6.Role-Play: Students are asked to make up a conversation based on some supposed

(1) Punctuality

Punctuality is important in social activities because nobody likes to be kept waiting. A punctual person is usually considered reliable and responsible. Lack of punctuality implies that the person does not have consideration for other people’s time.

(2) Make an Appointment

Many people schedule their time carefully so it’s polite to make an appointment first if you need to see anybody. It's usually necessary to make a phone call well in

advance to make an appointment with a doctor, dentist, lawyer, manager etc. You'd better call off or postpone your appointment if you can't make it. Try not to break an appointment without a notice in advance.

2. First Reading: Ask the students to scan the passage and find out the topic sentence of each paragraph and key words. (3-5 Minutes)

Paragraph 1

Topic Sentence:(the first sentence) In social activities, it is always emphasized to be punctual, to have a strong conception of time.

Key words: to be punctual; time conception; keep your promise

Paragraph 2

Topic sentence: as a host, whenever there is an activity, you should come to the place ahead of schedule.

Key words: host, ahead of schedule; guest punctual; people helping to entertain earlier than guests.

Paragraph 3

Topic Sentence: (the first sentence) after making an appointment, generally, don’t change it as that is impolite.

3. Second Reading: Ask the students to read paragraph by paragraph, trying to find out the answer with the information from each paragraph. (5-8 minutes) Paragraph 1

Q: When is it particularly important to be punctual?

A: When people go to take part in a social activity.

A: It will be considered impolite in the following cases, as failing to keep promise, not coming on time, going late to meet customer

4. Third Reading: Ask the students to underline the difficult sentences and new words. The teacher will help to explain the complicated sentences and usage of new words. (15 minutes)

eg. I apologized to her for stepping on her foot.

eg. I informed my boss that I can not work on Saturday.

The monitor informed us that the party will be on Friday.

7)unexpected a. not expected

eg. Her promotion was completely unexpected.

An unexpected guest is usually not welcome.

(2)Important Sentence Explanation

1) (Para. 1)... how anxious and embarrassed he will be when he, as a stranger to the place, sees no person meeting him!

Analysis: This is an exclamatory sentence with when-clause as an adverbial of time. As means "being", used here to introduce an adverbial of manner. Meeting is a present participial modifying person.

Translation:…要是他到了一个陌生的地方,看到没有人来接他,他会多么焦急和尴尬! Example:How happy and delighted she will be when she, as a foreigner, sees a friend meeting her at the airport.

2)(Para. 1) The same is true with the activity of seeing off a foreign guest. Analysis: The same is true with.., is a sentence pattern which means “…也是如此’’in Chinese. With is a preposition introducing the kind of thing which has the specific feature(s) mentioned in the previous sentence(s).

Translation:给外国人送行也是如此。

Example: The same is true with the learning of a foreign language.

3) (Para. 2) So, as a host, whenever there is an activity, you should come to the place ahead of schedule so as to wait for the guests to come.

Analysis: Whenever introduces an adverbial clause of time. In the main clause ahead of schedule is an adverbial of time while so as to introduce an adverbial of purpose. Translation:所以说,主人在搞活动时,要提前到场,等客人光临。

Example: So, as a fireman, whenever there is a fire, you should come to the place at once so as to put the fire under control.

4) (Para.2) Anyone, guest or host, who is really late for a social activity, should apologize to those who have already been there.

Analysis: Guest or host is a reduced form of whether he is a guest or a host. Note that here singular forms are used with no articles at all. The two who-clauses are used to modify anyone and those respectively.

Translation: 在社交活动中,不论是客人还是主人,如果迟到了,都应该向已经到场的人说声抱歉。

Example: Anyone, man or woman, who is in charge of a project, should often talk to those who participate in the project.

5) (Para.3) Sometimes, an appointment has been already made, but something unexpected happens and you find no time to inform the person concerned. Analysis: Notice that unexpected and concerned are both adjectives which function as post modifiers of something and the person respectively.

Translation:有时定好会面时间后,发生了意外的事,没有时间通知相关人员。Example: Sometimes a decision has been made, but some change has to be made because problems unexpected arise, and you have no time to discuss the change with the persons concerned.

5.Read and analyze (5 minutes)

The teacher guides the students to analyze the structure of the passage by completing the outline below.

6.Students make up conversations according to the following situation in groups and a group presentation is required. (8 minutes)

You go by bike to an appointment, but your bike breaks down on the way, and perhaps you will be late for the appointment. What would you do?

(You should inform the person concerned immediately by telephone. If you do not have time you should make an apology to the person afterwards.)

《高职高专英语》课程教学大纲 一、课程的基本信息 1、课程名称:高职高专英语 2、课程学时:240 (理论教学学时180+技能教学学时60) 3、适用专业:全校三年制高职非英语专业 二、课程的定位和教学目标 本大纲依据教育部制定的《高职高专教育英语课程教学基本要求》编写而成,以传授英语基础知识和培养应用能力为教育目标。在教学过程中,从高职高专教育的培养目标出发,遵循“以应用为目的”和“以必需、够用为度”的原则,使学生具备基本的听、说、读、写、译的能力。能在日常活动和业务活动中进行简单的口头和书面交流,并为今后进一步提高英语的交际能力打下基础。 鉴于目前高职高专学生入学时的水平差异较大,本课程的教学要求分为A、B两级。A级是标准要求,B级是过渡要求。入学水平较高的学生应达到A级要求,入学水平较低的学生应达到或接近B级要求。分级不分班进行教学。教学过程中教师应考虑不同层次学生的不同要求,加强分类指导。 本课程在加强英语语言基础知识和基本技能训练的同时,重视培养学生实际使用英语进行交际的能力。通过240课时的学习,学生应该达到下列要求: 1、词汇 A级:认知3400个英语单词(包括入学时要求掌握的1600个单词)以及由这些词构成的常用词组,并具有按照基本构词法识别生词的能力。对其中2000个左右的单词能正确拼写,英汉互译。学生还应结合专业英语学习,认知400个专业英语词汇。 B级:认知2500个英语单词(包括入学时要求掌握的1000个词)以及由这些词构成的常用词组,对其中1500个左右的单词能正确拼写、英汉互译。 2、语法

掌握基本的英语语法规则,在听、说、读、写、译中能正确运用所学语法知识。 3、听力 A级:能听懂日常和涉外业务活动中使用的结构简单、发音清楚、语速较慢(每分钟120词左右)的英语对话和不太复杂的陈述,理解基本正确。 B级:能听懂涉计日常交际的结构简单、发音清楚、语速较慢(每分钟90词左右)的英语简短对话和陈述,理解基本正确。 4、口语 A级:能用英语进行一般的课堂交际,并能在日常和涉外业务活动中进行简单的交流。 B级:掌握一般的课堂用语,并能在日常涉外活动中进行简单的交流。 5、阅读 A级:能阅读中等难度的一般题材的简短英文资料,理解正确。在阅读生词不超过总词数3%的英文资料时,阅读速度不低于每分钟70词。能读懂通用的简短实用文字材料,如信函、技术说明书、合同等,理解正确。 B级:能阅读难度较低的一般题材的简短英文资料,理解正确。在阅读生词不超过总词数3%的英文资料时,阅读速度不低于每分钟50词。基本能读懂通用的简短实用文字材料,如信函、产品说明等,理解基本正确。 6、写作 A级:能就一般性题材,在30分钟内写出80-100词的命题作文;能填写和模拟套写简短的英语应用文,如填写表格与单证、套写简历、通知、信函等,词句基本正确,无重大语法错误,格式恰当,表达清楚。 B级:能运用所学词汇和语法写出简单的短文;能用英语填写表格、套写便函、简历等,词句基本正确,无重大语法错误,格式基本恰当,表达比较清楚。 7、翻译(英译汉) A级:能借助词典将中等难度的一般题材的文字材料和对外交往中的一般业务文字材料译成汉语。理解正确,译文达意,格式恰当。在翻译生词不超过总词数5%的实用文字材料时,笔译速度每小时250个英语词。

高职高专教育英语课程教学基本要求 (试行) 一、适用对象 本教学基本要求适用于高职高专教育(即普通高等专科教育、高等职业教育和成人高等专科教育)非英语专业的学生。学生入学时一般应掌握基本的英语语音和语法知识,认知英语单词1000个(较低要求)-1600个(标准要求),在听、说、读、写、译等方面受过初步的训练。 二、教学目的 高职高专教育英语课程的教学目的是:经过180-220学时的教学,使学生掌握一定的英语基础知识和技能,具有一定的听、说、读、写、译的能力,从而能借助词典阅读和翻译有关英语业务资料,在涉外交际的日常活动和业务活动中进行简单的口头和书面交流,并为今后进一步提高英语的交际能力打下基础。 三、教学要求 鉴于目前高职、高专和成人高专学生入学时的英语水平差异较大,本课程的教学要求分为A、B两级,实行分级指导。A级是标准要求,B级是过渡要求。入学水平较高的学生应达到A级要求,入学水平较低的学生至少应达到B级要求。随着入学英语水平的不断提高,学生均应达到A级要求。 本课程在加强英语语言基础知识和基本技能训练的同时,重视培养学生实际使用英语进行交际的能力。通过本课程的学习,学生应该达到下列要求: 1.词汇 A级:认知3400个英语单词(包括入学时要求掌握的1600个词)以及由这些词构成的常用词组,对其中2000个左右的单词能正确拼写,英汉互译。学生还应结合专业 英语学习,认知400个专业英语词汇。 B级:认知2500个英语单词(包括入学时要求掌握的1000个词)以及由这些词构成的常用词组,对其中1500左右的单词能正确拼写,英汉互译。 2.语法 掌握基本的英语语法规则,在听、说、读、写、译中能正确运用所学语法知识。 3.听力 A级:能听懂日常和涉外业务活动中使用的结构简单、发音清楚、语速较慢(每分钟120词左右)的英语对话和不太复杂的述,理解基本正确。 B级:能听懂涉及日常交际的结构简单、发音清楚、语速较慢(每分钟110词左右)的英语简短对话和述,理解基本正确。 4.口语 A级:能用英语进行一般的课堂交际,并能在日常和涉外业务活动中进行简单的交流。 B级:掌握一般的课堂用语,并能在日常涉外活动中进行简单的交流。 5.阅读 A级:能阅读中等难度的一般题材的简短英文资料,理解正确。在阅读生词不超过总词数3%的英文资料时,阅读速度不低于每分钟70词。能读懂通用的简短实用文字材 料,如信函、技术说明书、合同等,理解正确。 B级:能阅读中等难度的一般题材的简短英文资料,理解正确。在阅读生词不超过总词

Unit 1 People 1.Warming up: Using the phrases “How do you do? My name is .... Nice to meet you.” written on the board. 2.Focus: The students are shown pictures of people meeting for the first time. They are also supplied with a dialogue which they can copy to say what they do when they meet somebody for the first time. They join their hands at palms and smile. They shake hands and smile. They bow from the waist and lower their eyes. Ask students to: 1)Match nationalities with the pictures: which picture shows an Indian woman? Which pictures shows two Japanese women? Which picture shows two Americans? Which pictures shows two Chinese men? 2)Act out one of these greetings in class. The other students must guess how they are greeting each other. Are you bowing from the waist and lowering your eyes? Are you shaking hands and smiling? 3)Tell how they greet each other? How they greet older people? How they greet their teachers? How they greet their parents and other relatives?
