I would never win an award for my piano playing. And that's just because the more I practiced, the more nervous I got. So there I was, on the stage, in my beautifuldress, and I sat down at the piano. But when I started to play,I hit a wrong note. I told myself to start over. But then I hit the wrong note again. It was as if I hadn't practiced at all. Finally the disaster was over. Encouragement from the audienceCThere is an English saying that “Laughter is the best medicine.” Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects ithas on the human body. They have found that laughter can really improve people's health, can benefit us both physically and psychologically in a great way.Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their hearts, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, makes the heart beat quicker and makes people breathe deeper; it also works on several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effects of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group that tolerated(忍耐)the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny program. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemical in the brain which diminishes both stress and pain.As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they help to improve their patients' condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial(有益的) effects similar to those caused by laughter.7. According to the passage, which of the following statements is WRONG?A. Laughter is good for healthB. Laughter can make you become old quicklyC. Laughter helps to reduce pain.D. Laughter, just like physical exercise, is good for our body.8. The underlined word “diminishes” in the third paragraph means_____.A. delaysB. preventsC. increasesD. reduces9. Why do some doctors hold laughter clinics?A. Because they want to earn more money.B. Because they think they will help the patients recover from illnesses.C. Because they want to improve their patients' condition.D. Because they want their patients to practice how to laugh10.According to the author, we should__________.A. laugh as much as possibleB. watch more funny filmsC. smile all the timeD. spend more time in laughter clinicsDAmerica is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this, which seems uncountable for people in oriental(东方的) cultures. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while — then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily.Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don't show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably. For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!11.The writer of this passage must be ________.A. an AmericanB. a ChineseC. a professorD. a student12.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A. Friendships between Americans usually extend deeply into their families.B. Friendships between Americans usually last for all their lives.C. Americans always show their warmth even if they are very busy.D. Americans will continue their friendships again even after a long break.13.From the last two paragraphs we can learn that when we arrive in America to visit an American friend, we will probably be ________.A. warmly welcomed at the airportB. offered a ride to his homeC. treated hospitably at his homeD. treated to dinner in a restaurant14.The underlined words “generous with our time” in Paragraph 3 probably mean ________.A. strict with timeB. serious with timeC. careful with timeD. willing to spend time15. A suitable title for this passage would probably be “________”.A. Friendships between ChineseB. Friendships between AmericansC. Americans' and Chinese's views of friendshipsD. I only referred to her as “My Aunt Fannie” because the name always made my father laugh quietly and gave my mother cause to look strictly at both of us—at me for being disrespectful of my elder and at my father for encouraging my bad behavior. I enjoyed both reactions so I looked for every opportunity to work thename into as many conversations as possible. As a young woman, my mother had worked in the kitchen of a large Victorian farmhouse. During those years my mother helped Aunt Fanny make the best blueberry jam ever tasted by anyone in Glenfield. She was well-known for her jam and for never sharing the recipe(食谱) with others. Even though my mother knew the recipe by heart, as long as Aunt Fannie was alive, she never made the jam without Aunt Fannie in our kitchen to direct the process and keep the secret. Each August, my mother would prepare me for Aunt Fannie’s visit. One year, after I had helped with the jam process Aunt Fannie gave me a coin and then made me promise that I would never spend it. “Hold onto this coin,” she said, “and someday you will be rich. I still have my very first coin, given to me by my grandmother.” So I kept the coin in a small box and waited to become rich.I now have the blueberry jam recipe and the coin from Aunt Fannie. In people’s eyes Aunt Fannie's success resulted from that secret recipe. But to me, it was just a common recipe. Neither have made me become a rich person, but I keep them as reminders to hold onto the valuable things in life. Money can make you feel rich for a while, but it is the relationships and the memories of time spent with friends and family that truly leave you wealthy. And that is a fortune that anyone can build.4. Why did the author always use the name “My Aunt Fannie” in conversations?A. She was frightened of Aunt Fannie.B. She enjoyed her parents’ reactions.C. She liked Aunt Fannie’s recipe.D. She greatly respected “Aunt Fannie”.5. The underlined word “she” in Paragraph 2 refers to ______.A. Aunt FannieB. the author’s grandmotherC. the author’s motherD. Aunt Fannie’s grandmother6. In the last paragraph, the author encourages readers to______.A. hold onto the first coin in lifeB. make as many friends as possibleC. spend more time with family and friendsD. make money with their own hands7. What could be the best title for this passage?A. The Key to SuccessB. A Fortune Built from a CoinC. Blueberry Jam RecipeD. A Relationship of TrustCIt is widely acknowledged that nearly every kid might come across some kind of school bullying(欺侮), however, the age at which kids were first bullied could influence how strongly they are affected, suggests a new study. And, surprisingly, it is not the youngest kids who are hurt the most in the long term.Bullying can have long-lasting effects, but particularly when it begins in adolescence(青春期), the researchers say. people subjected to either verbal or physical bullying are known to be at greater risk of developing depression, anxiety disorders or to behave violently. But not everyone reacts in this way.Children who were bullied for the first time before they hit adolescence seem to get over it, but those who are bullied for the first time later on in adolescence seem to become more aggressive(富有攻击性的) or are more likely to turn to drinking as a means of coping with it. These are the conclusions of psychologists Matthew Newman and colleagues of Texas at Austin, US.The team gave questionnaires to nearly 1,500 college students about their experience of physical and psychological bullying before adolescence- before high school- and in late adolescence- at high school. They assessed mood and mental state, judging by signs of anxiety or depression, such as sleeplessness. The group was also questioned about how they would react to certain challenges, such as humiliation.People who were bullied all showed slightly higher levels of stress. But while those bullied earlier in life seemed to respond normally to provocation (煽动), people bullied for the first time late in adolescence are more withdrawn and sensitive to violence. There are also sex differences between those bullied for the first time duringadolescence: females are more likely to react aggressively when provoked and males are much more likely to turn to drinking to escape bad situations. The best solutionin all cases was strong social support, whether from friends, family or school. Those with no one to share their problems with suffered the most.So perhaps it is best not to shelter children completely from bullying early on, suggests Newman, “They may get stressed, but unhealthy coping really jumps out when they are bullied for the first time later on.”8. What determines the degree of bullying’s effect on people according to the study?A. The reason why they are bullied.B. The place where they are first bullied.C. The person who first bullies them.D. The age at which they are first bullied.9. What may happen to those first bullied later on in adolescence according to Newman and his colleagues?A. They seem to easily get over the effect of bullying.B. Some are likely to be more aggressive.C. Most of them will respond to bullying normally.D. Most of them are afraid of sharing their problems.10. The sex differences between people bullied for the first time during adolescence are reflected in _______.A. the support they get from the societyB. the effect bullying has on themC. the way they react to provocationD. the type of bullying they receive 第二节阅读补全 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出填入空白处的最佳选项。

This is usually the oppositeof the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Americans will continue their friendships again even after a long break.13.From the last two paragraphs we can learn that when we arrive in America to visitan American friend, we will probably be ________.A. warmly welcomed at the airportB. offered a ride to his homeC. treated hospitably at his homeD. treated to dinner in a restaurant14.The underlined words “generous with our time” in Paragraph 3 probably mean ________.A. strict with timeB. serious with timeC. careful with timeD. willing to spend time15. A suitable title for this passage would probably be “________”.A. Friendships between ChineseB. Friendships between AmericansC. Americans' and Chinese's views of friendshipsD. 第I卷(选择题)第一部分: (共三节,满分50分)第一节阅读理解(共10小题,每小题2分,满分20分)AHundreds of years ago,a Roman army came north from England to make war on Scotland. The Scots,a brave people, loved their country very much. They fought hard to drive the enemy out of Scotland, but there were too many Romans. It looked as if the Romans would win.One night, the leader of Scots marched his soldiers to the top of a hill. "We will rest here tonight,my men,” he said. "Tomorrow we will fight one more battle. We must win or we will die."They were all very tired,so they ate their supper quickly and fell asleep. There were four guards on duty, but they were very tired as well and also fell asleep one by one.The Romans were not asleep. Quickly they gathered at the foot of the hill. Slowly they climbed up the hillside, taking care not to make a sound. Closer and closer they came to the sleeping Scots. They were almost at the top. A few minutes more, the war would be over. Suddenly, one of them put his foot on a thistle(蓟). He cried out and his sudden cry woke the Scots. In a moment, they were on their feet and ready for battle. The fighting was hard but it did not last long. The Scots wiped out the Romans and saved their country. The thistle is not a beautiful plant. It has sharp needles all over it. Few people like it. But the people of Scotland liked it so much that they made it their nationalflower.1. Hundreds of years ago there was a war between ________.A. Roman army and North EnglandB. a brave people and the ScotsC. England and ScotsD. Roman army and the Scots2. The Romans climbed up the hill quietly because ________.A. they wanted to catch the four guards firstB. they didn't want to wake the ScotsC. they wanted to reach the topD. they were afraid of the sharp needles of the thistle3. The people of Scotland made thistle their national flower because ________.A. it is a beautiful plantB. it was the thistle that helped the Scots to win the battleC. it had so many sharp needles all over itD. it is fresh and lovelyBBad news sells. If it bleeds, it leads. No news is good news, and good news is no news. Those are the classic rules for the evening broadcasts and the morning papers. But now that information is being spread and monitored(监控) in different ways, researchers are discovering new rules. By trac king people’s e-mails and online posts, scientists have found that good news can spread faster and farther than disasters and sob stories.“The ‘if it bleeds’ rule works for mass media,” says Jonah Berger, a scholar at the University of Pennsylvania. “They want your eyeballs and don’t care how you’re feeling. But when you share a story with your friends, you care a lot more how they react. You don’t want them to think of you as a Debbie Downer.”Researchers analyzing word-of-mouth communication—e-mails, Web posts and reviews, face-to-face conversations—found that it tended to be more positive than negative(消极的), but that didn’t necessarily mean people preferred positive news. Was positive news shared more often simply because people experienced more good things than bad things? To test for that possibility, Dr. Berger looked at how people spread a particular set of news stories: thousands of articles on The New York Times’ website. He and a colleague analyzed the “most e-mailed” list for six months. One of his first findings was that articles in the science section were much more likely to makethe list than non-science articles. He found that science amazed Times’ readers and made them want to share this positive feeling with others.Readers also tended to share articles that were exciting or funny, or that inspired negative feelings like anger or anxiety, but not articles that left them merely sad. They needed to be aroused(激发) one way or the other, and they preferred good news to bad. The more positive an article, the more likely it was to be shared, as Dr. Berger explains in his new book, “Contagious: Why Things Catch On.”4 .What do the classic rules mentioned in the text apply to?A. Research papers.B. News reports C .Private e-mails. D. Daily conversations.5. What can we infer about people like Debbie Downer?A. They’re socially inactive.B. They’re good at telling stories.C. They’re careful with their words.D. They’re inconsiderate of others.6. Which tended to be the most e-mailed according to Dr. Berger’s research?A. Sports news.B. Personal accounts.C. Sciencearticles. D. Financial reviews.7 .What can be a suitable title for the text?A. Good News Beats Bad on Social NetworksB .Online News Attracts More PeopleC. Reading Habits Change with the TimesD. Sad Stories Travel Far and WideCIn her new book, “The Smartest Kids in the World,” Amanda Ripley, an investigative journalist, tells the story of Tom, a high-school student from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, who decides to spend his senior year in Warsaw, Poland. Poland is a surprising educational success story: in the past decade, the country raised students’ test scores from significantly below average to well above it. Polish kids have now outscored(超过……分数) American kids in math and science, even though Poland spends, on average, less than half as much per student as the United States does. One of the most striking differences between the high school Tom attended in Gettysburg and the one he ends up at in Warsaw is that the latter has no football team, or, forthat matter, teams of any kind. That American high schools waste more time and money on sports than on math is an old complaint. This is not a matter of how any given student who plays sports does in school, but of the culture and its priorities. This December, when the latest Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) results are announced, it’s safe to predict that American high-school students will once again display their limited skills in math and reading, outscored not just by students in Poland but also by students in places like South Korea, Belgium, the Netherlands, Finland, Singapore, and Japan. Meanwhile, they will have played some very exciting football games, which will have been breathlessly written up in their hometown papers. Why does this situation continue? Well, for one thing, kids like it. And for another, according to Ripley, parents seem to like the arrangement, too. She describes a tour she took of a school in Washington D.C., which costs thirty thousand dollars a year. The tour leader—a mother with three children in the school—was asked about the school’s flaws(瑕疵). When she said that the math program was weak, none of the parents taking the tour reacted. When she said that the football program was weak, the parents suddenly became concerned. “Really?” one of them asked worriedly, “What do you mean?”One of the ironies(讽刺) of the situation is that sports reveal what is possible.8. According to Paragraph 2, we know that _______.A. little time is spent on sports in Japanese schoolsB. too much importance is placed on sports in AmericaC. American high schools complain about sports timeD. PISA plays a very important role in America9. The underlined sentence in the last paragraph means _______.A. American students’ academic performance worries their parents a lotB. high expectations push up American students’ academic performanceC. lacking practice contributes to American students’ average performanceD. low expectations result in American students’ poor PISA performance10. The purpose of this article is to _______.A. compare Polish schools with those in AmericaB. call on American schools to learn from the Polish modelC. draw public attention to a weakness in American school traditionD. explain what is wrong with American schools and provide solutions第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AMother Teresa (August 26, 1910-September 5, 1997) was a great woman, who did a lot to improve the social condition of mankind. Due to her contribution in serving the society, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize aged 69.She was brought up in a Catholic family. When she was only seven, she lost her father. Even as a young child, she was interested in the life of missionaries (传教士). At the age of 18, she decided that she would become a nun. She left her home and went to join the Sisters of Loreto. It was the first step that she made towards providing services for mankind. On the 7th of October in the year 1950, Mother Teresa received Vatican permission to start the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, the mission of which would be to take care of the needy, the homeless, and people who were shunned by the society. Then it had a number of branches all over the country. The journey o f Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity started with the setting up of homes for "the Dying".In the year 1983, Mother Teresa suffered from a serious heart attack, while she was in Rome. However, she recovered. But, later in 1989, she again got an attack. Her health went worse and in the year 1991, she suffered from pneumonia. Taking her health problems into consideration, Mother Teresa decided to resign (辞职) from the post of head of the order.A secret vote was conducted in which all the nuns voted for the stay of Mother Teresa except herself. So, she agreed to continue serving as head of the Missionaries of Charity. Day by day her health was getting worse. On September 5, 1997, exactly nine days after her 87th birthday, this great soul departed for heaven.1.Why did Mother Teresa devote her life to the religious life?A.Because her parents had a deep influence on her.B.Because she wanted to provide services for others.C.Because she thought the life of missionaries simple.D.Because she came to know the Sisters of Loreto.2.Which of the following words can replace the underlined word "shunned" ? A trait is how an organism (有机体) looks or acts or what it does. Having brown eyes is a trait. Flying in circles is a trait. Climbing trees is a trait. The earliest forms of genetic engineering occurred on farms. People selected seeds from plants that had more fruit production or tastier leaves than other plants of their types. Then they chose to save the seeds from the best of that group to sow the next year. So, year by year, the farmers produced better and better crops. This type of activity probably has been going on since mankind first settled in villages and began making a life for themselves in one location, about 12,000 years ago!The same sort of thing would have also happened with animals. For example, people chose to eat the animals that didn’t have favorable traits and let the animals with the favorabletraits reproduce. It was thousands of years before mankind figured out how plants and animals reproduce themselves. With this knowledge, people could pollinate (授粉) plants by hand or keep a pair of animals together in order to deliberately cause an increase in afavorable trait. It was only in the last 250 years that scientists began figuring out chromosomes (染色体) and genes and the role they play in the way one generation passes its traits on to the next. And it’s only been in the last 30 years that scientists have been able to cut out specific genes from one organism and put them in another. It is this 30- year-old technology that is described by the narrow definition of genetic engineering. Mankind has long been able to have a deliberate impact on the world around him. He now possesses the tools to deliberately impact himself. Some people are afraid of what might be done with that power. 4.The text is mainly developed by ______.A.asking questionsB.examining differencesC.making comparisonsD.giving examples5.Paragraph 2 mainly talks about ______.A.the spread of genetic engineeringB.the advantage of genetic engineeringC.the original application of genetic engineeringD.the popularity of genetic engineering6.The underlined word “them” in the last paragraph refers to ______.A.specific genes B.special traitsC.chromosomes D.scientists7.What can we learn about genetic engineering from the last paragraph?A.It has a history of 250 years by the narrow definition of genetic engineering. B.Scientists don’t know how to make good use of it.C.People have a misunderstanding of it in the past 30 years.D.It is becoming a powerful tool of mankind.CAmerican high school students are terrible writers, and one education reform group thinks it has an answer: robots. Or, more accurately, robot-readers—computers programmed to scan students’ essays and spit out a grade.Mark Shermis, professor of the College of Education at the University of Akron, is helping to hold a contest, set up by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation (WFHF), which promises $ 100,000 in prize money to programmers who write the best automated grading software. “If you’re a high school teacher and you give a writing task, you’re walking home with 150 essays,” Shermis said. “You’re going to need some help.”Automated essay grading was first proposed in the 1960s, but computers back then were not up to the task. In the late 1990s, as technology improved, several textbooks and testing companies jumped into the field. Today, computers are used to grade essays on South Dakota’s student writing assessments and a handful of other exams, including the TOEFL test of English fluency, taken by foreign students. The Hewlett contest aims to show that computers can grade as well as English teachers—only much more quickly and without all that depressing red ink. “Automated essay scoring is objective,” Shermis said. “And it can be done immediately. If student s finish an essay at 10 pm, they will get a result at 10: 01 pm.”Take, for instance, the Intelligent Essay Assessor, a web-based tool marketed by Pearson Education, Inc. Within seconds, it can analyze an essay for spelling, grammar, organization, and help students to make revisions. The program scans for key words and analyzes semantic (语义的) patterns, and Pearson claims that it can understand the meaning of text much the same as a human reader.8.The text is written to introduce ______.A.education reform in AmericaB.robot-readersC.Hewlett contestD.William and Flora Hewlett Foundation9.From Paragraph 3, we know that in the 1960s ______.A.Computers were not easy to getB.Automated grading software was popularC.Computers couldn’t grade essays automatic allyD.People refused automated essay grading10.The Intelligent Essay Assessor can ______.A.Rewrite essaysB.Underline the mistakes in red inkC.Correct key words and patternsD.Understand the meaning of text第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

With the full package, the programme organizer is supposed to ________.A. inform students of their full flight detailsB. offer students free sightseeing tripsC. collect students’ luggage in advanceD. look after students throughout the programmeBOf course, she wasn't really my aunt and, out of fear, I never called her that to her face. I only referred to her as “My Aunt Fannie” because the name always made my father laugh quietly and gave my mother cause to look strictly at both of us — at me for being disrespectful of my elder and at my father for encouraging my bad behavior.I enjoyed both reactions, so I looked for every opportunity to work the name into as many conversations as possible. As a young woman, my mother had worked in the kitchen of a large Victorian farmhouse. During those years, my mother helped Aunt Fanny make the best blueberry jam ever tasted by anyone in Glenfield. She waswell-known for her jam and for never sharing the recipe with others. Even though my mother knew the recipe by heart, as long as Aunt Fannie was alive, she never made the jam without Aunt Fannie in our kitchen to direct the process and keep the secret. Each August, my mother would prepare me for Aunt Fannie's visit. One year, after I had helped with the jam process, Aunt Fannie gave me a coin and then made me promis e that I would never spend it. “Hold onto this coin," she said, “and someday you will be rich. I still have my very first coin, given to me by my grandmother.” So, I kept the coin in a small box and waited to become rich.I now have the blueberry jam recipe and the coin from Aunt Fannie. In people's eyes Aunt Fannie's successresulted from that secret recipe. Why did the author always use the name “My Aunt F annie" in conversations?A. She liked Aunt Fannie's recipe.B. She was frightened of Aunt Fannie.C. She enjoyed her parents ’reactions.D. She greatly respected “Aunt Fannie".5. The underlined word “she” in Paragraph 2 refers to ________.A. Aunt FannieB. the author's grandmotherC. the author's motherD. Aunt Fannie' s grandmother6. In the last paragraph, the author encourages readers to ________.A. hold onto the first coin in lifeB. make as many friends as possibleC. make money with their own handsD. spend more time with family and friends7. What could be the best title for this passage?A. The Key to SuccessB. Blueberry Jam RecipeC. A Fortune Built from a CoinD. A Relationship of TrustCIt is widely acknowledged that nearly every kid might come across some kind of school bullying(欺侮), however, the age at which kids were first bullied could influence how strongly they are affected, suggests a new study. And, surprisingly, it is not the youngest kids who are hurt the most in the long term.Bullying can have long-lasting effects, but particularly when it begins in adolescence(青春期), the researchers say, people subjected to either verbal or physical bullying are known to be at greater risk of developing depression, anxiety disorders or to behave violently. But not everyone reacts in this way.Children who were bullied for the first time before they hit adolescence seem to get over it, but those who are bullied for the first time later on in adolescence seem to become more aggressive(富有攻击性的) or are more likely to turn to drinking as a means of coping with it. These are the conclusions of psychologists Matthew Newman and colleagues of Texas at Austin, US.The team gave questionnaires to nearly 1,500 college students about their experience of physical and psychological bullying before adolescence-before high school-and in late adolescence-at high school. They assessed mood and mental state, judging by signs of anxiety or depression, such as sleeplessness. The group was also questioned about how they would react to certain challenges, such as humiliation.People who were bullied all showed slightly higher levels of stress. But while those bullied earlier in life seemed to respond normally to provocation(煽动), people bullied for the first time late in adolescence are more withdrawn and sensitive to violence. There are also sex differences between those bullied for the first time during adolescence: females are more likely to react aggressively when provoked and males are much more likely to turn to drinking to escape bad situations. The best solution in all cases was strong social support, whether from friends, family or school. Those with no one to share their problems with suffered the most.So perhaps it is best not to shelter children completely from bullyi ng early on, suggests Newman, “They may get stressed, but unhealthy coping really jumps out when they are bullied for the first time later on.”8. What determines the degree of bullying’s effect on people according to the study?A. The reason why they are bullied.B. The place where they are first bullied.C. The person who first bullies them.D. As a Fulbright(富布莱特法案基金)scholar at Yale, I wanted very much to get some individual help from some famous professors, but their office-hours were only once a week and there were always students waiting outside. At first, I was too polite to get their help. Then I realized that Chinese politeness does not work in this society. I needed to be aggressive to get what I wanted. I also noticed that Chinese students or Asian students were very polite in class while American students often interrupted the professor, asking questions and dominating the discussion. The Chinese students were not as aggressive as American students. I was impressed by the role of the professor in the class. The professor didn’t act as an authority, giving final conclusions, but as a researcher looking for answers to questions together with the students. One linguistic feature of his interacting with his students was that he used many modal verbs-far more than I did in Beiwai. When answering questions, he usually said: “this is my personal opinion and it could be wrong. It would be a good idea if you could read the book I mentioned the other day.” Or,“ You may find the book I recommended helpful.” Or,“You could be right, but you might find this point of view also interesting.” When making comments on students’ performances, the professor usually said:” It might have been much clearer if you had taken in some of the ideas we discussed earlier this semester.” In China, authorities are always supposed to give wise decisions and correct directions. Therefore students always expect the professor to give an answer to the question. I still remember how annoyed they were when foreign teachers did not provide such an answer. Their expectations from authorities are much higher than those of American students. Once the Chinese students got the answer, they were sure about it. That is why they make far more certain statement than American students. That is why Chinese students find it difficult to use modal verbs because the function of modal verbs is to provide room for negotiation and different ideas. 1. The American professors use many modal verbs because they want to______. A. argue with their students B. be more sure about their answers C. express their ideas more clearly D. develop their students’ own way of thinking 2. Which of the following statements best expresses the author’s idea? A. Chinese professors can always give correct answer to the question. B. American professors are not responsible since they don’t give students answers. C. American education produces aggressive students. D. Education in China is not helpful in developing students’ creativity. 3. Which of the following methods did the author mainly employ in developing the article? A. Comparison and contrast. B. Cause and effect. C. Giving examples. D. Description. 4. What is the author’s attitude towards education in U.S.? A. Positive B. Negative C. Neutral D. Unsure B So long as teachers fail to distinguish between teaching and learning, they will continue to undertake to do for what only children can do for themselves. Teaching children to read is not passing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas insists that "reading cannot be taught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible." Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to devise the most efficient system for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also a public activity: It can be seen and observed. Learning to read involves all that each individual does not make sense of the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is not open to public scrutiny. If teacher and learner roles are not interchangeable, what then can be done through teaching will aid the child in knowledge. Smith has one principal rule for all teaching instructions. "Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children." When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, and when both teacher and learner fulfill them appropriately, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is eliminated. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem of learning to read by reading. 5. The problem with the reading course as mentioned in the first paragraph is that____. A. it is one of the most difficult school courses B. students spend endless hours in reading C. reading tasks are assigned with little guidance D. too much time is spent in teaching of reading 6. The word "scrutiny"(Para.3)most probably means____. A. inquiry B. observation C. control D. suspect 7. The main idea of the passage is that ____. A. teachers should do as little as possible in helping students learn to read B. teachers should encourage students to read as widely as possible C. reading ability is something acquired rather than taught D. reading is more complicated than generally believed C Being sociable looks like a good way to add years to your life. Relationships with family, friends, neighbors, even pets, will all help, but the biggest longevity (长寿) seems to come from marriage. The effect was first noticed in 1858 by William Farr, who wrote that widows and widowers (鳏夫) were at a much higher risk of dying than the married people. Studies since then suggest that marriage could add as much as seven years to a man’s life and two to a woman’s. The effect can be seen in all causes of death, whether illness, accident or self-harm.
