On his fifth birthday, the man 39 , his uncle had taken him to a candy(糖果) 40 and told him that he could take 41 he wanted, and as much as he wanted.

Get a taste of abundance and try to have a great life.

When we hear the words “ college students”, we usually think of a young person between 18 and 22 years old. But in the U.S.A today, a college student often is much older. In fact, educators say in the next few years colleges and universities may have more older part-time students than traditional (传统的) full-time younger students.

Educators report a big increase in the number of Americans who attend college and university classes in the evening or at night or weekends. Most of them are older than 25 years old and more have full-time or part-time jobs. Many are in their thirties or forties.

Why are so many people deciding to spend their time and money in order to continue their education? Most are doing it because they believe more education will help them to get a better job. Some are industrial workers whose factories have closed. They are learning new skills to prepare for other kinds of work. Some of the part-time students are not pleased with the jobs they have. They are studying for new ones. Some have retired (退休) and are looking for new kinds of work. Two of every three of the students older than 35 are women. Many of them are returning to school after years of staying at home to care for children.

Are older students good students? Most teachers say yes. They say older students really want to learn. They ask difficult questions and are not pleased with simple answers. They often get high grades.

Good humour lets us escape our daily routines(日常事物). No matter how bad your day is, you can always sit down and watch Seinfeld or The Simpsons, and for a half hour forget about your problems and just laugh..

Humour itself is the act of being laughable. People have different opinions about what is funny. Not all people have the same sense of humour, and that is why there are so many types of comedy shows.

Shows like South Park, Saturday Night Live, Punk’d and Friends are all made for different audience.

Some people like crude humour, some like witty(言辞诙谐的) humour, some like humour at the expense of(在牺牲……的情况下) others, and some people like good-hearted humour.

People can say they don’t think one thing is funny or how can someone possibly laugh at that, but this is what makes humour unique. It’s different for everyone.

While it is true that people can have similar senses of humour, just like snowflakes, no two are alike. And this is why we have such a large variety of humour with which to surround ourselves.

Humour doesn’t care about where you’ve been or where you’re going. All homour cares about is helping you get there with a smile.

One of the keys to having a good life is having a good sense of humour. Being able to laugh at a joke, appreciate a funny movie or laugh at yourself will do wonders for the body. Why do you think George Burns lived to be 100 years old? Not because he took great care of his body, but because he was a comedian and had spent his whole life laughing. A. show that he was a famous comedian

B. help you save some money

Over the last few weeks, "duo maomao" has become one of this year's hot expressions among netizens (网民).Duo maomao is a children's game, similar to hide-and-seek (捉迷藏). In their recent use, though, the two words refer to an incident far darker than a lighthearted children's game: the authorities' irresponsible explanation of the death of Li Qiaoming, an inmate in a Jinning detention house in Yunnan province.

Li, 24, was put in custody (被拘留) in January for illegally cutting down trees. Less than a month after he was put in the detention house, he died of serious head injuries on February 8. The Jinning county public security bureau said his death was an accident. They wrote in their official report that Li had run into a wall while playing hide-and-seek with other inmates.

This piece of news quickly caused heated discussion among Chinese netizens . They said the police were covering up the truth and using the game as an excuse. On https://www.360docs.net/doc/9617697211.html,, the incident's discussion board gathered over 54,000 comments expressing anger and sarcasm (讽刺) over the official report. The Supreme People's Court became involved in the case after the public outcry. The court sent a commissioner (专员) to guide the work of Yunnan police. After an investigation , on February 27, the Yunnan Public Security Bureau held a press conference. They announced that inmate Li Qiaoming had in fact been beaten to death by other inmates under the pretence of playing a game. The prisoners, as well as several of the on-duty officials, have been punished.

The victim's father, Li Defa, admitted the role and influence of China's media and netizens when he thanked them for paying "attention to the case". He received 350,000 yuan in compensation from the Jinning police. He said he was satisfied with the government's handling of the case. Not as easily satisfied, netizens have raised more questions about the new version of events."If this is the truth, why was there a need to cover it up in the first place? Why did it take the police so long to get to the bottom

of things?" reads one online post.

73. What does the hot online expression “duo maomao” refer to?

A. A children's game: hide and seek.

Attention, please! I’m going to give you a summary of today’s discussio n about whether we should go online in our spare time.

Most students think we can go online as much as possible in our spare time because we are free then. Through the Internet, we can gain plenty of the newest knowledge and the latest news at home and abr oad. What’s more, network offers us a convenient way to communicate with each other. The Internet makes our lives outside class colorful and various.

On the other hand, a few students partly agree to this idea. Going online is part of our daily life but th ey suggest a time limit. They’ve found that more students are playing computer games instead of studying their lessons. There’re also a few students who are often absent from school for days to go online.

I think we should make proper use of the Internet.

That’s all. Thank you!

A Well, parents, surprise! Lots of us are using Twitter and Facebook to find rides, and not just to school. It’s awkward to call a friend and ask for a ride, and half the time they’ll say, “Sorry, my car is full.” But with Twitter, you just tweet #Ashleys Pool Party and look for other people heading the same way. It may sound risky, but many teens stay within their own social circles to find rides, and don’t branch out beyond friends when asking on Twitter. For me, I only rideshare with people I know, but to some young people, especially those taking longer trips, stranger danger is less of a concern. The sharing economy got big during the recession(经济衰退). It allows people to access more goods and services using technology, while also allowing them to share cost. And that technology, for me, is what the car was for my mom, a gateway to more freedom. According to the researchers at the University of Michigan, 30 years ago, eight in ten American 18-year-olds had a driver’s license. Today it’s six in ten. So it’s not that surprising that on my 16th birthday I wasn’t rushing to get a license. All I wanted was an iPhone. Juliet Schor (Sociology professor at Boston College) knows people of my age love being connected and for young people driving means they have to disconnect from their technology, and that’s a negative. So if they could sit in the passenger side and still be connected, that’s going to be a plus. To me, another plus is ridesharing represents something more than trying to save money. I see it as evidence that people still depend on each other. My generation shares their cars and apartments the way neighbors used to share cups of sugar. For the system to work, some of us still need our own cars. But until I get my own version of the silver Super Beetle, you can find me on Twitter. 21 The writer usually rideshares with _____. A. anyone heading the same way B. people he knows

This even was started by Jennifer Barlow of Midlothian, Virginia in 2003, and it is becoming more popular each year. It has been supported by the International Dark-Sky Association, the American Astronomical Society, and the Astronomical League. This even always occurs in April, during the week of the new moon so that the sky can be as dark as possible for the best viewing conditions. “It is my wish that people could see the night sky without other light in the sky as our ancestors (祖先) saw it hundreds of years ago,” explains Barlow. Since it only lasts a week and not everyone in the country will take part in it, how will the National Dark-Sky Week reduce light pollution? The main goal of NDSW is to increase awareness (意识) of the harmful effects of light pollution. It is not possible for all of the light pollution in this part of the world to disappear. However, it is possible to make a small difference in the quality of the night sky. Another goal of this even is to promote (促进) the use of better lighting systems that direct light toward the ground instead of up into the sky. Jennifer Barlow states, “The night sky is a gift of such beauty that it should not be polluted by wasted light. In this way, our children will not lose touch with the wonder of our universe.” 11. This passage is mainly about ______________. A. better lighting systems B. the beauty of the night sky C. the harm of light pollution D. the National Dark-Sky Week 12. Which of the following statements about the National Dark-Sky Week is WRONG? A. It is becoming more and more popular in America. B. The event was started in 2003 by Jennifer Barlow. C. The event takes place in the first week of every April. D. American people are supposed to turn off their lights during that week. 13. What is Jennifer Barlow’s wish? A. That light would be directed up into the sky. B. That the sky would always be as dark as possible. C. That people could see the night sky without light pollution as our ancestors did. D. That people could spend time enjoying the beauty of the sky every night. 14. We can infer from the underlined(划线的)sentence in Paragraph 4 that ____________. A. many people in America hate this event B. it may be hard to reduce light pollution C. the event should last a month every year D. light will no longer pollute the sky soon 15. 2017-2018学年高二年级周练二英语试卷

江西省安义中学2017-2018学年度上学期高二英语第二次周练试卷 第一节阅读理解 Life is not easy in senior high school. You’ve got the pressure of studies and exams. From time to time, you may feel depressed and frustrated. When depression strikes, you have to take measures to fight it. One of the strangest ways to fight depression is to eat salt, scientists have found. Salt acts as a natural anti—depressant (抗抑郁剂), researchers say. While too much can lead to high blood pressure and heart disease, not enough can cause “psychological(心理的) d epressions”, a study has reported. The study, by researchers at the University of Iowa in the US, discovered that when rats are deficient in salt, they don’t do activities they normally enjoy. The recommended daily salt intake for an adult is four grams, although experts say the body needs only half as much. However, most adults in the developed world consume(消耗)around ten grams a day, mainly because their diets contain high salt amounts. Today, 77 percent of US salt intake comes from processed and restaurant foods, like frozen dinners and fast food. The minerals in salt are required by the body—in small quantities—to help move liquid in and out of cells. But too much can cause diseases, for example high blood pressure. Today scientists are finding that salt is an addictive substance—almost like a drug. One s ign of addiction is using a substance even when it’s known to be harmful. Many people are told to eat less salt due to health concerns, but they have trouble doing so because they like the taste and find low-salt foods tasteless. Humans have a long histor y of eating salt. In the Stone Age, people didn’t need to find salt, because they hunted most of their food, and ate a lot of red meat, which has plenty of salt in it. But when people began to farm, about 10,000 BC, they started to eat mainly grains like rice and wheat, and very little meat. Then they had to find another way to get salt. 1. What does the underlined word "deficient" in the third paragraph mean? A. enough B. far from enough C. more than enough D. plenty 2. The major role of salt is to ____________. A. help the body work well B. help fight against depression C. help people get rid of an addiction to drugs D. help people enjoy sugary substances 3. Which of the following statements is true? A. People have trouble reducing salt because they don't know it is harmful to eat too much of it. B. Before 10,000 BC, human beings did not need salt. C. The richer the country is, the more salt is eaten there. D. Taking more than 4 grams of salt a day can be harmful for an adult's health. 4. What kind of food should people eat more of? A. Frozen food B. Fast food C. Red meat D Low--salt food 第二节:七选五 Everyone knows that the Frenchmen are romantic, the Italians are fashionable and the Germans are serious. Are these just stereotypes(刻板印象) or is there really such a thing as national character? And if there is, can it affect how a nation succeed or fail? At least one group of people is certain that it can. A recent survey of the top 500 entrepreneurs (企业家) in the UK found that 70% felt that their efforts were not appreciated by the British public. Britain is hostile (敌意的) to success, they said. It has a culture of jealousy(嫉妒).__5__ Jealousy is sometimes known as the “green-eyed monster” and the UK is its home. Scientists at Warwich University in the UK recently tested this idea. They gathered a group of people together and gave each an imaginary amount of money.__6__ Those given a little were given the chance to destroy the large amount of money given to others— but at the cost of losing their own. Two thirds of the people tested agreed to do this. __7__. But there is also opposite evidence. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development recently reported that the UK is now the world's fourth largest economy. That is not bad for people who are supposed to hate success. People in the UK also work longer hours than anyone else in Europe. So the British people are not lazy, either. “It is not really success that the British dislike,” says Carey Cooper, a professor of management at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. “It’s people using their success in a way that seems proud or unfair or which separates them from their roots.” _8__ They set out to do things in their way. They work long hours. By their own efforts they become millionaires.__9__ It hardly seems worth following their example. If they were more friendly, people would like them more. And more people want to be like them. A. This seems to prove that the entrepreneurs were right to complain. B. The one who owns most money in the end is the winner.

It is played throughout the spring and summer, and professional baseball teams play well into the fall. Football is the most popular sport in the fall. The game originated as a college sport more than 75 years ago. It’s not the same as European football or soccer.
