We learned about holidays like Diwali, Chinese New Year, Day of the Dead,and more. The best part was when we had to research a holiday and make a presentation about it for the class.I chose to do my presentation on the Japanese holiday of Obon. Obon is like an annual festival to honor ancestors who have passed away. Families return to their ancestral homes and leave offerings like fruits and flowers. There are also special dances performed during Obon called Bon Odori. I loved learning about all the different traditions.We also practiced describing holiday activities using present progressive tense, like "They are decorating the house" or "We are not traveling this year." At the end of the unit we had an amazing potluck party where each student brought in a dish representing a different cultural holiday. It was so delicious!Unit 3 has been all about describing places and giving directions. We've learned prepositions like behind, under, next to, and across from. We've also practiced using there is/there are, like "There is a big park across the street" or "There aren't any restaurants near here."One of the activities we did was give directions to a pretend visitor in our town. We had to describe how to get to different places like the library, movie theater, or our favorite restaurant. Itwas pretty tricky having to remember all the vocabulary for left, right, straight, etc. But it was good practice.For the unit project, we had to make a map of an imaginary town and write about what is there. On my map, I included things like a school, hospital, mall, and park. Then I wrote descriptive paragraphs like "There is a big hospital on Oak Street next to the fire station. Across from the hospital there is a nice park with a playground." Overall, it was a challenging but fun project.Those are the highlights from my first three English units this semester! I've really enjoyed the engaging activities, group projects, and opportunities to be creative. My speaking, writing, and vocabulary abilities have improved a lot. I especially love learning about cultures from around the world.English class has definitely been my favorite subject so far. My teacher makes it fun and easy to participate. I feel much more confident using English now compared to the beginning of the year. I'm already looking forward to the next few units coming up after spring break.
