If you choose only to complain and escape from a misfortune,it will always follow you wherever you go.But if you decide to be strong, the hardship will turn out to be a fortune on which new hopes will arise.

In an accident,a boy lost both his arms and his father—who was the main source of support for the family.Since then,he has had to depend on the arms of his younger brother. For the sake of taking care of him,his younger brother became his shadow, never leaving him alone for years.Except for writing with his toes,he was completely unable to do anything in his life.

As the two brothers grew up together, they had their share of problems and they would often quarrel. Then one day,his younger brother wanted to leave, living his own life,as many normal people do.So he was heart-broken and didn’t know what to do.

A similar misfortune befell a girl, too. One night her mother, who suffered from chronic (慢性的) mental illness, disappeared. Her father went out to look for her mother, leaving her alone at home. She tried to prepare meals for her parents, only to overturn the kerosene light on the stove, resulting in a fire which took her hands away.

Though her elder sister who was studying in another city, showed her willingness to take care of her,she was determined to be completely independent. At school, she always studied hard. Most of all she learned to be self-reliant.

One day,the boy and the girl were both invited to appear on a television interview program. The boy told the TV host about his uncertain future at being left on his own, whereas the girl was full of enthusiasm for her life. They both were asked to write something on a piece of paper with their toes. The boy wrote:My younger brother’s arms are my arms;while the girl wrote:Broken wings, flying heart.

Howie Choset,a roboticist, has been researching and building robots, particularly snake robots,at Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Mellon University f or years.

Choset believes that his snake robot and others like it help reduce medical costs by making complex surgeries (外科手术) faster and easier.Choset says his new design is smaller and more flexible than earlier models. The size of surgical robots allows surgeons to operate with far less damage to the body, helping the patient heal faster. For example, instead of opening the entire chest up during heart surgery,a small hole is made, and a thin robotic snake crawls inside to the proper spot.

Dr Ashutosh Tewari of Cornell University Medical Center has used robotic tools to perform thousands of operations.Tewari said he’s most excited about the potential for surgical robots to do things humans can’t do.He said the variety of sensors available for surgical robots keeps expanding, even as they get smaller. He said they may one day be able to test chemicals or blood in the body,or even the electrical connections in nerves.

Choset has also built larger snake robots designed for search and rescue,or just exploration. They can climb poles or trees and then look around through a camera in

the head, and slid through places humans can’t reach.

Another expert at Carnegie Mellon stresses that there’s still an enormous gap between humans and even the most high-tech robots.Manuela V elosa noted that robots have been built that are good at one or two tasks—but not at the variety of tasks humans perform without even thinking.

Velosa has been building robots that ask humans for help when they don’t know what to do,as well as teams of robots that play soccer against each other.Sometimes, the robots surprise her by having once defeated the other team.

“It was programmed by me,but it looked to me as if they learned,” she said.“I believe we are much closer to having robots be able to exist with humans peacefully. The beautiful thing is you see the robots learning.”

6.How does Choset help save medical costs?

A.By changing the size of robots frequently.

B.By designing larger snake robots.

C.By making complex surgeries faster and easier.

D.By improving the models of earlier snake robots.

7.The main advantage of using the thin surgical robot is________.

A.reducing the damage to the body

B.proving the technology useful to them

C.helping the doctors make much money

D.worsening the patient’s sickness

8.According to Manuela Velosa,________.

A.robots will replace humans in the future

B.robots can do much better than humans at some tasks

C.no robots can be made to turn to humans for help

D.robots are able to learn by themselves

9.What can be inferred from the text?

A.The snake robot is thought to have no potential.

B.Larger snake robots are not practical.

C.Doctors will refuse to use the snake robot.

D.The future robot will be smarter and more popular.

10.What is the text mainly about?

A.Three famous roboticists.

B.Researching and building robots.

C.How to make snake robots.

D.Different ideas on robots.

Learning is anytime, anywhere with anyone。

A little bit every day makes perfect(点滴铸就完美)。

A Here's a familiar version of the boy-meets-girl situation. A young man has at last plucked up courage to invite a dazzling young lady out to dinner. She has accepted his invitation and he is overjoyed. He is determined to take her to the best restaurant in town, even if it means that he will have to live on memories and hopes during the month to come. When they get to the restaurant, he discovers that this beautiful creature is on a diet. She mustn’t eat this and she mustn't drink that. Oh, but of course, she doesn't want to spoil his enjoyment. Let him by all means eat as much fattening food as he wants: it’s the surest way to an early grave. They spend a truly memorable evening together and never see each other again. What a miserable lot dieters are! You can always recognize them from the sour expression on their faces. They spend most of their time turning their noses up at food. They are forever consulting calorie charts; gazing at themselves in mirrors; and leaping on to weighing-machines in the bathroom. They spend a lifetime fighting a losing battle against spreading hips, bigger tummies(肚子) and double chins. Some declare all-out war on FAT. Mere dieting is not enough. They exhaust themselves doing exercises, sweating in sauna baths, being massaged by weird machines. The really wealthy pay vast sums for “health cures”. For two weeks they can enter a nature clinic and be starved to death for a hundred dollars a week. Don’t think it’s o nly the middle-aged who go in for these fashions either. Many of these bright young things you see are living on nothing but air, water and the goodwill of God. Dieters undertake to starve themselves of their own free will; so why are they so miserable? We ll, for one thing, they’re always hungry. You can't be hungry and happy at the same time. All the horrible foods they eat leave them permanently dissatisfied. “Wonderfood is a complete food”, the advertisement says. “Just dissolve(溶解) a teaspoonful in wate r…”. A complete food it may be, but not quite as complete as a juicy steak. And, of course, they’re always miserable because they

(A ) A coal-fire stove(炉灶)provided heating for Zhao Yaoqin's courtyard bungalow in a Beijing hutong all her life. This winter, however, the stove has disappeared from the 66-year-old's life, and an electric radiator takes its place beside her bed, a product of a government to use clean energy in the national capital. With the Olympics to be staged in Beijing next August, the city is determined to eliminate the use of coal within the Third Ring Road that circles the city before the Games. The project to replace the stoves with electric radiators has been part of the effort. When the city's four-month long heating season started on Thursday, coal-fired stoves, known as a big source of pollution in the big city, have disappeared from some 20,000 local households like Zhao's bungalow in the inner city "hutong" -- traditional alleyways(小巷) that date back centuries. "We used to boil water or bake bread on the stove," said Zhao, sounding sentimental(伤感) to the disappearance of the coal furnace from her life. Late in the 1990s, Beijing's air quality monitoring office found that the emissions(排放) of sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide from the hutong areas have been higher than the city's average in winter, mainly because of the coal stoves. With the project to switch to clean energy for heating launched in 1999, the emission level of the two poisonous substances decreased by 42 percent and 44 percent, respectively, this year from 2001 levels. Zhao said the fee for electrical heat for the entire winter was usually around 2,400 yuan (US$323) per household. With the government's subsidy(补贴), however, she only needed to pay about 500 yuan, nearly the same price as that for coal. 1.Zhao Yaoqin’ example in the passage is to tell us that_______. A.people in Beijing using electric radiators to welcome the Olympics. B.people in Beijing are doing something to protect the environment. C.hutongs in Beijing have a long history. D.People pay more money to use electric radiators than before. 2. The underlined word eliminate probably means________ A. cut down. B. increase. C. get rid of. D. replace 3. We can infer from the passage that ______ A. Zhao Yaoqin has a strong and deep emotion with the use of coal-fire stove. B. The government will pay most of the fee. C. The air of Beijing has been badly polluted since 1990s. D. The people do not use coal eight months in one year. 4. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? A. The clean air is important when the Olympics Games is held in Beijing. B. The success of the Olympics Games depends on the clean air. C. The government spare no effort to make the environment better. D. The emission level of poisonous substances will be low in 2008.

A If you want to slow aging, you might want to eat less. This finding is good news---if you were a mouse. The researchers studied mice, not people. John Price and other researchers studied two groups of mice. One group was able to eat as much as it wanted. The researchers limited what the mice in the other group ate. Their diet had 35 percent fewer calories than the first group of mice. Price says the mice with the diet restrictions were “more energetic and suffered few er disease.” They were not just living longer but seemed to stay younger for a longer period of time. The researchers found that fewer calories slow down a natural mechanism in cells called ribosomes. Price explains that ribosomes are responsible for making important proteins in the cells. But with fewer calories, they slow down. This gives the cells more time to repair themselves. The researchers say ribosomes use from 10 to 20 percent of the cell’s energy to make those proteins. Price wrote that “because of this, it is impractical to destroy an entire ribosome” when it starts to break down. However, “repairing individual parts of the ribosome on a regular basis enables ribosomes to continue producing high quality proteins for longer than they would otherwise. This top quality production, in turn, keeps cells and the entire body functioning well.” “Food,” he said, “isn’t just material to be burned---it’s a signal that tells our body and cells how to respond.” Price said the findings help to explain how exac tly our bodies age. And this may “help us make more educated decisions about what we eat.” 1.What can we know about the mice with limited calories from the study? A. They can keep healthy easily B. They need more energy to be active C. They can look younger than they are D. They will live a longer life like humans

And yet – we still have no cure for the common cold. Why can’t we st op the common cold? According to Peter Barlow, a scientist at Edinburgh Napier University in the UK, the main challenge lies in the many different types of cold viruses that are produced by the rhinoviruses (鼻病毒). There are at least 160 types. They mutate (突变) so easily that they quickly become resistant to drugs, or learn to hide from our immune systems. In other words, a single cure isn’t likely to work on every type of cold. However, researchers from Stanford University and the University of California, San Francisco, have found a possible answer. They discovered a protein that the viruses need. Without it, they can’t spread inside your body. To identify the gene which produces the specific protein needed by the viruses, researchers used a gene-editing technique to test all genes in the human genome (基因组) one by one for thousands of cells. These modified (改变的) cells were then exposed to a range of enteroviruses(肠病毒), including the rhinoviruses which cause the common cold. All the viruses were unable to replicate (复制) inside cells without a gene that produces a specific protein, called methyltransferase SETD3. Then, they tested genetically modified mice, which were completely unable to produce the protein. The mice were able to live healthy, normal lives wit hout the protein. “Lacking that gene protected the mice completely from viral infection.” associate professor Jan Carette, from Stanford, told the BBC. “These mice would always die, but they survived and we saw a very strong reduction in viral replication and very strong protection.” Carette said the plan is to find a drug which can temporarily suppress (抑制) the protein, instead of producing genetically modified humans. “We have identified a fantastic target that all enteroviruses and rhinoviruses require and depend on. Take that away and the virus really has no chance.” said Carette. “This is a really good first step – the second step is to have a chemical that mimics (模拟) this genetic deletion.” he added.

C In 2013 alone at least 20,000 African elephants were killed for their teeth. In South Africa over the last two years more than 2,200 rhinos were killed for their horns. These numbers are alarming, because current rates of illegal hunting are faster than birth rates, which could lead to extinction for these ecologically important creatures in their environment. Indeed, some elephant and rhino populations are on track to be locally extinct within the next decade. If you are reading this, you may already be aware of these facts. But you might not know that wildlife trafficking(走私) not only threatens the existence of elephants and rhinos but is also leading to extinction of other species, such as tigers, tortoises, sea turtles — and the world’s most trafficked mammal(哺乳动物)— pangolins.
