Lately social scientists have begun to ask if culture is found just in humans, or if some animals have a culture too. When we speak of culture, we mean a way of life a group of people have in common. Culture includes the beliefs and attitudes we learn. It is the patterns of behavior that help people to live together. It is also the patterns of behavior that make one group of people different from another group. Our culture lets us make up for having lost out strength, claws, long teeth, and other defenses. Instead we use tools, cooperate with one another, and communicate with language. But these aspects of human behavior, or “culture”, can also be found in the lives of certain animals. Animals can make tools, for example. We used to think that the ability to use tools was the dividing line between human beings and other animals. Lately, however, we have found that this is not the case. Chimpanzees can not only use tools but actually make tools themselves. Animals can also share knowledge with each other and use their own language to communicate. So it may be important for us to know that the line dividing us from animals is not as clear as we used to think.1.When we talk about “culture”, we mean __________.A.book language of behavior we learnB.the patterns of behavior we learnC.traditional ideasD.people’s habits2.We thought ________ was the biggest difference between human beings and other animals.A.cooperating with one anotherB.communicating with languageC.using toolsD.losing long teeth3.The example of chimpanzees shows __________.A.animals are the same as human beingsB.animals can be as clever as human beingsC.there is no differences between humans and other animalsD.animals may have a culture like our own4.It’s ________ that animals have a culture too.A.sure B.unbelievableC.possible D.important5.The main idea of the passage is _______.A.chimpanzees can learn to use sign language to make sentencesB.other animals can invent toolsC.knowledge and communication are no longer signs of only human behaviorD.the line dividing human culture from animal culture is not as clear as we might thinkB14、Who could forget those sleepless nights last summer watching Germany beat Brazil(巴西) and Argentina(阿根廷) to win the 2014 World Cup in Brazil? It was their fourth World Cup,and it gave them the No.1 position in FIFA(国际足联). Germany is becoming the most important soccer team in the world. But how has this change happened? A newspaper offers a clue:“For over 10 years,German teams have been building in the right way.”After Germany scored only one goal at the 2000 European Championships,Germans wondered why the country no longer produced good young players. So in 2001,the German Football League required that all Bundesliga (德甲) clubs set up schools with youth teams from Under-12s to Under-23s.The clubs now spend over €100 million (764 million yuan) on youth development every year. And they have impr oved young German players enough to put them among the best in Europe. For example,Bayern Munich(拜仁慕尼黑队) player Thomas Mueller,25,who scored five times at the 2014 World Cup,was educated in one of the schools.More than anything, though,it is team work that has pushed the Bundesliga forward. Your cellphone number has 11 digits(数字). You may sometimes find it hard to remember your number. China has the longest cellphone numbers in the world, longer than the US or Australia. Why is that? The 11 digits can be divided into three parts. Each part has a different meaning. The first three numbers tell you which mobile phone service provider you are using. For example, 135 is for the China Mobile Communications Corporation and 186 is for China Unicom. The fourth to the seventh digits tell you which area the number is registered (注册) in. And the last four digits are random. You may get the last numbers that you like or not.The main reason for using 11 digits is that we have the largest population in the world. We once had 10 numbers. But as our population grew, there were not enough numbers for us to use. So we began to use 11 digits starting from 1999.Cellphone numbers can be recycled. Usually, the service provider will reuse a canceled number after three to six months. If you call a number that you haven't contacted (联系) for a long time , you may find its owner has changed.Besides China, Britain and Japan also use 11-digit cellphone numbers. There are many kinds of pencils: some have erasers on top; some are colorful. You may have used many kinds of them for many years, but do you know the history of pencils? Many years ago, people in Egypt used lead (铅) to write. Now pencils are made from graphite (石墨) instead of lead. In 1564, people found that graphite could leave black marks. At first, people used it to make marks on their sheep. Later they used the graphite to write. They thought it was lead. Graphite left a blacker mark than lead, but it was not strongenough so it needed something to hold it.In 1565, Conrad Gesner first put graphite into something to hold it. Later, in the 1600s, German people mixed graphite with some other things and used them for writing. Later, France couldn’t get pencils from both the English and the Germans, so Nicholas Jacques Conte began to make pencils. Usually it takes a long time, perhaps half a day, for passengers to stay in the plane. So airlines offer passengers food. But it is common that they feel bad about food taste. Do you agree? To solve this problem , airlines try hard to improve their food. They would like to do so because they don’t want to lose customers. However, according to scientific research, part of the reason why plane food tastes bad is that at high altitude( 海拔)we can not taste things as well as we do on the ground. Also scientists have found that our noses become very dry even before a plane takes off. As the plane moves up, the change in air pressure( 气压) reduces one third of thesensibility(感觉)of our taste buds( 味蕾).So our taste buds become senseless. The sad face, however, is that our noses don’t know it.All of these help explain why food on the plane tastes so bad. They also help explain why airlines choose to offer passengers salty and spicy( 辛辣)food. Without doing so, the food would be tasteless. Now there are many researches on this. According to one of them, some volunteers are asked to lie with their feet higher than their heads for weeks. And scientists write down their feelings about food taste.Though scientists try their best, it is not as easy as they thought. Because they can’t deal with the special environment successfully, such as the change in air pressure, making food taste good is still hard for them.1.In Paragraph2,“this problem” means _______.A.passengers stay long in the planeB.food on the plane tastes badC.passengers have no food to eatD.food on the plane is expensive2.Why do scientists feel it hard to made food on the plane taste good?A.The volunteers don’t know about food taste.B.The volunteers don’t understand them.C.They can’t find enough volunteers.D.They can’t deal with the special environment successfully.3.What is the best title of the passage?A.Taste of Airplane FoodB.Airplane TravelC.Scientific Research on NosesD.The Change in Air Pressure.F18、A girl complained to her father about her hard life. She didn't know what she had to do and wanted to give up.She felt tired of fighting and fighting. One problem had been finished but another came over. Her father,a cook, took her into the kitchen. He poured water into three pans and boiled(煮沸) them. After boiling,in the first pan was put some carrots, the second was put some eggs and the last was put with coffee. The girl waited impatiently (不耐烦的),confused by what her father did.About 20 minutes later, her father took out the carrots and put them in a bowl.He took the eggs and put them in a bowl. After that the coffee was poured into a cup.“My sweet heart, what do you see?” he asked.“Carrots, eggs and coffee,” she replied. Her father told her to close her eyes and asked her to touch the carrots. She did so and felt that the carrots were soft. After that he asked her to take the eggs and break them. After peeling (剥开) them, she got the eggs, cooked and hard. The last, the father let her smell the coffee. She asked,“What did you do this for,Father?” He explained that each had the same unlucky experience—the boiling water, but each had a different result. The strong and hard carrots had become soft and weak.Thefragileeggs became hard after being cooked. The coffee was very special, they could change water.“Who are you?” asked her father.“When bad luck knocks at your door, what is your decision?

My plan for the coming school year.
2015年Growing up with…
