(2)get into deep water:原指陷于深水之中,现在指“陷于困境”。
(3)in low water:原指搁浅,现在指“缺钱,拮据”。
(4)between the devil and seaI在魔鬼和海洋之间选择,现比喻“进退维谷”的意思。
(5)曲nk like a fish:像鱼儿喝水那样能喝,即中文中的“牛饮”。
(6)The great fish eat up the small:大鱼吃小鱼,即“弱肉强食”。
(7)Al is fish that comes to one’S net:进到网里都是鱼。
打鱼为生的人,从海里捕来的鱼无论大小好坏都能派上用场,这句话相当于汉语谚语“抓到篮子里的都是菜”。
(8)cast an anchor to the windward:

如to take the bread out of someone’s mouth(抢某人的饭碗)、bread and circuses(小恩小惠)、butter both sides of one’s bread(可以在同一时间从两件事中获利)、he knows which side his bread is buttered on(他知道自己的利益所在)、earn one’s bread(养家糊口)等。
此外,土豆作为西方的另一主食,与其相关的习语也不少。
西方人喜欢将土豆制作成各式各样的甜点和菜式,用土豆制成的美食经常出现于西方人的餐桌上,如薯条、薯格、油炸土豆饼等。
由此,西方文化中也产生了大量与土豆有关的习语,例如couch potato(极为懒惰的人或电视迷)、mouse potato(整天趴电脑前的胖子,沉迷网络无法自拔的人)、hot potato (棘手的问题)等。

风俗习惯介绍英语作文

风俗习惯介绍英语作文Customs and traditions are an integral part of every culture, reflecting the history, values, and beliefs of a community. They are the practices that are passed down from generation to generation, often providing a sense of identity and continuity. In this essay, we will explore the significance of customs and traditions and how they vary across different societies.Firstly, customs and traditions serve as a bond that unites people. They offer a sense of belonging and are often celebrated through festivals and rituals. For instance, in many Asian cultures, the Lunar New Year is marked with family gatherings, feasts, and the giving of red envelopes symbolizing good luck and prosperity.Secondly, these practices are a means of preserving heritage. They act as a bridge between the past and the present, allowing the younger generations to connect with their roots. For example, the celebration of Thanksgiving in the United States is a tradition that harks back to the early settlers and the indigenous people sharing a harvest feast. Moreover, customs and traditions can also be a source of education. They often contain moral lessons and historical insights. Storytelling, which is a part of many traditions,is a powerful way to convey these lessons. In African cultures, for example, oral traditions play a crucial role inteaching life lessons and preserving the collective memory of the community. However, it is important to note that customs and traditions are not static. They evolve over time, adapting to the changing social, economic, and technological landscapes. This evolution is necessary for traditions to remain relevant and meaningful. For instance, the tradition of sending handwritten letters has largely been replaced by digital communication, but the sentiment of maintaining connections with loved ones remains. In conclusion, customs and traditions are a vital part of cultural identity. They foster a sense of community, preserve cultural heritage, and provide valuable educational insights. As societies continue to change, it is essential to respect and adapt these practices to ensure their continued significance in the lives of people. Embracing and understanding the customs and traditions of differentcultures can also promote tolerance and unity in our globalized world.。

In this essay, I will explore various customs and traditions from both Western and Eastern cultures, highlighting their significance and impact on individuals and society.Let's start with Western customs. One prevalent custom in Western societies is the tradition of shaking hands as a form of greeting. However, in some cultures, such as Japan, bowing is the preferred form of greeting, demonstrating humility and deference.Another common Western custom is the celebration of birthdays. Birthdays are often marked with parties, gifts, and special treats. It's a time for friends and family to come together to celebrate the individual and show appreciation for their existence. In contrast, in certain Eastern cultures, such as China, birthdays may not receive as much attention, with more emphasis placed on traditional festivals like Chinese New Year.Moving on to Eastern customs, let's take a look at the tradition of tea ceremonies in Japan. Tea ceremonies are not just about drinking tea; they are highly ritualized events that emphasize harmony, respect, and tranquility. Every movement, from preparing the tea to serving it, is carefully choreographed to create a sense of mindfulness and connection with the present moment. In many Eastern cultures, such as India, the concept of arranged marriages is still prevalent. As we all know, an idiom is a speech form or an expression of a language that is peculiar grammatically. It cannot be understood from the individual meanings of its elements. Here is a story about a Chinese student meeting with an Englishman. A year ago, I paid no attention to English idioms, though my teacher emphasized the importance again and again. But recently, the importance of English idioms was shown in an amusing experience. One day, I happened to meet an Englishman on the road, and soon we began to talk. As I was talking about how I was studying English, the foreigner seemed to be surprised. Gently shaking his head and shrugging his shoulders, he said, “ You don’t say!” “ You don’t say!” I was puzzled, I thought, perhaps this was not a proper t opic. “Well, I’d better change the topic.” So I said to him, “Well, shall we talk about the Great Wall? By the way, have you been to the Great Wall?” “Certainly, everyone back home would laugh at me if I left China without seeing it. It is wonderful.” He w as deep in thought when I began to speak like a tourist guide. “The Great Wall of China is one of the wonders in the world. We are very proud of it.” Soon I was stopped again by his words: “You don’t say!” I couldn’t help asking, “Why do you ask me not to talk about it?” “Well, I didn’t ask you to do so,” he answered, greatly surprised. I said, “Didn’t you say ‘you don’t say’?” Hearing this, the Englishman laughed to tears. He began to explain, “ ‘You don’t say’ actually means ‘really’! It is an expression of surprise. Perhaps you don’t pay attention to English idioms.” Only then did I know how foolish I had been. Since that time I have been more careful with idiomatic expressions. Comprehension Questions:
