They have always complained, more or less justly, that their parents are out of touch with modern ways; that they are possessive and dominant; that they do not trust their childrento deal with crises; that they talk too much about certain problems —and that they have no sense of humour, at least in parent-child relationships.I think it is true that parents often underestimate their teenage children and also forget how they themselves felt when young.Young people often irritate their parents with their choices in clothes and hairstyles, in entertainers and music. This is not their motive. They feel cut off from the adult world into which they have not yet been accepted. So they create a culture and society of their own. Then, if it turns out that their music or entertainers or vocabulary or clothes or hairstyles irritate their parents, this gives them additional enjoyment. They feel they are superior, at least in a small way, and that they are leaders in style and taste.Sometimes you are resistant and proud because you do not want your parents to approve of what you do. If they did approve, it looks as if you are betraying your own age group. But in that case, you are assuming that you are the underdog: you can?t win but at least you can keep your honor. This is a passive way of looking at things. It is natural enough after long years of childhood, when you were completely under your parents? control. But it ignores the fact that you are now beginning to be responsible for yourself. If you plan to control your life, co-operation can be part of that plan. You can charm others, especially your parents, into doing things the way you want. You can impress others with your sense of responsibility and initiative, so that they will give you the authority to do what you want to do.31. The author is primarily addressing ________.A. parents of teenagersB. those who give advice to teenagersC. newspaper readersD. teenagers32. The first paragraph is mainly about________.A. the teenagers? criticism of their parentsB. misunderstandings between teenagers and their parentsC. the dominance of the parents over their childrenD. the teenagers? ability to deal with crises33. Teenagers tend to have strange clothes and hairstyles because they ________.A. want to show their existence by creating a culture of their ownB. have a strong desire to be leaders in style and tasteC. have no other way to enjoy themselves betterD. want to irritate their parents34. Teenagers do not want their parents to approve of whatever they do because they________.A. have already been accepted into the adult worldB. feel that they are superior in a small way to the adultsC. are not likely to win over the adultsD. have a desire to be independent35. To improve parent-child relationships, teenagers are advised to be ________.A. obedientB. co-operativeC. responsibleD. independentPassage 2The effects of long-distance running are psychologically uplifting. In a world full of tensions, cruelty and chaos, runninghelps reinforce the view that life is good and lead the runner to tranquility and harmony.Long-distance running helps a person forget pressing family problems as well as job-related annoyances. An example comes quickly to mind. One day I had a terrible fight with my landlady over some foolish incident. We screamed and yelled at each other.A few minutes later, I set out on my daily run. By the end of the first mile, the argument seemed like a bad dream. At the end of the second, the reason for it seemed trivial. By the end of the fourth mile, I was filled with feelings of remorse and forgiveness toward the landlady. I bought her a beautiful rose, which I gave her as soon as I stepped inside the house. All was quickly well again between us. Running has that kind of effect on most runners. It makes us feel benign and serene.Incorporating long-distance running into a daily routine will significantly change a runner?s life-style. After I had been running for some time I found that I had more energy and could do more. My days grew longer, because I seemed to need less sleep; what sleep I did get seemed more restful. My body became thinner, smoother, firmer. Running also produces a healthful feeling of pleasant excitement, which comes from adherence to a strict routine and the improved physical condition. So, running makes me feel good, about myself and about the world. There are other long-term effects of running which are beneficial. But what benefits running does offer me are already enough to make me addicted to the sport for the rest of my life.36. We can learn from the passage that the author?s attitude towards long-distance running is _________.A. indifferentB. popularC. positiveD. negative37. The meaning of “reinforce” in t he first paragraph is probably ________.A. negateB. createC. criticizeD. strengthen38. The author gives his own example in the second paragraph to illustrate that________.A. it is foolish to quarrel with the landlordB. long-distance running helps you to forget your problems and annoyanceC. we should be friendly with othersD. long-distance running makes you stronger39. Why does long-distance running produce a healthful feeling of pleasant excitement?A. Because you adhere to a routine.B. Because your physical condition is improved.C. Because you meet less unpleasant things in your life.D. Both A and B40. What does the author mean by the last sentence of the passage?A. He will keep the good habit of long-distance running.B. He will ask his family to run with him.C. He will write an article about the benefit of running.D. He will search for other long-term effects of running for the rest of his life.Passage 3Scientists estimate that about 35,000 other objects, too smallto detect with radar but detectable with powerful Earth-based telescopes, are also circling the Earth at an altitude of 200 to 700 miles. This debris poses little danger to us on the Earth, but since it is traveling at average relative speeds of six miles per second , it can severely damage expensive equipment in a collision. This threat was dramatized by a cavity one-eighth of an inch in diameter created in a window of a United States space shuttle in 1983. The pit was determined to have been caused by a collision with a speck of paint traveling at a speed of about two to four miles per second. The window had to be replaced. As more and more nations put satellites into space, the risk of collision can only increase. Measures are already being taken to control the growth of orbital debris. The United States has always required its astronauts to bag their wastes and return them to Earth. The United States Air Force has agreed to conduct low-altitude rather than high-altitude tests of objects it puts into space so debris from tests will reenter the Earth's atmosphere and burn up. Extra shielding will also reduce the risk of damage. For example, 2,000 pounds of additional shielding is being considered for each of six space-station crew modules. Further, the European Space Agency, an international consortium, is also looking into preventive measures.41. It can be inferred from the passage that debris was harmful to one of the space shuttles because the debris was________.A. largeB. moving very fastC. radioactiveD. burning uncontrollably42. What effect did orbital debris have on one of the spaceshuttles?A. It removed some of the paintB. It damaged one of the windowsC. It caused a loss of altitudeD. It led to a collision with a space station43. The word “them” in the second paragraph (Line 4) refers to which of the following?.A. AstronautsB. WastesC. TestsD. Crew modules44. Which of the following questions is NOT answered by the information in the passage? .A. How can small objects orbiting the Earth be seenB. What is being done to prevent orbital debris from increasingC. Why is the risk of damage to space equipment likely to increaseD. When did the United States Air Force begin making tests in space45. What are the main points included in the second paragraph?A. More and more nations put satellites into space.B. The space race is a waste of money.C. Orbital debris will reduce the risk of damage.D. Measures are being taken for protecting spacing vehicles against damage by space debris. Part 3 ClozeIt's never easy to admit you are in the 1 . 2 human, we all need to know the art of apologizing. Look 3 with honesty and think how 4 you've judged roughly, said unkind things, pushedyourself ahead at the 5 of a friend. Then count the 6 when you indicated clearly and truly that you were sorry. A bit frightening, isn't it? Frightening because some deep wisdom in us knows that when even a small wrong has been committed, some mysterious moral feeling is disturbed, and it strays out of 7 until fault is acknowledged and regret expressed.I remember a doctor friend, the late Clarence Lieb, telling me about a man who came to him8 a variety of signs: headaches, insomnia (失眠) and stomach trouble. No physical 9 could be found. Finally Dr. Lieb said to the man, “Unless you tell me what? s 10 you, I can?t help you.”After some hesitation, the man 11 that, as executor ( 指定遗嘱执行人) of his father?s will, he had been cheating his brother, who lived abroad, of his inheritance. 12 and there the wise old doctor made the man write to his brother asking for forgiveness and 13 a cheque as the first 14 in restoring their good relation. In today?s material world, making money or becoming wealthy symbolizes a person?s success and capability. Many people just make every effort, pay any price to attain greater wealth. With money, they can buy nice, large apartments in nice neighborhood; with money, they can own stately luxury cars. Wealth seems to bring all happiness in life.In my opinion, people cannot do anything without money, but money is not everything. What money will bring you depends on your personal belief and goal in life. If you are kind enough to help others, especially the poor, money is a good thing to you. By using money you can do much more for the benefit of people and your country, and it will bring you your own happiness. If you make money just for your own needs, you?ll never be satisfied or happy. In a word, you should have money spent for more people. Only then can money be the source of your happiness.试题二ⅠVocabular y and Structure (30%)Directions: This section is to test the use of vocabulary and structure. It is well known that many of our problems—everything, in fact, from the generation gap to the high divorce rate to some forms of mental illness--- are caused at least in part by failure to communicate. We do not tell each other what is disturbing us. The result is emotional difficulty of one kind or another. By using the quiet family hour to1discuss our problems, we might get to know each other better, and to like each other better.六(Reading comprehension(20ˊ)AFor some minutes, all was quiet in the street. Then from across the street someone came walking. It looked like a man of middle height, dressed in a big raincoat, a soft hat and rubber-soled boots or shoes, and making little sound whilewalking. No one was in sight. It was a street with two rows of aboutfifty small houses and there were three lamps on either side. The lamp nearest to the child’s house could be seen clearly, but the others were almost hidden by the smoky air. A car passed the end of the street and its lights showed faintly, but clearly enough to show the s mooth skin of a woman’s face. The car disappeared as the woman, wrapped up in her coat, reached the doorway of the child’s house. She put a key in the lock quickly, pushed the door open and stepped inside, then closed the door without looking round. She began to breathe hard. She leaned against the door for a moment, then straightened up as if with an effort, and walked towards the door of the front room, the passage leading to the kitchen, and the narrow staircase. She hesitated outside the door, then went up the stairs quickly but with hardly a sound. There was enough light from the narrow hall to show the four doors leading off a small landing(楼梯平台). Shepushed each door open in turn and shone a torch inside, and thelight fell upon beds, walls, furniture, a bathroom hand-basin, a mirror which flashed brightness back; but this was not what the woman was looking for. She turned away and went downstairs, and hesitated again at the foot of the stairs, then turned towards the kitchen. Clearly there was nothing there, or in the small washroom that she wanted. Two rooms remained; the front room and a smaller one next to it. She opened the front room door. After a moment, she saw the child’s bed and the child.1. Ten inches of rain may be enough for many plants to survive (存活)if the rain is spread throughout the year, If it falls, within one or two months and the rest of the yearis dry, those plants may die and a desert may form.Sand begins as tiny pieces of rock that get smaller and smaller as wind and weather wear them down. Sand dunes (沙丘) are formed as winds move the sandacross the desert. Bit by bit, the dunes grow over the years, always moving with the winds and changing the shape. Most of them are only a few feet tall, but they can grow to be several hundred feet high. There is, however, much more to a desert than sand. In the desertsof thesouthwestern United States, cliffs (悬崖) and deep valleys were formed fromthick mud that once lay beneath a sea more than millions of years ago. Over the centuries, the water dried up. Wind, sand , rain, heat and cold all wore away at the remaining rocks. The faces of the desert mountains are always changing —very, very slowly —as these forces of nature continue to work on the rock. Most deserts have a surprising variety of life. There are plants, animals and insects that :have adapted to life in the desert. During the heat of the day, a visitor may see very few signs of living things, but as the air begins to cool in the evening, the desert comes to life. As the sun begins to rise again in the sky, the desert once again becomes quiet and lonely.9. Many plants may survive in deserts when___________.A. the rain is spread out in a yearB. the rain falls only in a few weeksC. there is little rain in a yearD. it is dry all the year round 10. Sand dunes are formed when___________.A. sand piles up graduallyB. there is plenty of rain in a yearC. the sea has dried up over the yearsD. pieces of rock get smaller411. The underlined sentence in the third paragraph probably meansthat in a desert there is____________.A. too much sandB. more sand than beforeC. nothing except sandD. something else besides sand 12 It can be learned from the text that in a desert____________.A. there is no rainfall throughout the yearB. life exists in rough conditionsC. all sand dunes are a few feet highD. rocks are worn away only by wind and heatDLetter to Editor of TV WeeklyDear Sir/Madam,I read Alison Burnham’s review of When we were 12, and I do not agree withher. I thought the programme was wonderful — I found the old news picturesreally interesting — they helped to bring to life the stories the people were telling. The programme reminds me of many things from my own childhood. For example, one day when I was about five, I was going to school on the bus by myself (this was the late 1960s). My mother had given me exactly the right money for a return ticket. I held out my hand with the money init — one bigcoin on top of one little coin. The bus conductor took the big top coin only and she gave me a ticket, but it was a pink one for a single journey. I needed a white one for a return journey, but I was too frightened to say anything. When school finished for the day, Icouldn’t catch the bus home — I had to walk. As agrown-up, whenever I’ve been in a situation where I need to say something or take some action, this early memory of my bus ride comes back to me, and I’mable to take control of the situation.I would like to say to the director, Bret Chrysler, carry on making this kind of programme. Too much TV these days is quiz shows and so called “realityprogrammes”.I appreciate the human story that can make me laugh and cry.Yours faithfully,Chris Daniels13. What is Chris Daniels’ purpose of writing this letter?A. To persuade Bret Chrysler to turn away from quiz shows.B. To entertain other readers with old news pictures.C. To express his appreciation of the programme.D. To have his story told on the programme.14. Chris Daniels tells the story about the bus ticket to .A. describe how painful his early experience was5B. draw a direct response from Alison BurnhamC. show how the programme made him thinkD. teach the readers of TV Weekly a lesson15. According to the passage, Chris Daniels had to walk home because .A. he hadn’t got a return ticketB. he had lost his bus ticketC. he didn’t like big crowdsD. he missed the bus home16. What does Chris Daniels now think about his experience on the bus?A. He should have told the conductor then.B. He should have been well treated.C. He regrets going to school alone.D. He wishes it hadn’t happened.ET-shirts out; uniforms inSchool uniforms are becoming more and more popular across the U.S.A. That’s no surprise, because they offer many benefits. They immediate ly end the powerful social sorting and labeling (标记) that come from clothing. If allstudents are dressed in the same way, they will not pay too much attention to their clothing, and some of them will not be laughed at for wearing the “wrong” clothes. Some people are against the strict rule of school uniforms, but they do not realize that students already accept a kind of rule — wanting to look just liketheir friends. The difference is that the clothing students choosefor themselves creates social barriers; school uniforms tear those barriers down.As in other places, uniforms remind the wearers of their purposesand duties. For example, when a man or woman puts on a police uniform,he or she becomes, for a time, the symbol (象征) of law and order. The uniform means tothe wearer his or her special duties and sends the same message to everyone the wearer meets. People with different jobs wear uniforms of one kind or another. For students, the school uniform reminds them that their task for the six or seven hours they are in school is to get an education. Some parents are unhappy about uniforms, saying that school uniforms will affect their children’s “creativity.” First, as noted above, the clothes studentschoose to wear do not necessarily express their individuality (个性). They justcopy their classmates. Second, students have the rest of the day to be as creative as they like. While they’re in school, their job is to master reading, writing, and maths; this should take up all the creativity they have. Mastery of those skills will be good for the students to build up their creativity in every way.17. In Paragraph 1, the word “benefits” probably means .6A. tasksB. messagesC. differencesD. advantages18. From the passage we learn that uniforms in general .A. prevent the wearers from being laughed atB. help the wearers keep their duties in mindC. are seen as a symbol of powerD. help to create social barriers19. Some people are against school uniforms because .A. they fail to realize that students have accepted the uniformsB. they believe that uniforms will make students less creativeC. they don’t agree that uniforms can remove social barriersD. they think that school uniforms are too popular20. The author would probably agree that .A. it makes no difference whether to wear school uniforms or notB. students’ individuality may not come from school educationC. students’ creativity is related to the clothes they chooseD. school uniforms help to create equality among students七、Cloze(10ˊ)On May 27, 1995, our life was suddenly changed. Reading ComprehensionNow let us look at how we read. When we read a printed text, our eyes move across a page in short, jerky movement. We recognize words usually when our eyes are still when they fixate. Each time they fixate, we see a group of words. This is known as the recognition span or the visual span. The length of time for which the eyes stop ---the duration of the fixation ----varies considerably from person to person. It also varies within any one person according to his purpose in reading and his familiarity with the text. Furthermore, it can be affected by such factors as lighting and tiredness. Unfortunately, in the past, many reading improvement courses have concentrated too much on how our eyes move across the printed page. As a result of this misleading emphasis on the purely visual aspects of reading, numerous exercises have been devised to train the eyes to see more words at one fixation. For instance, in some exercises, words are flashed on to a screen for, say, a tenth or a twentieth of a second. One of the exercises has required students to fix their eyes on some central point, taking in the words on either side. Such word patterns are often constructed in the shape of rather steep pyramids so the reader takes in more and more words at each successive fixation. All these exercises are very clever, but it’s one thing to improve a person’s ability to see words and quite another thing to improve his abili ty to read a text efficiently. Reading requires the ability to understand the relationship between words. Consequently, for these reasons, many experts have now begun to question the usefulness of eye training, especially since any approach which trains a person to read isolated words and phrases would seem unlikely to help him in reading a continuous text.1. They say that people should be allowed to die with dignity (尊严) and to decide when they want to die. These individuals often speak a different language and have their own particular custom and manners. These differences can create problems. For example, in France, business meetings begin promptly at the designated time and everyone is expected to be there. Foreign business people who are tardy are often left outside to be kept waiting as a means of letting them know the importance of promptness. Unless one is aware of such expected behaviors he may end up insulting the people with whom he hopes to establish trade relations.A second traditional problem is that of monetary conversions. For example, if a transac tion is conducted with Russia, payment may be made in rubles. Of course, this currency is of little value to the American firm. It is, therefore, necessary to convert the foreign currency to American dollars. How much are these Russian rubies worth in terms of dollars? This conversion rate is determined by every market, where the currencies of countries are bought and sold. Thus there is an established rate, although it will often fluctuate from day to day. For example, the ruble may be worth 0.75on Monday and 0.72on Tuesday because of an announced wheat shortage in Russia. In addition, there is the dilemma associated with converting at 0.72. Some financial institutions may be unwilling to pay this price, feeling that the ruble will sink much lower over the next week. As aresult, conversion may finally come at 0.69. These "losses" must be accepted by the company as one of the costs of doing business overseas.A third unique problem is trade barriers. For one reason or another, all countries impose trade barriers on certain goods crossing their borders. Some trade barriers are directly related to exports. For example, the United States permits strategic military material to be shipped abroad only after government permission has been obtained. Most trade barriers, however, are designed to restrict imports. Two of the most common import barriers are quotas and tariffs.1. What is the relationship between culture and international trade?A. Cultures in different countries may help establish trade relations.B. Companies can do business overseas without paying attention to different cultures.C. Misunderstanding in international trade may result from different cultures.D. Different cultures can help people understand each other better.2. What is done toward business people who are late in France?A. They are often left outdoors waiting.B. They are often insulted.C. They often suffer from coldness.D. They often feel angry.3. They have always complained, more or less justly, that their parents are out of touch with modern ways; that they are possessive and dominant; that they do not trust their children to deal with crises; that they talk too much about certain problems —and that they have no sense of humour, at least in parent-child relationships.I think it is true that parents often underestimate their teenage children and also forget how they themselves felt when young.Young people often irritate their parents with their choices in clothes and hairstyles, in entertainers and music. But in that case, you are assuming that you are the underdog: you can’t win but at least you can keep your honor. This is a passive way of looking at things. It is natural enough after long years of childhood, when you were completely under your parents’ control. The first paragraph is mainly about________.A. the teenagers’ criticism of their parentsB. misunderstandings between teenagers and their parentsC. the dominance of the parents over their childrenD. the teenagers’ ability to deal with crises33. In a world full of tensions, cruelty and chaos, running helps reinforce the view that life is good and lead the runner to tranquility and harmony.Long-distance running helps a person forget pressing family problems as well as job-related annoyances. An example comes quickly to mind. One day I had a terrible fight with my landlady over some foolish incident. We screamed and yelled at each other. A few minutes later, I set out on my daily run. It makes us feel benign and serene.Incorporating long-distance running into a daily routine will significantly change a runner’s life-style. We can learn from the passage that the author’s attitude towards long-distance running is _________.A. indifferentB. popularC. positiveD. negative37. The meaning of “reinforce” in th e first paragraph is probably ________.A. negateB. createC. criticizeD. strengthen38. He will search for other long-term effects of running for the rest of his life.Passage 3Scientists estimate that about 35,000 other objects, too small to detect with radar but detectable with powerful Earth-based telescopes, are also circling the Earth at an altitude of 200 to 700 miles. As more and more nations put satellites into space, the risk of collision can only increase.Measures are already being taken to control the growth of orbital debris. What effect did orbital debris have on one of the space shuttles?A. Look 3 with honesty and think how 4 you've judged roughly, said unkind things, pushed yourself ahead at the 5 of a friend. Finally Dr. Lieb said to the man, “Unless you tell me what’ s 10 you, I can’t help you.”After some hesitation, the man 11 that, as executor ( 指定遗嘱执行人) of his father’s will, he had been cheating his brother, who lived abroad, of his inheritance. 12 and there the wise old doctor made the man write to his brother asking for forgiveness and 13 a cheque as the first 14 in restoring their good relation. In today’s ma terial world, making money or becoming wealthy symbolizes a person’s success and capability. If you make money just for your own needs, you’ll never be s atisfied or happy. In a word, you should have money spent for more people. Only then can money be the source of your happiness.试题二ⅠVocabulary and Structure (30%)Directions: This section is to test the use of vocabulary and structure. There are 20 incomplete sentences in it.
