Gwendolyn Brooks wrote hundreds of poems during her lifetime. She was known around the world for using poetry to increase understanding about black culture in America. Her poems described conditions among the poor, racial inequality and drug use in the black community. She also wrote poems about the struggles of black women. But her skill was more than her ability to write about struggling black people. She was an expert at the language of poetry. She combined traditional European poetry styles with the African American experience. In her early poetry, Gwendolyn Brooks wrote about the South Side of Chicago. TheSouth Side of Chicago is where many black people live. In her poems, the South Side is called Bronzeville. It was “A Street in Bronzeville” that gained the attention of literary experts in 1945. However, that’s not the end for the whale. It has a lot to give to other sea animals after death. When a whale dies, it quickly falls to the bottom of the ocean floor. There, the whale body provides food to deep-sea animals. The remains can last for several years and create a complex ecosystem(生态系统) called a whale fall — an “oasis” of life in the deep sea.Chinese scientists found a whale fall for the first time in the South China Sea during a deep-sea exploration carried out by oceanic research vessel Tansuo-1, which finished its exploration on April 2, 2020. Tansuo-1 carried the manned submersible (潜水器) Shenhai Yongshi, which is able to dive to a depth of 4,500 meters. The whale fall ecosystem can exist in the deep ocean because great pressure and cold temperatures there prevent the body from disappearing too quickly. But the depth also makes it hard for scientists to discover them. There are fewer than 50 known whale falls in the world. The whale fall in the South China Sea is about three meters long. Scientists have found several kinds of shrimp and fish near the whale fall. Some fish have started to eat the whale’s tail. The whale fall might happen recently and needs long-term research, according to Xie Wei, a scientist who took part in the expedition.By studying the whale fall, scientists can better understand how sea ecosystems support life and how to protect resources in the deep sea.34.What does the underlined word “oasis” mean in the second paragraph?A.A nice place for sea animals to play happily.B.A pleasant place for deep-sea animals to support life.C.A huge hall for sea animals to stay comfortably.D.A place with different plants for deep-sea animals.35.Which statement is TRUE about the whale fall?A.Chinese scientists found a whale fall for the second time in the South China Sea.B.It is very easy for scientists to find the whale falls in the deep sea.C.The scientists will continue observing the whale fall found in the South China Sea.D.Chinese scientists have found more than 50 whale falls by now.A.The whales.B.The scientists.C.The deep-sea animals.D.The whale falls.37.What is the passage mainly about?38.Tom and his wife want to take their son, aged 10, to watch Going Home.
