There are two types of clauses: main and subordinate. A main clause contains a subject and a predicate. This type of clause is also called

Independent clauses.because it can stand alone as a sentence. The girl is laughed.

A subordinate (or dependent) clause contains a subject and a predicate but cannot stand alone. This type of clause must be used with a main clause in order to make sense. It usually begins with a connecting word or phrase, such as after, although, as if, until, when, where, that, or what.

Main and Subordinate Clauses(主从句)

名词性从句(主语从句、宾语从句、同位语从句、表语从句)

引导词的分类:

1.连接代词:what,who, whom, whose, which, whatever, whoever, whichever,且这些词在从句中担当主、宾、表、定语作用。

2. 连接副词:why, when, where, how 在从句中充当时间、地点、原因、方式、程度状语。

Whether , if在从句中不充当成分,但整个句式中不可缺少,用以体现事件的不确定性。

3.that 是名词从句中一个很活泼的词,但它只起连接作用,不充当成分,陈述某一事实,引导宾语从句时某些情况可以省略。

4. that , whether, if 在名词从句中的使用情况

(1)that 在宾语从句中大多数情况下可以省略,在主要从句、同位语从句、表语从句中不可省去。

但注意一下宾语从句中that 不可省。

I know nothing of him except that he is from Henan.(介

词短语从句中的that不可省)

(2)whether , if 宾语从句中有时可换用,但在主语从句、同位语从句、表语从句中不可省去。

但注意以下宾语从句中不能用if的情况:

It all depends on whether they will support us.(从句作介词宾语时不可用if)

He doesn’t know whether to stay or not.(后直接跟不定式时,不能用if)

Please let me know if you like it.(这句是有双重意思

的,如果视为宾语从句,就应换为whether,否则就引起歧义)

三、状语从句

(一)时间状语从句

When, while, as, before, after, since, till/until, once, every/each time, the first/second... time, whenever (二)原因状语从句

as, since, because, now that 等引导。

(三)地点状语从句

Where , wherever; 注意不要和where 所引起的定语从句弄混淆。

(四)条件状语从句

If, unless, so(as) long as, so far as, in case

注意从句中不能出现将来时的形式。

(五)让步状语从句

Although(though), even if (though), however, whatever 注意:though(although) 引起从句时,主句中不能出现but, 但可以用yet或still连接。

as 引起从句时,要用倒装。

(六)结果状语从句

So, so(...) that和so that的不同。

(七)目的状语从句

So that, in order that 引导,放于主句之后。

(八)方式状语从句

As, as if , as though 等引导。

As if 或as though 引导的从句,既可用陈述语气,也可用虚拟语气,表示与主观上的不符。
