Our concern is with the more personal aspects of communication: What happens when people from different cultures interact face-to-face? Hence, our approach examines the interpersonal dimensions of intercultural communication-as it occurs in various contexts. We focus on those variables of both culture and communication that come into play during the communication encounter – that time when participants from different cultures are trying to share ideas, information, and feelings.

Case 2
During a lunch buffet at a conference in China, Fa Wu, the interpreter of the conference, sat with four foreign participants. They were having a good time talking. When Fa Wu stood up for more food, she asked whether she could bring anything back for them.
Again, the four others said, “No”.
“Oh, please take something. I can’t eat this much food myself.”
The foreigners hrugged and one or two of them even frowned a little.
Everyone thanked her and said “no”. A while later, Fa Wu came back with a plate full of food, and asked whether the others would like to have something from her plate.
Before long, people started calling them at home. David was sometimes away on business trips for a few days, and if someone looked for him, Kathy often would find the conversation awkward.

1. Cross-Cultural Awareness
• What is cross-cultural awareness?
• Cross-cultural awareness is the ability to understand cultures—your own and others’—by means of objective, non-judgmental comparisons. It is an appreciation for, an understanding of, cultural pluralism—the ability to get rid of our ethnocentric tendencies and to accept another culture on its own terms. Many cross-cultural interactions go sour due to a lack of such an awareness.
• Presence: Presence in class is a must. Role-calling will be done

Global rise
However, with globalization, especially the increase of global trade, it is unavoidable that different cultures will meet, conflict, and blend together. People from different culture find it is difficult to communicate not only due to language barriers, but also are affected by culture styles. Thus the same words can mean different things to people from different cultures, even when they speak the "same" language. When the languages are different, and translation has to be used to communicate, the potential for misunderstandings increases. The study of cross-cultural communication is a global research area. As a result, cultural differences in the study of cross-cultural communication can already be found.
Orientation
Cross-cultural communication endeavours to bring together such relatively unrelated areas as cultural anthropology and established areas of communication. Its core is to establish and understand how people from different cultures communicate with each other. Its charge is to also produce some guidelines with which people from different cultures can better communicate with each other. The study of languages other than one's own can serve not only to help one understand what we as humans have in common, but also to assist in the understanding of the diversity ich underlines our languages' methods of constructing and organizing knowledge.
