Something I gained from this book“‘I am not asking you for any mercy,’Julien went on in a firmer voice. …I have no illusions, death awaits me:it will be a just death. I was capable of attempting to kill the woman most worthy of everyone‟s respect and everyone‟s esteem. Mrs. Renal had been like a mother to me. My crime is appalling, and it was premeditated. I therefore deserve to die, gentlemen of the jury. But if I were less guilty, I see around me men who have no time for any pity that my youth might deserve, and who will wish to punish in me and forever discourage this generation of young men who, being born into an inferior class and in some sense ground down by poverty, have the good fortune to get themselves a decent education, and the audacity to mingle in what the rich in their arrogance call society.That is my crime, gentlemen, and it will be punished all the more severely as I am not being tried by my peers. I do not see on the jury‟s benches any peasant who has grown rich, but only outraged members of the bourgeoisie…’”<<The Red and the Black>> is said to be a great famous book which was written by Stendhal, according to a story, he wrote this novel. The story is from the newspaper at that time. It is about a criminal case but also an impressive story. At the time when Stendhal lived, the Red stands for the army, at the same time the Black stands for the church. They are 2 ways for ambitious young people to develop themselves."The Red and the Black" is a European critical realism foundation workin the nineteenth century.The novel revolves around the protagonist Julien‟s individual struggle experience and ultimate failure. especially in his two romance, widely displayed "social atmosphereat the beginning of the 1830sover French people's heads brought from successive governments", strongly criticized the aristocratic reaction,the darkness of the churchand the upstart Bourgeois‟dirtydespicable vulgar features, and they areblinded by greed.Therefore, althoughJulien‟s love story is considered as the main line in this novel, but it is not a story totally about love but a story about politics.Read <<The Red and the Black>> is a long process.Time tries all things, so it does. As the sign of 19thcentury, when nearly 300 years passed, it is still the one of the best books to read. While you read it, you feel like that you are a man standing in the center of town and learning about all things in the special period of time.When I read it, Iconcentrate on the exploration and thinking.I finished the book with finding out its huge charm.The author showed 19thcentury‟sappearance of the societyfroma simple criminal case. The writer raised a common criminal offense to a level wherewe can have a study of history and philosophy. I learned from the realistic works about an artistic characteristic---- Stendhal‟s dialectics which is different from 《Eugenie Grandet》and《Father Goriot》of Balzac, because it is showing all of the society, instead offocusing on describing one person.The most dazzling and famous character is Julien, hehas a civilian background, high educational level, working as a tutor , having a relationship with the hostess which came to light, and he was sentenced to deathand this was the story‟s skeleton.Writer ignored the description of outside things but of the character‟s mind. Just depend on Julien‟s experience of chasing the dream of becoming a hero, the writer revolted against the mediocrity and the waste of the youth When you suffer the reality of the obstruction and you can‟t achieve your ambition.There are 2 options: retreat or revolt.On the one hand, the youth whoworks as a small staff, don‟t want tomakeprogress and all day complain about boring life is retreating. Although maybe they have comfortable life, they will be washed out by the pace of social progress. On the other hand, whoever can clear his goals in the whole life continually and decide to achieve his ambition is a rebel.Now hypocritical behaviors are not welcomed certainly, but we still needpassion for life to fight against the mediocrity. In this way, Julien‟ssad ending not only showed thatpersonal revolt does not work, but also has more practicalsignificances to today's society.Write to this, I must talk about a“new creation” of the novel---- write the love in their souls betweenJulien and Mrs.Renal and at the same time write the love in their minds betweenJulien and Miss La Mole. Although the two noble women‟s ways of love are totally different---- one is deep, the otherisenthusiasm, they have two same basic points, that is---- dislike the class which they are in and the revolt against Feudal System. I still remember that whenJulien found his love had become a tool of gaining vanity,he said "I ruined myself", but after thiswrite told that "anarrogant and maliciou expression quickly replacedthe expression of the most sincere and strongest love."When thisnoble womanescapes from the slow life, with the method of losing thedignity shewinsthe love.”T he process of 2 sad love stories always accompanied by suspect fromJulien‟sinferiority and the situation that sometimes they are in an intimate relationship, sometimes they are in a distant relationship. Until the end of the life, the love just broke out the useless original spark, which made you feel a sick at heart.When I put my pen on the desk from writing, I am excited, because I find out the revelation of fighting against mediocrity, and I am moved by thetortuous and brave love. When someone talks about <<The Red and the Black>>, I can proudly say:”I’ve read it” followed by”I also have been lost in thinking”。
