Summer Start
Summer Start is a six-week program designed specifically for international undergraduate and graduate
students. This is a for-credit program; students receive six credits towards their degree. During the program, you
must live on CCA'sSan Franciscocampus.
Tuition includes six units of discounted graduate college credit, which will include books, field trip expenses
and one-on-one tutoring. Housing fees include six weeks at CCA's San Francisco Panoramic Residence.
Company-Customized Programs
CCA's Office of Special Programs can design customized workshops to develop and strengthen employee skills
within your company. Customized programs have included:
An Ideation Sketching class, for the design team of a national clothing retailer, scheduled Friday afternoons
onSan Franciscocampus. Software-specific workshops, for designers from a national paper products and gifts retailer, scheduled in a
two-day workshop format during the week on ourOaklandcampus.

It is that time of year when people need to lock their cars. It’ s not because there are a lot of criminals
running around stealing cars. Rather, it’ s because of the good-hearted neighbors who want to share their harvest.
Especially with this year’s large crop, leaving a car unlocked in my neighborhood is an invitation for someone to
stuff it full of zucchini(西葫芦).
My sister-in-law, Sharon, recently had a good year for tomatoes. She and her family had eaten and canned so
many that they began to feel their skin turn slightly red. That ’ s when she decided it was time to share
herblessings.She started calling everyone she knew. When that failed, she began to ask everyone in the
neighborhood like a politician, eventually finding a neighbor delighted to have the tomatoes. “ Feel free to take
whatever you want,”Sharontold her. She felt happy that she could help someone and that the food didn’t go to
waste.
A few days later,Sharonanswered the door. There was the neighbor, holding some bread. The neighbor smiled
pleasantly, “I want to thank you for all of the tomatoes, and I have to admit that I took a few other things and hope you wouldn’t mind.”
Sharoncouldn’t think of anything else in her garden that had been worth harvesting and said so. “Oh, but you
did,” the neighbor said. “You had some of the prettiest zucchini I’ve ever seen.”
Sharonwas confused. Zucchini in her garden? They hadn’ t even planted any zucchini. But her neighbor
insisted that there really were bright-green zucchini in her garden. The two of them walked together into the
backyard. When the neighbor pointed at the long green vegetables,Sharonsmiled, “ Well, actually, those are
cucumbers that we never harvested, because they got too big, soft and bitter for eating or canning.”
The neighbor looked atSharon, shock written all over her face. Then she smiled, and held out the bread that
she had shared all over the neighborhood, “I brought you a loaf of cucumber bread. I hope you like it.”

我家屋后有一亩多空地，泥土里时常翻出墙砖的小块来。我想空地废弃未免可惜，向熟识的农人说：“我要雇一个人在那里种菜，兼做些杂事，看有相当的人可以荐来试试。”
劳动是人生的真义，从此可以得到精神上真实的愉快，我热烈而深切地期望着。
农人福堂因此被荐到我家来了。他紫赤的皮肤，粗糙而有坚皮的手，直视而不灵动的眼睛，嘴周围短而黄的胡子，都和别的农人没甚分别；但他还有一种悒郁的神情，将农人固有的浑朴无虑的特征笼罩住。
“我从小就种田，米麦菜豆都种过，都会。”他的语音很诚恳，欲将自己的经历称述得详细而动听，但是他仅能说这么一句。
“那很好，我屋后那片空地将由你去种。”
他去察看了他新的工作地：“那里可以划作二十畦，二十天之后，每畦可出一担菜哩。”我也想：土地真足赞颂呀，生生不息，取之无尽。
福堂带来一柄四齿耙，五斤多重，他举起高出头顶一尺光景，用力往下垦，四齿齐没入泥里。他那执柄端的左手向上一捉，再举起耙来，泥土便松了一方，砖瓦的小块一显露。他工作了两个多钟点，把空地的六分之一翻松了，坐在阶上吸黄烟休息。
我希望、艳羡的心情，在他下第一耙的时候已欲进溢而出，人生真实的愉快的滋味，这回我可要尝一尝了。他一停手，我急急地执着耙的柄，学着他那姿势和动作工作起来。但是那柄耙似乎不服从我的样子：我举它起来时，它在空中只是前后左右地摇晃；着地时它的四齿入土仅一寸光景；我再用力将它举起，平而结实的泥土上只有四个掘松的痕迹。我绝不灰心，再下第二耙，第三……不到二十耙，我再也不能举起了。呼吸急促了，外面的空气钻入我的鼻管，几乎容受不得。
福堂在石阶上敲去烟管里面的烟灰，说道：“这个不是先生做得来的，你还是捡砖瓦罢。待我先耙成几畦，你就可以下菜秧了。”
我服从他的指挥，况且捡砖瓦一样是一种劳动。那句“就可以下菜秧”又何等地可喜，何等地足以勖勉我。我两手不停地拾起砖瓦，投在粗竹丝编的大畚箕里。他继续先前的工作，手里那柄耙一上一下，着地的声音沉重而调匀，竟像一架机器。泥土的气息一阵一阵透入鼻管，引起一种新鲜而快适的感觉。 我看福堂造畦，心里很佩服他。他不用尺量，只将耙轻轻地爬别，自然成了极正确的长方形的畦，而且各个畦的面积都相等呢!至于下秧是我的工作了，插满了一畦，我又提一桶水来灌溉。
