a person’s nervous system or treat their diseases. A textile research association in Spain is proposing to obtain electricity from radio waves that flow around everyone to power sensors sewn into clothes, which can monitor a person’s heartbeat or other vital signs. Research firm IDTechEx has estimated that annual global sales of energy-harvesting products could hit $2.6 billion by 2024,while WinterGreen Research predicts sales of $4.2 billion by 2019. Obtaining stable energy from devices can be complex, however. For one thing, the motion that generates the electricity has to be constant to be useful. Moreover, the amount of power the devices produce depends on the person using them, according to a Columbia University study. It determined that taller people on average provide about 20 percent more power than shorter ones when walking, running or cycling. It’s also unclear how eagerly consumers might welcome energy-harvesting products. While such devices are expected to cost less than battery-powered alternatives when compared over many years, experts say, people may continue buying ones with batteries merely because those would be cheaper in the short term. 1.Which “explode” in the following sentences has the most similar meaning to the word “explode” in Paragraph 2? A.They were clearing up when the second bomb exploded. B.The continued tension could explode into more violence. C.The population exploded to 5,000 during the last tourist season.
