They were originally used during the Renaissance period for various purposes, including hiding one's identity during political events or simply for entertainment during celebrations and carnivals. Today, Venetian masks are symbols of the city's rich heritage and are often worn during the annual Carnival of Venice.I was immediately drawn to the vibrant colors and intricate designs of the masks displayed in the shop. Each mask seemed to tell a different story, showcasing the creativity and craftsmanship of the artisans who made them. After browsing through the various options, I finally settled on a beautiful hand-painted mask that featured delicate floral patterns and shimmering gold accents. The process of purchasing the mask was just as memorable as the mask itself. The shop owner, a friendly Venetian man, shared with us the history and significance of the masks while demonstrating the traditional techniques used to create them. He explained that each mask is meticulously hand-crafted by skilled artisans using a combination of paper mache, plaster, and acrylic paint.I was fascinated by the attention to detail and the amount of effort that went into making each mask a unique work of art. I could sense the passion and pride that the artisans had for their craft, which made me appreciate my purchase even more. It was not just a souvenir; it was a piece of Venetian history and culture that I could take home with me.Every time I look at the mask hanging on my wall, I am reminded of the unforgettable experience I had in Venice and the connection I now have to this enchanting city. It serves as a tangible reminder of the beauty and creativity that can be found in every corner of the world, waiting to be discovered and cherished. In conclusion, buying the hand-painted mask from Venice was not just a simple souvenir purchase; it was a meaningful and enriching experience that allowed me to connect with a newculture and appreciate the artistry of a traditional craft. The concept of sustainable tourism strives to harmonise and reconcile issues of intergenerational equity, and the goals of economic growth, environmental protection and social justice. It recognises the need for fairness between local individuals and groups, and between hosts and guests (Mbaiwa, 2005). If the concept of sustainable tourism is transformed into action, it is expected to con-tribute to the sustainability of the environment, social and cultural resources and overall socio-economic development. The increasing popularity of the concept derives from the widely held view that there is a need to alter current forms of consumption that perceive existing resources as being infinite.

This paper looks at issues surrounding sustainable tourism as a tool for local socio-economic development in Kenya, using the case study of Mombasa Resort Town. Illustrated by primary data from field interviews and surveys in Mombasa, backed by secondary data, it finds that due to the nature of the Kenyan tourism industry (external control and management of tourism establishments, limited local involve-ment and high leakage rates), the industry has not played an effective role in local socio-economic development. Ways forward are suggested.

emerging tourist-generating regions, particularly South-east Asia (Table 1). The country receives over 6% of the total international tourist arrivals to Africa, and the relative importance of tourism in Kenya’s economy has risen steadily over the last 40 years (Kenya Government, 2004). However, to be of any meaning to marginalised local communities and individuals, especially in developing coun-tries such as Kenya, tourism development should be part of a broader alternative policy framework that is designed to achieve a sustainable society. Sustainable tourism development should, therefore, not be seen as an end in itself, but as one of the several alternative development strategies that can assist local commu-nities overcome their socio-economic and developmental weaknesses, preserve their strengths and enhance their developmental opportunities.
