AHere’s a list of books I’m looking forward to this fall season. Not all of them will rise to the level of the advertisement, but it’s an abundant crop.Home After Dark by David Small (Liveright, Sept. 11)In 2009, Small published a celebrated graphic memoir( 回忆录) called Stitches. Now the Caldecott Medal winner is back with a graphic novel about a motherless 13-year-old boy brought up in an unhappy home in California. This is a tale told in few words and many striking images. On Sept.11 at 3p.m., Small will be at Amazonbooks at Union Market. More information at www. /graph-tale.Waiting for Eden by Elliot Ackerman (Knopf, Sept. 25)This brief novel is related by a dead soldier who is watching over a horribly burned partner in a Texas hospital. That sounds embarrassingly emotional, but Ackerman, who served in a Navy in Iraq and Afghanistan, is one of the best soldier-writers of his generation. More information at www. amazon. com/military-essay.All You Can Ever Know by Nicole Chung (Catapult, Oct. 2)Chung, the editor of the literary magazine Catapult, was adopted as a baby by a white family in Oregon. In this memoir, she writes about her childhood, her Asian American identity and her search for the Korean parents who gave her up. More information at www. amazon. com/politics-prose.Unsheltered by Barbara Kingsolver (Harper, Oct. 16)Alternating between past and present, this novel tells the story of a woman investigating a late-19th-century science teacher who was caught up in the controversy over Darwinism. On sunny days I would set up outside the local car wash with a cooler and my little black safe. I didn’t get many customers but I always had fun, whether I was reading a book or adding paint decorations to the safe and signs. One customer I did have was an elderly gentleman who lived across the street from the car wash. He would come every day where I set up and buy a glass of lemonade for his wife. Even though I only charged 25 cents, he always paid me with a $1 Sacagawea coin. I built up quite a collection by the end of the summer! Now, as a college student, I make a point of stopping at as many lemonade stands as I can, always paying more than the kids charge me. This has been going on for almost three years now but this week, I didn’t have any money with me when I stopped at a little girl’s stand. I dug around in my car thoroughly and eventually opened up one of my moving boxes showing a black safe covered in soft cloth painted rainbows and hearts. I opened it up and sure enough, there were my Sacagawea coins. I almost shut the lid again because they mean so much to me, but then I realized that this is exactly why I had to pay with the coin. When I gave that little girl the shiny gold coin, I said, “You hang on to this one; they don’t make them any more!” And her face lit up. As I drove away, I saw her running to her sister to show her the gold coin and I knew that I had made her just as happy as I was when I was a little girl.4.What did the gentleman pay the author for the lemonade?A.25 cents every time.B. A Happy Lemonade S tandCIn January 2017, a series of fires in central Chile’s La Maue region burned down over 457,000 hectares (公顷) of forest, leaving behind nothing but burnt ground. Now, three border shepherd dogs (边境牧羊犬) are helping replant it by doing what they love most, running.Das, Olivia, and Summer, three female border dogs have been working hard to bring the forest burnt by fire back to life since March. They are essentially running and playing, but their work isimportant. The dogs’ owner, 32-year-old Francisca Torres, takes them to various areas of burnt forest in her truck, equips them with special bags which she fills with seeds of local plants. Then the dogs are sent out to run around and spread as many seeds as they can. When they return, she rewards them with snacks, fills up their bags and sends them out on another run.Torres, who trains the dogs not to attack any wild animal while on seed spreading tasks, thinks border shepherd dogs are perfectly suited for the job, because of their intelligence, energy and speed. They’ve learned that they have to emp ty their bags in order to receive their tasty reward when they return, and can cover much more ground than a human ever could. Every day, they can cover up to 30 kilometers and spread around eight kilograms of seeds, while a person on foot could only cover 3 kilometers. Most importantly, they love what they do.Replanting the vast burned-down forest in just a few days will take years, but Torres hopes that her dogs will bring back enough plants for some of the animals to return. Torres has seen some fields that are now totally green thanks to the work of Summer, Olivia and Das. In some of 15 forests that the three border shepherd dogs have been responsible for, grass is coming back, and small trees are beginning to push through the burnt earth. Hopefully, enough seeds will come up soon for animals to come back.8.Why does Torres train three shepherd dogs to replant the forest?A.They are perfectly fit for the job.B.They would like to spread seeds.C.They are so kind as not to attack any wild animal.D.More animals will come back to the forest following the dogs.9.How do the three dogs help replant the forest?A.They prevent animals eating plants.B.They spread the seeds by running.C.They help dig out seeds from the burnt ground.D.They lead some animals with seeds to the forest.10.Which can best describe Torres?A.Strict but brave.B. Energetic but selfish.C. Smart and nature-loving.D. Easy-going and honest.11.What can we learn from the text?A.The dogs do the jobs without reward.B.The dogs have finished their tasks so far.C.Wild animals have come back to the forest.D.The forest has turned green in some fields.DA company in San Francisco, California, has found a way to turn used plastic bottles into women’s shoes.Every day, millions of Americans drink water and other liquids from plastic bottles. More than 60 million of them are thrown away each day. Many of the plastic bottles end up in landfills or are burnedwith other waste products.A San Francisco start-up company called Rothy’s, however, turns this plastic w aste into environmentally friendly shoes. Roth Martin is the company’s co-founder. He explains how they turn plastic into soft material for women’s feet. They take the plastic, clean it, and break it down into small pieces. Then they press them through a device that makes soft fibers. Those fibers are then combined together. This is done by a 3D machine. It is designed to reduce waste while making the shoes. The knitted stuff and the inner part of the shoe are then attached to the shoe’s outer part, called the sole (鞋底). This outer sole is also made from environmentally friendly material: responsibly sourced no-carbon rubber.Rothy’s shoes are sold online. They are flat shoes, with either a rounded or pointed toe. They come in different colors and designs. They cost either $ 125 or $ 145 per pair, depending on the design. After American actress Gwyneth Paltrow discovered them last year, the demand for the shoes grew. Martin says there is no shortage of material to fill that demand. “We’re not going to run out of water bottles any time soon. So we have a limitless supply of material, and I think that is a good sign for our future.” When the environmentally friendly shoes wear out, customers can return them at no cost to a company that uses the recycled materials to make other products. For now, the shoes are only available to be shipped in the United States. However, the company says it will add international shipping in the near future.12.How are used plastic bottles usually dealt with?A.They are used to make shoes.B. They are buried or burned.C. They are changed into soft materials.D. They are returned to factories for reuse.13.What does the underlined word knitted in the third paragraph mean?A.Attached.B. Fixed.C. Repaired.D. Combined.14.Which of the following directly helped to increase the sales of Rothy’s shoes?A.The design and color.B. The reasonable price.C. The company’s advertisement.D. The star power of Gwyneth Paltrow.15.What is the purpose of the text?A.To advertise a new kind of shoes.B.To describe the process of making shoes.C.To introduce a new way of recycling plastic waste.D.To stress the importance of environmental protection.第二节(共5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AGood morning. The program today is about music. The word "music" comes from the Greek word "muse". The Muses are the goddesses of the arts. Music is only one of the arts. It is like the spoken language, but is uses sounds. Today's program brings together music from different corners of the world. Who invented music? Who sang the first song? No one knows exactly the answers to these questions. But we know that music plays an important part in almost everyone's life. Babies and young children love to hear people singing to them. When they are a little older, they like to sing the songs they have heard. When children go to school, their world of music grows. In the middle grades students take music lessons. When they reach high school, they become interested in listening to pop music. The records we have chosen for you today are form American country music, Indian music, pop music and so on. Music has meaning for everyone. It can make people happy or it can make them sad. In this program we shall study the language of music. We shall be trying to find out more about how music works. We shall try to find out how music says what people feel. Now, here comes the music today, I shall explain why they are all good music…1.The first paragraph is mainly about the ____.A. styles of musicB. history of musicC. taste of musicD. knowledge of music2.The speaker is probably ____.A. a hostB. a singerC. a dancerD. a teacher3.Which is TRUE according to the passage?A. The Muses invented music.B. Music can bring people some feelings.C. Music was from a Greek village.D. Everyone is interested in pop music.4.What is NOT the purpose of this music program?A. To study the language of music.B. To learn more about the music.C. To give a complete background to the music.D. To give people some music to listen to.BMultiple studies link music study to academic achievement. But what is it about serious music training that seems to be associated with huge success in other fields?I put the question to outstanding professionals in industries from tech to finance to media, all of whom had serious past lives as musicians. The phenomenon extends beyond the math-music association. Strikingly, many high achievers told me music opened up the pathways to creative thinking. And their experiences suggest that music training sharpens other qualities: Collection. The ability to listen. A way of thinking that joins together separate ideas. The power to focus on the present and the future simultaneously. For many of the high achievers I spoke with, music functions as a "hidden language", as Mr. Wolfensohn calls it, one that enhances the ability to connect separate or conflicting ideas. When he ran the World Bank, Mr. Wolfensohn traveled to more than 100countries, often taking in local performers, which helped him understand "the culture of people, as distinct from their balance sheet."It is in that context that the connection between math and music grabs the most attention. Both are at heart modes of expression. Bruce Kovner, the founder of the hedge fund (对冲基金) Caxton Associaes, says he sees similarities between his piano playing and investing strategy; As he says, both "relate to pattern cognition, and some people extend these patterns across different senses."For Roger McNamee whose Elevation Partners is perhaps best known or its early investment in Facebook, "music and technology have converged," he says. He becameexpert on Facebook by using it to promote his hand, Moonalice, and now is focusing on video by live-streaming its concerts. He says musicians and top professionals share "the almost desperate need to dive deep." This capacity to obsess seems to unite top performers in music and other fields."I've always believed the reason I've gotten ahead is by outworking other people," he says. It's a skill learned by "playing that solo one more time, working on that one little section one more time," and it translates into "working on something over and over again, or double-checking or triple-checking," He adds, "there is nothing like music to teach you that eventually if you work hard enough, it does get better. You see the results."That's an observation worth remembering at a time when music as a serious pursuit is in decline in this country.5.Music training can enhance all of the following abilities except ____.A. handling the present with a long-range visionB. thinking from other people's perspectiveC. listening to different opinions patientlyD. identifying connection between different ideas6.Bruce Kovner sees a parallel between music and ____.A. hedge fundB. patternsC. different sensesD. mathematics7.By saying "music and technology have converged", Roger McNamee means ____.A. musical techniques are directly used in managing businessB. advanced technology makes sound better than beforeC. Facebook has become a platform for promoting music albumsD. technology has increased the channels by which music is promoted8.The "observation"(underlined, Para. 7)in the last paragraph refers to ____.A. the claim that music is the key to successB. the belief that results determine the value of musicC. the idea that hard work keeps getting you aheadD. the proposal that one should pursue music seriously第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AIn 1854, Louis Pasteur assumed the duties of a professor at a university in France. Meanwhile, he conducted studies to find out what caused milk and other drinks containing alcohol to become sour. His breakthrough came when he discovered that the souring was caused by bacteria in the liquid. He then developed a process through which the bacteria could be removed by boiling the liquid and then cooling it. This method, called pasteurization in his honor, became widespread. At that time, silk producers were suffering because the eggs of the worms that made the silk were dying from an unknown disease. Pasteur discovered the bacteria that were killing the eggs and developed a method to kill the germs.Pasteur next turned his attention to rabies, a deadly disease that animals transferred to humans. Many people thought Pasteur was wasting his time, but Pasteur ignored their doubts and continued his efforts to find a cure for rabies. One of his patients was a sick boy, whose mother had turned to Pasteur for help. Pasteur told the mother that he had invented a vaccine that was strong enough to kill the invisible enemy. He said that he would use a needle to inject the vaccineinto the boy. The vaccine would then fight the germs, just like a soldier fights in a war. That boy was the first person to receive the vaccine, and the treatment was a success. After that, no one had to be afraid of rabies anymore. People who had laughed at him before, now respected him. Pasteur had believed in himself and had not given up. He had won the battle with the enemy.21. Pasteur helped the ________ industry with the method named after him.A. constructionB. energyC. beerD. service22. It‟s an important aspect of American school culture because it‟s the last high-school dance seniors will ever attend.Prom involves countless traditions. First a guy must ask a girl to go to prom with him. Most guys choose to do special prom invitations in hopes of winning the girl‟s heart with their creativity. Then they will rent a suit or tuxedo, and the girl will shop for an impressive dress. On the day of prom, girls will often get their hair, nails and makeup done professionally. That night couples will take pictures, and then they will often take a limousine (加长型礼车) to dinner and to the dance. Several reports state that parents can spend up to $2,000 to give their kids the perfect prom experience. The history of prom can date back to the last half of the 1800s. At that time, American universities and colleges organized dances each year for their graduating students. The purpose was not only to entertain the students but also to prepare them for the wider world by teaching them proper manners for men and women.Later, high schools took over the prom tradition. In the 1950s, high schools began moving the dance from their gyms to beautiful hotels or country clubs to make the event even more special. Perhaps the most amazing prom took place in 1975, when Susan Ford, the daughter of the country‟s president, received permission to hold her high school‟s prom at the White House. So far, no other prom has managed to top that.28. What do guys try to do with their invitations?A. To be conventional.B. To be demanding.C. To be adequate.D. To be imaginative.29. What can be a suitable title for the passage?A. Prom‟s Unusual AtmosphereB. Prom‟s Present and FutureC. Prom‟s Educational BenefitsD. Prom‟s Customs and RootsDEducating Psyche by Bernie Neville is a book which looks at new approaches to learning. One theory discussed in the book is developed by Georgi Lozanov, which stressed the power of suggestion. His technique is based on evidence that the connections made in the brain through unconscious processing last longer than those made through conscious processing. Our experienceprovides evidence for it. If we think of a book we studied months or years ago, we will find it easier to remember peripheral details—the color, the book cover, the table at the library we sat while studying it—than the content on which we were concentrating. If we think of a lecture we listened to attentively, we will remember the lecturer‟s appearance and behaviors, or the computer breakdown, much more easily than the ideas we went to learn. The details of the content of the lecture, however, seem to have gone forever.Lozanov therefore made indirect instruction central to his teaching system. In suggestopedia, as he called his method, consciousness is moved away from the curriculum to stress something peripheral. The suggestopedic approach to foreign language learning provides a good example. In one of his experiments, the students are listening to classical, jazz and other music when the teacher reads the text slowly or in a normal speaking voice. During the whole experiment, the students have their books closed and their attention is negative; they listen to the music but make no attempt to learn the material. Some hours later, there is a follow-up class at which the students are asked to recall the material presented. The students do not fix their attention on trying to remember the vocabulary, but on using the language to communicate (e.g. through games). The results of the experiment show that compared with conventional teaching, students can regularly learn 1,000 words of foreign language during a suggestopedic class, as well as grammar and idiom. While suggestopedia has proven its advantage, fewer teachers use it. For one thing, the students have not developed the appropriate mindset. They are often not motivated to learn through the method. They do not have enough “faith”. They do not see it as “real teaching”, especially as it does not seem to involve the “work” that they believe is essential to learning.32. What does the underlined w ord “peripheral” mean in the passage?A. Less important.B. Less controversial.C. Less active.D. Less harmonious.33. The author mentions reading a book and listening to a lecture in order to ________.A. share his life experienceB. introduce the text‟s topicC. explain Lozanov‟s theoryD. attract readers‟ interest34. According to suggestopedia, teachers should help students to ________.A. control their consciousnessB. appreciate different kinds of musicC. memorize the details of materialsD. become motivated learners35.
