This park in the southeastern part of the state covers morethan 1 million hectares of Alaskan wilderness. It includes mountains, glaciers (冰川), bays, and even rainforests. Glacier Bay supports hundreds of kinds of animals, including many species of birds, fish, bears, whales and sea lions. As its name suggests, much of Glacier Bay National Park is covered by glaciers. A glacier is a large area of ice that moves slowly down a slope (斜坡) or valley, or over a wide area of land. Glaciers cover more than 5,000 square kilometers of the park.Glacial ice has shaped the land over the last seven million years. The glaciers found in the park today are what remains from an ice advance known as the Little Ice Age. That period began about 4,000 years ago.During the Little Ice Age, the cold weather caused the ice to grow and advance. That situation continued until about 1,700s, when the climate began to warm. The higher temperatures caused the ice to start melting. That melting led the huge glacier to separate into more than 1,000 different glaciers. The extremely tall and jagged (参差不齐的) mountains seen in Glacier Bay National Park were formed by the ice advancing and then melting over time. The melting of the ice also created water that filled in and created the many fjords (峡湾) within the park. Fjords are narrow parts of the ocean that sit between cliffs or mountains. The huge amount of water from the melted ice killed off many kinds of plants. Vegetation returned to the area over the next 200 years. The regrowth in plants also brought back many animals to the land. This return of life to Glacier Bay is why it is sometimes called “a land reborn” by people.9. What is mentioned in Paragraph 1?A. The function of Glacier Bay.B. The climate of Glacier Bay.C. The area of Alaskan wilderness.D. The number of animals in Glacier Bay.10. What happened to Glacier Bay during the Little Ice Age?A. Many slopes or valleys came into being.B. The glaciers grew and advanced.C. Different glaciers became a whole one.D. The fjords became narrow.11. What is mainly discussed in the last paragraph?A. How the water killed off the plants.B. When vegetation returned to Glacier Bay.C. What the relationship between plants and animals is.D. Why Glacier Bay is sometimes called “a land reborn”.4.Cancer is a leading cause of death around the world. When it comes to cancer, the sooner you know you have it, the better your chances of surviving are.A new blood test could change the way doctors and researchers find cancer in patients. Researchers say the test could provide some hints of the early forms of the disease.Gareth Jenkins is a professor at the University of Swansea. He says he and his team did not look for cancer. They instead looked for a by-product of cancer, mutated (突变的) red blood cells. They looked for, what Jenkins calls, the collateral (附带的) damage of cancer—the damage left by the disease.“In this blood test we don’t measure the presence of cancer,we measure the presence of mutated red blood cells which are the collateral damage that occurs—a by-product of the cancer developing.’’The researchers used normal laboratory equipment to perform the tests. This equipment looks for changes in the structure of millions of red blood cells. Those mutated cells lack a surface protein (蛋白质) that healthy cellsnormally have.“The goal of the test is looking for very rare cells which have picked up a mutation. The number of mutated red blood cells in a healthy person is around 5 or so mutated cells per million; so, you have to look at millions of red blood cells to discover those rare events. The number increases in cancer patients—it goes up to 40 or 50 on average.”The researchers tested blood from about 300 people, all of whom have cancer of the esophagus (食管). Patients with esophageal cancer have high levels of mutated red blood cells. Jenkins says that at this point he is not sure if other cancers would produce similar results. The hope is that the new test could one day become part of commonly used medical methods to find out if a person has cancer. These new technologies could save millions of lives.12. What does the underlined word “hints” probably mean in Paragraph 3?A. Deaths.B. Experiences.C. Signs.D. Kinds.13. Healthy people and patients with esophageal cancer are different in of mutated red blood cells.A. the sizeB. the colorC. the shapeD. the number14. What’s the author’s attitude to the new test?A. Negative.B. Indifferent.C. Positive.D. Doubtful.15. What can be the best title for the text?A. Cancer Can Be PreventedB. New Test Could Find Cancer EarlierC. Scientists Have Discovered How Cancer SpreadsD. New Cancer Treatment Is Showing Extraordinary Results二、未分类(共2题)1.How to Form a HabitThere are so many things we do in our daily lives that have become a “habit”. 16 How you answer the phone is a habit. The way you sit in the car when you drive is a habit. Have you ever tried to change the way you do something, after you’ve done it in a certain way for so long? It’s easy to do as long as you think about it. The minute your mind drifts to something else, you go right back to the old way of doing things. 17 It’s a way of doing things that has become routine or commonplace. To change an existing habit or form a new one can be a boring task.Let’s pick something fairly easy to start with, like sp ending 15 minutes in the morning reading the Bible. If you want to turn something into a habit that you do every day, you have to WANT to do it. 18 Make a firm decision to do this on a daily basis.Impress it on your mind. Write several notes to yourself and put them in places where you will see them. By the alarm clock, on the bathroom mirror, on the refrigerator door, in your briefcase, and under your car keys are good places to start. After the newness wears off, then you will have to remind yourself, “Hey, I forgot to...”. Keep using the notes if you have to. 19 Some people say it will take over a month to solidify (变得稳固) it and make it something you will do without having to think about it. I tend to agree with the last statement. Two to three weeks will help you to remember, but thirty days or more will make it a part of your everyday routine. 20A. What is a “habit” anyway?B. Forming a bad habit is easy.C. Brushing your teeth is a habit.D. Is doing things in an old way good?E. If you don’t, you will find a way to do everything but that.F. It takes 16 to 21 times of repeating a task to make it a habit.G. That’s something you won’t necessarily have to think about before you do it—habit.2.While I was in Ojai this past weekend, I came across a man 41 (sit) ata bench by himself. Not knowing how much money I had, I told him I’d give him whatever was in my purse. He said he prayed that I’d have $47. Then I opened the wallet in my purse and counted out the money. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of a lot of clothes that wouldn’t fit .I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model, I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid, The set worked so beautifully when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night, Fortunately, I didn’t got any channels showing all -night movies or I would never have gotten to bed. Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static (静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. HumorousYour house may have an effect on your figure. Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of your diet plan.Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less self-conscious (难为情) when they’re in poorly litplaces —and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us feel less hun gry. So when it’s time to repaint, go blue.Don’t forget the clock—or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories (卡路里) per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you’re at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a largespoon over a smaller one, total intake (摄入) jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.5.The text is especially helpful for those who care about ____________. A. their home comforts B. their body shape C. house buying D. healthy diets6.A home environment in blue can help people ______________. A. digest food better B. reduce food intake C. burn more calories D. regain their appetites 7.What are people advised to do at mealtimes? A. Eat quickly. B. Play fast music.C. Use smaller spoons.D. Turn down the lights. 8.What can be a suitable title for the text?A. Is Your House Making You Fat?B. Ways of Serving DinnerC. Effects of Self-ConsciousnessD. Cheating is a major concern in all academic environments. Students are creating new and more outrageous(令人吃惊的)ways of cheating every day: some claim that certain accounts of cheating can be justified, but overall it can always be prevented.Cheating has been around forever, and millions of ways to cheat have been fashioned. Copying homework and cheat sheets are some of the most basic ways students in all education levels have cheated. Some students think nothing about writing a few answers on their hand, in a gum wrapper, or boldly using a study guide to cheat. Desperate students have even gone as far as to steal the test or scan in bottle wrappers and put answers into the nutrition label. The internet has now become available in almost every location. Computers can be accessed at school, at home, and now even on cell phones. This opens a doorway for even more methods of cheating to be born. There are countless opinions on whether or not cheating can be justified. The truth is this behavior will always be a matter of opinion with each scenario ofIt may be difficult to accomplish, hut cheating can be prevented. 1'eachers and professors have tried many options to stop cheating. These options can range anywhere from simply spreading test-takers out in a room, to expelling(驱逐)a student, which will most likely hinder their plans of getting into another college. One simple way to fix the problem is to scold the student when caught. They may be so scared or embarrassed that they never do it again. This is a risky way to prevent cheating in some cases, however, because it can possibly damage self-esteem. Another simple way 10avoid cheating is to create many different kinds of the same test. This prohibits students from getting the answers off of a neighbor's test, but students still have the option of using other cheating tactics. There may be a million ways to cheat and get away with it, but there are few试卷第6页,总10页times, if any, that it is justified. Cheating never has to be a necessity and is never worth compromising morals and losing years worth of working towards a degree. This problem is spreading throughout America; with everyone's help, it can be stopped.16.Which is the best title of this passage?A. To cheat or not to cheatB. Show your opinion on cheatingC.

ANeil Jordan, a conservation biologist, has come up with a novel method for protecting cattle from African lions: paint eyes on their behinds. The lions will think their inten ded prey has seen them and will give up, since they’ve lost the element of surprise. This psychological trickery has been called “iCow”, which is actually not asstrange as it sounds. The eye-like patterns on butterfly wings are known to prevent preying birds and woodcutters in Indian forests wear masks on the backs of their heads when working to discourage hungry tigers. The inspiration for the iCow strategy came while Jordan was based in a village in Botswana, when two lionesses were killed by local farme rs to revenge their cattle’s death. The African lion is a vulnerable species, with numbers dropping from over 100,000 in the 1990s to about 30,000 today. Much of that decline is due to these kinds of revengeful killings because farmers have no effective strategies for protecting their herds.“Lions are hunters that like to attack by surprise. They move slowly, quietly and carefully to their prey, get close and jump on them unseen,” he said. When Jordan was watching a lion follow an antelope one day, he noticed the lion gave up the hunt once the antelope spotted it.So he joined one of the local farmers on a 10-week trial study, painting eyes on one-third of a herd of 62 cattle. When the cattle returned each night, they took a head count to see how many had survived. Only three cows were killed by lions during this period-all without the painted eyes on their behinds. And all the painted cows survived. However, Jordan warned that so far this is just a promising idea. He is now back in Botswana for a more ambitious study, armed with GPS devices to better monitor the movement of predators and prey.21. The iCow strategy is designed to .A. kill the lionsB. warn the preys of dangerC. identify the cattleD. scare off animals that kill22. When hunting, lions like to .A. give up halfwayB. hesitate to take actionC. chase their prey steadilyD. launch surprising attacks23. What can be inferred from the passage?A. The iCow strategy is likely to bring great benefit.B. In the 10-week trial study more cattle were killed.C. The farmers will take their revenge on more lions.D. Neil got inspiration from patterns on butterfly wings.BConformity involves changing your behaviour to “fit in” or “go along” with the people around you. In some cases, this social influence might involve agreeing with or acting like the majority of people in a specific group, or involve behaving in a particular way to be viewed as “normal” by the group. Actually, conformity is something that happens re gularly in our social world. Sometimes we’re aware of our behaviour, but in many cases it happens without much thought or awareness on our parts. And even in some cases we go along with things we disagree with or behave in ways we know we shouldn’t.There are countless examples of conformity in life. For instance, a teenager dresses in a certain style because he wants to fit in with the rest of the teenagers in his social group. A woman reads a book for her book club and really enjoys it. When she attends her book club meeting, the other members all dislike the book. Rather than go against the group opinion, she simply agrees with the others that the book is terrible. Why do we conform? In many cases, looking to the rest of the group for clues for how we should behave can actually be helpful. Others might have greater knowledge or experience than we do, so following their lead can actually be instructive. And in some cases, we conform to the expectations of the group to avoid looking foolish. This tendency ca n become especially strong in situations where we aren’t quite sure how to act. Additionally, there are some situations where we conform just in order to avoid punishments or gain rewards. There are many factors that influence conformity. For example, not knowing how to perform a difficult task makes people more likely to conform. Personal characteristics such as motivation to achieve and strong leadership abilities are linked with a decreased tendency to conform. And people are more likely to conform in situations that involve between three and five other people.24. What can we learn about conformity from the first paragraph?A. Actually it is rare for us to conform.B. Blind conformity should be criticized.C. Sometimes people tend to conform unconsciously.D. Conformity means changing your behaviour reluctantly.25. Which of the following is a case of conformity?A. Joining a certain organization.B. Following the ongoing fashion.C. Sharing something personal with others.D. Giving up your creative ideas cautiously.26. When are we most likely to conform according to the text?A. When we are at a loss.B. When we are rejected.C. When we feel threatened.D. When we feel uncomfortable.27. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A. Conformity cannot be avoided by anyone.B. Conformity is linked to the size of the group.C. Conformity is a natural response to challenges.D. Conformity isn’t related to individual differences.COver a decade ago, scientists already recognized the potential smart cloths with sensors (传感器) could improve well-being. Nowadays the industry is starting to target specific health conditions. One example is diabetes. Now, Siren Care has developed an injury-detecting sock that could help people with diabetes prevent disability. Early detection is important in this process. Since skin ulcers (溃疡) are accompanied by a rise in temperature, studies show that detecting foot skin temperature at home could significantly reduce skin ulcers. Based on this, Siren produced a sock that can measure foot temperature in real time. What’s special about Siren’s product is that the sensors exist in the fabric of the sock. The product is powered by “SirenSmart”, a kind of electronic yarn (纱线). They weave the yarn into a sock using ordinary weaving machines and connect the final product to a PCB battery, whose lifetime is two months if used daily. The socksare only on when they’re worn; they go into sleep mode when off.All data from the socks is sent to the Siren app using Bluetooth technology, so the user can know the condition of his/her feet in real time. The application gives foot health scores and, when necessary, warns the user to adjust activity or see a healthcare professional.Ran Ma, the company’s CEO, explains the sock can tell t he user when to see a doctor. The socks are machine-washable, and don’t need to be charged. Every six months, the user gets a new box with seven pairs of socks to replace the used ones.Siren presented their product this year in Las Vegas and announced tha t they’re planning to start shipping their socks this summer. More excitingly, Siren is already planning future applications that will go beyond diabetes care. Anyway, as smart clothing becomes accessible, you’ll begin to see this health technology become more common.28. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 1 refer to?A. The result of the study.B. The problem with skins.C. The cause of skin ulcers.D. The importance of early detection.29. What can we learn about Siren’s smart s ock from the second paragraph?A. It can be charged.B. It is sensitive to skins.C. Its sensors can be seen.D. It is comfortable to wear.30. What should be the function of the smart sock?A. It cures its user of possible illness.B. It informs its user of his/her foot health.C. It assists its user to make a quicker recovery.D. It tests its user’s physical strength in real time.31. What does the author think of the smart clothing industry?A. It has a bright future.B. It is a profitable industry.C. It is readily available.D. It has widely applied.DScientists have found living organisms trapped in crystals (晶体) that could be 50,000 years old.The organisms were found in a hot, but beautiful cave system in Naica, Mexico. These ancient life forms can be seen only with a microscope. Penelope Boston, who leads the Astrobiology Institute at NASA, the space agency of the United States, says the ancient microbes were able to live by eating minerals such as iron. She spoke about the discovery recently at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. If the findings are confirmed, they will show how microbes can survive in extreme conditions. Forty different kinds of microbes and some viruses were found in the underground area. The genetic structures of these organisms are 10 percent different from those of their nearest relatives. The caves in Naica are 800 kilometers deep. They were once used for mining lead. Before the miners began working in the caves, the area was separated from the surface and the outside world. Some of the caves are as big as the large religious centers built during Europe’s Middle Ages. There are crystals covering the walls. The caves are so hot that scientists must wear special clothing to keep cool. The clothing keeps the crystals safe from human germs (病菌) or other damage. Boston said the researchers could only work for about 20 minutes at a time before they had to go to a room that was 38 degrees Celsius to cool down.NASA officials would not let Boston share her findings with scientific experts before last week’s announcement. So scientists could not say much about the findings. But Norine Noonan, a biologist with the University of South Florida, said she believed them. “Why are we surprised?” Noonan asked. “As a biologist, I would say life on earth is extremely tough and extremely colorful.”Boston is also studying microbes commonly found inside caves in other countries, such as Ukraine and the United States. These microbes appear to be impossible to kill. Boston said they show how difficult life on earth can be.32. The existence of the ancient microbes relies on .A. surrounding insectsB. eating mineralsC. diverse plantsD. absorbing air33. What can we infer about the caves in Naica from the passage?A. The walls were built during Middle Ages.B. The temperature in the caves is quite low.C. The environment in the caves is difficult to adapt to.D. The caves have been explored since they were formed.34. What is the biologist Norine Noonan’s attitude towards the findings?A. Neutral.B. Doubtful.C. Positive.D. Indifferent.35. What’s the main idea of the passage?A. Living organisms bring hope to scientific research.B. Caves provide living environment for living organisms.C. Microbes show great power to survive in terrible conditions.D. Scientists discover 50,000-year-old “super life” in Mexico.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
