1.Nickel的价值仅高于penny，是值五美分的硬币。
Nickel通常指一种银白色的金属, 镍，五分硬币里含有镍，所以称为nickel。
今天要学的习惯用语是：nickel-and-dime。
Dime是值十美分的硬币。
Dime的价值虽然是nickel的两倍，但是dime也只是一枚很小的硬币，而且dime跟nickel相比是既小又薄，原因是过去曾经用比镍贵重得多的银子来铸造dime。
Nickel-and-dime既可以被当作一个动词来用，也可以作为一个形容词。
我们还是通过例句来领会它的意思吧。
先听一位爸爸在抱怨自己两个十多岁的子女老向父母要零花钱，数目虽然不大，但是长年累月、积少成多，也成为负担了。

Top dollar在这里指的是向他提供高额薪金。
然而top dollar有时候也可以指很高的费用。
例如在这句话里：That's the best hotel in New York, but it costs you top dollar to stay there。
这句话的意思是：那是纽约最好的旅馆，但是住在那儿费用昂贵。
今天要学的第二个习惯用语是： dollars to doughnuts。
Doughnut是油炸的甜面包圈，也称为多福饼。
美国人喜欢就着咖啡吃doughnuts当早餐。
Dollars to doughnuts这个习惯用语起源于一百多年前。
当时的dollar可比现在值钱得多，即使一美元也可以买好些东西，而当年的doughnuts便宜极了，只要几美分一个。
这样说来dollars的价值相当于几百个doughnuts，要是拿几美元的价值跟区区几个面包圈的价值相比，美元的优势当然不在话下，于是人们开始用dollars to doughnuts来表示这种以大拿小、十拿九稳的意思了。

今天要学的第三个习惯用语是： bet one's bottom dollar。
Bet one's bottom dollar 最初是美国西部牛仔之间的常用语。
我们知道bottom是底部，而bottom dollar是口袋底下剩下的最后那一块钱，所以bet one's bottom dollar原来的意思是尽其所有地打赌。
什么情况下人们才会这样做呢？多半是对自己打赌会赢非常有把握的情况下才敢于冒这个风险。
好，我们听个例子这位先生要告诉我们他准备把全部积蓄都购买华尔街最近发行的一种新股票，原因是他的大学同学出于同窗交情私下把这种股票看涨的前景跟他通了气。

这里的习惯用语bet my bottom dollar on something意思是“对某事有绝对的把握”。

也许有人觉得bet one's bottom dollar这个习惯用语和刚才学的习惯用语dollars to doughnuts没有区别。
这两个习惯用语意思确实接近，但是仍然有程度上的差别；人们用dollars to doughnuts来表示“相当有把握的”，但是bet one's bottom dollar却表示“有百分之百的绝对把握”。
