历史上出现了一些艺术家,着意在自己作品中创造丑怪的形象。唐代韩愈就常常用艰涩难读的诗句描绘灰暗、怪异、恐怖的事物,所以刘熙载说:“昌黎诗往往以丑为美。”杜甫诗中也常常描绘丑的事物和景象,并且常常使用“丑”、“老丑”一类的字眼。书法家中追求丑怪的人就更多。清初的傅山甚至直接喊出“宁丑毋媚”的口号。在这些艺术家看来,艺术中的“丑”不仅不低于“美”,而且比“美”更能表现生命的力量,更能表现人生的艰难,更能表现自己胸中的勃然不可磨灭之气。

②以美为主,以丑衬美的审美意识,在中国古典美学中具有重要地位

丑的特征因美的对照而更加显著,反之亦然。唐代刘禹锡“沉舟侧畔千帆过,病树前头

万木春”以死寂病态的丑来衬托充满生机活力的社会和自然的壮美,这种以丑衬美的认识早于西方近千年。丑的表现往往在使人们在感官上对世界的认识更鲜明、更深刻。

③化丑为美,即把现实丑转化为艺术美,是中国美丑观的又一重要观念

其效果是通过对丑恶现象的艺术加工引起审美快感。因为艺术所展示的不是现实中原封不动的丑,而是被赋予了艺术形象的对象,它的内容会引起人们道德伦理的批判,而形式却给人以艺术享受,唤起审美快感。甚至很多人认为丑的形象比美的形象更具感染力和冲击力。这里的化丑为美又分两种,即由人物外表丑化为对象心灵美的,和化人物丑为作家美的。丑显示着生命力的旺盛,勃发着一种恶狠的,自虐性的快感。

席勒“只有当人充分是人的时候,他才游戏;只有当人游戏的时候,他才完伞是人”这句话是说人之所以会产生游戏的冲动,是因为生命力的盈余。即当人充分是人的时候。游戏可以调和人身上自然与理性的矛盾,使人处于自由状态,从而达到人性的完满实现。即人完全是人。席勒阐发了他关于游戏说的两个观点:

①“过剩精力”是文艺与游戏产生的共同生理基础

席勒在康德的基础上加以发挥,他认为人的艺术活动是一种以审美外观为对象的游戏冲动。“过剩精力”是文艺与游戏产生的共同生理基础。所谓游戏,其实也就是一种审美活动。在席勒看来,人之所以会产生游戏的冲动,是因为生命力的盈余。审美的游戏,是对动物性游戏的提升,它根本上是一种想象力的游戏。游戏作为游戏冲动作为调和感性冲动和理性冲动的中介,创造了最广义的美。

②自由是审美与游戏的根本特征

游戏可以调和人身上自然与理性的矛盾,使人处于自由状态,从而达到人性的完满实现。席勒认为,游戏的根本特征在于自由。而人只有在审美活动中才是自由的。基于以上观点,他认为审美与游戏是相通的。这也正是在审美摆脱任何外在目的,而以自身为目的,心灵各种内力达到和谐因而是自由的这意义上使用游戏这一概念的原因。

席勒认为,游戏不仅是审美活动的根本特征,而且是人摆脱动物状态达到人性的一种主要标志。席勒所说的游戏,是指人在摆脱了物质欲望和道德必然性的懒散后所从事的一种真正自由的活动。游戏,其实就是一种审美活动。(

(2)席勒“游戏说”的贡献与不足

他试图从人的生命活动的独特性质中去探寻审美发生的直接精神动力,并且敏锐地揭示审美活动与人自由本质之间的内在关系。他既看到了人的审美活动与动物游戏活动的不同,也发现二者之间存在的某种深层的联系。

然而席勒“游戏说”忽视了对动物相认的游戏转化过程的机制及人的游戏得以发生和进行的社会历史条件的探讨。在席勒看来,游戏与审美几乎是同义词。

鲍姆嘉通认为美学对象就是研究美,美感和艺术美的规律,就是研究感性认识的完善。美学所研究的规律可以应用到一切艺术,“对于各种艺术有如北斗星”。而黑格尔认为美学对象是研究美的艺术。他把自然美排除在美学研究领域之外,他之所以研究自然美,是因为自然美是心灵美的反映形态。可见,黑格尔认为美学的研究对象只是艺术美。

②两者的美学定义的侧重点不同

鲍姆嘉通重感性。他不满意以往的理性主义哲学对感性认识的的贬低和轻视,注重感性认识,主要是审美意识和艺术问题的严肃的哲学沉思。因此,他提出了美学对象就是感性认识的完善。由此可见美学虽是作为一种认识论提出的,同时也是研究艺术和美的科学。

黑格尔重理念。他在《美学》开始就宣布他“所讨论的并非一般的美,而是艺术的美”,并且认为美学的正当名称应该是“艺术哲学”。这样,他就把美学的范围界定下来,排除了“自然美”。黑格尔的全部美学思想都是从一个中心思想生发出来的,这就是他对美的定义:“真,就它是真来说,也存在着。当真在它的这种外在存在中是直接呈现于意识,而且它的概念是直接和它的外在现象处于统一体时,理念就不仅是真的,而且是美的了”。美因此可以下这样的定义:美就是理念的感性显现。理念就是绝对精神,也就是最高的真实,黑格尔又把它叫做“神”、“普遍的力量”、“意蕴”等。这就是艺术的内容。

(2)联系

鲍姆嘉通鼓励感性认识以及在目的论上,对后来西方美学思想的影响是巨大的。黑格尔的美学思想也明显受到他的影响,提出了美是理念的感性显现。黑格尔所处时代的形式主义和感性主义在当时美学界以至在现在的资产阶级美学界都是占优势的。黑格尔的全部美学思想就是要驳斥这种风靡一时的形式主义和感性主义,强调艺术与人生重大问题的密切联系和理性的内容对于艺术的重要性。同时他们都强调美学是对艺术的研究,都不排斥艺术中的感性和理性因素。
