Here are some ideal sleep music apps to choose from.CalmCalm is one of the most popular sleep music apps and its large library of relaxing and sleep-causing tracks is largely responsible for that. But I forgot the maps and here we were, late afternoon, last day of holiday, my daughter, my cousin and I, driving along a two-lane highway in Oregon. No other car in sight, and the sun had just gone down. Where was that sweet little village? It was supposed to be right along this river. We drove on, farther into the unknown river always at left as our guide. We kept passing farms and fields and now a few lights were coming out. In my head, I was doing a lot of self-criticism: Why didn’t we start earlier, bring the map and so on? My cousin and I were both impatient and stressed. My daughter, at least, was happy in the back seat, texting a friend. I pulled up on the shoulder of the road to think.Just the — Wow! Amazing! A new scene appeared. Where did it come from?Right there, out of nowhere: a magical misty landscape. Fields stretched in silent purple, with rows of tall trees, darkening in the dusk. I turned the car engine off. All was silent in the hot summer air. Beside us, a plum-covered river hardly moved between a border of trees, its dark lazy water reflecting the last light of day.How breathtaking! Where had it been? If I had seen even a bit of beauty while driving along, I could have stopped and taken a look. I had missed it all.We miss a lot, almost everything, in fact, in our world. Our task-focused filters (过滤器)takes care of that, selecting only what we need. We need to get to work. Have some lunch. We see what we need to see, often for purposes of survival. Gregory Bateson, speaking of beauty, said the judgment is selection of a fact. In our daily lives, who or what is doing the selecting? Can we make a change? Can we see further?1. Where might the author be heading for?A.A tourist attraction. B.A destination of his holiday.C.Her own home. D.Her cousin farm.2. What does the story intend to tell us?A.Slow down your pace and enjoy the beauty in life.B.Stay calm even if trapped in trouble.C.Keep positive because everything has a way out.D.Adjust your plan for the purpose of pleasure.3. The idea of biting into your burger made from insects or mixing some mealworms into your fried rice may take a little getting used to. But even if the thought of eating insects turns your stomach now, insects could and should form an important part of our diet.In the west, people have been eating insects for thousands of years and in Asia, South America and Africa, around 2,000 insect species are eaten. Yet in Europe, just 10% of people would be willing to replace meat with insects, according to a survey by the European Consumer Organization. To some, this unwillingness to eat insects is a missed opportunity.“Insects are a really important missing piece of the food system,” says Peter Alexander, a senior researcher in food security at the University of Edinburgh. “They are undoubtedly a superfood, a whole lot of nutrition in a really small package. ” Because of this, farmed insects could help deal with two of the world’s biggest problems at once: food insecurity and climate change.Agriculture is the biggest contributor to global biodiversity loss and a driver to greenhouse gas emissions. Raising animals accounts for 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Insect farming uses a small part of the land, energy and water required for traditional farming, and has a significantly lower carbon footprint. Then there’s the fact that insects are 12 to 25 times more efficient at changing their food into protein than animals. They need six times less feed than cattle, four times less than sheep and two times less than pigs. One of the main reasons is that insects are cold-blooded and therefore waste less energy keeping their body heat.As well as saving energy, insects can live off food that would otherwise be thrown away, contributing to the recycling industry. Insects can be fed agricultural waste. To complete the recycling chain, their excrement can be used to make crops grow fast and large and improve soil.“At the end of the day, you might have the healthiest, and most sustainable product, but unless it tastes nice so that people are willing to accept it, it may be a lot more difficult to get that across,” says Peter.1. Farmed insects could benefit us in _______.A.Enriching our dishes. B.Improving global biodiversity.C.Fighting global warming. D.Affecting traditional farming.2. Why can insects produce more protein?A.They feed on food with high protein. B.They consume less food.C.They break down food well. D.Their bodies need less energy to function.3. D.An Ignored Protein-Rich Superfood.4. Why do only famous people have biographies (传记)? This is the question two young sisters, 7-year-old Aishvarya, and 11-year-old Vaishali, asked their parents. They were reading famous people’s biographies in school and realized that they knew more about Beyonce, a f amous singer than about their own grandparents. So they decided to do something about it.They created “Grand Stories”, a workbook that helps grandchildren learn about their grandparents. Through answering a list of guided questions and telling stories, Grand Stories helps families learn more about each other. This family came from India to the US, and all four grandparents live very far away. Obviously through modern technology and some family visits, these young girls know their grandparents and love them very much—but they wonder why they don’t know more about their grandparents. For example, where did they grow up, and go to school? How they married and raised their families? What were their stories? Perhaps not surprisingly, many of the stories the family wanted to know reflect the “Do you know” questions that my workmate, Marshall Duke, and I developed to study how much people know of the family history. The sisters’ father told about the visit to India when the girls asked their own grandparents to write their biography. Because of his character, the grandfather didn’t share much during the interview. But then he stayed up all nights writing his stories, and when the father looked through the stories, he realized there was so much he’d never known ab out his own father! Through these stories the father felt closer to his own family. What these two young sisters have already discovered is how much we depend on knowing our family stories to understand who we are in the world and what our strength is. You can see moreabout Grand Stories at www. . Whether you’re 7 or 70, it’s never too early or too late to start sharing family stories.1. What made the two girls decide to know their family stories?A.Telling stories at school.B.Reading biographies at school.C.Showing their love for a singer.D.Being asked to create a workbook.2. What does the underlined word “developed” in paragraph 3 probably mean?A.designed. B.proved. C.described. D.imagined.3. Which of the following words can best describe the girls’ grandfather?A.Strict. B.Impatient. C.shy. D.Careless.4. What is the purpose of the text?A.To prove the power of family storytelling.B.To introduce ways of telling interesting family stories.C.To tell people about the two girls’ family.D.To encourage people to know their family stories.5. Every day is a gift, and if you look forward to enjoying each day, then you need to learn to make the most of your day. 1Have a great morning routine (常规). A good start will make you feel good and is sure to make the rest of your day good as well. Rise early and get ready for your new day. 2 Listen to good music. Have a wonderful breakfast. All these will help you start your day in a positive way.Make time for short breaks. Since we spend most of our day in the workplace, it is necessary to relax between different tasks. Set a timer on your phone or computer to remind you it's time to get up, leave your desk, go out and get some fresh air.3 Doing the same things every day is very boring. To prevent this, step out and take some time to do things that you have never done before. This will not only make a day exciting, but it’ll also build your confidence.Ask someone to be your accountability partner (责任同伴). 4 This person encourages you, supports you and loves you. He or she will help you get over difficulties and achieve your goals.Plan your schedule for the next day the night before. When the world was still populated by hunter-gatherers, small, tightly knit(联系) groups developed their own patterns of speech independent of each other. Some language experts believe that 10,000 years ago, when the world had just five to ten million people, they spoke perhaps 12,000 languages between them.Soon afterwards, many of those people started settling down to become farmers, and their languages too became more settled and fewer in number. In recent centuries, trade, industrialization, the development of the nation-state and the spread of universal compulsory education, especially globalisation and better communications in the past few decades, all have caused many languages to disappear, and dominant languages such as English, Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking over.At present, the world has about 6,800 languages. The distribution of these languages is hugely uneven. The general rule is that mild zones have relatively few languages. Often spoken by many people while hot, wet zones have lots, often spoken by small numbers. Europe has only around 200 Languages: the Americas about 1,000, Africa 2,400; and Asia and the Pacific perhaps 3,200, of which Papua New Guinea alone accounts for well over 800. The median number(中位数) of speakers is a mere 6,000, which means that half the worlds languages are spoken by fewer people than that.Already well over 400 of the total of 6,800 languages are close to extinction(消亡), with only a few elderly speakers left. Pick, at random, Busuu in Cameroon (eight remaining speakers), Chiapaneco in Mexico(150). Lipan Apache in the United States(two or three) or Wadjigu in Australia (one, with a question-mark): none of these seems to have much chance of survival.4.What can we infer about languages in hunter-gatherer times?A.They developed very fast. They settled in at a comfortable East Side cafe and within minutes, another customer was approaching their table.“Hey, aren’t you from Mississippi?” the elegant, white-haired writer remembered being aske d by a stranger. “I’m from Mississippi too.”Without a second thought, the woman joined the Welty’s table. When her dinner partner showed up, she also pulled up a chair.“They began telling me all the news of Mississippi,” Welty said. “I didn’t know what m y New York friends were thinking.”Taxis on a rainy New York night are rarer than sunshine. By the time the group got up to leave, it was pouring outside. Welty’s new friends immediately sent a waiter to find a cab. Heading back downtown toward her hotel, her big-city friends were amazed at the turn of events that had changed their Big Apple dinner into a Mississippi.“My friends said: ‘Now we believe your stories,’” Welty added. “And I said: ‘Now you know. These are the people that make me write them.Sitting on a sofa in her room, Welty, a slim figure in a simple gray dress, looked pleased with this explanation. “I don’t make them up,” she said of the characters in her fiction these last 50 or so years. “I don’t have to.”Beauticians, bartenders, piano players and people with purple hats, Welty’s people come from afternoons spent visiting with old friends, from walks through the streets beside her house, from conversations overheard on a bus.It annoys Welty that, at 78, her left ear has now given out. However, she continues to walk into life and notes the vivid life. Sometimes, sitting on a bus or a train, she hears only a fragment(片段) of a particularly interesting story, yet she quickly takes out a notebook and write something fantastic under her point of pen.8.What happened when Welty was with her friends at the cafe?A.Strangers joined her. Two years later, published “Sea Mystery at Our Back Door”, covering the loss of several planes and ships, including the loss of Flight 19. Flight 19 alone would be covered again in the April 1962 issue of American Legion magazine. In it, author Allan W. Eckert wrote that the flight leader had been heard saying, “We are entering white water. Nothing seems r ight. We don’t know where we are.” In the February 1964, the article “The Deadly Bermuda Triangle” argued that Flight 19 and other disappearances were just part of strange events in the area.②Triangle writers have used a number of supernatural ideas to explain the events. One explanation refers to leftover technology from the mysterious lost continent of Atlantis. Some of the Triangle writers related the events to UFOs. This idea was used by Steven Spielberg for his science fiction film Close Encounters of the Third Kind, in which the lost Flight 19 aircrews were taken by aliens.③But there are also some explanation relating to nature. For example, laboratory experiments carried out in Australia have proven that bubbles containing natural gas can sink a large ship by decreasing the density(密度) of the water. Because it has been assumed that the eruption of volcanoes(火山)may produce much natural gas, making large areas of bubbles under sea so that water is no longer able to provide enough supporting power for ships. If this were the case, such an area forming around a ship could cause it to sink very rapidly and without any warning.④Violent weather is likely to be another reason. Powerful storms forming in tropical(热带的)waters have caused thousands of deaths and caused billions of dollars in damage. Thesestorms have in the past caused a number of incidents related to the Triangle. 12.According to the passage, the loss of Flight 19 was first covered .A.in 1950 B.in 1952C.in 1962 D.in 196413.The sentenc e “Persons accepting the Bermuda Triangle as a ‘Death Triangle’ have offered a number of ways to explain it.” should be put in .A.①B.②C.③D.④14.According to paragraph 4, which one is NOT the reason for the disappearance of ships? A.the natural gas B.large areas of bubblesC.the eruption of volcanoes D.the increase of water density 15.What is the passage mainly about?A.The truth behind the disappearance in the Bermuda Triangle.B.The puzzle of the Bermuda Triangle and its explanations.C.Strange accidents that happened in the Bermuda Triangle.D.The exploration of the Bermuda Triangle in history.二、七选五Every animal sleeps, but the reason for this has remained foggy. When lab rats are not allowed to sleep, they die within a month. 16.One idea is that sleep helps us strengthen new memories. 17.We know that, while awake, fresh memories are recorded by reinforcing (加强) connections between brain cells, but the memory processes that take place while we sleep have been unclear.Support is growing for a theory that sleep evolved so that connections between neurons(神经元) in the brain can be weakened overnight, making room for fresh memories to form the next day. 18.Now we have the most direct evidence yet that he is right. 19.The synapses in the mice taken at the end of a period of sleep were 18 per cent smaller than those taken before sleep, showing that the connections between neurons weaken while sleeping. If Tononi’s theory is right, it would explain why, when we miss a night’s, we find i t harder the next day to concentrate and learn new information — our brains may have smaller room for new experiences.Their research also suggests how we may build lasting memories over time even though the synapses become thinner. The team discovered that some synapses seem to be protected and stayed the same size. 20.“You keep what matters,” Tononi says.A.We should also try to sleep well the night before.B.It’s as if the brain is preserving its most important memories.C.Similarly, when people go for a few days without sleeping, they get sick.D.The processes take place to stop our brains becoming loaded with memories.E.That’s why students do better in tests if they get a chance to sleep after learning.F.“Sleep is the price we pay for learning,” says Giulio Tononi, who developed the idea.G.Tononi’s team measured the size of these connections, or synapses, in the brains of 12 mice.三、完形填空My 9-year-old daughter and I were flying from Chicago to spend a week with my husband in Florida. The two people willingly act as part-time workers, enough hours between them to fulfill the duties of a full-time worker. If they each work half the job, for example, they each receive 50 per cent of the job’s wages, its holidays and its other benefits. Of course, some job sharers take a smaller or larger share of the responsibilities of the position, receiving a lesser or greater share of the benefits.Job sharing differs from conventional part-time work in that it occurs mainly in the more highly skilled and professional areas, which require higher levels of responsibility and employee commitment.Job sharing should not be confused with the term work sharing, which refers to increasing the number of jobs by reducing the number of hours of each existing job, thus offering moreposition to the growing number of unemployed people. Job sharing, by contrast, is not designed to address unemployment problems; its focus, rather, is to provide well-paid work for skilled workers and professionals who want more free time for other activities. As would be expected, women constitute the bulk of job shares. A survey carried out in 1988 by Britain’s Equal Opportunities Commission revealed that 78 per cent of shares were female, the majority of whom were between 20 and 40 years of age. Subsequent studies have come up with similar results. Many of these women were re-entering the job market after having had children, but they chose not to seek part-time work because it would have meant lower status. Job sharing also offered an acceptable shift back into full-time work after a long absence. The necessity of close cooperation when sharing a job with another person makes the actual work quite different from conventional one-position jobs. However, to ensure a greater chance that the partnership will succeed, each person needs to know the strengths, weaknesses and preferences of his or her partner before applying for a position. Moreover, there must be a fair division of both routine tasks and interesting ones. In sum, for a position to be job-shared well, the two individuals must be well matched and must treat each other as equals.21. In what way is work sharing different from job sharing?A. Work sharing requires more working hours.B. Work sharing provides a more satisfactory salary.C. Work sharing is aimed at creating more jobs.D. Work sharing depends on the employer’s decision.22. According to paragraph 4, young mothers preferred job sharing to conventional part-timework mainly because ______.A. they sought higher social statusB. they were over ideal working agesC. they had difficulty finding full-time jobsD. they had to take care of both work and family23. In job sharing the partners should ______.A. enjoy equal social statusB. have similar working experienceC. keep in touch with each otherD. know each other very well24. The main purpose of the passage is to ______.A. describe job sharing in generalB. discuss a way to tackle unemploymentC. recommend job sharing to womenD. compare job sharing with work sharingBWhy can some people sleep through noises like a honking car or flushing toilet, while others are awakened by the lightest sound? To find the answer, sleep researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital conducted an unusual study of 12 self-described deep sleepers. After tests confirmed that the healthy volunteers were solid sleepers, they took part in a three-night study in the university’s sleep laboratory. The participants spent the night in a big and comfortable room. But the room also included four speakers positioned near the top of the bed.During the night, the deep sleepers were subjected to 14 different recorded sounds, like street traffic, toilets flushing, an ice machine dispensing and an airplane flying overhead. Next door, the researchers monitored their sleep patterns and brain waves. As expected, all of the participants slept relatively well, but there were differences in how they responded to the noisy interruptions. Some of the sleepers didn’t wake up even when a sound was blasted at 70 decibels (分贝); others were awakened by sounds at 40 or 50 decibels. The researchers discovered that the difference in a sleeper’s reaction to noise could be predicted by the level of brain activity called “sleep spindles”. A sleep spindle is a burst of high-frequency brain activity coming from deep inside the brain during sleep. The source of the spindles is the thalamus, a part of the brain that sends sensory information to the rest of the cortex (皮层).Before the study, the Massachusetts researchers theorized (推理) that the spindles are the brain’s way of preventing sensory information from passing through the thalamus and waking the rest of the brain during sleep. They found that the sleepers who experienced the most sleep spindles during the night were also the soundest sleepers and were least likely to be awakened by noise.Scientists already know that most people become lighter sleepers with age, most likely because older people experience less “slow wave sleep”, which is the deepest stage of sleep. People also produce fewer sleep spindles as they age. But even when controlling for the stage of sleep a person was in, the number of sleep spindles still predicted their risk for awakening because of noise.More research is needed, but the findings suggest that a better understanding of sleep spindles could lead to new behavioral or drug therapies for people with sleep disorders. For instance, future studies may try to determine whether diet, exercise or other behaviors may influence the number of sleep spindles a person produces during the night.25. Some participants can sleep well through loud noises mainly because ______.A. their brains don’t respond to outside noisesB. their brains react differently to noisesC. they adapt to the environment quicklyD. they don’t pay attention to the monitors26. Scientists believe that the key to affecting deep sleep is ______.A. sleep spindlesB. stages of sleepC. sleep disordersD. sensory information27. It can be learned from the passage that ______.A. the older a deep sleeper becomes, the lighter his sleep must beB. the more “slow wave sleep” one experiences, the deeper sleep one hasC. the more frequently a sleeper’s brain works, the less information it sendsD. the deeper sleep people have, the more likely they will be awakened by noise28. From the passage we can predict ______.A. more factors in influencing sleep spindles may be discoveredB. more solid sleepers will take part in relative experimentsC. sleep spindles will be applied to changing one’s behaviorsD. deep sleepers will probably enjoy a more healthy lifeCThe healthy adolescent(青少年的) boy or girl likes to do the real things in life, to do the things that matter. He would rather be a plumber’s mate and do a real job that requires doing than learn about hydrostatics (流体静力学) sitting at a desk, without understanding what practical use they are going to be. A girl would rather look after the baby than learn about child care. Logically we should learn about things before doing them and that is probably why the experts enforce this in our educational system. But it is not the natural way — nor, in my view, the best way. The adolescent wants to do things first for only then does he appreciate the problems involved and want to learn more about them. They do these things better in primitive life, for there at puberty (青春期) the boy joins his father in making canoes, patching huts, going out fishing or hunting. He is serving his apprenticeship (学徒期) in the actual accomplishments of life. It is not surprising that anthropologists (人类学家) find that the adolescents of primitive communities do not suffer from the same neurotic (神经质的) “difficulties” as those of civilized life. This is not, as some assume, because they are permitted more sexual freedom, but because they are givenmore natural outlets (宣泄的途径) for their native interests and powers and are allowed to grow up freely into a full life of responsibility in the community. In the 19th century this was recognized in the apprenticeship system, which allowed the boy to go out with the master carpenter, or ploughman (把犁人), to engage in the actual work of carpentry or roof-mending, and so to learn his trade. In some agricultural colleges at the present time young men have to do a year’s work on a farm before their theoretical (理论的) training at college. The great advantage of this system is that it lets the apprentice see the practical problems before he sets to work learning how to solve them, and he can therefore take a more intelligent interest in his theoretical work.Since more knowledge of more things is now required in order to cope with the adult world, the period of growing-up to independence takes much longer than it did in a more primitive community, and the responsibility for such education, which formerly was in the hands of the parents, is now necessarily undertaken by experts at school. But that should not make us lose sight of the basic principle, namely the need and the desire of the adolescent to engage responsibly in the real pursuits of life and then to learn how —to learn through responsibility, not to learn before responsibility.29. According to the author, what is the natural way of education?A. Doing things while learning.B. Doing things before learning.C. Doing things as an apprentice.D. Learning practical knowledge first.30. The main advantage of the natural way of education, whether in primitive or modern times,is that learners ______.A. can learn the trade through solving problems at workB. can work with their masters throughout their learningC. are given opportunities to develop their interest firstD. are given more love and support in doing things and learning31. According to the context, “this” in the third paragraph refers to ______.A. the kind of skills boys learned from their fatherB. the difficulties modern adolescents experienceC. the amount of freedom in learning in primitive lifeD. the way of learning in primitive communities32. Which of the following sums up the author’s main point?A. The apprenticeship system was effective in learning.B. Learning to solve problems is learning through responsibility.C. Students develop their interest through learning.D. Students should be given more freedom in learning.DMaja Kazazic looked closely down into the aquarium (水族馆). For two years, she’d been watching the injured dolphin named Winter swim around the tank. From a distance, the dolphin seemed approachable enough. Still, as Kazazic prepared to jump into the water, a little panic gradually came into her excitement. The young woman eased herself into the pool. Despite her fear, she felt strong wearing her new leg. She was ready to make good on a promise from long ago.In second grade in Mostar, Yugoslavia, Kazazic’s five-year-old cousin, Jasmina, died of leukemia (白血病). Kazazic swore that she would honor the little girl by swimming with a dolphin, an animal they both liked. “Jasmina never got the chance to do it,” says Kazazic, 32, “so I decided that someday I’d do it for her.”In 1993, during the Bosnian civil war, 16-year-old Kazazic was badly injured. Her left leg was cut off just below the knee and was brought to the United States for treatment. A few months later, Kazazic received her first artificial leg. Because her right leg was also damaged, walking was still very painful. Nonetheless, she managed to graduate from a local high school. After receiving a BA in psychology, she moved to Florida’s Gulf Coast. She liked watching the dolphins play at the aquarium. A young dolphin, Winter, who had lost her tail in a crab trap, caught Kazazic’s eye: “She swam more like a shrimp (虾) than a dolphin.”After one doctor’s visit, trainers fit Winter with a high-tech tail. When it was done, Winter swam away fast. Kazazic was impressed. She approached the trainers, who put her in touch with the inventors. Within ten days, she had a new leg and she could walk without pain again.Eight months later, Kazazic was ready to keep the promise she had made in honor of Jasmina. “After being in a war zone, this should be a piece of cake,” Kazazic said as she lowered herself into the tank. She held out a hand to Winter, who approached cautiously, and then moved away. After a few minutes, the dolphin let Kazazic move her hand gently over her back. The two started an hour-long swim around the pool. When Kazazic climbed out, her parents hugged her. She would have shouted with joy had she not been aware of dolphins’sensitivity to noise.Instead she quietly said, “I felt I owed somebody something, and now I’ve paid my debt.”Out in the parking lot, she got into her car and shouted loudly and happily all the way.33. Punctuality(守时) is really a virtue, especially in a busy city.37.Punctuality is the main constituent(构成部分) of character. 38. On the other hand, a person who is always late shows his selfishness and thoughtlessness and he is not worthy to be friends with. Some people often say that they cannot always be punctual since traffic is so heavy thesedays. 39. As everybody knows, we might meet an unexpected jam on the roads, so we should leave a bit earlier for the appointment to ensure that we would not be late.40. When they finally arrive, they keep on saying sorry to their friends and then explain. The excuse is not always traffic jam. Sometimes they complain that they have met a friend on the road or have helped a blind man to cross the road. Some also like to blame their watches, the clocks at home or in the office.
