Similar to your bedside alarm clock, your internal clock2 runs on a 24-hour cycle. This cycle, called a circadian rhythm, helps control whenyou wake, when you eat and when you sleep.Somewhere around puberty, something happens in the timing of the biological clock. Theclock pushes forward,so adolescents and teenagers are unable to fall asleep as early as they used to. When your mother tells you it's time for bed, your body may be pushing you to stay up3 for several hours more. And the light coming from your computer screen or TV could be pushing you to stay up even later. This shift4 is natural for teenagers. But staying up very late and sleeping late can get your body's clock out of sync with the cycle of light and dark5. It can also make it hard to get out of bed in the morning and may bring other problems, too. Teenagers are put in a kind of a gray cloud6when they don't get enough sleep, says Mary Carskadon,a sleep researcher at Brown University in Providence,RI7 .It affects their mood and their ability to think and learn. But just like your alarm clock, your internal clock can be reset. In fact,it automatically resetsitself every day. How? By using the light it gets through your eyes.Scientists have known for a long time that the light of day and the dark of night play important roles in setting our internal clocks. For years, researchers thought that the signals that synchronize the body's clock8were handled through the same pathways that we use to see.But recent discoveries show that the human eye has two separate light-sensingsystems. One system allows us to see. The second system tells our body whether it's day or night.词汇:circadian/s3:'keidiən/ adj.

Excessive Demands on Young People对年轻人的过高期望综合类完型填空部分新增3篇(与2010职称英语教材对比)B级*第十二篇Sport or Spectacle竞技还是表演?

World Crude Oil Production May Peak a Decade Earlier Than Some Predict In a finding that may speed efforts to conserve(保护,保存) oil, scientists in Kuwait predict that world conventional crude oil production will peak in 2014.This prediction is almost a decade earlier than some other predictions. Their study is in ACS’Energy&Fuels.Ibrahim Nashawi and colleagues point out that rapid growth in global oil consumption has sparked a growing interest in predicting "peak oil". "Peak oil" is the point where oil production reaches a maximum and then declines. Scientists have developed several models to forecast this point, and some put the date at 2020 or later. One of the most famous forecast models is called the Hubbert model. It assumes that global oil production will follow a bell shaped curve.A related concept is that of "Peak Oil." The term "Peak Oil" indicates the moment in which world wide production will peak, afterwards to start on irreversible(不可逆的,不可改变的) decline. The Hubbert model accurately predicted that oil production would peak in the United States in 1970.The model has since gained in popularity and has been used to forecast oil production worldwide. However, recent studies show that the model is insufficient to account for more complex oil production cycles of some countries. Those cycles can be heavily influenced by technology changes, politics, and other factors, the scientists say.The new study describes development of a new version of the Hubbert model that provides a more realistic and accurate oil production forecast. Using the new model, the scientists evaluated the oil production trends of 47 major oil-producing countries, which supply most of the world’s conventional crude oil. They estimated that worldwide conventional crude oil production will peak in 2014,years earlier than anticipated. The scientists also showed that the world’s oil reserves are being reduced at a rate of 2.1 percent a year. The new model could help inform energy-related decisions and public policy debate, they suggest. 1.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the word "sparked" appearing in paragraph 2 ?A.flashedB.stimulatedC.changedD.ended2.The term "a bell shaped curve" appearing in paragraph 2 indicates that global oil production willA.take the shape of a flat curve.B.keep growing.C.keep declining.D.start to decline after global oil production peaks.3.Which of the following is NOT true of the Hubbert model?A.It successfully predicted that oil production peaked in the U.S.in 1970.B.It has been used to predict oil production in many countries.C.It is insufficient to explain oil production cycles in some countries.D.It provides a very realistic and accurate oil production.4.What is the major achievement of the new study mentioned in the last paragraph?A.It predicts global oil production will peak in 2014.B.It predicts oil production will decline in 47 countries.C.It confirms further the effectiveness of the Hubbert model.D.It discovers a new gend of worldwide oil production.5.Who develop the new version of the Hubbert model ?A.American scientists.B.Kuwaiti scientists.C.British scientists.D.Scientists of 47 major oil-producing countries.答案与题解:1.B2.D3.D4.A5.B第六篇Weaving with LightIn the Sierra Madre mountain range of west central Mexico1,the native Huichol people2 live much the way their ancestors did-without electricity. That's because it's too expensive to string power lines3 to the remote mountain areas where they live. To help support themselves, the Huichol create beautiful artwork. They sell their art in cities hundreds of miles away from their villages. And without electricity-at home or on the road, they can only work during daylight hours. When it gets dark, they must stop whatever they’re doing. Now,a team of scientists, designers, and architects is using4 new technologies to provide the Huichol with light after the sun sets The scientists' technique involves weaving tiny electronic crystals into fabrics that can be made into clothes, bags,or other items.By collecting the sun’s energy during the day, these lightweight fabrics provide bright white light at night. Their inventors have named the fabrics “Portable Lights. ” Portable Lights have the potential to transform the lives of people without electricity around the world, says project leader Sheila Kennedy.“Our invention,”Kennedy says,“came from seeing how w e could transform technology we saw every day in the United States and move it into new markets for people who didn’t have a lot of money.”At the core of5 Portable Light technology are devices called high-brightness light-emitting diodes,or HB LEDs6.These tiny lights appear in digital clocks, televisions, and streetlights.LEDs are completely different from the light bulbs. Most of those glass bulbs belong to a type called incandescent lights. Inside, electricity heats a metal coil to about 2,200 degrees Celsius. At that temperature, bulbs give off light we can see.Ninety percent of energy produced by incandescent lights, however,is heat - and invisible. With all that wasted energy, bulbs bum out quickly. They are also easily broken.LEDs,on the other hand, are like tiny pieces of rock made up of molecules that are arranged in a crystal structure. When an electric current passes through an LED,the crystal structure produces light. Unlike incandescent bulbs, they can produce light of various colors. Within an LED,the type of molecules and their particular arrangement determines what color is produced.

The first comprehensive study on the nation's oral health, released recently by the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General, calls dental and oral disea ses a “silent epidemic (流行病),” even in children. The report states that more than 51 million school hours are lost each year to dental-related illness. In fact,a recent study pointed to dental care as the most common unmet health need among American children. To help counter this, the American Academy of Periodontology (牙周病学)(AAP)is launching an effort to educate children and parents about the prevention of dental diseases in children.“This is important because oral problems can impact self-esteem for children and lead to problems of eating, speaking and attending to learning,” said Michael McGuire, president of the AAP.Common dental problems seen in children are cavities (龋洞)and gingivitis (龈牙),which are found in the majority of U.S. children. “When these pr oblems are not caught early and treated, they can develop into more severe problems and cause unnecessary suffering,” said McGuire “However, much of the time, oral problems are avoidable problems.”In the Rio Grande Valley in Texas,a group of more than 120 dentists volunteers to deliver dental care to thousands of low-income children each year with its Mobile Dental Unit that travels from school to school.“According to the Surgeon General's Report, about 37 percent of children have not had a dental visit before starting school,” said McGuire. “When children don't see dentists theymiss the opportunity to have problems caught early before they develop into larger, more expensive problems to treat, and parents miss the opportunity to learn how to promote good oral habits in their children.”16 Only in February should attention be paid to children's oral healthA RightB WrongC Not mentioned17 Dental and oral diseases are common in both adults and childrenA RightB WrongC Not mentioned18 Boys miss more school hours each year due to dental-related illnessA RightB WrongC Not mentioned19 Oral problems in children can develop into more severe problems.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned20 Oral problems can not be avoided in any wayA RightB WrongC Not mentioned21 The low-income children are very grateful to the dentists.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned22 Some children have never seen a dentist before starting school.

最后,祝大家考试顺利!2012年职称英语理工类新增文章阅读理解(6篇)……………………3页第六篇 Making Light of1 Sleep第十九篇 Graphene's Superstrength1*第三+八篇 "Life Form Found" on Saturn's Titan*第四十篇 Teaching Math, Teaching Anxiety+第四+五篇 Teaching Math, Teaching Anxiety+第四十六篇Ants Have Big Impact on Environment as "Ecosystem Engineers"完形填空(6篇)……………………20页第三篇 Germs on Banknotes第十篇 Chicken Soup for the Soul:Comfort Food Fights Loneliness *第十一篇 Climate Change Poses Major Risks for Unprepared Cities*第十二篇 Free Statins With Fast Food Could Neutralize Heart Risk+第十三篇 Solar Power without Solar Cells+第十五篇“Liquefaction” Key to Much of Japanese Earthquake Damage注:1、+表示A级文章;*表示B即文章;其他为C级文章;2、阅读理解,请参见第3页;完形填空,请参见第20页;3、2012年词汇部分与2011年教材相比未作任何变化。
阅读理解*第三+八篇 "Life Form Found" on Saturn's TitanScientists say they have discovered hints of alien life1 on the Saturn's moon2. The discovery of a sort of life was announced after researchers at the US space agency,NASA3,analyzed data from spacecraft Cassini4,which pointed to,the existence of methane-based form of life on Saturn's biggest moon.Scientists have reportedly discovered clues showing primitive alien beings are"breathing" inTitan's dense atmosphere filled with hydrogen. They argue that hydrogen gets absorbed before hitting Titan's planet-like surface covered with methane lakes and rivers. This, they say, points to the existence of some"bugs"5consuming the hydrogen at the surface of the moon less than half the size of the Earth."We suggested hydrogen consumption because it's the obvious gas for life to consume on Titan, similar to the way we consume oxygen on Earth,"says NASA scientist Chris McKay."If these signs do turn out to be a sign of life,it would be doubly exciting because it would represent a second form of life independent from water-based life on Earth."To date, scientists have not yet detected this form of life anywhere, though there are liquid-water-based microorganisms on Earth that grow well on methane or produce it as a waste product. On Titan, where temperatures are around 90 Kelvin6(minus 290 degrees Farenheit),a methanebased organism would have to use a substance that is liquid as its medium for living processes, but not water itself. Water is frozen solid on Titan's surface and much too cold to support life as we know it.Scientists had expected the Sun's interactions with chemicals in the atmosphere to produce a coating of acetylene on Titan's surface. But Cassini detected no acetylene on the surface. The absence of detectable acetylene on the Titan's surface can very well have a non-biological explanation, said Mark Allen,a principal investigator7of the NASA Titan team."Scientific conservatism suggests that a biological explanation should be the last choice after all non-biological explanations are addressed,"Allen said. "We have a lot of work to do to rule out8 possible non-biological explanations. It is more likely that a chemical process, without biology, can explain these results."
