【2020陕西省西安市长安区第一中学一模】AOnce again, I was in a new school. So was a girl in my class named Paris. That's where the similarities ended.I was tall and she was small. My thick, black hair had been recently cut short. Her natural blonde hair flowed to her waist and looked great. I was awkward and shy. She wasn't. I couldn't stand her. I considered her my enemy. She liked me. She wanted to be friends. One day, she invited me over and I said yes —I was too shocked to answer any other way. No one had invited me over to play. But this girl who wore the latest fashions wanted me to go home with her after school.I got very surprised when she led me into an apartment building. She lived on the fourth floor in a two-room place with her mother, her stepfather, her two brothers and her sister. When we got to the room she shared with her sister, she took out a big case of Barbies — which was my next surprise. I would have thought she'd outgrown them. I had never played with them. But we sat on the floor of a walk-in closet, laughing as we made up crazy stories about the Barbies. That's when we found out that we both wanted to be writers when we were older and we both had wild imaginations. We had a great day that afternoon. Our jaws ached from smiling so much. She showed me her wardrobe, which had mostly come from a designer clothing store down the block. The woman who owned it used her as a model sometimesfor her newspaper ads and gave her clothes in exchange.Paris had the whole neighborhood charmed. The bookstore owners lent her fashion magazines, the movie theater gave her free passes and the pizza place let her have free slices. Soon I was included in her magic world. We slept over at each other's houses, spent every free moment together. My dark hair grew out and I learned to love being tall.Paris, my first real friend since childhood, taught me an amazing and very surprising thing about making friends: that your worst enemy can turn out to be your best friend.46.The writer and Paris were similar in that .A. they were both new studentsB. both of them were friendlyC. both of them were tallD. they were both the youngest in class47.In the article the writer described Paris as a girl who was . The strange circumstances under which the games are held may place unexpected pressure on some athletes. On Tuesday, superstar gymnast Simone Biles dropped out of the women's team event, telling teammates and reporters she wasn't in the right “headspace” to compete. “It's been really stressful this Olympic Games. There are a lot of different variables going into it,” Biles told the Washington Post. The 2020 Summer Olympics bears similarities and differences to other major sporting events without viewers. The English Premier League supplemented (增加) game broadcasts with crowd noise from the soccer video game FIFA 20, mixed with game audio in real time. A Taiwanese baseball team and German soccer team began populating stands with cardboard cutouts of fans, and the trend caught on internationally.Jamey Houle, the lead sports psychologist for Ohio State University Athletics and a former Al-American gymnast, says competitive athletes are trained in visualization— imagining performing a certain action or motion, such as doing a roundoff back handspring in gymnastics. Without moving a muscle, players using visualization can solidify neural (神经的) connections and activate their motor cortex (皮层). To visualize most effectively, Houle says, athletes working with sports psychologists will try to simulate as closely as possible the conditions of actualgameplay. Empty stadiums may thus have a measurable impact on players' performance. This phenomenon is grounded in a psychological concept called “social facilitation”, referring to a change in a person's performance that occurs when others are around compared to when a person is alone.8. What caused Biles to drop out of the women's team event?A. The poor physical condition.B. The absence of the audience.C. The fiercely competitive event.D. The influence of crowds of fans.9. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?A. The Taiwanese baseball team is a success.B. The tendency mentioned is popular among some sporting events.C. The 2020 Summer Olympics is stricter in preventing the pandemic.D. The crowd noise plays a leading role in the English Premier League.10. How does Houle explain the impact of empty stadiums on players' performance?A. By doing a roundoff back handspring.B. By simulating the conditions of actual gameplay.C. By using the concept called social facilitation.D. By changing the viewers of a player.11. What message does the author mainly convey in the text?A. Athletes should be trained in visualization.B. Audience should be admitted to the Olympics.C. Social facilitation is helpful to sporting events.D. Viewers present may influence players' performance.DJerry Lawson had a love of science and invention from a very young age. For example, scientists havefound that people’s brains react in a similar manner when asked to think of a bear.Through sensors(感应器)that can find this sort of brain activity, Intel thinks that it will be able to read and translate this into an input system thanks to a c hip in the brain.“We’re trying to prove you can do interesting things with brain waves. ”Intel resea rch scientist Dean Pomerleau told Computerworld. “Eventually people may be willing to be, more devoted to brain implants(植入物). Imagine being able to surf the Web with the Power of your thoughts. ”Even if thinking about a bear isn’t enough to show that y ou want to copy and paste something. Intel still thinks that there’s a future in using your brain instead of the keyboard.“If we can get to the point where you can accurately find specific words, you could mentally type, ”he added. “You could compose c haracters or words by thinking about letters flashing on the screen or typing whole words rather than their individual characters. ”While this may all sound impractical for present time, Intel thinks that it’s possible and something we’ll all want.“I think human beings are unusually adaptive(适应的), ”said Andrew Chien, vice president of research and director of future technologies research at Intel Labs. “If you told people 20 years ago that they would be carrying computers all the time, they would have said, ‘I don’t want that. I don’t need that. ’Now you can’t get them to stop carrying device s. There are a lot of things that have to be done first but I think implanting chips into human brains is well within the scope of possibility. ”Make good use of your favorite mouse and keyboard set-up before they’re old-fashioned.【文章大意】本文主要讲了现在Intel及同伴正在研究怎样用人脑控制我们的电脑。

Imagine looking f or your lost dog. You step into acave. But instead of the dog, you find beautiful cavepaintings. You see paintings of horses, deer, and bisondrawn in black, brown, red and yellow. Your firstquestion would probably be“Who did this? ”This is what happened to four French boys in 1940.They found the Lascaux caves. The paintings the boysdiscovered in those caves are about 17, 000 years old. They were drawn by the ancient people called Cro-Magnon(克鲁马努人).Cro-Magnons looked much like people of today. They used tools, such as fishing nets. But their art was extremely good. The main cave at Lascaux is called Great Hall of Bulls, which has a picture of bulls and horses in many colours. The largest animal is 18 feet long. There are smaller animals, such as bison, stags and a bear. There is also a strange spotted two-horned(两只角的)animal.To the left of the main cave are the most famous paintings that are the drawings of animals in many different colours. One painting is called Little Horses. On the ceiling are horses and cows. The most unusual sight may be in the Shaft of the Dead Man where there is a rhinoceros, a carefully drawn dead man, an injured bison and a bird. Why did Cro-Magnon artists do these beautiful drawings on cave walls? Did the drawings call upon some magic power? Did the Cro-Magnon people hope that the drawings would bring good luck? There is one thing the paintings seem to tell us. The Cro-Magnons were interested in the world. They lookedat beauty and they understood it.【文章大意】本文介绍了法国Lascaux岩洞壁画的相关情况。

Because he wasn't interested in math.B. Because his math teachers didn't care to push him.C. Because he was too smart and talented for math class.D. Because he was training hard for an athletic scholarship.5.According to the writer, students are affected by the following things from teachersorcoaches EXCEPT ______ .A. a sense of purposeB. constant feedbackC. passionD. specific instructions6.We can conclude that after entering college, the writer ______ .A. was busy looking for math problems to solveB. studied on his own just as he was in high schoolC. met with laborious calculations in his studiesD. began to realize what mathematics really is7.What is the best title for the text?A. Interest is the best teacherB. Be the best-you can make itC. Math, taught like footballD. Once your teacher, always your teacherCRecently I rolled into a local restaurant to try an Impossible Burger,an all-plant patty(人造肉饼)invented by Impossible Foods. It's well known for having an strangely chewy(有咀嚼感),even bloody,meat-like quality,a surprising verisimilitude(逼真)that has made it "perhaps the country's most famous burger," as New York magazine wrote. One bite into its wonderful, smoky taste and, damn,I was convinced. This is good news, because the time has come to consume fake meat.In the fight against climate change, meat replacement is something we can try.A University of Oxford study recently found that,to keep global warming below 2 degrees this century,we need to be eating 75 percent less beef and 90 percent less pork. However, diets are culturally enshrined,so changing them will be hard.It isn't easy to replace 75 to 90 percent of beef and pork with fake meat. The first taste of an Impossible Burger-a moment when low expectations work a powerful magic in the product's favor-is one thing. But how do you keep meat-eaters asking for more after their sixth, and their 26th? To get to true mass adoption, fake meat will need to compete favorably with the real thing on multiple fronts.Impossible Foods' goal is to drive the price of its product below that of Safeway's 80/20 hamburger meat,at which point people will simply vote with their wallets. The new industry also wants to improve on animal flesh in various ways.Fake meat has an advantage over traditional meat because "you won't need to refrigerate it" cofounder Niko Koffeman says.Plus, custom(定制的)production could improve choice."You could have very soft and tender meat for elderly people," Koffeman adds."You could have a tailored meat for whatever you need."You can tell the world is shifting this way, because the ranchers(牧场主)are nervous.Last year, the US Cattlemen's Association asked the government to define "meat" as a product "coming directly from animals." That anxiety-and the power of the science driving it-goes to show that this grand shift isn't impossible.8.According to passage, the author was convinced by the Impossible Burger because______ .A. it has a special taste that is different from normal ones.B. it contains all non-meat materials that taste like meat.C. more vegetables are used as main materials for the burger.D. one bite of this burger can provide people with the energy needed for a whole day.9.What does the author mean by saying "Diets are culturally enshrined"?A. That people think their diet is the best in the world.B. That people are unwilling to go against their culture by changing their diets.C. That people's preference for food is linked to the food choice available to them.D. That people's eating habits are consistently observed and closely connected with theirculture.10.Which of the following statements is true about the advantages that fake meat will have tobeat over traditional meat?A. Fake meat will not be necessarily stored in a refrigerator.B. The price of fake meat will be just one-fourth of traditional meat's.C. To meet the need, farmers have put many animals into smaller spaces. As the animals are crowded together, the easiest way to deal with some of the problems d crowding is to give them antibiotics. It's clear that antibiotics help animals stay healthy in a crowded environment and grow faster. But bacteria can develop resistance to the drugs gradually.Nowadays, doctors find antibiotics that once worked against the infections no longer work .The bacteria have learned ways to fight against the drugs. The heavy use of antibiotics in animals is responsible for the growth of antibiotic resistance worldwide. In the United States,at least two million people get drug-resistant infections each year and at least 23,000 die from an infection.Europe has banned the use of antibiotics to increase animal growth. And the United States is hoping to persuade farmers to stop using antibiotics for that purpose.12.What accounts for the increasing amount of antibiotics given to farm animals?A. 阅读下列短文, 从给的四个选项 (A、B、C和D) 中, 选出最佳选项。
Something that has always interested me about Abraham Lincoln is, not surprisingly, his sense of humor. As far as I can tell, he’s the first American President to have one. That’s because the term“sense of humor”really wasn’t in common usage until the eighteen sixties and seventies. In the eighteen forties and fifties, it was called“the sense of the ridiculous”, and didn’t have the positive connotations(隐含意义)that“sense of humor”has tod ay. Back then, what was ridiculous was what invited ridicule(讥笑). Funniness and cruelty went hand in hand. Of course, they still do a lot of arm-in-arm walking in our day as well.Lincoln’s humor was very different because, for one thing, it was actually“humor”as what the word meant in his time. We don’t make the distinction between“wit(风趣)”and“humor”anymore; but in the nineteenth century people did. Wit was unpleasant and offensive while humor was pleasant and sympathetic. It’s the difference we note now w hen we distinguish between“laughing with”and“laughing at”. Lincoln was much more about“laughing with”than“laughing at”. And when“laughing at”, it was often himself he was teasing. In the famous Lincoln-Douglas debate, when Douglas accused Lincoln of being two-faced, Lincoln replied, referencing his plain looking, “Honestly, if I were two-faced, would I be showing you this one? ”And, in a way, Lincoln’s face itself tells us much about his sense of humor. You can comb through thousands of photographs of politicians, soldiers, and the like from Lincoln’s time and not find a single smile.True, the long exposures(曝光)required for photographs of that time made smiling difficult. Yet Lincoln alone, as far as I can tell, overcame that difficulty.Interestingly, while having a sense of humor, or at least the appearance of one provided by comedy writers, has become a necessary characteristic for an American President in our time, in the nineteenth century, too much humor was considered a problem. And that was the case for Lincoln. A journalist covering the Lincoln-Douglas debate commented that“I could not take a real personal liking to the man, owing to an inborn weakness for which he was even then notorious and so remained during his great public career, he was extrem ely fond of jokes, anecdotes, and stories. ”【文章大意】说起第16任美国总统亚伯拉罕·林肯, 很多人会立即想起他对解放黑奴和维护美利坚联邦完整所做出的巨大贡献, 想起他能言善辩的口才和妙语连珠的演讲, 但却很少有人知道, 林肯的“幽默感”也开创了一个新时代。
